Shoretalk: Friday 10th November 2017 Members Corner: Silvia Brunotti (NSGC Junior member) wins the New Zealand Amateur Championship: We are delighted to announce that our very own Silvia Brunotti has won the New Zealand Amateur Championship at just 14 years old, by beating defending champion Rose Zheng (7/6) at Russley GC on Sunday 5 th November This victory launches Silvia onto the golfing scene, which has come at the same age as former world number one and superstar Lydia Ko. After being 1-down early in the match, Silvia reclaimed the lead on the fourth hole to never give it up again. By the halfway stage she enjoyed a 3-up lead and as the day progressed the galleries realised that something special was happening. However, there has been no time for too many celebrations after her win, as she has had school exams all this week! Congratulations Silvia on a fantastic achievement we re sure that it will be the first of many in your golfing career. If you see Silvia around the club/course practising, do say hi and well done. Jaewoo continues his rich vein of form: Another one of our brilliant young Junior golfers has continued his recent excellent golfing form by winning the Junior Matchplay Championship 2017, defeating his own sister Yeonsoo Son (also a fantastic golfer) in the final. Jaewoo (a North Harbour U19 representative) is working very hard at his game and all that hard work is definitely paying off. Well done to both him and his sister Yeonsoo. Women s gardening days are starting again as the weather is starting to improve: The next date scheduled is Wednesday 15th November (1.00pm pm. The group are going to tidy up all the gardens around the 14th hole area, so please bring along your smile, clippers and gardening gloves. The more ladies we have - the more we can achieve! Any queries, please contact Marie Dunn on And just see what Marie Dunn (Golf Committee member and Women s gardening organiser) and the greenkeepers have managed to achieve with this area just near the 19 th tee (see pictures below)! New planting (by Marie) and fresh bark (from the greenkeepers) to tidy up the area and make it look very smart. Thank you all.

Men s Wednesday Eclectic: Just a reminder that the last day of this season s Men s Wednesday Eclectic is on Wednesday 15 th November The annual Eclectic Lunch will be held on Friday 24 th November 2017 (details in your programme book) and the Eclectic organisers are now taking names/money for the lunch. Cost is $25.00 per head and the fun begins at 11.00am. The organisers need to know final numbers by no later than Wednesday 22 nd November Driving Range: The driving range will be closed on Wednesday s, Saturday s and Sunday s from 5.30pm until 8.00pm, in order for the range balls to be collected. Please do not hit balls on the range during these times. Thank you in advance for your co-operation. Forthcoming Golf Events: Mixed: FINAL CALL for the first NSGC 2 for 9 Golf: Kindly and proudly sponsored by ILG (Insurance and Lending Group), this is a new format/concept and we will be running the events on Monday 20 th, Monday 27 th November and Monday 11 th December If the event proves popular with members, we will be introducing regular dates throughout the 2018 Summer months. Here are the details of the competition: Tee booking for the first event on Monday 20 th November 2017 (Shotgun start at 4.00pm) is now open. To book please telephone Richard (Golf Operations Manager) or him: richard@nsgc.co.nz and he will be delighted to add you to the field. PS: Be quick tee options are limited!

Christmas Twilight: It may seem ages away, but Christmas is really only just around the corner! We re already planning the festivities here at NSGC and a traditional part of the club s celebrations is the famous NSGC Christmas Twilight. This year to be held on Tuesday 12 th December, with a fantastic Christmas prize table. Very reasonable entry fees of $6.00 for members and $25.00 for visitors so why not invite some of your friends along to join in the fun. The tee booking for the event is now open via Dot Golf. FINAL CALL! Mixed Open Canadian Foursomes 4 th and Final Round. Sunday 19 th November Shotgun start at 12.00pm. Entry sheet is available in the downstairs foyer. Men: Midweek Hamper Day. Wednesday 6 th December Shotgun start at 12.30pm on all three courses. The tee booking sheet for our very popular end of year Midweek Men s golfing celebration is now open. Please go to Dot Golf tee booking to secure your spot. Women: MWW Closing/Christmas Gifting Day and Prize giving. Tuesday 5 th December Shotgun start at 8.30am. The entry sheet for the Midweek Women s end of year event is now available in the Women s Locker Room. From the Management: Closing Day date change: Due to a diary conflict we have had to move our Closing Day out from the 9 th December to the 16 th December. I have received a lot of positive feed-back on this change, as it extends our season which allows for another Twilight event (the newly-publicised Christmas Twilight) and another round of Midweek Scrambles. For those who are negatively affected by this change, please accept our sincere apologies.

