5 UGA GOLF COURSE UGA LAYOUT HAS HOSTED FIVE NATIONALS The University of Georgia Golf Course opened in 1968 with the purpose of supporting the university community and a collegiate golf program. Over the years the course has become an important recreation facility not only for the University, but for the state of Georgia as a whole. Avid golfer Dr. Omer C. Aderhold served as the University of Georgia s President from and was a driving force behind the creation of the UGA Golf Course. Dr. Aderhold loved the game of golf, said Liz Murphey, UGA s legendary women s coach and athletics administrator, during the 1993 NCAA Championships. He was the reason the course was built. The University already owned the land and Dr. Aderhold was a personal friend of Robert Trent Jones Sr., the golf course s architect. In addition, UGA students were so interested in having a golf course that they agreed to pay for it in their student activity fees over a five-year period during the 1960s. Over its history, the UGA Golf Course hosted a number of different tournaments including the annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, the PGA Junior Championship, the Men s and Women s SEC Championships, Men s and Women s NCAA Regionals, as well as the women s collegiate national championships on five occasions the 1971 Division of Girls and Women s Sports (DGWS) Intercollegiate Championships, the 1981 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Championships and the 1983, 1993 and 2013 NCAA Championships. By 1990, the course needed heavy renovation and Dave Cousart, the golf course manager, worked to rebuild the greens and irrigation system, as well as integrate a number of Jones features that had been left out because of the limited budget back in the 1960s. COLLEGE GOLF S HOME COURSE You could even say this venue is to women s collegiate championships in the same fashion as what Oakmont Country Club might be to the U.S. Open. Five times the UGA Golf Course has hosted the women s national championship (1971, 81, 83, 93 and 2013). Oakmont Country Club has hosted eight U.S. Opens. Lance Ringler, Golfweek during 2013 NCAA Championships In May 2006, the greens and the greens complex were completely renovated by Love Golf Design of St. Simons Island. The new green design brought the course up to the championship standards of today s top professional and collegiate players. The greens are very characteristic of a Jones course and the renovation included 21 new tees, making the course more versatile for both amateurs and professionals. From , the UGA Golf Course hosted the Stadion Classic, an event on the PGA s Nationwide Tour and later web.com Tours. The UGA layout joined only a handful of university courses to ever host a Nationwide Tour event since the tour s first tournament in In 2009, the UGA golf course was named one of the top-10 public courses in Georgia by Golfweek Magazine, as well as one of the best 25 best university courses in the nation by Links Magazine. In 2016, the UGA course was ranked No. 8 among the top university courses in the U.S. by Golfweek. The course remains the home of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, one of the nation s longest running women s intercollegiate competitions in any sport. Traditionally a spring event, the Liz Murphey did move to the fall in 1992 and 2012 to serve as a fall preview for the following spring s NCAA Championships. The list of golfers who have competed in the LMCC reads like a Who s Who of women s golf, including LPGA Hall of Famers Beth Daniel, Betsy King and Julie Inkster as well as current standouts Stacy Lewis and Brittany Lang. OUR OWN LITTLE AMEN CORNER From the hill above the UGA Course s No. 13 green spectators can view as many as nine (or more) shots. GEORGIA GOLF 3

6 4GEORGIA GOLF LIZ MURPHEY COLLEGIATE CLASSIC The list of golfers who have competed collegiately in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic reads like a Who s Who of women s golf, including LPGA Hall of Famers Beth Daniel, Betsy King and Julie Inkster. The LMCC is one of the oldest continuous sporting events in all of women s intercollegiate athletics. Its 45th edition will be held April 7-9, The event began humbly in 1973 as the Georgia Invitational before becoming the Women s Southern Intercollegiate Championships from In 1995, the tourney was renamed in honor of Liz Murphey, UGA s Hall of Fame golf coach and long-time Senior Woman Administrator. Georgia has enjoyed much success protecting its home turf. The Bulldogs have won 13 team titles and produced 11 medalists. Georgia ruled play during the late-1990s in record-breaking fashion. Reilley Rankin fired a tourney record 11-under in The following