1 10 th Grade Golf Unit Plan Day 1 Intro Activity- Four corner fitness- Students will jog around the green until the music stops and then perform the activity placed at the closest cone. Fitness- Flexibility- Stations will be set up with directions of how to perform the stretch and a description of how it will help in your golf game. (arm and shoulder stretch, elbow puller/pusher, wishbone stretch) Lesson Focus- Intro to Golf - grips - basic swing instructions - basic rules - stance Culminating Activity- Students will use various grips to practice their swings. They will be aiming for a tee placed in the ground. Students will determine the most comfortable grip for them. Rainy Day- The same lesson will work. Use carpet squares to swing on.
2 Day 2 Intro Activity- Students will practice their swings by aiming for the tee in the ground. Fitness- Flexibility- Students will go stations with a partner and do partner stretching. Stretches may include trunk twists w/medicine ball, over and under w/medicine ball, and straddle stretching w/ medicine ball. Lesson Focus- Putting - Stance - Grip - Stroke - Reading the greens (slope, break) Culminating Activity- Students will try to putt the ball into a target-like area. They will accumulate points based on how close they come to the hole. Rainy Day- The same lesson will work inside with outdoor carpeting.
3 Day 3 Intro Activity- Students will practice putting by reading the greens and making smooth strokes. Fitness- muscular strength/endurance- Students will use dynabands to perform bicep curls, tricep extensions, and cross-body punching. Lesson Focus- Putting - Determining line - Determining speed - Visualizing the path of the putt Culminating Activity- Partners will compete with another pair in a bocce ball type game. The team who putts its ball closest to the hole gets a point. Play to 20. Rainy Day- The same lesson will work indoors.
4 Day 4 Intro Activity- Students will practice their putting from various distances and angles. Fitness- Muscular Strength- Students will jog until the whistle then perform an exercise. (Squat jumps, crab kicks, leg extensions, v-sit). Lesson Focus- Chipping- -bump and run -flop shot -club selection options Culminating Activity- Students will participate in a Bozo buckets type game. Hoops will be set out at varying lengths. The students will aim for the closest one first and then proceed in order after they have successfully made the shot. Students are awarded more points for hoops farther away. Rainy Day- The same lesson will work indoors with foam/whiffle balls and outdoor carpeting.
5 Day 5 Intro Activity- Students will practice chipping by chipping into hoops at varying lengths. Fitness- Muscular strength- Students will go to stations and perform tricep dips, pushups, trunk lifts, and reclining partner pull-ups. Lesson Focus- Short irons (PW-8 iron) - Ball position - Loft - Distance and trajectory control Culminating Activity- Students will pick a card with a club number on it and try to determine how far they can hit that particular club. They will hit ten balls and be awarded one point for every ball that came within 20 yards of their guess. Rainy Day- Students can hit the foam balls into nets and work on aiming rather than distance. You can put targets at varying heights on the nets to account for the loft of the different clubs.
6 Day 6 Intro Activity- Students will practice controlling their distances with clubs 8-PW. Fitness- Flexibility- Students will stretch their backs by performing the ankle hold, body twist, sitting toe touch, and the butterfly stretch. Lesson Focus- Mid-range irons (5-7 irons) - Ball position - Controlling distance and trajectory Culminating Activity- With each club students will attempt to control their trajectory and distance by hitting balls into various grids. Rainy Day- The same lesson will work by hitting into nets using foam/whiffle balls. Put targets on the nets for students to aim at. Students will be working on accuracy rather than distance.
7 Day 7 Intro Activity- Students will practice controlling their distances/trajectories with clubs 5-7. Fitness- Muscular strength/endurance- Students will go through stations using the dynabands to perform bicep curls, shoulder press, tricep extensions, and chest press. Lesson Focus- Long irons and fairway metals (4 iron- 3 wood) - Ball position - Control distance/ trajectory Culminating Activity- Students will hit ten balls with each club and try to determine how far they consistently hit each club. After determining their distance they will then hit five balls with each club. Each time they come within 20 yards of the predicted distance they receive one point. Rainy Day- Students can practice their accuracy by aiming at targets placed on nets. Students will give themselves one point each time they hit a target.
