Canadian Junior Golf Association s TM Junior Golf News News and Views Hole in One In the DeLaet Cup Qualifier at Club de Golf Lachute, May 24, 2017, the CJGA had an other Hole-in-One. During the final round the winds picked up which created cooler temperatures for players to golf in. Romi Dilawri in the Junior Boys division had the shot of the tournament when he aced the par 3 13th during the final round on Sunday. The Bantam Boys division in Ontario has had very tight in competition over the spring tournaments. The Long brothers, Beni and Alex have had good starts to the season along with Eric Jung and Zander Gibson finishing consistently near the top of the leaderboards. CJGA Alumni Brooke Henderson was able to get her first victory of the season on the LPGA at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give on Father s day. Henderson opened the tournament with a stellar 63 and was able to close it out Sunday with a 66 to win by 2 shots over Lexi Thompson. Henderson looks to take this momentum into the Women s PGA Championship, June 29th to July 2nd, where she looks to defend her major title. Two Bantam Boys stand out as they both have three wins on the year so far. Peter Blazevic of Burlington, ON and Ethan Cardwell from Courtice, ON have both taken different routes to their dominate starts to the 2017 season. Blazevic has been a CJGA member for many years, with his winning pedigree dating back to victories on the Linkster tour. Blazevic has settled in comfortably on the Junior Tour and represented Team East at the DeLaet Cup early this June. Blazevic started off his season with a win at Bethesda Grange and followed it up with back to back victories at Station Creek then ended up on top once again at Caledon Woods. It has taken Cardwell more time adapt and adjust to the Junior tour competition but he has finally settled down and is now in a groove. Since winning his first CJGA Junior tour event earlier this spring at St. Andrew s Valley, Cardwell went on to win his next start at Glendale and then again at Cherry Downs. Both Juniors are looking to continue their good form into the summer months as both look to finish on top of the Order of Merit at the conclusion of the season. Mackenzie Hughes, another CJGA Alumni, continues good play on the PGA Tour making three of his last four cuts which includes a T16 at the Players Championship and T17 at the Travelers Championship. Hughes just missed out of qualifying for the British Open by being 21st on the Fed Ex Cup Standings while the top 20 got into the major championship. Hughes will look to continue playing well heading into the RBC Canadian Open. 4 CJGA Junior Golf News #YourFutureStartsHere

CJGA Junior Golf News Feature John Lawrence leaves his mark on the CJGA by Trevor Vander Glas

FWhen John Lawrence first started working with the CJGA, little did he know the long lasting impact that he would leave on junior golf in Canada. John began his career in the golf industry back in 2000 with the Canadian Junior Golf Association and Founder, Earl Fritz. Graduate of the Humber College Professional Golf Management program, a career in the industry was always something that John wanted to pursue because of his passion and competitiveness for the game of golf. After working with the CJGA over the last seventeen years, John is moving up in the Canadian golf rankings by accepting a role with Golf Ontario. Throughout his years at the CJGA, Lawrence has built a foundation for the association that he predicts will only continue to grow in the future, Internationally, the CJGA brand has become recognized around the world, and the brand continues to grow across Canada with the expansion of competitions and rankings. This has evolved to include international organizations awarding us exemptions into their tournaments. As Lawrence continued to grow with the CJGA so did his overall impact on the organization. The reputation that John has left on the CJGA is enormous. His dedication to junior golf and passion for the sport was displayed at every tournament across Canada and over the world. Well, I hope it s a good one, laughed Lawrence when asked about the reputation he thinks he has left with the CJGA, I would like to think that I have helped putting some structure in place when it comes to our tournament operations. Obviously a focus on the policy, procedures and rules is the foundation of the game that we play, I hope that reputation stays in hand and it s nice to see that the penalty strokes are being awarded for pace of play. Fritz also commented on the impact that Lawrence had on the CJGA, John was very important to the growth of the CJGA and junior golf in Canada and as a result of he did, we now see many John with Team Costa Rica in the CIJC

