1 Poulter victory highlights shift in world order Ian Poulter s victory over Paul Casey in the WGC Accenture Match Play in the first all European final in the history of the event sealed an exceptional week for The European Tour in Arizona. Seven of the eight quarter finalists and all four semi-finalists at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club on Dove Mountain hold European Tour Membership and as the dust settled on the Sonoran Desert, the new Official World Golf Ranking further underlined the significance of what unfolded in America. The two English finalists were battling for the World Number Five position, Poulter eventually taking the honours and moving to a career high ranking with his 4 and 2 victory, while Casey edged up to sixth. Another Englishman Lee Westwood remains the leading European at World Number Four, and the trio in fourth, fifth and sixth head ten European Tour Members in the World s Top 15. It is the first time that three Englishmen have occupied positions in the top six in the world, a far cry from a decade ago when Westwood was the sole occupant in the World s top 100. Indeed, six of the World s top ten are European. Poulter moved up six places and while Casey, who moved up one spot, may have been disappointed to have lost out in the final for a second successive year, the significance of his performance should not be underestimated as it marked his return to form after months plagued by a rib injury. Poulter is only the seventh English golfer to win on US soil, and the fourth European Tour Member to lift the Walter Hagen trophy as a winner of the WGC Accenture Match Play after Northern Ireland s Darren Clarke, Australia s Geoff Ogilvy and Swede Henrik Stenson. Clarke was the first to win the title in 2000, beating Tiger Woods in the final at La Costa Resort and Spa. Ogilvy won in 2006 and 2009 while Stenson took the title in Throughout the week European Tour Members went head to head among the saguaro cacti. The consolation match for third place was a battle of Latin flair as Colombian Camilo Villegas got the better of Spain s Sergio Garcia, while England s Oliver Wilson, Thailand s Thongchai Jaidee and South African Retief Goosen all progressed through three rounds before bowing out at the quarter final stage. The Open Champion, Stewart Cink of America, was the sole non- European Tour representative in the latter stages of the tournament. For Poulter, victory was the culmination of years of hard work, completing the transformation from a four-handicapper selling chocolate bars and tees in his local pro shop when he turned professional 16 years ago. His journey took him through the Challenge Tour and four visits to 22FEBRUARY2010 The Top 15 in The 2010 Race to Dubai 1 Ian POULTER (ENG) Paul CASEY (ENG) Charl SCHWARTZEL (RSA) Camilo VILLEGAS (COL) Martin KAYMER (GER) Sergio GARCIA (ESP) Robert KARLSSON (SWE) Lee WESTWOOD (ENG) Thongchai JAIDEE (THA) Miguel Angel JIMÉNEZ (ESP) Alvaro QUIROS (ESP) Oliver WILSON (ENG) Anders HANSEN (DEN) Andrew DODT (AUS) Retief GOOSEN (RSA) the Qualifying School before he secured his European Tour card and won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year honours in Ten years on, Poulter now has nine European Tour titles and sits proudly atop The Race to Dubai Rankings with 1,186,295. He has two Ryder Cup appeaarances under his belt, emerging as the top points scorer with four points out of five at Valhalla in 2008 after being picked as a wild card by Nick Faldo, but after his performance in Arizona, which not only highlighted his match play prowess but also earned him 1,019,635 Ryder Cup points, he looks a strong contender for a place in Colin Montgomerie s European side bound for The Celtic Manor Resort in October. It s been a long time coming, said Poulter after his victory. Paul was obviously going to be a great opponent and he proved that. It was always going to be tough. I m just so happy to finally win on American soil. DRIVING ACCURACY Defined as both an average number of fairways per round and a percentage of fairways hit. DRIVING DISTANCE Defined as an average number of yards per drive. Two drives are measured per round on holes chosen to counteract the effect of gradient or wind. The drives are measured at the point they come to rest regardless of whether they are on the fairway or not. GREENS IN REGULATION Defined as both an average number of greens per round and a percentage of greens hit. A green in regulation is defined as the number of shots that a player should take to reach the putting surface on any given hole, being one for Par 3s, two for Par 4s and three for Par 5s. PUTTS PER GIR Defined as both the average number of putts taken per green in regulation and the average number of putts taken per round on greens that are hit in regulation. By doubling the greens per round figure and thereby assuming two putts on each green in regulation, we can then subtract the GIR putts per round figure from this total to infer the number of strokes under par the player will be per round from the greens hit in regulation. AVERAGE PUTTS Defined as the average number of putts taken per round. The use of the putter from off the green does not constitute a putt as far as the statistics are concerned. KEY AVE SPR - Average scrambles per round AVE Missed GPR - Average missed greens per round SCRAMBLES The frequency, expressed as a percentage to one decimal place, of the player scoring par or better on holes where the player missed the Green in Regulation.
