Chua and Sheary finish in three-way tie for first to earn tri-medalist honors Oct. 5, 2008 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In the truest definition of team golf, the Wake Forest women s golf team carded its second straight round of 291 to finish at 12-over and win the 2008 Lady Tar Heel Invitational by 12 shots Sunday afternoon at the UNC Finley Golf Course. The Deacons used a complete team effort over the three days to win its first tournament of the season. Sophomore Natalie Sheary and senior Nannette Hill led the team the first two days shooting 3-under and 1-under, respectively. On Sunday, senior Jean Chua carded a 2-under 70 and freshman Cheyenne Woods came through with her best round of the season, a 1-under par 71. Junior Dolores White added three steady rounds over the weekend. Chua and Sheary both finished the tournament at even par, 216 to share medalist honors with North Carolina s Catherine O Donnell. Chua s round of 70 on Sunday was her lowest round of the season. Sheary led the tournament at 3-under par coming into the day and carded a 75 on Sunday to finish at even. As a team, the Deacons carded rounds of to win the tournament by 12 strokes over host North Carolina. The win was the first for Wake since winning the Landfall Tradition last October. The Deacons led by 11 shots coming into the final round and saw its lead shrink to just eight shots by the turn. North Carolina ultimately pulled to within five shots early on in the back nine but a strong finish from Chua and Woods gave the Deacons enough to pull out the victory. Chua got off to a bit of a rough start, making a bo- gie on her third hole of the day but she found her swing and birdied the sixth hole to get back to even. After a bogie on 11, Chua made back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 to move to 1-under for the day. She pared out on the back nine to post a 35 and had one hole to play. She would convert the birdie on No. 1 and carded a round of 70. This was the second time Chua has claimed medalist honors in her career. Sheary had a bit of a rough day but she hung in nicely even though the short putts weren t falling. She carded 15 pars and just three bogies for her round of 75. This marks the second time in Sheary s young career she has claimed medalist honors as she also won the Northrup Grumman Regional last February. Woods started the day on the third hole and opened with six pars and a bogie through No. 9. On the back, Woods posted her first birdie on No. 13 and another on 16 to move to 1-under. She bogied 17 but rebounded with a birdie on the tough par-4 18th to post 2-under 34 on the back nine. She would finish off her round with a pair of pars on holes one and two to finish with a 71. Woods ended the tournament tied for 28th. Like Sheary, Hill also carded a round of 75 on Sunday. She shot rounds of 71 and 72 in the first two rounds and wound up finishing the tournament tied for fourth. White played steady on the front nine making just one bogie to card a 37 but a couple of tough holes on the back nine gave her a final round of 78. She opened with a 79 but played well yesterday posting a 76. White finished the tournament tied for 53rd. No. 9 Demon Deacons Win the Landfall Tradition By A Stunning 28-shots Junior Dolores White claims her first career medalist honors. Oct. 26, 2008 WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior Dolores White made six birdies in her round of 2-under 70 to come from be- hind and claim her first career medalist honors as the Lady Deacons ran away with the team title at the Landfall Tradition Sunday afternoon. The No. 9 ranked Demon Deacons entered the final round with a 23-shot lead and proceeded to extend that margin to 28 with a final round 295. Wake dominated throughout the entire tournament as all five players finished in the top-15 and the Deacs carded the lowest team score all three days. This was the second straight year that Wake has swept the team and individual titles at the Landfall. Last season, the Deacs won by nine shots as Nannette Hill captured her first career medalist honors. The win was also the second straight team title for Wake as it also dominated the Lady Tar Heel Invitational earlier this month. White had come into the weekend with a season-low round of 76 but went on to shoot rounds of =218 (+2) to claim her first career medalist honors. White made a total of six birdies on the day, including two in her final three holes to secure the victory. Senior Jean Chua also had a good finish, making birdie on three of her final four holes to finish in third place with a round of 72. Chua made three bogies and two birdies in her first nine holes and a double bogie on No. 11 dropped her to 3-over on the day. After a birdie on No. 13 and a bogie on 15, Chua was 8-over with four holes to play. She would birdie the 16th, 18th and 1st hole to finish the tournament at 5-over. Sophomore Natalie Sheary opened her final round with a birdie and two bogies for an opening nine of 1-over 37. After her second birdie of the back nine on No. 13, Sheary was within one shot of the White at 4-over. But a pair of bogies coming in dropped her to a tie for 4th with a final round 75. Woods had the individual lead coming into the final round but just couldn t get anything going on Sunday. She carded matching nines of 39 for a final round 78 to finish tied for 6th. Hill got off to an up-and-down start making three bogies and a double but also adding a pair of birdies in her first seven holes. She would then post seven pars on the back nine and finish with a final round 81. She finished the tournament tied for 15th. Hill had a good four-year run at the Landfall as she won the tournament last fall and finished tied for 4th as a freshman and a tied for 25th as a