6 PLAYERS News and Notes Tiger Woods withdrew from THE PLAYERS Championship following his opening nine holes Thursday. He shot a 6-over 42 on the front nine at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course. Woods has a medial collateral ligament sprain in his left knee and a left-achilles tendon strain. Woods 42 is his highest ninehole score at THE PLAYERS. Of To shoot 64 Thursday, 64 first-round leader Nick Watney had an eagle and nine birdies to go with a bogey and a double bogey. His was the 15th 64 in tournament history, one stroke off THE PLAYERS record of 63 held by Fred Couples and Greg Norman. Prior to this season, Watney had played in four PLAYERS Championships, making the cut twice. His best performance was a tie for 17th last year, and his previous-low round was the thirdround 68 he shot in It had been eight years since Mark O Meara last appeared in THE PLAYERS. By virtue of his win last year at the Champions Tour s Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, the 54-year-old O Meara earned a spot in this year s field and made a successful return to TPC Sawgrass Thursday. He shot a 6-under 66 and is in third place, two strokes those who have won THE PLAYERS Championship since the event moved to TPC Sawgrass in 1982, only nine have carded a firstround score of 70 or higher and gone on to win. The most recent to do it was Stephen Ames in 2006 when he shot a 1-under 71 in the first round. behind Nick Watney. The last time O Meara, 54, a two-time Champions Tour winner, had a round in the 60s at TPC Sawgrass was in 2000 when he shot a final-round 67. His best finish in 23 previous PLAYERS starts was a third-place showing in That year, O Meara entered the final round tied for the lead with Sandy Lyle. A Sunday 73 derailed O Meara s chances, with Lyle eventually defeating Jeff Sluman in a playoff. Brian Gay recorded the 21st PLAYERS Championship eagle on the par-4 12th hole and the first since Bob Tway holed out in Gay drained his approach shot from 91 yards for his second eagle of the year. That was the good. As for the bad? Gay only needed a par on the 18th hole to shoot a 67. Instead, he made quadruple bogey on the second-toughest hole to settle for a 1-under 71. While four past champions Davis Love III (68), David Duval (70), Justin Leonard (70) and Phil Mickelson (71) were under par Thursday, six other former champions didn t fare as well at THE PLAYERS. 12 Blue Coat Memories: Robert Davis My favorite PLAYERS memory is a hard one. My father, Don Davis, is a Past Chairman (1988) and was the general manager of the Deerwood Country Club during the Greater Jacksonville Opens there. So I have been around the tournament since I moved away from Jacksonville for many years after college and was not involved in the tournament during the 1980s and early 90s. In 1993, I was able to attend THE PLAYERS on several of the days and went with my father on Sunday for the final round. We followed Nick Price as he shot a 67 to win by five shots. After the round, we went to the volunteer headquarters where the champion traditionally makes an appearance after the trophy presentation and media interviews. I vividly remember sitting with my father who passed away two years ago and hearing Nick address the volunteers, telling them how excited he was to win and how sincere he sounded as he expressed his appreciation for all of the volunteers efforts and hard work. What I also remember was that once he was done speaking, he stayed for well over an hour, ate and drank, signed anything and everything he was asked to, posed for pictures and talked to all the volunteers. That was really the moment for me when I knew I wanted and needed to get back involved with THE PLAYERS because of what it means to this community and the more than 2,000 volunteers who make it happen every year. The volunteer leadership for THE PLAYERS can be identified by their trademark blue blazers, earning them the moniker Blue Coats. In 2011, five Vice Chairs, along with Tournament Chairman Jim Fuller, lead the 2,000-plus volunteer force of the event. They are: First Vice Chairman Curtis Hazel and Vice Chairs Robert Davis, Andy Baggs, Brian Franco and Michele McManamon. Tebow s Charity Tournament a Big Hit with Fans F or four years with the Florida Gators, Tim Tebow thrilled college football fans with the exciting way he played quarterback. It was a method that eventually led to him winning the Heisman Trophy. Tebow has now put his unique stamp on something else this time his charity golf tournament, the Tim Tebow Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic that was held May 7 at Dye s Valley Course. Tebow, who finished his rookie year with the Denver Broncos in 2010, hosted the traditional 18-hole golf tournament last week. However, it was what some of the 18 holes featured Tebow s twists, as it were that set this event apart. The tournament included food stops, non-golf athletic competitions among the players and, in some instances, the opportunity for spectators to join the action. On the 10th hole, for instance, celebrity players grabbed a basketball and shot free throws. If they made the shot, they could take one stroke off their golf score. The 14th hole was timed, with awards given to the player who played it the fastest. I like to have fun out on the golf course, and the 18-hole skills challenge went a long way to keep everyone loose out there and ensured that all of us the participants and the spectators spent the day having a great time, Tebow said. An estimated 1,000 fans paid to watch Tebow, former Florida football coach Urban Meyer, Minnesota Viking All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson and Jaguars quarterback David Garrard, among other celebrities. Funds generated from the first annual tournament went to the Tim Tebow Foundation and The First Tee. 12

At UNF, all students are encouraged to take part in transformational learning opportunities. For members, that often means volunteering their time, energy and talents in ways that help others while building leaders. For other UNF students, that can mean travel abroad or working on research projects with professors even as undergraduates. Last year, UNF received the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in recognition of the school s exceptional commitment to community engagement, an honor given to institutions of higher education across the nation. A warm welcome is extended to all patrons, players, families, and staff on behalf of the UNF fraternity and sorority community. THE PLAYERS Continues Commitment to Youth T wo weeks ago, in the shadow of the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse, with more than 100 children and young adults representing local non-profits serving as a colorful back-drop, PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem announced a committed goal by THE PLAYERS Championship to generate $50 million for youth-related charities over the next 10 years. Some of the current fundraising efforts in place through THE PLAYERS will be refined as a way to bring new youth-related charities into the fold and generate additional dollars. Since 1977, when THE PLAYERS Championship moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, more than $40 million has been generated for Northeast Florida charities, including a record $4.8 million donation in MAY 13, 2011 The Players PGATOUR.COM 13