year, UGA posted what was then a team record of 4-under to win by a whopping 44 strokes. In 2014, the Liz Murphey altered its schedule to feature stroke play and match play in advance of a similar format change for the 2015 NCAA Championships. In 2016, many of the nation s premier programs again flocked to Athens for the LMCC. UCLA s Louise Ridderstrom captured medalist honors by shooting 4-under 68 in Friday s stroke play qualifying, a performance that also led the Bruins to the top seed entering match play. UCLA then defeated Denver, Georgia and Alabama en route to capturing the LMCC team title for the first time ever. 7 Liz Murphey was one of the leading figures in the evolution and development of women s intercollegiate athletics both on the national level and at the University of Georgia. A Newnan, Ga., native, Murphey was not only an outstanding women s golf coach but also led the overall Lady Bulldog women s sports program to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s as its senior woman administrator. She died November 23, 2005, following a short illness. Liz was certainly one of the national pioneers in women s athletics and one that provided the real foundation for the program here at Georgia, said former UGA Director of Athletics Vince Dooley. Her work at Georgia was recognized across the country both as an administrator and golf coach. Murphey joined the university faculty in 1967 as an assistant professor of physical education and women s golf coach. She coordinated the women s club sports program until being named assistant athletic director for women s sports in When UGA officially added women s golf as an intercollegiate sport in the fall of 1978, Murphey already had a solid foundation in place. She led the Lady Bulldogs to 21 team and 18 individual titles from Liz s Legacy Liz Murphey s fingerprints remain on UGA women s athletics long after she retire. Murphey hired current Georgia women s head coaches Jack Bauerle (swimming and diving) and Jeff Wallace (tennis), as well as the retired Andy Landers (basketball) and Suzanne Yoculan (gymnastics). That quartet has combined to lead 19 teams to NCAA Championships and 44 squads to SEC Championships in their respective sports. She also brought in Beans Kelly as her assistant coach in 1986 and handed the reins to the golf program over shortly thereafter. Kelly led Georgia to eight SEC titles and eight top-10 finishes at the NCAAs. PUTTING UGA ON THE MAP Hosting the 1981 AIAW Nationals was perhaps Liz Murphey s finest hour as a coach and administrator. Terri Moody (upper right) captured the first-ever national title in UGA women s athletics history and the Lady Bulldogs finished second in the team field (right). LIZ MURPHEY TRIBUTE A TRUE PIONEER IN WOMEN S ATHLETICS Under Murphey, Georgia finished in the top 10 at each national championship from , including second at the 1981 AIAWs and third at the 1983 NCAAs. Additionally, Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer won individual national titles in 1981 and 1984, respectively. Murphey was the first-ever NGCA National Coach of the Year in 1984, and she was a charter member of that organization s Hall of Fame. Two of her most prestigious honors were the 1996 Rolex Meritorious Service Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Collegiate Women s Athletic Adminstators in Under her leadership, Georgia won eight of the 14 SEC women s all-sports awards, secured four national team championships and captured an additional 31 individual national titles. Murphey retired from the University in May She was inducted into the UGA Athletic Association s Circle of Honor the school s highest tribute paid to former athletes or coaches in Murphey s legacy lives on. For more than four decades, Georgia has hosted the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, appropriately one of the nation s oldest women s collegiate athletic events in any sport. GEORGIA GOLF 5

8 6GEORGIA GOLF NOTEBOOK BULLDOGS HAVE THEIR EYES ON THE PRIZE(S) Georgia Golf is accustomed to winning. Over the past three-plus decades, the Bulldogs have done so at a strong and steady pace, with 83 team and 73 individual titles from A year ago, a young bunch of Bulldogs took those standards to a different level, winning nine titles. This fall, the Bulldogs hope to not only replicate last season s performances but go even further in postseason play. As they attempt to do so, the process will probably be slightly different. A year ago, Georgia vaulted from No. 27 in the preseason rankings to spend almost all of October through May ranked among the nation s top-5 teams. This year, the Bulldogs enter the campaign ranked among most experts short list of national