1 Shoretalk: Friday 22 nd September 2017 Members Corner: Twilight Series. 2017/2018: We are delighted to announce that our incredibly popular Twilight Series is due to start again on Tuesday 3rd October The 2017/2018 series (kindly and proudly sponsored by Premium Real Estate) runs from Tuesday 3rd October Tuesday 6th March 2018 (inclusive) and is open to members and nonmembers of NSGC. Tee times are available from 3.30pm every Tuesday, so why not come along with your golfing friends from both inside and outside the club and join in the 9-Hole fun. Great prizes available at the end of the series and club credits every week. Women s 36-Hole Strokeplay Championships. Saturday 16 th and Sunday 17 th September 2017: The hardy women competing in the NSGC 36-Hole Strokeplay managed to complete their two rounds playing in extremely difficult conditions, especially on the Saturday. Despite the course playing extremely long, Vaha Fapiano shot an extremely impressive 156 Gross (77 and 79) to win the Ruth Woods Cup (Silver Division). The winner of the Trish Lavelle Cup (Bronze Division) was Christina Tiang. Well done to all the players who participated. 2 Bronze 1 Division (Trish Lavelle Cup) Gross Winner: Christina Tiang 193 Gross Gross Runner up: Teresa Tan 200 Gross Nett Winner: Guimei Wang 154 Nett Stableford Winner: Fiona Huang 55 Pts SWH Chambers memorial Rosebowl 2017: Saturday 16 th September 2017: Like the Women, the Men had to cope with some terrible weather last Saturday whilst competing in the SWH Chambers Memorial Rosebowl. Unlike the Women, they did have the relative luxury of playing 4BBB Stableford! The winners of the competition were Sean Kim and Kei Baik Lee with 43 pts (pictured below), just pipping the runners up - Soon Wook Lee and Song Tak Lim. Well done gentlemen! Women s Anniversary Plate 2017: The Women s Anniversary Plate final was played on Thursday between Angela Tsang and Moony Cho. Although the course conditions have improved this week, they were still challenging for the girls who both did extremely well considering. The eventual winner was Angela. Well done to both for reaching the final. Congratulations to Angela and commiserations of Moony. From the Management: Toilet on the 7 th We are all sadly aware of the eyesore the toilet by the 6 th Green has become. Despite being made slightly better, by the sterling efforts of Tony & Alex Sharp, who went in there with brushes and shovels this week, it is still pretty grim. Anyway, we are actively engaged in getting this sorted out and once we get a little bit of decent weather, we can get onto this. Men s Locker room ceiling This has proved to be a major challenge as, despite the contractors installing insulation between the ceiling and the freezer floor above, we are still seeing significant moisture build up, which is extremely frustrating as we can t replace the gib until this problem has been properly addressed.

3 We have the contractors coming back next week and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this before the open ceiling becomes a permanent fixture. An amazing performance! We have hosted the Anita Boon golf tournament over the past two days and have been privileged to see some very impressive golf from a very talented young Australian by the name of Sarah Kemp. On Thursday Sarah shot a very creditable 64 in not the easiest of conditions, to take a 7 shot lead into the second and final round. We believe the score would most certainly be a women s club record for our course, but unfortunately due to having clean and place through the green, this could not be made official. Well done to Sarah and good luck both to her in her final round today and the upcoming NZ Women s Open at Windross Farm. Forthcoming Golf Events: FINAL CALL! The Grand Slam Cup 3 rd round is now being held tomorrow Saturday 23 rd September This is the final Grand Slam event of the year (celebrating the British Open) and a major prize giving will follow the Shotgun start at 12.15pm. The tee booking is open to accept last minute bookings. To mark the significance of this for Union Jack s, who offer a fine selection of British food stuffs, Craig Dixon will be offering members a chance to sample some of his tasty wares. So for this occasion, think British for the day and come and support this worthy sponsor. Eagles Golfing Society (Halberg Tournament) on Friday 6 th October at 12.30pm. Shotgun start. NSGC is hosting the Eagles Golfing Society Halberg Tournament this year. This event is open to all Men/Women golfers you don t have to be a member of the Eagles. Entry cost is $60.00 per person and details of how to enter are available in the Locker Rooms. We hope that NSGC members will support this very worthwhile cause. NSGC U19 Junior Classic on Monday 9 th October 2017: North Shore GC is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our