The Kinloch prize will be a lucky dip drawn at the prize giving ceremony afterwards (the lucky person must be present). The shotgun tee booking is now open and we therefore encourage you to book your favourite starting tee as soon as possible. There is a shotgun start at 7.30am on the day, for those who aren t able to play in the afternoon. Women s Quadrangular against Remuera, RAGGC and Windross Farm. Thursday 24 th May 2018: The narrowest of victories for NSGC at home against the three visiting clubs. Final 18-Hole Matchplay points: 1 st : NSGC 57 points. 2 nd : Remuera 56.5 points. 3 rd : Windross Farm 53 points. 4 th : RAGGC 49.5 points. Well done to the NSGC team of Demi Lee, Esther Jiang, Cathy La Ville, Jennifer Evans, Marie Goldthorpe and Karen Dye. Healthaire and North Shore GC Men s 54-Open Strokeplay Championship: Saturday 19 th and Sunday 20 th May An excellent and full field of 96 players competed for the NSGC 54-Hole Open Strokeplay Cup and the Healthaire Cup (Nett Trophy) over last weekend. Golfers from as far away as Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Waikato and Bay of Plenty as well as top players from the Auckland and Harbour Districts, joined members of NSGC in a weekend celebration of medal golf.

2 The weather gods treated us reasonably kindly, with only heavy bursts of rain to cope with on the Saturday afternoon and overnight. Our green keepers did an amazing job in presenting the course to its absolute best (considering the conditions) and the greens were really superb fast and true. The course was a real test of golfing ability, but this didn t stop some incredible scoring amongst these top players. A number of rounds in the 60 s including a 66 in the 3 rd round from our very own Jason Gulasekharam, was testament to these players ability. However, it was the 15 year old Jang Hyun Lee from Maungakiekie GC and an Auckland Rep player, who continued his stellar recent form shooting 68/70/64 for a 202 total to win by 7 shots from Jason Gulasekharam and James Hydes (Gulf Harbour GCC). In the Nett competition, Ben Jujnovich on a 2.5 index shot a 3 round nett total of 211 to win the Healthaire Cup by one shot, from Jason Gulasekharam in 2 nd and Josh Rookes in 3 rd. Here below are the winners receiving their trophies: Gross Winner: Jang Hyun Lee and NSGC Captain: Graeme Storey Nett Winner: Ben Jujnovich and NSGC General Manager: Rowland Griffiths Women s Golf: Mary McFetridge 4BBB. The draw for the 1 st Rd matchplay of this competition on Tuesday 29 th May 2018 is now available on Dot Golf. Score cards will be pre-printed and available in the Pro Shop. On completion of your match, please bring the completed cards (after scanning and entering the result on the draw in the Women s Locker Room) to Golf Operations. They will then update the draw, enter the details on Dot Golf and publish the matches on the website and in the Women s Locker Room. The 2 nd round is on Thursday 31 st May, Semi-Final on Tuesday 5 th June and Final on Thursday 7 th June. Saturday 9 th June 2018: This event is to be entered on the day, by clicking on the appropriate button on the Dot Golf terminal when getting your score card. There is no fee for entering and the prizes are $ for the winner and $ for the runner up (both club credits). So you ve nothing to lose by entering on the day! Grand Slam Cup 2 nd Rd. Saturday 16 th June Enter on the day. Remember it s Black Tees (Nett medal) for those who want to be part of this competition. Harry Lutz Memorial Trophy 1 round 4BBB Nett. Sunday 17 th June 2018: The entry sheet for this 4BBB event is available in the Men s Locker Room. $ each for the winners (club credits). The runners up receive the Wynyard Trophy and $70.00 each (club credits). So organise your golfing partner and add your names to the sheet today. Juniors: O Donovan Boy s Aggregate Combined Stableford is to commence next Sunday (27 th May). This will be the first round of four. It is a Pairs competition and the winners will receive the prestigious O Donovan Boy s Aggregate Trophy and $20.00 club credits each. 2 nd place receives $15.00 club credits each and 3 rd place receives $10.00 club credits each. So, boys, get a partner and enter yourselves in the tee booking sheet as you normally would, or contact Golf Operations to enter. You must play all four rounds (29 th May, 3 rd, 10 th & 17 th June) with the same partner. From the Management: Richard (our Golf Operations Manager) has been generously granted a leave of absence by the club to return to the UK in August. The purpose of his trip is to undertake an 800 kilometre bike ride, to raise essential funds for the charity Age UK. The ride is in honour and memory of John Poustie a lifelong friend of a good friend of Richard s, who at the age of 63, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer s. After a sad deterioration of memory and physical capabilities linked to this wretched disease, John very sadly, passed away just after Christmas, so the ride will now be in his memory. Richard took up cycling at the start of this year and has decided to embark on this ride from Newcastle, the northernmost Premier rugby club in England, to Exeter the southernmost. His route will cover about 800 kilometres and will take him just under a week, which the group feel is a suitably demanding challenge and worthy as a fundraising exercise.