championship contenders. Pardon the overutilized analogy, but the team has gone from being the hunter to the hunted. Rinko Mitsunaga participated in her second U.S. Women s Open during the summer of We re going to get used to playing with a bulls eye on our back but, hey, it s much better to be there than trying to sneak around and surprise somebody, head coach Josh Brewer said. Leading the way for the Bulldogs is a trio of All-Americans Bailey Tardy (first-team WGCA & Golfweek), Harang Lee (first-team Golfweek/second-team WGCA) and Jillian Hollis (third-team Golfweek/honorable mention WGCA). This season marks just the second time in program history that the Georgia roster sported three returning All-America performers. Another accolade-earning Bulldog is back in the fold as well. Sophomore Rinko Mitsunaga, one of two golfers to play in every event a year ago, was named to the All-SEC Freshman team last spring. Three more returning letterwinners provide Brewer with winning options. Senior Mary Ellen Shuman was in the lineup for Georgia s victory at the NCAA Bryan Regional last spring. Senior Sammi Lee provided a trio of counting rounds in the Bulldogs win at the Mountain View Collegiate. Junior Isabella Skinner helped Georgia to a share of the Windy City Collegiate title last fall. Rounding out the Bulldogs roster is talented freshman Gabriela Coello, a top-25 national recruit who reached match play at both the 2014 and 2015 U.S. Girls Juniors. We ve worked hard the past few years in recruiting to have the depth that we have now, Brewer said. It doesn t matter to us who is playing 3, 4 or 5, we have faith in them. Sometimes, qualifying is harder than a tournament. I think that keeps them motivated. Hopefully, it will lead to something special this year. Brewer has not been bashful about his expectations for Georgia Golf since arriving on campus in the summer of A year ago, the Bulldogs produced a bountiful haul of victories. Georgia earned nine titles during five team and four individual, including a sweep of the NCAA Bryan Regional. Now, Brewer s Bulldogs have their sights set on even more significant hardware. We ve worked for five years to get to this point, where we start the season as one of the preseason favorites in the country, Brewer stated. Credit to the eight players on this team who have worked so hard to do that. Now, we ll see how mature we are. We re showing up and people expect us to win. We re just going to play well and hopefully have a chance to win. We do have a target on our back and it will be a great learning experience for us. It s still a young lineup with three sophomores, a freshman and a junior. A PRODUCTIVE SUMMER Following an outstanding season, Georgia s golfers did little resting on their laurels during the summer. The Bulldogs turned in stellar individual results from coast-to-coast and beyond. Most notably, both Rinko Mitsunaga and Bailey Tardy qualified for the U.S. Women s Open. Tardy won an qualifier at Butler Country Club outside Pittsburgh on the Monday before the NCAA Championships in May. Mitsunaga punched her ticket on June 3 by shooting 6-under 138 at Sugar Mill Country Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. The 2016 event represented the second Open appearance for each golfer. Tardy played in women s golf s pinnacle event in 2014, while Mitsunaga did so in 2012 as a 15 year old. Mitsunaga, Tardy and Isabella Skinner all qualified for the U.S. Women s Amateur, where each reached the match play bracket. Harang Lee returned to Spain and promptly finished as runner-up at the Spanish Amateur, her fifth top-10 and seventh top-20 finish in the last seven years. Lee also reached match play at the British Am and helped Spain to a runner-up showing in the European Team Championships. Jillian Hollis won the 116th Women s Western Golf Association Amateur Championship at the Dayton Country Club. All six of Hollis matches there went the distance. All told, she played 164 holes of golf over six days. That performance helped Hollis secure an exemption into the LPGA s Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning and O-I in Sylvania, Ohio. Gabriela Coello wrapped up her junior career with a runner-up finish at the E-Z-Go Vaughn Taylor Championship in July. She also reached match play at the Women s Southern Am, where she lost to current teammate Rinko Mitsunaga. Seniors Sammi Lee and Mary Ellen Shuman were limited on the golf course due to summer internships. Shuman did reach match play at the Western Am; however Lee did not compete while she was in New York for her internship with Barclay s. Lee s performance resulted in her accepting a full-time position with the corporation following graduation.