CJGA alumni on the professional tours across the world. One of John s many sayings and mottos that he brought to the CJGA was Education through competition. A motto that Lawrence explains that Our job at the CJGA is to educate juniors and get them ready for the next level. Education through competition is drilled into all CJGA staff members as they are always encouraging junior golfers to learn and grow through CJGA tournament experiences. The last tournament that John worked at with the CJGA was a Greg Norman Champions Golf Academy Series event at St. Andrews Valley in Aurora, Ontario. Lawrence followed his motto right to the very end of his career at the CJGA, as rules officials and himself handed out penalty strokes for some improper dropping procedures. These penalties may seem harsh in the moment for junior golfers but it is a teaching point for them to understand the rules of golf as they continue to develop their game and knowledge of the sport, something that John enjoys seeing as older players move onto professional golf. There is a lot of CJGA alumni out on the Mackenzie Tour right now and its always nice to reconnect with those players explained Lawrence. Most recently at the USGA US Open Canadian regional qualifier, the three golfers that were in the playoff were CJGA alumni that John watched develop over their younger years playing at CJGA events. The Canadian Junior Golf Association s slogan and hashtag for social media is #YourFutureStartsHere, another saying that John implemented on the association when he first started out with the CJGA, It s a saying that we wanted to let juniors know that if you wanted a career in golf in terms of playing career your future starts with us. Not only does #YourFutureStartsHere apply to the CJGA members but it also applies to all of the young staff members that spend countless hours preparing, travelling and organizing CJGA tournaments from coast to coast. This mindset goes into our employees as well, we have a lot of young staff every year and we want them to get better which comes down to us wanting them to have ownership in the events and giving them responsibility. We all know that they are quite talented and we like to use that talent to help build themselves and the CJGA, explained Lawrence. John forgot to mention how the slogan reflects on himself and his career. John s future started with the CJGA, he has grown with the CJGA just as the juniors have grown and developed. Moving onto the next chapters of his career, John, along with everyone that truly knows him will understand that John s future started here at the CJGA. Brad Mellon, National Championship Tournament Director with the CJGA was lucky to learn a lot from John over the last summer and a half, I felt that after my training with John, I am prepared to have the right foot forward leading into tournaments and I have the confidence that will help me in the future with directing our two national championships. John has left me with the opportunity and knowledge to run our national championships with the same level of competition that we have had for the last seventeen years he has been here. John has left a positive impression not only on the junior members but also the CJGA staff members. Not only will the CJGA, its members and staff be missing Lawrence s presence in the office and on the golf course but John will miss working at the CJGA along with interacting with junior golfers and their families. Lawrence noted that one of his favourite things about working for the CJGA was, Seeing and connecting with people from across the country, it was always nice visiting and travelling to tournaments in the different provinces and getting a true sense of what being Canadian is. John s humour, energy and work ethic will be missed at the CJGA, three characteristics that were a staple in the office or out on the golf course. Fritz, who hired John back in 2000 commented saying, Were going to really miss him, John was a important part of the CJGA, it s going to take some time to recoup from him moving on, but we wish him all the best of luck and success in the future. Despite leaving the CJGA for an opportunity at Golf Ontario, Lawrence has great optimism that the CJGA will only continue to grow and dominate junior golf in Canada. I think that it s going to continue it s great success, I see the tournaments growing and getting stronger and stronger as the brand continues to grow. I think you'll see a lot of growth once more players, like Mackenzie Hughes who is a past CJGA alumni, on the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour and the CJGA having a direct result of that. Look at Brooke Henderson who 10 CJGA Junior Golf News #Your Future Starts Here

won a CJGA National Championship only six years ago and now she is a multiple winner on the LPGA Tour, says Lawrence. Starting a new chapter in a career is sometimes tough and stressful. John is ready to accept the challenge as he moves on to the next stage of his career, Im really looking forward to the elite championships, the amateur tournaments and all the top provincial championships in the country. Working with a provincial sports association such as Golf Ontario, which is one of the stronger ones in the sport, it s definitely exciting explained Lawrence when asked about what he is looking forward to with his new role. Lawrence was asked if he ever imagined the day that he would leave the CJGA and his response was, Not really, it s been a great journey for sure, but also an extensive one. Getting to know the greater picture of golf in Canada, Im happy that I've been here for the last seventeen years. Over his seventeen year stint with the CJGA, John had gather many memories that he will remember for the rest of his life. Some of the most memorable moments include, All of the international trips I've had very fond memories of such as the South Africa, China, Scotland, and Holland events. I still connect to the days when I was running tournaments in Lake Placid when we had the New York division going. My first out of province tournament was in North Battleford, Saskatchewan which is definitely a fond memory. Lawrence competed on multiple events on the CJGA when he was a junior golfer. He remember his first CJGA event when he was introduced to Earl and his wife. John s junior golf career on the CJGA did not end up as well as his professional career with the association but his future in the golf industry all started with the Canadian Junior Golf Association. Lawrence s reputation that he left on the CJGA will be a forever lasting impression as his name will be added to the growing list of staff and junior members in which their successful futures started here. Everyone at the Canadian Junior Golf Association along with its members wish John the best in his future with Golf Ontario. FORE! n John when he first started with the CJGA presenting an award