sophomore. Wake has won 33 tournament championships, 29 individual tournament championships and has finished the season ranked among the nation s top 20 for 13 of the past 14 years. Below is a look at Wake Forest women s golf history through the tenures of Deacon head coaches: ches: Marge Crisp ( ) It all began with Marge Crisp, the first Demon Deacon women s head coach from 1971 to While at the helm, Crisp guided the 1976, 1977 and 1980 squads to NCAIAW Championships. Her team was ranked 17th nationally. Crisp produced greats such as the program s first All-American, Charlotte Grant, as well as LPGA cardholders Debbie Rhodes and Patty Jordan. Crisp split her coaching duties with administrative ones as well. After coming to Wake Forest in 1947, Crisp was head of the women s physical education program until 1976 and served as coordinator of women s athletics until 1973 when she retired to concentrate solely on women s golf. Amy Geithner ( ) After Crisp stepped down, former Deacon standout Amy Geithner took over as head coach. Geithner led the Demon Deacons from She was a former Deacon player under Crisp from Geithner s team recorded two third-place ACC finishes in her two years at the helm. She resigned in 1985 to concentrate on her professional career. Mary Beth McGirr ( ) Geithner s replacement was Mary Beth McGirr, who took the program to a new level. In her first year, McGirr coached the Deacons to the 1986 ACC Championship, the program s first conference title. McGirr was awarded the ACC Coach of the Year that season as well. That year the Deacons were ranked 21st nationally and boasted first team All-American Brenda Corrie. Wake Forest earned a No. 31 national ranking in 1988 before McGirr resigned from the position. In her first year at the helm, McGirr coached Wake Forest to the 1986 ACC Championship and subsequently was named the ACC Coach of the Year Dianne Dailey (1988-present) Then came former LPGA standout, Dianne ne Dailey, who took over the reins in Dailey joined the program as the new director of women s athletics as well as head women s golf coach, the first full-time athletic staff member to serve in that dual role. Dailey served in both capacities until 1999 when she gave up her administrative duties to concentrate solely on coaching. Although Dailey s Deacons took four years of cultivating, the time spent paid off. Dailey gave Wake Forest its first NCAA berth in the season. The Demon Deacons finished third in the NCAA East Regionals to advance to the NCAA Championships. Wake finished seventh in the program s first national tournament appearance. The 1994 and 2008 Landfall Tradition Champions 1995 seasons were unprecedented d ones for Wake Forest women s golf, as the Deacs won the ACC and NCAA East Regional Championships both years. In 1995, the Deacons finished third in the NCAA A Championships, a program high. Dailey groomed her first All-American in Laura D Alessandro became Wake Forest s third All-American after winning the Lady Tar Heel and Duke Fall Invitationals, qualifying for the 1989 U.S. Open and finishing 13th at the 1990 NCAA Championships. Two years later, Stephanie Neill earned All-America honors as a freshman, the first of her four straight All-America selections. She remains the only player in ACC history to accomplish such a feat. Her initial selection in 1992 began a streak of seven consecutive years that Dailey coached an All-American. In addition to Neill s honors from , Laura Philo-Diaz was an All-American in 1996 and 1997, while Alexandra Armas earned the honor in 1995 and 1998 to finish off the streak. Marta Prieto became the seventh Deacon to be named All-America, earning second team honors in In 2002, Nuria Clau earned honorable mention honors. The next year in her senior season, Clau was named to the All-America s e c o n d team. In 2005, A s h l e y Hoagland was named first team NGCA All- American and also earned ed Academic c All-America honors. Mandy Goins became e Wake s 10th All-American after being named an honorable mention recipient by the NGCA in 2006 and Most recently, Natalie Sheary received Golfweek and NGCA honorable mention All-American honors as a freshman in Dailey s Deacons have compiled 24 team victories, have made 16 consecutive NCAA appearances and have been ranked in the final top 20 for more than 11 years. The program has graduated four studentathletes who have been named Academic All-Americans eight times. Dailey believes that the university s golf tradition parallels that of football and basketball at other universities around the nation. Many other schools treat golf as a secondary sport, but here it is a major sport. Students want to be a part of the Wake Forest tradition, she says. Wake Forest women s golf has cultivated a rich tradition to match its rich history. Although the faces change from year to year, the commitment to success will always remain the same. 13 46 WOMEN S GOLF SCHOLARSHIPS The Wake Forest women s and men s golf programs have been considered among the nation s elite for many years, and that tradition will hopefully continue thanks to the generosity of some faithful Demon Deacon supporters. Over the last 10 years, seven major scholarships have been established for the women s program in the names of William J. Brame, Rex Carter, the Cooke Foundation, Thomas M. Dozier, Joseph M. Bryan, Carl and Linda Tucker family, Helen Ann Ward Straughan and Laura Laws. An avid golf fan and successful businessman, Bryan left a $500,000 bequest to Wake Forest in order to help support the men s and women s teams. The gift was part of an estimated $13 million he left to charities, non-profit agencies, churches and educational institutions upon his death in Joe Bryan was one of the most generous souls North Carolina has ever known, said then-wake Forest