3 O Meara Pleased with His Return at THE PLAYERS n 18 career PLAYERS Championship starts prior to this year, David Toms has exactly one top-10 finish a tie for ninth in And of those 18 starts, he s only made eight cuts. So it comes as something of a surprise that Toms finds himself in the lead at the halfway point of THE PLAYERS Championship. Toms opened the tournament with a first-round, 6-under 66, only his fifth sub-70 round at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course. He came back Friday with a 68. It seemed like early in my career around here, I was always trying to play the perfect shot, said Toms. I think the last few years I ve just learned to try to play my game. I felt good about everything I was doing, driving the ball, iron shots, putter. And I didn t want to give anything back early. His plan worked as he parred five of his first seven holes, with birdies coming on No. 5 and No. 7. His only bogeys came on No. 8 and No. 15, and he added four more birdies, with three of them coming on the back nine. I haven t done anything great, haven t made a lot of long putts or chipped in or anything like that. I ve just played very, very solid. One stroke behind Toms is Nick Watney, who made it to 9-under through No. 11 Friday and then parred his final seven holes. A quartet of players, Luke Donald, Lucas Glover, Graeme McDowell and Steve Stricker, are tied for third at 8-under, with Glover seeking his second consecutive win after capturing the Wells Fargo Championship last week in Charlotte. I haven t put myself in position going into Saturday this year, McDowell said. So I said to my caddie walking to the first tee [Thursday], I m missing being in contention. Steve Stricker -8 Fifty-four-year-old Mark O Meara may not have had very high expectations when he came into this year s PLAYERS Championship. He last appeared in the tournament in 2003 and returned to TPC Sawgrass this week by virtue of his win at the Champions Tour s Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship. After rounds of to open the tournament at 4-under, O Meara, six strokes off the lead, is right in the middle of the chase. I made a couple of mistakes out there today, but I played some pretty good shots, he said of his second round. I m proud of myself, and 4-under for two rounds, that s a good score on this golf course. Whether playing on the Champions Tour, where he is a two-time winner, or returning to the PGA TOUR, O Meara, who is playing in his 661st PGA TOUR event, has looked comfortable back on a TOUR where he last made a cut in 2009 at the British Open. There s always pressure on me whether I m playing here or in a Champions Tour event, O Meara said. It does feel really good. This is a world-class field on a world-class golf course. 6 For the second consecutive day, there was an eagle on the par-4 12th hole. Actually, there were two. In Friday s second round, Keegan Bradley holed out from the fairway from 73 yards. Later in the day, Chad Campbell made a 2 when he knocked in his approach from 91 yards, ironically the same distance from where Brian Gay made eagle the previous day. In PLAYERS history, there were only 20 eagles on that hole before the three there this week. Through 36 holes, five players played the finishing stretch of Nos. 16, 17 and 18 in nine strokes. Alvaro Quiros (below) and Bill Lunde (both in the first round) and Robert Garrigus and Derek Lamely (second round) finished with three consecutive birdies. Phil Mickelson on Friday also took nine strokes on the trio of holes making eagle at No. 16, followed by a par at No. 17 and a birdie on the closing hole. Tim Clark, who has suffered with an elbow injury for much of this season, gamely tried to defend his 2010 PLAYERS Championship title. But the pain became too intense, and the South African withdrew from the tournament during the middle of his second round. Steve Stricker s opening marks the first time in 44 career rounds that he has shot consecutive sub-70 rounds at THE PLAYERS. Before this year s PLAYERS, Stricker had shot in the 60s in just two of his previews 42 attempts. O Meara (4-under) is tied for 23rd, while Pavin (3-under) is tied for 28th and Perry (1-under) is tied for 47th. A year ago, Paul Goydos opened THE PLAYERS by shooting After 36 holes this year, Goydos, who memorably lost in a playoff to Sergio Garcia in 2008, is at 5-under 139 after opening with rounds of Goydos is hoping to improve on last year s performance. 