CJGA Junior Golf News Feature Special Olympic athletes experience David Hearn Junior Series presented by Kia by Brent Long

For the first time in the history of the Canadian Junior Golf Association, Special Olympic golfers teed it up along side junior golfers in May as part of the David Hearn Junior Series presented by Kia. The two-day event at ClubLink s scenic Glendale Golf and Country Club was a huge hit on both sides of the coin and one worth repeating. The juniors were really impressive to watch the way they played the course and how they handled themselves, says Tess Trojan, who has been playing Special Olympic golf for about 10 years. There were a few challenges that the Special Olympic athletes had to overcome, like not having a caddie to rely upon and having to walk the entire 18-hole course, but there were no complaints. (Usually they have a caddie and Special Olympic competitive golf in Canada is nine holes walking). My dad usually caddies for me and helps with everything from my putting alignment and club selection to keeping track of my score and lots of other little stuff, but I think I managed pretty well. I was certainly more comfortable for the second round and it started to show in the score, the 28-year-old said, noting it was her first competitive round of the spring. The course was wet and the rough was long, but that s just golf. It was just great being out there. I was probably more anxious out there watching Tess than she was playing. You want her to play well and have a good experience, so you worry about all the little things for her, says her father Mike, who followed the group and silently counted each of her strokes in the back of his mind. I think it was really good practice for them. KIA is a great sponsor for Special Olympic athletes. Tess said the additional competition is terrific as she prepares for the Special Olympic Provincial Championship s at Caledon Country Club in July. At the last provincial games in 2013 she finished second in her division, so there is only one more spot to move up! KIA Canada signed on as the Special Olympics automotive partner earlier this year pledging $500,000 a year in both cash and vehicle leases for three years. The South Korean car manufacturer is also a sponsor of PGA Tour golfer David Hearn, who has developed the David Hearn Kia Series & Championship in conjunction with the CJGA, so working together appears to be a natural fit. Tess also had the pleasure of meeting Hearn earlier this year when she attended the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, South Carolina. I haven t had the opportunity to meet a Special Olympic athlete before so that was new for me, says 14-year-old Mackenzie Morrison, who played along side Tess for the two rounds. The change of pace certainly didn t hurt Morrison s game as she went on to win the U-19 division with rounds of 89-85, while Tess shot We both played really well and I enjoyed meeting Tess. She seemed like she was on top of everything and enjoying the competition, says Mackenzie who now advances to the David Hearn Kia Championship in September in St. Catharines because of the victory. I think if we did more of this it would be good for the Special Olympic athletes because the more opportunities you have to compete, you ll continue to improve. Brad Parkins, Chief Operations Officer of the CJGA, watched with great interest as Special Olympic and CJGA mixed with each other for the very first time at Glendale G&CC. It was a great venture to include the Special Olympic athletes into the CJGA David Hearn Junior Series, presented by KIA, Parkins says. We couldn t be happier to share in Special Olympics message of inclusion and acceptance. Giving our CJGA members the opportunity to play alongside the Special Olympic athletes was a great opportunity for the juniors to be exposed to these athletes and to see first hand the talent they have. Golf happens to be the fastest growing sport in the Special Olympic movement for athletes with an intellectual disability. In 2011 there were 446 athletes registered in the Special Olympic golf program and in 2017 there are 1,900 registered and that doesn t include all the coaches and other volunteers who make the program a success. More than 42,000 athletes are registered in Special Olympic programs across Canada, supported by more than 20,500 volunteers. I would like to see the program expand, Parkins says. That will be something we will work with the Special Olympics and KIA, as it would be great to include a group of the athletes in CJGA events across the country. n #Your Future Starts Here CJGA Junior Golf News 13

CJGA Junior Golf News Feature Former CJGA star Monet Chun picks up two key victories to start 2017 season by Brent Long