New Faces to support the Club. Many of you will have already seen on the lower lobby notice board the final nominations for the Board and Playing committees for The main change on the Board sees Wendy Storey take the decision to stand down after her two very successful years. Wendy will be replaced by Joanne Price, who is a lawyer by profession, plays both female and mixed Pennants and has also been the weekend Womens golf representative for I think there is no doubt she will make an excellent addition to the current Board. The playing committee sees both Greg Frittelli and Ted Szczepanski step down and they will be replaced by Gavin Corbett and Mike Hogan. Although not the forum for a formal statement of appreciation, I would still like to say a personal thank you to Wendy and to both Greg and Ted for committing their personal time to try and improve golf related matters at NSGC. From the Course: General Course Condition: It has been very encouraging to see the course taking shape as the weather improves. Definition is coming along nicely and good grooming techniques from the team are really making areas shine and stand out. We have had irrigation on, on greens and tees only, but only intermittently for the past 3 weeks to keep moisture levels up but have kept irrigation off on fairways as we would only be rewetting very soft areas again and not allowing them to dry out appropriately. The fertiliser we have applied to the fairways has taken very well. Colour is consistent across all these areas with them looking so much healthier than what they were a few weeks ago. Growth has improved, improving ball lie and this will only get better throughout the season. Over the next few weeks, we will be over-sowing the left side edge of the 3 rd fairway along the cart path to thicken the rough in this area and hopefully slow down balls to stop them from rolling into the out of bounds, as many have already experienced. We will be using fine fescue so that we follow the same theme the hole was designed with. However, fescue is a very slow germinating grass, so the result will take a little time to establish. We have stopped mowing this area already just to grow the rough out as much as possible. We have found damage sustained from individuals hitting off the grass tee on the range when this area is closed. When the grass tee is open for use, (mainly special events for members and corporate golf), we are able to control the repair work to get the worn areas top dressed and seeded so that the recovery for the entire allocated area comes back at the same time. The

above pic, taken Thursday morning, shows that there is continual abuse of the tee and makes it difficult for us to assign repair if we are unaware there is damage. Please stay off the grass tee if it is not open for use. We would like the tee to be in its best condition for our members when the tee is opened for you. The yellow chain in the picture indicates that the range is closed for maintenance and ensures the safety of all Pro Shop and course staff when working on the range. Please refrain from entering the range while this chain is up. The chain will also be used when the grass tee is open. There have been instances recently where golfers have been using the grass tee and others have gone back to the shelter to hit balls. This is unacceptable for the safety of those on the grass tee and has the potential for serious harm. The chain will remain up at these times until the grass tee is closed for use. Regards, Tony Jonas Course Superintendent From the Café Twilight Evening Meals: We have been trying a plate based meal at $17.50 for the Twilight evening meals. So far they are proving to be successful. This week as we had a shotgun start and everyone wanted meals at the same time. In future we will return to a buffet meal when it is a shotgun start, however the buffet will be at a cost of $22.00 per person. Our regular menu will not be on offer during Twilight. However, once all twilight specials have been served we will be happy to return to the regular menu. We do endeavour to deliver meals as quickly as possible. Please help us by making sure your number is in a clear spot, so the wait staff can find you easily, this will aid in a speedy delivery process. As a point of interest, we did 68 meals in a 75 minute time slot. So we did manage to get a meal out of the kitchen at just over a minute - not a bad rate by most kitchen standards I would say.

Christmas Hams etc: We will be offering Whole and Half Christmas Hams again this year - also Christmas Tarts and Butter Tarts. Pricing on these items to follow. Peggy and the Team in the Café From the Pro Shop New Women's Greg Norman and Birdee UV50+ Long Sleeve Polos have arrived in store. Only $ in multiple plain and printed colours. Full size runs available. Rules Questions of the week: John, when starting a hole in the recent Strokeplay Club Championships, played from outside the teeing ground. Does John incur a penalty of two strokes and must play the ball as it lies? True or False? Answer: False. Rule 11-4 states that he does indeed incur a penalty of two strokes and must then play a ball from within the teeing ground. If John had made a stroke from the next teeing ground without first correcting his mistake, he would have been disqualified. Golf quote of the week:
