8 Legendary Spartans Mary McMillin Fossum was the first and only head coach in the history of Spartan women s golf prior to 1997, coaching from 1973 until her retirement. For 17 of those years, Fossum was part of a unique coaching pair as her husband, Bruce, coached the MSU men s team for 25 seasons before his retirement in Under Fossum s guidance, the Spartans won an unprecedented five straight Big Ten titles from and played in six consecutive AIAW National Championships ( ). The Spartans regained the conference crown in 1982 and played in the 1982 and 1984 NCAA Championships. MSU claimed its third conference runner-up spot under Fossum at the 1987 Big Ten Championship. Those accomplishments led to recognition of Fossum as one of the country s best collegiate golf coaches. She was honored as the first-ever NCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 1984 and was inducted into the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in In 1999, Michigan State s annual fall women s golf tournament was renamed the Mary Fossum Invitational. In January of 1998, Fossum was honored by the College Golf Foundation with the Rolex/Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award for outstanding service and contributions to collegiate women s golf. She was inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 27, A native of Green Bay, Wis., Fossum won the Wisconsin women s golf championship in 1945, 1946 and One of the many highlights of her career was her match-play victory over Mildred (Babe) Didrikson- Zaharias in the 1946 Women s Western Amateur semifinals. Fossum was inducted in 1990 into the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame, making her only the fifth woman to achieve that distinction. Fossum also was involved at the national level, serving as a member of the NCAA golf committee which guides the national development and administration of women s collegiate golf. The Fossums, who have four children and nine grandchildren, reside in Okemos. Mary Fossum Award Winners Year Player Team 2007 Maria Hernandez Purdue MARY FOSSUM Former Head Coach Michigan State 25 Years Golf Coaches Hall of Fame (1998) MSU Athletics Hall of Fame (2003) The Mary Fossum Award The Big Ten Conference office accepted the women s golf coaches recommendation for the creation of the Mary Fossum Award, the league announced on April 17, The award, named after the former Michigan State women s golf coach, will be presented to the student-athlete with the lowest stroke average according to the Golfstat.com rankings. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must play in a minimum of six tournaments. For studentathletes who participate in more than six events with at least three teams at the event, all scores will count. The first Mary Fossum Award was handed out before the Big Ten Championships at Forest Akers Golf Course, which began on Friday, April 27, I m so surprised but thrilled to think that the Big Ten would name the award for lowest scoring average after me, Fossum said. I don t know what to say. It s great. It s wonderful. It s an honor not only for Mary, but for me as one of her former players, the whole golf program, and our university, Michigan State head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. It says a lot about Mary as a person, and for what she has done in the game of college golf, that she was chosen to be honored. There ve been a lot of great people associated with Big Ten golf, so for it to be Mary just makes it so thrilling. We re so excited. 8 Big Ten C hampionships 34 All-Big Ten S elections The Michigan State University Athletics Department announced the receipt of its first-ever fully endowed scholarship on May 9, A $300,000 anonymous gift was revealed by former MSU Director of Athletics Clarence Underwood to fully fund a scholarship in the Spartan women s golf program and will bear the name of longtime head women s golf coach Mary Fossum ( ). The Athletics Department is extremely proud and grateful to receive this generous commitment, stated Dr. Underwood. Our women s golf program has a strong tradition of excellence and to bear the name of our Hall of Fame coach is certainly most appropriate. Under current head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll s The Mary Fossum Endowed Scholarship For Women s Golf direction, the MSU women s golf team has made nine straight NCAA Regional appearances ( ) and five NCAA Championship appearances (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2007). MSU captured the 2001 Big Ten title, its first since the 1982 season, as Slobodnik was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year and both recaptured the titles in We have strived to continue the outstanding legacy that Coach Fossum established, said Slobodnik- Stoll. This gift just puts our program one step closer to our championship goals. Several Spartan athletic teams have benefitted from partially endowed scholarships, but this $300,000 gift insures a full-ride scholarship in perpetuity. The guidelines for the Fossum Scholarship provide for the recipient to be a student-athlete with high academic standing at MSU, who has completed her junior season of competition. The Ralph Young Fund staff in our Development Office did a superb job in making this gift a reality, said Dr. Underwood. And I truly believe it will influence other alumni and friends to step forward and fund scholarships in other sports as we look to the future. The Mary Fossum Golf Scholarship could be just the beginning of a new era in philanthropy for Spartan athletics, stated Chris Ritrievi, former Director of Development for MSU Intercollegiate Athletics. Although the family wishes to remain anonymous, they know how deeply we cherish their loyal generosity. M i c h i g a n S t a t e S p a r t a n s w w w. m s u s p a r t a n s. c o m 21