E ver since she first started hitting golf balls in the Markham Golf Dome, Monet Chun has been dreaming of playing professional golf on the LPGA Tour when the time is right. That was 11 years ago when her parents would take her to the dome to hit balls, chip and putt and today the 16-year-old, who hails from Richmond Hill, is among three rookies new to the Golf Canada National Development Squad for It s amazing how time flies in such a short time. A little one, who showed a passion and determination to learn to play golf, is now among the elite in Canadian junior golf circles. Those early lessons at the Markham Golf Dome are paying off. So is the time she spent teeing it up with the Canadian Junior Golf Association. Monet, who is a member at both the Summit G&CC and ClubLink s Station Creek GC, first teed it up with the CJGA at the age of seven. With the CJGA I started to learn how to play competitive golf and it s where I really figured out that I wanted to make a career of playing golf, says Chun who tends to shy away from team sports. It s also where I made a lot of terrific friendships with girls like; Chloe Currie, Isabella Portokalis and Alyssa DiMarcantonio, who I still compete against today. Chun won her first CJGA tournament in 2011 and a total of five including; a US Kids World Championship East Qualifier, a Jr. Linkster Series event at Highland Gate, the CJGA Junior Worlds Qualifier (Ages 10 & Under), a Junior Linkster Tour Championship, (MISSING ONE EVENT) while never finishing out of the top three in any event she played in. The CJGA gives you a great introduction into the highs and lows of playing competitive golf and certainly helped prepare me to take my game to the next level each year. You learn about the rules and how to handle yourself in many different situations out on the golf course, she says. I love that competitive atmosphere and that s what the CJGA #Your Future Starts Here gives you - a very well-run tournament and a chance to challenge yourself on every shot. Monet played with the CJGA over a four-year period from seven to 10 years of age and at the age of 11 moved up to being a member of Golf Ontario s Team Ontario with more of a focus on provincial and national championships. She spent four years on Team Ontario from 2013 through 2016 and has since moved up to Golf Canada s development squad all part of a natural progression for athletes who continue to strive for excellence. At the age of 14, Monet won her first provincial championship, the 2015 Golf Ontario s Junior Girls Match Play Championship, after numerous runner-ups in both the Investors Group Junior Spring Classic and Investors Group Junior Girls Championship. She collected a lengthy list of memorable performances in 2016, highlighted by a win at the CN Future Links Quebec Championship and a T2 finish at the Ontario Women s Amateur. Earlier this spring the Grade 10 student won the Investors Group Junior Girls Spring Classic, at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, in Stouffville, with an 11-stroke victory. She also won the Future Links, driven by Acura Ontario Championship hosted by the Brockville Country Club in Brockville. For the rest of the summer Monet s schedule is fully booked with golf leaving little time for anything else. One of the highlights may be attending her first US Women s Open qualifier. She is also checking out some of the universities she might want to attend in the US on a golf scholarship. It is truly amazing how time flies... and where Monet finishes up is anyone s best guess, but it will probably be on top! I haven t met Brooke Henderson yet, but I have been looking up to her for the last few years. She s doing what I dream of every day, she says. Let s hope that her dreams come true.. n CJGA Junior Golf News 17

CJGA Junior Golf News Feature Leo Christou s passion for golf leads him on exciting journey by Brent Long courtesy of Golf Canada