10 BULLDOG BIOS 8GEORGIA GOLF HEAD COACH JOSH BREWER 5th season at the University of Georgia 15th season as a collegiate coach Indiana 98 Josh Brewer s experiences with collegiate athletics had a remarkable storybook ending... or so he thought. As a senior at Indiana, Brewer birdied the final two holes to finish second individually and help the Hoosiers secure a one-stroke victory at the 1998 Big Ten Championships. While Brewer did not know so at the time, the event was the final tournament in both his career and that of legendary coach Sam Carmichael. That was the last year that a conference championship didn t earn you an automatic bid to the NCAAs, Brewer said. We were on the bubble and thought winning the Big Tens would get us in, but it didn t. Obviously, I was disappointed at the time, but to look back at it now, it was a pretty neat way to wrap up my career as a college golfer. After winning the 1998 Indiana State Amateur crown that summer, Brewer quickly moved into the business world. He accepted a position as a financial advisor with Linsco/Private Ledger in Indianapolis. Three falls later, Mike Mayer, who moved from assistant to head coach of the IU men s team after Carmichael retired, asked him to return to campus to share his experiences in golf and school and the transition to professional life with the current team. I just really enjoyed the interaction with the student-athletes, Brewer said. On the way home, my wife Selena said she hadn t seen me that happy in a while. She suggested that college coaching might be something I should explore. Chalk one up for the wife. GOING BACK TO BLOOMINGTON Brewer agreed and planted a seed with Mayer, who also was Brewer s childhood golf instructor, to keep him in mind if he heard of any coaching opportunities. Ironically, an opening as assistant coach at Indiana arose soon thereafter and in March 2002 Brewer returned to his alma mater where he had been an All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten performer. I couldn t be more thrilled to have had Josh come back to the Hoosier family, Mayer said. BREWER AT A GLANCE PERSONAL Having been affiliated with this program for 18 years, I can honestly say that Josh was the hardest worker I have ever seen. Josh brings a level of intensity to this program that has been vital to our success. He accepts nothing less than perfection. Brewer helped the Hoosiers enjoy very solid success over the next six seasons. Indiana was represented in NCAA competi- Full Name: Joshua B. ON TO SOUTHERN CAL In 2008, Brewer ventured from his roots to become assistant coach for both the men s and women s golf teams at Southern Cal. Brewer and both golf programs thrived in Los Angeles. Over the next four seasons, Brewer help produce two PAC-10 Championships teams and golfers who won National Player of the Year, National Freshman of the Year, 12 All-America certificates, three PAC-10 Player of the Year awards and two PAC-10 Freshman of the Year accolades. In addition, USC had two Curtis Cup and two Palmer Cup team members. THE NEXT CHALLENGE On June 18, 2012, Brewer was named the head coach at the University of Georgia. My wife, Selena, and I are excited to be joining the University of Georgia family, Brewer said. I have been blessed to learn under some of the country s greatest head coaches and I look forward to using these lessons. Georgia is a program that has a rich and storied history beginning with one of women s athletics greatest visionaries and leaders, Liz Murphey. I want to help build on the tradition she started at UGA of winning championships while graduating our student-athletes. Brewer s fourth season in Athens demonstrated that he is well on his way to restoring Georgia Golf to that status as a national leader on the course. During the campaign the Bulldogs captured nine titles five team and four individual crowns. The season also resulted in an almost totally rewritten record book for the progam. Georgia shattered its previous team stroke average by more than five strokes per round, and Bailey Tardy, Jillian Hollis notched the second-, third- and fourth-best individual averages in school history, respectively, en route to earning All-America recognition. A native of Brownstown, Ind., Brewer earned two degrees from IU a bachelor s in Business Management in 1998 and a master s in Kinesiology in 2008.

