1 The North Shore Golf Club Junior Golfing Program Where playing golf is having fun Introduction At North Shore Golf Club we have one of NZ'S largest junior memberships with over 110 Junior's in the membership. A consistent and accessible program for children is required with

2 different levels of skill sets forming each separate level. The goal is to have a junior join the club and progress through the many junior levels on offer and making the ultimate as a player representing the Club and representing the local association in a representative team. The junior coaching programs will be under the direction of the Club Professional along with the Junior Convenor, the Golf Operations Manager, The Club Selector, the President and the General Manager. The programs will be reviewed annually and not necessarily adjusted. By running these junior progression levels, it will provide North Shore with a standard of excellence for Junior Golf leading the way in the Auckland/North Harbour region. There is an expectation there will be 6 Junior Meetings held each year to consist of the Golf Operations Manager, Club Professional, Junior Co-Ordinator and the Club Captain. In achieving the standards set, these programs will provide a welcome environment for young people with a structured Junior Program based on quality coaching. The Program The Program has a five tier coaching structure run by the Clubs resident Golf Professional. 1. Level (1) Junior Starters: The programme provides a series of golf sessions to students, which teaches them a range of basic golf skills in a fun, active and colourful style. The aim is that participants will have a lot of fun and see golf as a sport that is both accessible and fun. This programme is for brand new golfers (boys and girls) between the ages of 6-10 years. The programme covers basic golf instruction, etiquette and has a major emphasis on fun. Starts at 2pm on Saturdays and runs for 45 minutes. Gold coin donation required. Membership to NSGC is required after one trial session. Obtain a handicap index A basic knowledge of etiquette and rules 2. Level (2) Junior Rockets: This is our second level for North Shore juniors, this group suits boys and girls aged 8-14 with some experience in the game. The programme covers golf instruction, etiquette and golf rules. Starts at 2:45pm on Saturdays and runs for 45 minutes. Gold coin donation required. Membership to NSGC is required after one trial session. Obtain a handicap index Play in junior pennants if their ability allows A basic knowledge of etiquette and rules

3 3. Junior Development For juniors with a handicap index. This is a more advanced programme and will cover golf instruction, etiquette, golf rules and course play. This clinic will commence at 4pm on Saturdays and run for 60 minutes. Gold coin donation required. Membership to NSGC is a requirement. Have obtained a handicap index Play in open junior club tournaments Play in junior pennants if selected A sound knowledge of etiquette and rules The ability to play in the Saturday field if their handicap index is 14.0 or lower 4. Advanced Development For juniors of any age that play off a single figure handicap or any other boy or girl referred by the Club Professional. This group of juniors can be either boys or girls and have the right to participate in all club competitions. They would be expected to participate in all compulsory scrambles whenever applicable and have no specific junior tee times allocated to them. We would see this group of juniors integrating with the wider club membership. These juniors would have to play with one of the following club personal prior to having this privilege attached to them: A Golf Committee member Golf Operations Manager General Manager President Club Professional A standard form for each junior working to obtain this right would be signed off by one of the above. See Appendix 1. There would be no caddies permitted and any complaints or reports of unruly behaviour post approval would have their playing privileges reviewed by the Junior Committee. 5. Academy This programme is for elite players who have been selected by the academy committee. Players reaching this level are ear marked as having potential as representative players. Players in this group receive weekly coaching mainly focused on short game, mental application, golf rules, nutrition and on course play. These players receive additional benefits with subsidised range balls and some tournament expenses covered. Currently the Academy is in recess with the goal to reintroduce the Academy in Membership to NSGC is required. 6. Representative Golf The club has had a long history of success in representative golf. Junior pennants and senior pennants is an inter club competition which is keenly sought after. Players that shine at this level will catch the eye of the North Harbour provincial selectors. The pinnacle of representative golf at provincial level is the men's and women's interprovincial as well as the senior men's and senior women s interprovincial. Players reaching this level are given

4 benefits by the club. Players reaching New Zealand representative status receive higher benefits. Membership to NSGC is required. Betty Austin Memorial Girls Clinic This is a standalone programme with a $1000 donation from the Austin family annually and is designed to be a specific girl s program for beginners and those with less than two years experience in the game. The programme covers basic golf instruction, etiquette and has a major emphasis on fun. This clinic commences at 4:30pm each Wednesday and is for 60 minutes. Gold coin donation required. Membership to NSGC is required. Information 1. On Course Play Sunday is junior competition day. Juniors need to book online and arrive at the course at 8:15am for a start from 8:30am. The players are shuffled into different groups and names called over the microphone. Member credits are on offer for those that play well in the club competitions. This is for players with handicaps. The Junior Convenor is in attendance on the day and supervisors the juniors and the competitions. For the Starter and Rocket groups, NSGC offer the opportunity to play on the course after the junior coaching on a Saturday, usually around 3:15pm, this nine is set aside for juniors and parents. This is a good way to put into practice what has been learnt in the junior coaching clinic on the day or as a way to submit a card for handicapping. All juniors on joining the club will receive a new members induction pack in two languages. 2. Funding Bi Annually the NSGC runs a Junior Fundraising Tournament in October to make available the funds to make these junior programs work. The club will continue to run these coaching programs and junior membership incentives for elite golfers through this fund. However if this tournament was to cease then a change in strategy would be required. There is an expectation many parents would be involved in the tournament in some form either as a volunteer or sponsor.