Ever since Leo Christou s grandfather handed the youngster his first set of golf clubs at 18 months of age, this little tyke has rarely put them down. That first set of plastic clubs is long gone, so is the second set of plastic clubs and the third, there may have been a fourth set in there, but dad stopped counting. However, the memories of hitting rubber balls around the living room of the family s Montreal home and backyard that his grandmother would chase after, still bring smiles to his face when the stories are told. While his favourite hockey player is PK Subban and his favourite golfer is Rory McIlroy, the seven-year-old, Grade One student is enjoying his fourth season of teeing it up with the Canadian Junior Golf Association. You can watch YouTube video footage of Leo teeing it up in his very first CJGA Junior Linkster tournament at Islesmere GC on June 21st, 2014 at the age of four competing in the U-9 division. It s a very cool look at the world of CJGA golf as Leo shot; in that first nine-hole round for a score of 73. I just remember running from hole to hole and trying to hit the ball as far as I could. I had a hard time judging my putting, but it was a fun day, Leo says during a morning telephone interview from his father s car on the way to school. What s perhaps more astonishing, is that Leo went back to the same course two years later, and as a 6-year-old shot; for a 44. He carded the very first birdie of his career and there s video of that too! After playing in nine CJGA events in 2016 including a couple of wins, Leo continues to show improve and passion for the game, but is looking forward to moving up to 18-hole competition in the not so distant future. Next year will be my last year to play the U-9 Division and in 2019 I can move up to 18 holes, he says with excitement tingling in his voice. Competing in the U-9 division this spring at FCG Callaway World Championship Qualifier at Kanata G&CC Leo picked up his first victory of the season in a playoff after both he and James Nault shot 51 in regulation over nine holes. The duo battled it out at The IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championship qualifier at Lachute GC with Nault winning top prize and Leo taking silver, while at the US Kids Golf World Golf Championship qualifier at Val des Lacs GC another friend, Landon Van Loon won and Leo settled for third. It s fun, he says when asked why he likes the game and why he s willing to put in so much time practicing and playing and that s a pretty good explanation for a seven-year-old who drives the ball 130 yards regularly. As of this spring, Leo is the youngest member at Royal Montreal Golf Club. His grandfather, Nicolas Christou, spent a year petitioning the club so his grandson would be able to play golf with him and the club saw the virtue in the request earlier this year and approved the change to allow six-year-olds to be junior members. He even has his name on the outside of the locker that he shares with his grandfather... how cools it that! He s going to spend two weeks at golf camp at Royal Montreal this summer for the first... so that should be extra special! My dad s very passionate about golf, and very supportive of Leo s golf game, Leo s father, John says. They have a special bond forged by the game, and I m thankful they can share that. It s special and I hope they both cherish their time playing together. Leo also has a five-year-old brother, Felix who enjoys going to the range and hitting a few balls, but doesn t share Leo s passion for the game at this point. While grandpa is an obsessed golfer who lives on a golf course in Florida, Leo s father, John is a recreational golfer, but it also learning the ropes as a caddy for Leo in CJGA events. When we play golf together I need to help my dad go in the woods and look for his ball, Leo says with a laugh. When we play nine holes, he beats me handily, dad adds. Being his caddie is tough! I learned early on not to interfere except to help him slow down, concentrate and stay positive. He s very hard on himself, and when he has a bad shot he gets upset and it can throw off the rest of his game, so I concentrate on being positive, John says. I try not to put any pressure on him, he already puts enough pressure on himself. I ve also learned to let him choose his own clubs. He usually knows better than me, and if does make a mistake he learns from it. Isn t that the best way to learn? He doesn t learn anything if I choose his clubs, tell him where to aim, etc. I offer advice, but he makes the decisions. #Your Future Starts Here CJGA Junior Golf News 21

Leo even has a hole in one playing with his grandfather last year at St. Donat Golf Club outside of Montreal. He teed it up from the junior tees from about 65 yards out and aced the hole for a shot of a lifetime. Leo 18 months With that kind of luck and lots of family support, we can expect to hear more big things from Royal Montreal s youngest member in the years to come! Felix loves sports as well, but he is not as competitive as Leo. He likes golf, but he s not driven to practice, compete and be the best. n Leo First Tournament Leo 2016 at Islemere with his best tournament score to date. 22 CJGA Junior Golf News #Your Future Starts Here

CJGA Junior Golf News Feature The Stahl brothers starting to make a name for themselves with the CJGA by Brent Long