12 Blue Coat Memories: Curtis Hazel In 2005, I was working in general parking. I remember very distinctly standing in a 10-foot-by-10-foot tent with Tom Cooper and Tommy Douglas, the 2009 PLAYERS tournament chair, who was serving as vice chair of facilities that year. It was approximately 5 a.m., and there was a thunderstorm engulfing our tent with strong winds and lightning crashing all around us. We were preparing for what was going to be a long and challenging day, and Tommy, our fearless leader, gathered us in close and said with as much conviction as he could muster, Boys, this is what it is all about. Let s go out there and have a great day! It was so comical yet exactly what we needed at that moment, and with that we fought the elements to get our volunteers parked and to their assignments on time. With more than 2,000 volunteers returning each year, I m sure there have been countless moments like this that our volunteers can share. It is a testament to the personal commitment each volunteer makes to help run this world-class event and the reason we are considered the best volunteer force on TOUR. The volunteer leadership for THE PLAYERS can be identified by their trademark blue blazers, earning them the moniker Blue Coats. In 2011, five Vice Chairs, along with Tournament Chairman Jim Fuller, lead the 2,000-plus volunteer force of the event. 13 f Graeme McDowell wasn t already at the top of the list of favorite golfers for 12-year-old Michael DeVries, he is now. The reigning U.S. Open champion surprised DeVries by inviting him to hit balls with him on the driving range part of a week-long VIP experience at THE PLAYERS Championship made possible by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. When he was five, doctors diagnosed DeVries with the rare liver disease primary sclerosing cholangitis, which usually results in the need for a transplant later in life. In DeVries case, however, the need came sooner. In 2008, the disease progressed quickly, and his mother was a transplant match, donating a portion of her liver to her son. The operation was successful, and aside from minor complications, both Mom and son are reason for medical intervention at THE PLAYERS Championship. It can be easily prevented. Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water during the day from water fountains throughout the course. and dizziness could be signs of dehydration. Be sure to drink water at least once an hour. doing fine. His wish to attend THE PLAYERS Championship was granted, but there was another well-kept secret in the Make-A-Wish experience that was yet to come. After attending McDowell s pretournament press conference in the media center, McDowell made his way to DeVries and let the cat out of the bag. How would you like to go to the range with me and hit some balls? asked McDowell. DeVries ear-to-ear smile obviously meant yes. Within minutes, McDowell had DeVries shaping shots, hitting low and high balls with more finding the target than not. This is at the top for me, said DeVries, who admits that the Make- A-Wish experience surpasses his previously best day a tour of the Chicago White Sox clubhouse and meeting major leaguer Paul Konerko. Walt Courtney Volunteer Spotlight This year, THE PLAYERS Championship volunteer Walt Courtney is celebrating 45 years volunteering at PGA TOUR events along the First Coast. He s never missed working at THE PLAYERS, and he also spent many years working at the Greater Jacksonville Open when that was a TOUR event in the area. It was shortly after he moved from Philadelphia that a close friend, who worked on the caddie committee, encouraged Courtney to volunteer. He s been hooked ever since. For 34 of Courtney s 45 years volunteering, he has had responsibility of keeping track of golf carts a position that can sometimes be challenging. Occasionally after a round, players will borrow the carts to go fishing on the course. Naturally, Courtney has to track down the carts. There is also the occasional interaction with the players. One year, Courtney was putting on the practice green located behind the volunteer headquarters when Curtis Strange approached him and admired Courtney s putter. Strange liked the club so much, he offered to buy it. You do not have enough money to afford it, Courtney said. Strange assured him that he indeed could afford it, to which Courtney replied that the putter had once belonged to his father and was therefore priceless. Enough said, Strange replied. This week, Courtney is back at TPC Sawgrass, once again offering his services. Volunteering is something that I do to support my city and all of the charities in our community. I know every day, every year I am out here, I am making a difference. THE PLAYERS Continues Commitment toyouth wo weeks ago, in the shadow of the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse, with more than 100 children and young adults representing local non-profits serving as a colorful back-drop, PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem announced a committed goal by THE PLAYERS Championship to generate $50 million for youthrelated charities over the next 10 years. Some of the current fundraising efforts in place through THE PLAYERS will be refined as a way to bring new youth-related charities into the fold and generate additional dollars.