President Thomas K. Hearn. He was a joyful giver, who changed the lives of countless people who benefited from his generosity. He will be remembered as one of our state s most visionary philanthropists. Bryan moved to Greensboro in 1931 and was a top executive for 30 years with what is now Jefferson-Pilot Corporation. He loved golf, as evidenced by his annual attendance at The Masters and involvement with the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic. He joined Augusta National Golf Club in the early 1940s at the invitation of golfing legend Bobby Jones. The Bryan scholarships will be awarded to a rising junior on each team and will be based on the player s contributions to the team and academic achievement. It s very exciting to see the women s program get this attention, said women s head coach Dianne Dailey. Since it s an upperclass scholarship it will give the players something to work toward. It will be an incentive and a reward for good play and academics. The Bryan scholarship announcement came on the heels of a major gift from Rex Carter, a 1939 graduate of Wake Forest and a member of the men s basketball team that participated in the inaugural NCAA Tournament. He established a Former Demon Deacons Marta Prieto, Katie Brenny and Kelly Kirwin with Rex Carter, who established a scholarship for the women s golf program. scholarship because of his long affection toward women s golf and the players who have passed through the program. Another scholarship was added by the Cooke Foundation on behalf of Donald and Elizabeth Cooke. The Foundation was established by Mrs. Cooke in 1988 and the Board of Directors established its initial gift for a scholarship in The Cookes moved from New Jersey to Pinehurst in the 1950s to retire and pursue their love for golf. The scholarship will be awarded d each year to a deserving member of the women s team. The Thomas M. Dozier Athletic/Academic c Excellence Scholarship Fund was established in 1996 with an initial gift from Wake Forest friend Tom Dozier, of Augusta, Ga. The purpose of the fund is to provide a merit scholarship to an undergraduate student who is a member of a varsity golf team. The Milne Scholarship was established in 1986 in memory of Andrew Milne, the son of former WFU golfer Dennis Milne. The scholarship was originally established for the men s program but now members of the women s team are eligible to receive the scholarship. The scholarship is awarded yearly to a team member, who may be, but does not necessarily have to be, from Pennsylvania. J. William Straughan, who served in the Wake Forest University advancement office from established the Helen Ann Ward Straughan Fund in 1988 in honor of his mother. In January 2002, the Carl and Linda Tucker Family Athletic Scholarship was established, providing a scholarship for a varsity athlete with preference given to the men s and women s golf teams. Carl Tucker, from Pageland, S.C., is a 1968 Wake Forest graduate. He and his wife, Linda, have four sons, two of whom also graduated from Wake Forest. Dr. Caryl Guth, Class of 1957, is a retired physician living in the Winston-Salem area who established the Caryl Guth Women s Golf Endowed Scholarship in December This scholarship goes to a member of the varsity team or an incoming varsity member each year. Dr. Guth participated in several sports while attending Wake Forest before the women s collegiate program truly began. She continues to be involved in many areas of Wake Forest University and remains a true Demon Deacon supporter. The Laura Laws Golf Scholarship was established in December, 2005 in memory of the Laura Thomas Laws, class of Laura was a member of the women s golf team for four years and was a true leader of the team. The scholarship was established by the Fourth Creek Rotary Club of Statesville, her husband and fellow Wake Forest graduate, Edwin Laws 81 from Statesville, NC and Deacon Club members Costi 73 and Teresa Kutteh 73 of Statesville. This is the only scholarship for women s golf named in honor of a former player. 15 48 WAKE FOREST GOLF PROJECT Wake Forest Athletics Facility Renovation Wake Forest Golf has an unmatched tradition of excellence. Although twenty years ago an on-campus facility like the Jesse I. Haddock Golf Center was unique in college golf, Wake Forest must now reinvest in the facility to keep pace with the subsequent growth of collegiate practice complexes. Contributing to the Golf Project will enable Wake Forest to continue the dominance and legacy of the golf program. Wake Forest Golf Project Overview Wake Forest Golf has the opportunity to expand the on-campus golf facility onto the adjacent land currently occupied by the baseball stadium, offering the potential for a significant recruiting advantage. The new land would more than double the size of the current golf complex and allow more room for valuable amenities essential to maintaining a competitive edge. Planned facility improvements include: A state-of-the-art on-campus practice facility. A true home for the golf programs with locker rooms, meeting areas and coaches offices. An area to showcase the rich tradition and heritage of Wake Forest Golf. Providing a state-of-the-art practice facility The new facility, designed by the Arnold Palmer Design Company, will provide tremendous player development opportunities and invaluable amenities essential to maintaining a competitve edge. Providing a true home for Wake Forest Golf The renovated practice complex will feature a new house that will provide enough space to house both the men s and women s golf programs and will serve as a source of pride for all connected with the program. We desperately need this new practice complex to stay even more competitive and to help our students become champions. -Dianne Dailey