O n and off the course, it s always a battle for Peyton and Bradin Stahl, but at the end of the day brotherly love always wins out in this family game. How else would you expect life to be with two boys who are always trying to one up each other? Bradin is 12 years old and Peyton is two years younger. They re members at different golf courses near their home in Priddis, AB. They have different golf coaches. They compete in different divisions, but they do love competitive golf and the Canadian Junior Golf Association events. They are way too competitive with each other to have the same coach, so we decided to separate them and give them their own space to learn. They both have very different swings and approaches to the game, says Moses, who is their father. Peyton and I are very competitive with each other. Sometimes we fight, but we make up right after, Bradin chips in. It s always a battle on the golf course. Both boys grew up with plastic golf clubs in their hands and have never really let go. They have a practice hitting range set up in the garage and there always seem to be a line-up to see who is next to hit. At the age of five, Bradin graduated to junior clubs and by the time he was seven, started taking lessons at the Golf Canada Calgary Centre in coach Jamie Reimer s Strive for Excellence program. By the time he was 10, Bradin was ready to tee it up in his first CJGA at River Spirit GC. After years of anticipation he was so nervous that he barfed moments before his tee time, but still managed to go out and play his round. The good news is that he still gets nervous before most competitions, but he hasn t thrown up since day one! Bradin is one of the youngest players who joined my Strive for Excellence program three years ago, says coach Reimer, who is the CJGA s Provincial Tournament Director for Alberta. He has a big personality and loves mixing it up with playing competitors and other strive members. Always has a lot of jokes and cares about how others are doing. He is one of my favorite players to teach because I know he tries to learn everything he can when he is in a lesson. That being said, Bradin, is one of the hardest working players in Strive, his brother Peyton, being so talented, really pushes him. Since that first tournament, Bradin, who is now a member at Priddis Greens GC, has played in about 45 competitive events - about half of those would be through the CJGA. He s really come into form this year with his first CJGA victory and a hunger for more. Bradin won the FCG Callaway World Championship Qualifier at Country Side Golf Course in Sherwood Park, AB in May. He finished second at the IMG Academy Junior World Championships Qualifier with a 71, one shot behind Jace Shannon in May at Shaganappi Point GC in Calgary and won the US Kids Golf World Championship Qualifier at Fox Hollow GC in Calgary in June. It felt awesome to get that first win out of the way at the Callaway World Championship Qualifier, so I can focus on the more finer details of my game Bradin says. It was extra special because both my brother and I won. #Your Future Starts Here Last summer, thanks to a promotion with the CJGA, Bradin enjoyed the thrill of playing a pro-am hole with LPGA Tour player, Mirim Lee of South Korea during the CP Canadian Women s Open on his home course at Priddis Greens. She hit the tee shot on the par-three and Bradin finished off the hole with a chip and a putt. On the other side of the coin, 10-year-old Peyton, who started golfing at the age of three, is also putting together some impressive results. He has the early season lead in victories with two after wins at the CJGA Alberta Linkster Series at Henderson Lake and a win, just like his older brother, at the FCG Callaway World Championship Qualifier at Country Side Golf Course in Sherwood Park, AB. Peyton placed second at both the IMG Academy Junior World Championships Qualifier at Shaganappi Point GC in Calgary and the US Kids Golf World Championship Qualifier at Fox Hollow GC in Calgary. It s a hard game to learn and play well, but I have been practicing lots and it just makes me happy when I play golf, whether I win or finish outside the top-three, says Peyton, who is a member at Mackenzie Meadows GC and had been training with coach Al Robinson since the age of six. I really like playing golf with my whole family. It s usually me and my dad against my brother and mom and we have lots of fun. Moses notes that if they put the boys on the same team, the parents would probably lose! One of the most interesting things to me is the way Peyton has matured by playing in CJGA tournaments. At the start, he was extremely shy and had a hard time talking to people he didn t know, but over the last few months he s come out of his shell and is a brand-new kid. He s very focused on the golf course, but loves chatting about golf with the other kids, Moses adds. It has been amazing to watch their passion for the game grow over the last few years. They are either at the range or on the golf course pretty much every day and we never have to coax them to go, Moses says. Later this summer, they will both participate in the IMG Junior World Championships in San Diego, California and US kids World Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Bradin made his international debut last year when he teed it up in the IMG World Junior Championships and Peyton watched from the sidelines. While Bradin didn t throw up last year, nerves got the better of him in the opening round, so he s looking for redemption. I learned that I need to do a better job of controlling my nerves, because there are a lot of competitors that I want to beat out there in the future. I m going to be better prepared this year and more relaxed, Bradin says. Peyton can t wait to tee it up in his first international event to see where he stacks up. When they re not competing, they ll gladly be cheering for the other Stahl brother. In the fall, they have both signed up for hockey for the first time and that on-ice adventure will begin. n CJGA Junior Golf News 27

CJGA Junior Golf News Feature Kaitlyn Anderson enjoying the rollercoaster ride of transitioning to 18-hole competition by Brent Long