16 14GEORGIA GOLF SEASON NOTEBOOK RECORD-SETTING DOGS RETURN TO SPOTLIGHT The Georgia women s golf team added a long and thorough chapter to the program s storied history during the season. The Bulldogs ranked among the nation s top-5 teams from September through May and shattered team and individuals records along the way. The Bulldogs won nine total titles during the campaign five team and four individual. That equaled the third-most in Georgia history and represented the most since earning 10 trophies en route to an NCAA runner-up finish in The five team victories matched the thirdmost in Georgia s record books, while the four individual crowns tied the program s second-most ever. The Bulldogs finished with a average, which bettered the previous school record of in by more than five strokes per round. Georgia posted par-or-better team scores in seven of its 12 tourneys. By comparison, the Bulldogs did so six times during their first 35 seasons and 413 tournaments since women s golf became an intercollegiate sport in In the process, the Bulldogs logged four of the five best team scores in school history and their lowest single round ever, a 13-under 275 on the second day of the Mason Rudolph Championship. Individually, Bailey Tardy (72.08), Jillian Hollis (72.45) and Harang Lee (72.49) produced stroke averages that rank No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, among Georgia s all-time top-10 efforts. Tardy broke the school record for best tournament score with a 12-under 204 en route to winning the Windy City Collegiate. Hollis later came within a stroke of that mark during her victory at the Mountain View Collegiate. ACCOLADES ROLL IN FOR BULLDOGS Bailey Tardy, Harang Lee and Jillian Hollis were named All-America and All-SEC for their performances during the season, while Rinko Mitsunaga was named to the SEC s All-Freshman team. Tardy was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Year, first-team All-America by both the Women s Golf Coaches Association and Golfweek, first-team All-SEC and SEC All- Freshman. She finished the year ranked among the nation s top-10 individuals by both Golfweek (No. 5) and Golfstat (No. 9). Lee was named first-team All-America by Golfweek and second-team by the WGCA. She also earned first-team All-SEC recognition and finished the year ranked No. 10 individually by Golfweek. BULLDOGS SWEEP REGIONAL TITLES Georgia surged to the lead early in the final round and maintained a comfortable edge the rest of the afternoon en route to winning the NCAA Bryan Regional at Traditions Golf Club on May 7. Bailey Tardy completed the sweep of the team and individual titles for Georgia, tying for medalist honors with UCLA s Bronte Law at 7-under 209. Georgia wrapped up play at 6-under 858, a school record for NCAA Regional and Championship competition and the fourthbest score in program history overall. After is was over, it was very fun, but the process of getting there was pretty stressful, head coach Josh Brewer said. When you sign the scorecards and they call your name as champions, you can t ask for much more. Rinko Mitsunaga played a key role in Georgia s ascent to on the team leaderboard. She fired a 4-under 68 to pace the Bulldogs to a 1-over 289 on Sunday. The victory was Georgia s first Regional title since 1999 and the first Regional individual crown since Reilley Rankin in WORST FALL SCORE A GOOD INDICATOR Georgia s worst round of the fall, at least statistically speaking, might have been its most impressive effort. The Bulldogs traveled to the Stanford Intercollegiate without Bailey Tardy, who was recovering from a concussion. Georgia was tied for fourth behind Stanford, UCLA and Southern Cal following the first 36 holes when things got worse. Jillian Hollis was forced to withdraw from the final round due to an illness, leaving the Bulldogs in a play-four, count-four scoring situation. Georgia shot 8-over 292 its worst relation-to-par score in 14 rounds during the fall but still impressed Josh Brewer. It s weird. This was our worst team finish of the fall, but it may have been our most important tournament so far, Brewer said after the final round. This week showed us a great deal about our team. I couldn t be prouder of how everyone performed in tough circumstances, first with Bailey not traveling and then having Jillian out today. BRICK NAMED GEORGIA S TOP PEACH Senior Sylvie Brick was named Peach of an Athlete by the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts at its annual Role Model Banquet. The banquet honors a professional individual, a professional athlete and 10 college athletes. Brick was the overall female Peach of an Athlete. Brick was president of UGA s studentathlete advisory committee (SAAC) for the school year and has spearheaded several initiatives by that organization. She also was the chosen to represent SEC female student-athletes in all sports at the 2015 NCAA Leadership Forum. Sylvie has used her opportunities as a UGA student-athlete to full benefit, Josh Brewer said. She embraced it and ran with it. She came here with a mission and a goal to make sure she was prepared for life after college, and she s done just that.