8 Day 8 Intro Activity- Students will practice controlling their distances/trajectories with clubs 4 irons to 3 woods. Fitness- Muscular strength/endurance- Students will work on lower body strength by performing calf raises, lunges, squats, side leg lifts, and front leg lifts. Lesson Focus- Driving (3 woods and drivers) - Ball position - Tee box rules - Club selection - Height of tee Culminating activity- Students will attempt to hit 15 balls in the fairway or between two lines with a driver and 3 wood. This gives the students an opportunity to see which club they are most accurate with. Driving the ball in the fairway with a driver is worth three points and driving it in the fairway with a 3 wood is worth one point (most people are more accurate with a 3 wood). Rainy Day- The same lesson can be done indoors with foam balls and targets on a net or wall. Put a specific number of points on each target.
9 Day 9 Introductory Activity: Students will practice driving the ball off the tee making sure to work on proper grip, alignment, and stance. Fitness Activity: Heartbeat Stations Lesson Focus: Sand Shots (Bunker Shots) Blast Sand Shot Pick Clean Sand Shot Work at different distances Rule: No grounding the club Culminating Activity: Students will be able to land bunker shots within 20 ft of the hole. Groups of 2-4 students will compete to see which group can land the most shots inside 20 feet.
10 Day 10 Introductory Activity: Students will work on sand shots that were worked on the day before. Fitness Activity: Imposter or not? Lesson Focus: Hazard Shots Work on shots under, over, and around trees and other objects Shots with the ball above and below your feet Rules of hazard play Culminating Activity: Students will hit ten balls at a flag set yards away, from lies that are above and below their feet. (4 out of 10 within a 10 yard radius of the flag)
11 Day 11 (Rain Day): Can be done on any day, on or off the golf course. Introductory Activity: Work on putting from feet away making 2 out of 5. Fitness Activity: Frisbee Calorie Blaster Lesson Focus: Course Management / Rules / Etiquette Divots, ball marks, spikes Major course rules Golf Etiquette Culminating Activity: Assessment sheet on golf course management, etiquette, and rules.
12 Day 12 (Rain Day): Can be done on any day, on or off the golf course. Introductory Activity: Students will work on fixing divots on the course. Fitness Activity: Jump Bands Lesson Focus: Scoring & Types of game play How to keep score Scoring names: Par, Birdie, Bogey, Eagle, Double & Triple Bogey Types of games: Stroke Play, Match Play, Skins Game, Best Ball, Alternate Shot Culminating Activity: Students will be able to keep score of an imaginary round of golf, and give the final total that the player was over par
13 Day 13 Introductory Activity: Range Students work on 7-iron shots to prepare for assessment. Fitness Activity: Continuous Relay Lesson Focus: Range Practice Students have the opportunity to practice all shots and prepare for assessment Culminating Activity: Golf Rating Scale (Use 7-iron) Skill Assessment of the Grip, Stance, Alignment, and Swing Golf Rating Scale 1. Grip (3 points 1pt each) 4. Swing (10 points 1pt each) Correct wrap of hands One piece take away Grip tension is correct Head doesn t move up and down Hands are completely on the grip Head doesn t move back and forth Left arm extended 2. Stance (4 points 1/2pt each) A complete coil is present Club toe up to target backswing- Feet are proper width apart at parallel level Standing proper distance from ball Club accelerates through the ball Weight evenly distributed Club continues after contact Knees bent properly Facing target at the finish Proper bend from waist Arms hanging naturally 5. Performance (10 points possible) No unnecessary tension in the arms & hands 10 Good contact, good trajectory, No unnecessary tension in legs good direction 9 Good contact, good trajectory, 3. 14 Day 14 Introductory Activity: Light swings on the range with low irons or putting. Fitness Activity: Stretching and light jog to warm up the muscles and get ready to play. Lesson Focus: Course Play Students get to play 3-4 holes (as time permits) Focus on all aspects of skills, rules, and scoring that they have worked on Culminating Activity: Course Play
15 Day 15 Introductory Activity: Students will figure their score from the previous day, and report their score in the amount of strokes over par they were. Fitness Activity: Aerobic Capture (If time allows) Lesson Focus: Golf Test (Vocabulary, rules, etiquette, course management, club selection, and current players) Culminating Activity: Golf Test