W hile it wasn t quite a hole in one, Kaitlyn Anderson s first-ever eagle is a shot she ll likely never forget. It s a story the 10-year-old from Maple Ridge, BC will probably tell her children many years from now. Not just because she hit driver, seven-iron and then chipped in the hole from 40 yards out. Nor because it was on No. 18 at Riverway GC in Burnaby in the CJGA BC Linkster Series, but because it proves that almost anything is possible when it comes to golf and you should never give up! Heading into the final hole of the day, Kaitlyn was trailing rival Claudia Zhang of West Vancouver by a single stroke, and in a moment s notice, with the brilliance of a single stroke, Anderson experienced what most of us only dream about. She posted an 85, while Claudia finished at 86. I couldn t believe it when the ball went in the hole. I was completely shocked, but it was thrilling to win it that way, says Anderson, who competed in the Atom U-11 division and is in her first season of playing 18-hole competition. It was her second consecutive win of the season, having won the FCG Callaway World Championship Qualifier a week earlier on May 6th at Ledgeview G&CC in Abbostford. Kaitlyn shot a career best 84, while second finished second with a 90. My first win in Abbotsford was amazing. I played a solid round on a really tough golf course and posted a great score to earn a spot at the Callaway World Championship in July, which I m really looking forward to, Kaitlyn says. She gave up horseback riding at the age of eight to start golfing after her father Andrew invited her to go to the driving range with him one day to hit a few balls and have some fun. She took a few swings with his clubs, tried putting - like it and before too long, dad, a weekend golfer, bought Kaitlyn her first set of junior clubs. I miss the horses occasionally, but I really, really love golf, says Kaitlyn, who enjoys basketball, volleyball and track and field at Kanaka Creek Elementary School and plays on a club basketball team. She was also nominated earlier this year for a Future Leader of Tomorrow award at her school based on academics, sports, art and community involvement. My goal this summer is to shoot in the 70s for the first time. Kaitlyn, who has an indoor practice area in her garage at home for chipping and putting, also has a couple of third place finishes this season at CJGA events at the IMG Academy Junior World Championship Qualifier at Royalwood GC in Chilliwack with a 92 and in the US Kids Golf World Golf Championship Qualifier at Chilliwack GC with an 89. Luna Lu of Burnaby and Zhang finished one-two in both events, so there s lots of friendly competition within this group. Not that the Meadow Gardens GC member is wishing summer away, but Kaitlyn is already planning into the fall. She came up with the idea of hosting a golf tournament to raise funds for the BC Children s Hospital Foundation. I had a time in my life when I had severe migraine headaches and they have helped me to get through that, so I thought I would help the hospital so it can continue to help other children, she says. She s talked to staff at a couple of local golf courses and is hoping to work out the details in the coming weeks. If Kaitlyn could choose, she would go out and practice or play golf every single day, but we try to give her some balance in her life, her mother, Khara says. Kaitlyn, who has power with drives that travel upwards of 200 yards and beyond down the middle of the fairway, also tells another wonderful story about her favourite LPGA Tour player who she has seen in action a couple of times at the 2015 CP Women s Open at the Vancouver GC and last year at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club. I followed Brooke (Henderson) the whole day, hole-to-hole and watched every shot. It was amazing to watch her play in person, says Kaitlyn, who wore a Ping hat and sweater that matched Henderson s look. After the round, I went back to the practice area to watch her hit balls. She saw me standing there and she came over to say hi. We took some photos and later that day she tweeted out, Thanks Kaitlyn for being my twin today. That was incredible and very sweet of Brooke to do. Henderson, who also played several years with the CJGA, went on to win her first major championship and the second victory of her career on the LPGA Tour that week in a playoff with Lydia Ko. With a schedule that includes four or five more CJGA events, Kaitlyn will be looking to turn it up a notch or two in the coming weeks and months. We really try to support the CJGA and Tournament Director, Brad Ewart. He s so supportive of all the players and has an wonderful passion for junior golf. They are really well-run and organized events, Khara adds. It s exciting to be hitting the ball that far and just watching go through the air, Kaitlyn says. It feels like you re accomplishing your goal when you re hitting your driver well and putting yourself in a good spot to score. n #Your Future Starts Here CJGA Junior Golf News 31

What to Know: Match Play Barry Rhodes Barry is the author of 999 Updated Questions on the Rules of Golf , the easiest and most enjoyable way to absorb and understand the Rules. He is an enthusiastic, high handicap golfer, resident in Dublin, Ireland, who developed an interest, then a fascination, and now an obsession with the Rules of Golf. Barry s relationship with the Rules began in 2000 with his participation in the inter-club Rules of Golf quiz competitions, organised by the Royal & Ancient for Golf Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland. This then led to him writing articles, running quizzes, and delivering presentations on the Rules at a variety of Golf Club and corporate functions. In March 2008, Barry became the first person to achieve a 100% correct mark on the public Advanced Rules of Golf Course examination, run by the PGA in their headquarters at The Belfry, West Midlands, UK.