annual: North Shore Golf Club U19 Junior Classic 2017 (proudly Sponsored by St Patrick s Day Golf Classic Charitable Trust) on Monday 9 th October This is a very popular junior event with excellent prizes, together with a lunch pack for each player and food afterwards all for just $35.00 per person. Normally oversubscribed and supported by U19 boys/girls from Auckland, North Harbour and further afield, we are now taking applications for this year s event. From the Course: Course Condition Greens For many years in the turf industry (internationally and here in New Zealand) there has been an on-going war on Poa annua - this being the scientific name for what is commonly known as winter grass, Poa, meadow grass as well as many unsavoury names too nasty to mention in Shoretalk, has proven to be an ultra-tough species to conquer! When new golf courses are built, they will tend to sow all their greens with what is locally the best putting turf type for that area. For the majority of New Zealand golf courses, that has been Colonial Browntop, or otherwise known as Browntop bentgrass which is native to New Zealand. Through the 60 s, 70 s and 80 s, Browntop greens were being invaded with Poa annua, with only hand picking the invader out of the putting surfaces as the only means for control. New science was developing for chemical manufacturers where new Plant Growth Regulators (PGR s) and a range of herbicides, were being tested in cropping and it was found that they also had a controlling effect on Poa. At the time when these chemicals were released, we all thought our prayers were being answered! Unfortunately it hasn t turned out to be the panacea we had been looking for, as even today we all still struggle to either control Poa or keep it alive. So in a nutshell when Browntop/Poa greens are well balanced and controlled they are amongst the best putting surfaces in the world. However, getting them to that point and keeping them there is not easy and comes at quite a significant cost. Here at our club, like most good clubs around the world we are looking carefully at balancing the quality of the playing surfaces with our budget. With this in mind I have been tasked to do a study of what is the best putting surface is for us. i.e can we provide a better surface for the membership that is sustainable at a more cost effective level, or are we better off with what we have and just need to budget for the higher levels of maintenance cost. Sometimes it s better to take one or two steps back, to then be able to move 5 to 10 steps forward

5 In the mean-time, our team will do the very best we can to keep our greens in the best possible condition throughout the year fingers crossed we have an untroubled summer! Tony Jonas. Golf Course Superintendent Pennants: Senior Men s Inter Club Pennants: The team had a tough day at Warkworth against Warkworth 2 on Tuesday 19 th September The home team played particularly well and the general consensus was that our boys struggled a little bit with the speed of the greens (slower than they are used to). Despite this, three of our players still played to their handicap or better, but the 41.5/30.5 loss confirmed the dominance of the home team! The next round (Rd 5) of the competition will be held at NSGC on Monday 2 nd October 2017 against Wainui. We wish the team well on their home track. Juniors: NSGC Junior Strokeplay Championship and qualification for Matchplay Championship. This important event is being held on Sunday 8 th October If you would like to have the opportunity to compete in this year s Strokeplay Championship and try to qualify for the Matchplay Championship, the sign-up sheet and full details of the competition are available in the Junior Room. North Harbour v Auckland: Sunday 17 th September 2017 at Remuera GC and Sunday 24 th September 2017 at North Shore GC: Seven of our up and coming Junior players have been selected to play in a Junior development match against Auckland Jaewoo Son, Cole Manson, Kerry Wang, Luke Ho, Brady Sylvester, Ross Allott and Alex Yap. The first match was held at Remuera last Sunday and the 2 nd match is being held at NSGC this Sunday. Jaewoo, Cole, Brady, Luke and Ross played last Sunday all the boys played really well with Harbour taking a 5.5/2.5 lead in to the 2 nd Rd. This week, Kerry and Alex join the team. Answer: True Explanation: Rules 20-7c and c: If a competitor makes a stroke from a wrong place, he incurs a penalty of two strokes under the applicable Rule. 26-1: If a ball is found in a water hazard or if it is known or virtually certain that a ball that has not been found is in the water hazard (whether the ball lies in the water or not), the player may under the penalty of one stroke: a. Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5): or b. Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped; or c.
