1 THE HISTORY OF THE WNYPGA When the PGA of America was formed in 1916, there were seven original sections, one of them being the Metropolitan Section, which was the entire state of New York. On June 3, 1925, the Western New York Section officially became a part of the PGA of America by the submission of a check from Mr. E.L. Worrell, who was affiliated with A.G. Spalding & Brothers Sports Division in Buffalo, NY. The check was for $55, which was a $5 annual due for each of the original 11 members. By 1929, there were 24 PGA Sections, with a total of 2,000 members, and the membership of the Western New York PGA grew to 48 professionals. Today, there are 41 PGA Sections, with a total of over 28,000 members and apprentices. The Western New York Section is comprised of 240 members and 40 apprentices. Geographically, the Western New York Section is bordered to the west and north by lakes Erie and Ontario respectively. The southern border dips about 20 miles into Pennsylvania and includes the cities of Erie, Warren and Bradford. The eastern border is a line that extends along and beyond NYS Route 14. There are approximately 230 golf facilities in the section. Until 1984, the Western New York Section was administered by the officers of the Section who had to help administer programs while also performing their duties at their clubs. Up until the spring of 2016, the Section had an office building located in Williamsville, New York (pictured above). The staff has since relocated to an office at the Fox Valley Country Club in Lancaster, New York. The WNYPGA Hall of Fame, located in the Western New York Section Office, currently consists of 27 individuals who have made a significant impact in their lives and the lives of others through the game of golf in Western New York and beyond.

2 WNYPGA OFFICERS WNYPGA President Michael O Connor, PGA Kahkwa Club Erie, Pennsylvania Michael O Connor, PGA Head Professional in his 16th year at Kahkwa Club, an 18 hole private club in Erie, Pennsylvania, is serving in his first year as WNYPGA President. This is his 10 th year on the WNYPGA Board of Directors. He has served two years as the Chairman of the Education Committee, two years as WNYPGA Growth of the Game Chairman, 2 years as WNYPGA Secretary, and most recently as WNYPGA Vice President. Michael was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He graduated from Bishop s University in Quebec, Canada. He previously served as Head Professional at Salem Golf Club (Salem, OH), as an assistant at Oakmont Country Club (Oakmont, PA) and Bent Pine Golf Club (Vero Beach, FL). A PGA Member since 1995, O Connor has been the Head Professional at Kahkwa Club since He was the WNYPGA Section Champion in 2001 and runner up in Michael also won the 2006 Tournament of Champions and was the runner up for the Match Play Championship in He was honored with the Horton Smith award in 2006 and In 2008 Michael was named the WNYPGA Professional of the year as well as WNYPGA Teacher of the year. Michael was the winner of the 2011 President s Plaque and most recently, in 2011 he won the award for Merchandiser of the Year at a private course.

3 WNYPGA OFFICERS WNYPGA Vice President Rob Horak, PGA Ravenwood GC Rochester, NY Rob Horak is the PGA Teaching Professional for Ravenwood G.C., Victor, NY serving in his first year as WNYPGA Vice President. Rob served most recently as Secretary in 2015 and as Tournament Chairman in 2012 and Horak was working as Director of Instruction and a Personal Coach for GolfTEC Rochester from before moving on to Ravenwood G.C. in He was named the WNYPGA Professional of the year in 2004, Teacher of the Year in 2006, and the Horton Smith Award winner in Rob is a two-time Player of the Year, five- time WNYPGA Section Champion, and 2012 WNYPGA Senior Champion. Rob is also a quarter century member of the PGA and won Teacher of the Year in Rob previously served as Head Professional at Blue Heron Hills Country Club, Clifton Springs Country Club, and Deerfield Country Club. He was also an Assistant Professional at Ontario Golf Club. Horak competed collegiately at the University of Notre Dame and was a two-time Most Valuable Player. He has served on the WNYPGA Section Board of Directors for over ten years.

4 WNYPGA OFFICERS WNYPGA Secretary Dan Antonucci, PGA Niagara Frontier CC Youngstown, NY Dan Antonucci is a "Quarter Century Member" of the Professional Golfers Association of America and the PGA Head Golf Professional at the Niagara Frontier C.C. in Youngstown, NY since He served his apprenticeship at two WNYPGA Section golf courses, Lancaster C.C. and Crag Burn G.C. from Dan was elected to the WNYPGA Board of Directors in He has chaired multiple committees for the WNYPGA Board, such Ethics, Public Relations, Growth of the Game, and the Communications Committees. He was elected in 2010 through 2015 as the WNYPGA Director of Area 2 - Buffalo. A PGA Member since 1989, Dan was named the WNYPGA Golf Professional of the Year in 2011, and was the 2012 recipient of the WNYPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award. In 2015, he was awarded the WNYPGA Player Development Award. Additionally, he was selected as the recipient of the WNYPGA President's Plaque for three consecutive years, 2008, 2009, and Since 1997, he has instructed and/or been the supervising Professional for the "Clubs for Kids" Golf Program held each year at Delaware Park, Buffalo, NY. In 2015, he was elected to serve on the Buffalo District Golf Association Board of Directors. He serves on multiple community boards in Niagara County, such as the Mt. St. Mary's Hospital, Board of Associates, and Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Falls.

5 WNYPGA OFFICERS PGA District IV Director Tim Fries, PGA Transit Valley CC East Amherst, NY Tim has served as the PGA Head Professional at Transit Valley CC since 2000, having served as the club s Assistant Professional for three years prior. Fries had also been an assistant professional at Orchard Park CC, CC of Buffalo, Ridgegmont CC, and Brierwood CC. He has served as a WNYPGA Officer from 1999 through to Fries was named WNYPGA Golf Professional of the Year in 2002, and is a three-time recipient of the section s Bill Strausbaugh Award. He was Assistant Professional of the Year in 1998 & 1999, received the WNYPGA Community Service Award in 2007, and was named Merchandiser of the Year in Among his playing accomplishments, Fries earned Player of the Year honors in 1998, is a two-time WNYPGA Match Play Champion, captured the 2010 WNYPGA Section Championship, and has five WNYPGA Professional Championships to his name. In 2012 he was awarded with the Merchandiser of the Year at a private course award. In 2014 he was awarded the President s Plaque and was the senior player of the year. He was most recently selected by the WNYPGA to represent the PGA of America s District IV on the Board of Directors, with his term started in November of 2014.

6 WNYPGA OFFICERS WNYPGA Executive Director Joe Bertino, PGA Joe Bertino is serving his seventh year as the WNYPGA Executive Director. He previously served as the section Tournament Director and Junior Golf Director for 4 years. Prior to joining the section staff in 2005, he had served as head professional at Shelridge Country Club (Medina, NY), and also held assistant professional positions at Transit Valley Country Club (East Amherst, NY),Westwood Country Club (Williamsville, NY), Springville Country Club (Springville, NY), Lockport Town & Country Club (Lockport, NY), and Brookhaven Country Club (Dallas, TX). A graduate of the PGA of America s first PGM program at Ferris State University, Bertino (elected to PGA Membership in 1995) was the WNYPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award winner in 2007 and is a three time recipient of the section s Junior Golf Leader Award (2006, 2008, 2009).

13 AWARDS Professional of the Year The WNYPGA Golf Professional of the Year Award is determined annually by the Section to honor the working club professional whose total contributions to the game best exemplify the complete PGA golf professional.