4 If you would like to support Richard s venture, he has set up a Give a Little fundraising page (the link is below) and I know that he would be absolutely thrilled if members of the club felt able to support him. All funds will go directly to the charity, as he is covering all his own costs. Ocean Shores Country Club: I am very pleased to confirm that we have added another excellent golfing destination to our list of reciprocal golf clubs. For any of our members heading towards the gold coast, you may want to take a small excursion south between Southport and Byron Bay where you can enjoy a fabulous days golf at this impressive facility. 54 Hole Healthaire Cup Feed-back: The green keepers take a lot of stick when the course is not looking it s best and I would like everyone to know that the general feed-back from the many visitors that played in last weekend s 54 Hole event was exceptional. The greens are in phenomenally good condition and despite the appalling weather leading into the weekend, even the fairways received praise. In Tony s own words This is only the start of our journey towards providing our members with the best playing conditions possible. Golf Etiquette Education: E Sadly what I did witness over the weekend was a very poor discipline amongst the many young and very talented golfers towards taking care of the course. An important aspect of all players entering the game is to adopt good habits from day one. I see our young golfers applying this mantra to their swing routines, putting regimes and equally important should be their etiquette towards the gold course. How would you feel about being in contention then landing in a footprint in a bunker or in the middle of a 10mm divot hole in the middle of the fairway. PLEASE LOOK AFTER OUR GOLF COURSE AND REPLACE YOUR DIVOTS, RAKE YOUR BUNKERS AND REPAIR YOUR PITCH MARKS. From the Course: GENERAL COURSE CONDITIONS I wasn t at all in a hurry for winter to turn up, but turn up it has! Temperatures have dropped considerably this week as a slow moving southerly puts a bite in the air, along with a wet forecast for most of June. Even though the weather may have affected the majority of the 54-hole tournament field Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning was a treat. Even though we received 14mm that Saturday afternoon, including overnight, I was not looking forward to what we had to do to get the course into play for Sunday. The following morning, fairways were slightly wet but quite good considering the rain we recorded and we only had to pump out a handful of bunkers to get them back into play. Greens had been stimped at 12 feet on Saturday morning and I would say they were a touch quicker on

5 Sunday morning, which was the perfect result for our tournament. Some great golf from a few of the top players produced some fantastic scores, particularly for the eventual winner. GREENS As mentioned, greens were stimped at 12 feet on Saturday morning which is a great speed. Playing pennants for Gulf Harbour a few years ago, it was a condition that I always expected of the greens here at North Shore Golf Club. Greens were always quick and most of the time very smooth. I regularly take core samples from our greens to check what is happening below and I am constantly measuring root systems of Poa greens that are longer than 125mm. For Poa greens, that is quite an amazing result. All the cultural practices additional to our well-designed fertility program are part and parcel of producing such great results. Knowing that we can produce these types of conditions on our putting surfaces, while maintaining very healthy greens, is a great result. To further amplify this, Will Bowden from Sports Surface and Design Management (SSDM), audits our practices, collects data pertaining to the putting surfaces (smoothness, weed content, surface and root health), soil samples off our greens to monitor nematode activity, provide nutrient levels and recommendations for me to help track progress and further improve our practices. Will uses the most modern of equipment to measure these results. Parry Meter to measure trueness and smoothness Penetrometer to measure firmness

6 Superintendents always strive for the best possible surfaces across the entire golf course and with assistance from a scientific perspective to gain those desired outcomes, will only benefit all golfers as well as the maintenance crews. PROJECTS 2018 As mentioned last week, on some of the holes we have been working on, there have been some excellent changes made to greatly improve the playability of the hole and their surrounds. The 7th hole especially doesn t look that different from the original hole, but the surrounds have been improved to handle all conditions. The many issues we found here, which had affected all the drainage coming off the green and the three bunkers, has been replaced with new drainage pipe and a new portion of sand carpet coming off the green towards the 8th tee. This will make a huge difference to the area s condition. Bunkers have been slightly re-shaped and lowered on the 7th hole and the entire turfed area is now sand capped for better drainage and a drier area to walk off the 7th green and onto the 8th tee. A great job from a team who are producing some quality work.

7 FAIRWAYS With all the good that has happened on the newly sown fairways, again the weather has slowed us down. We were hoping to cut the fairways again this week, but have not been able to without making a mess. We will try again towards the end of the week, or wait til the following week. CART PATHS The weather has slowed the contractors down this week. With the course being fairly wet at the moment, the challenge is to get machinery and concrete out to site. As the week progresses the decision will be made to push on or delay for a few days.