18 16GEORGIA GOLF GEORGIA GOLF HISTORY UGA HAS LONG BEEN AMONG NATION S BEST It all began in 1967, when Liz Murphey joined the UGA faculty as an assistant physical education professor and golf coach. She gradually built Georgia into a national powerhouse...a status the Bulldogs have maintained for decades. In the past three decades, the Bulldogs have earned four national championships one team and three individual titles. Georgia has won an SEC-best 19 team and individual league titles. On the team front, Georgia has finished among the top 20 schools at the national championships during 26 of the last 38 years 20 of those in the top 10. UGA has captured 11 SEC team crowns, including three straight from Individually, Georgia golfers have posted 36 top-20 individual finishes at nationals. Four of those came in 2001 alone, when Reilley Rankin, Laura Henderson, Angela Jerman and Summer Sirmons all did so en route to securing the team national title. The aforementioned quartet is among 31 golfers who have been named All-America 53 times. In addition, Bulldog golfers have won eight SEC individual titles, eight SEC Golfer of the Year honors and nine SEC Freshman of the Year accolades. The quintet of coaches In 1986, Beans Kelly, a member of Bulldog teams that finished fourth and third at the 1982 and 1983 national championships, respectively, took the reins from her mentor and continued to build upon the foundation Liz Murphey established. During Beans tenure from , Georgia collected seven SEC Championships, five SEC individual crowns and five top- 10 NCAA finishes. Todd McCorkle assumed the helm in 2000 and delivered the program s first-ever team national title the following spring. Kelley Hester, a three-time All-SEC performer as the former Kelley Richardson, christened the newest chapter in Georgia Golf lore in 2008 and led the Bulldogs to two more top-20s. Josh Brewer was named as the Bulldogs fifth head coach in June 2012 and immediately began to build upon UGA s rich golf legacy, capturing three individual and one team championship during his initial campaign in Athens. National titles make their way to Athens Georgia Golf owns four national championships three individual crowns and one team title. Athens native Terri Moody was the first woman ever to receive a full athletic scholarship to UGA and became the Bulldogs first national medalist. She captured the 1981 AIAW title at the UGA Golf Course after winning a three-hole playoff over Miami s Patti Rizzo. Cindy Schreyer secured Georgia s first NCAA medalist honor by winning at the Innisbrook Resort in Tarpon Springs, Fla., in She did so in much the same style as Moody, in a threehole sudden-death playoff win over SMU s Martha Foyer and Miami s Michele Berteotti. UGA GOLF S FOUNDING FEMALES Terri Moody (L) and Liz Murphey (R) take in the action at the 2000 Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Murphey started the program from scratch and was head coach from She also was the senior woman administrator while UGA developed into a national power in women s athletics. Moody, an Athens native who was the first female to receive a full athletic scholarship to UGA, paid major dividends on that investment by winning the school s first-ever national title in women s intercollegiate athletics. Perhaps no other player made the impact that Vicki Goetze did in her two-season stint at Georgia. A native of nearby Watkinsville, Goetze capped her freshman year by shooting a tourney-record 65 on the last day of the 1992 NCAA Championships in Tempe, Ariz., to win medalist honors by three over Arizona s Annika Sorenstam. In 2001, the Bulldogs captured their first team national title. Georgia rallied from a four-shot deficit entering the final round to best topranked Duke by three shots in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Premier amateurs Vicki Goetze arrived in Athens as one of the most celebrated and decorated junior golfers ever. Goetze was a six-time AJGA All-American and three-time National Junior Golfer of the Year. She won the 1989 U.S. Amateur during the summer after her sophomore year of high school and won a second Am in 1992 following her freshman campaign at UGA. The year before Terri Moody won her individual national crown, she became UGA s first representative in the Curtis Cup, the biennial competition between top amateurs from the U.S. and Great Britain & Ireland. Bulldogs have represented the U.S. six more times, as well as GB&I in International Bulldogs have claimed major amateur titles. Luciana Bemvenuti was a three-time winner of the Brazilian Amateur from Kelly Froelich captured the 2003 French Junior, Laura Henderson won the 2006 Canadian Am, Marta Silva Zamora secured the 2010 Spanish Am crown and Manuela Carbajo Ré won the 2011 South American Am and the 2009 and 2011 Argentine Amateurs. Dominating the SEC in Beans Glory Days Georgia owns an SEC-best 19 league titles 11 team and eight individual headlined by an unprecedented trio of sweeps at three straight SEC Championships between Making a mark in the professional ranks Fifteen Bulldogs have gone on to play on the LPGA Tour, with four topping $1 million in career earnings and the group winning more than $8.5 million combined. In addition, 24 Georgia golfers have competed on the Futures Tour. Nanci Bowen won the 1995 Nabisco Dinah Shore Championship, the first major by a Georgia golfer. In 1986, Cindy (Pleger) Mackey became the initial former Bulldog to secure an LPGA win, a 16-shot victory at the MasterCard International that still stands as the Tour record for largest margin of victory. Standouts in the classroom as well For all the successes Georgia has enjoyed on the course, the Bulldogs academic resume is equally impressive. The program has captured UGA s Faculty Athletic Representatives Award given annually to the women s and men s teams with the highest grade point average for the year 12 times.

26 24GEORGIA GOLF NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1981 Terri Moody moved atop the leaderboard midway through the second round of the 1981 AIAW Nationals at the UGA Golf Course and held off a late charge from Miami s Patti Rizzo to win Georgia s first-ever individual national title by a female studentathlete in any sport. Moody was among a group of five golfers tied for second following an opening-round 73, but grabbed a one-stroke lead over Rizzo with a 72 on her second loop. Moody, an Athens native who was the first female studentathlete to receive a full athletic scholarship from UGA, maintained that advantage when she and Rizzo both carded thirdround 75s. On the final day, Rizzo s 75 knotted the score and forced a three-hole playoff. Moody completed the trio of holes at 1-under while Rizzo was 1-over. CINDY SCHREYER 1984 NCAA Medalist TERRI MOODY 1981 AIAW Medalist 1984 Cindy Schreyer claimed a dramatic win at the 1984 NCAA Championships, winning a threehole playoff with SMU s Martha Foyer and Miami s Michele Bertroitti with a birdie at No. 12. Schreyer had battled Arizona State s Heather Farr through most of the tournament. Farr carded an opening-round score of 71 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Schreyer, who was among seven golfers tied for eighth after the first day, rebounded to break the course record and knot herself with Farr on the leaderboard with a second-round 70. Farr regained a one-shot lead following the third round. While Schreyer shot 76 in the final round, Foyer and Berteotti carded 75s to force the playoff. Farr slipped to fourth with a 79, two strokes off the playoff-forcing score of 297. NCAA LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONS HEATHER KUZMICH 1988 (278 Yards) TINA PATERNOSTRO 1991 (271 Yards) 1992 Vicki Goetze turned in one of the most impressive single rounds in the history of women s collegiate golf en route to capturing top individual honors at the 1992 NCAA Championships on Arizona State University s Karsten Golf Course. Goetze and Stanford s Audrey Wooding led following firstround, 3-under 69s; however, Annika Sorenstam of Arizona grabbed a three-shot advantage with a second-round 68. Sorenstam maintained that same margin after both she and Goetze shot 72s on the third day. Goetze then torched the course with a 7-under 65 on the fourth day to top Sorenstam by three. Goetze s effort still remains as both the low single-round score VICKI GOETZE 1992 NCAA Medalist in NCAA Championships history (though four other golfers have equaled the mark) and the Bulldogs low loop all time as well The 2001 Bulldogs utilized three days of consistent golf to place themselves in contention and then used a spectacular final-round effort to win UGA s first-ever national title in women s golf. Georgia shot 298 and was among three teams tied for fourth after the opening day but climbed to sole possession of third after a second-round 295. The Bulldogs improved to 293 in the third round but still trailed top-ranked Duke by four entering the final 18 holes. Georgia seized contol early in the fourth round, tying the Blue Devils by No. 5 and then surging to a three-shot lead at No. 6. Duke never got closer than two shots thereafter. Georgia clinched the title with steely resolve. After a trio of bogeys at No. 16, UGA played the par-5 No. 17 at 3-under to all but seal the national title. The Bulldogs fourth-round score of 290 was six shots better than any other team in the field, as Reilley Rankin and Summer Sirmons carded a pair of 72s, while Laura Henderson and Angela Jerman both shot 73. All four of those Bulldogs finished among the top 18 individuals, with Rankin tying for 10th at 292, Henderson and Jerman both tying for 13th at 294 and Sirmons tied for 18th at NCAA CHAMPIONS (L-R) Angela Jerman, Whitney Christie, Summer Sirmons, Reilley Rankin and Laura Henderson.