I regularly receive requests for rulings relating to match play situations after a player has lost a hole, or the match, due to a Rules incident that they were not sure about. Most golfers play far more rounds of stroke play golf than match play golf and do not realise that there are several important differences in the Rules of these formats. Below are my 12 tips that every player should understand and remember before commencing a match. 1. You may practice on the course on the day of a match (Rule 7-1). 2. You must not touch your opponent s ball in play, unless you are helping to search for it (Rule 18-3). Do not mark an opponent s ball on the putting green, unless they ask you to. 3. A concession of a hole may be given at any time and cannot be declined or withdrawn (Rule 2-4). You may putt out after receiving the concession, providing the action is not of assistance to your partner in in a four-ball or best-ball match. 4. Incorrect information (Rule 9-2). If you give your opponent wrong information about your score you must correct it before they make their next stroke, or you lose the hole. Similarly, if they give you wrong information. 5. Order of Play (Rule 10-1). If your opponent plays out of turn you may let their stroke stand, or require that they cancel the stroke and play again in the correct order. In four-ball match play, balls belonging to the same side may be played in the order that the side considers best. 6. After a stroke your ball hits your opponent, or their equipment (Rule 19-3). You may choose to replay the stroke, or accept it and play your next shot from where the ball had come to rest. 7. Putt from the putting green hits a ball at rest on the putting green (Rule 19-5). There is no penalty in match play, the other ball must be replaced and your ball played from where it comes to rest. 8. Four-ball match play representation of side (Rule 30-3a). One partner may play for any part, or all of a match, but if and when their partner arrives they must wait until the start of the next hole to join the match. 12. If you are unsure of a Rule or procedure try and resolve it with your opponent immediately (Rule 2-5). But if you cannot agree, a claim has to be made before teeing-off at the next hole. You must notify your opponent that you are making a claim, agree the facts and ask the Committee for a ruling. This last point is important. I receive several communications where a player was bullied into accepting a ruling by their opponent, which was subsequently found to be incorrect - too late to affect the result. Opponents should not to get into an argument on the course, but should agree on the facts of the situation and seek an authoritative ruling from a Committee member, or someone else whose knowledge of the Rules can be trusted. If a timely official ruling is not received, the match should be continued and played to a conclusion whereby there is a definitive result, depending on whether the eventual ruling for the disputed hole was won by either side, or was halved. Good golfing, 'Rhodes Rules School - How Many Strokes' Question: Tara and her fellow competitor, Hazel, both slice their drives into the same water hazard. Tara retrieves both balls, gives one to Hazel, drops the other ball in accordance with the relief options in Rule 26-1, and plays it onto the fairway. As she is about to pitch to the green Tara notices that the ball that she is addressing is not hers and realises that she must have mixed up the two balls when retrieving them from the hazard and has played Hazel's ball. Both players mark their balls and exchange them again. Tara replaces her original ball at the marker and takes three more strokes to finish the hole. What is Tara's score for the hole? (The answer is below) 9. Four-ball match play wrong ball (Rule 30-3c). If a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball their partner may continue play of the hole without penalty. If it was the partner's ball that was played they must place a ball where it was wrongly played from. 10. Asking for and giving advice (Rule 8-1). If a third party gives unsolicited advice no penalty is incurred, but you must request that they do not do so again. You may not give advice to any team member other than your partner. 11. Ignoring an opponent s breach of Rule (Rule 1-3). In match play, you do not have to call a penalty on your opponent if you witness a breach of Rule by them. But don t discuss the breach with the opponent before teeing off at the next hole, or you could both be disqualified for agreeing to waive a Rule. #Your Future Starts Here CJGA Junior Golf News 33

CJGA Junior Golf News Feature In the moment by Michael White

AIf you re not playing golf in the moment you re not playing to the best of your ability! Often we hear of controlling each shot as it happens and that s great advice, if you can actually do it. Unfortunately, the doing it part is one of the most difficult elements of the game and of life for that matter. You see, since we were young, we ve adopted a philosophy of focusing on results, on the score we are trying to post or the outcome we are looking to achieve. Ultimately, we have been conditioned to focus on the future. Problem is, the future really doesn t even exist. Think about this fact for a minute, every moment we are in is the present moment (or the now). Yesterday is a past now and tomorrow is a future now. All still now s. And what can we control? The present now! When we observe this fact and truly begin to understand it, we can begin to let go of any results oriented thinking and focus truly on the task at hand, and in golf, that s the shot you re about to hit. By being completely present in the now, you block out any previous failures (the last bad shot you hit or the double bogey you made on last hole ) as well as any result like thinking (like hoping I make birdie, or I have to make up 2 strokes ) and find yourself consumed in the current moment, laser focused and far better positioned to hit a great shot. It s a skill that is learn-able but takes practice (just like your swing). Once learned however, it will take more strokes off your game than any new club or swing change ever will. It s called Mental Fitness and is the game changer between playing good golf and playing great golf. Stay in the now and Get Your Head In The Game. n Michael White MFT mike@to-coach.com #Your Future Starts Here CJGA Junior Golf News 61

CJGA Junior Golf News Feature A new mantra: I slightly don t care. By Tim O Connor

I didn t have the luxury of easing into my new role with the University of Guelph golf team. My first tournament as head coach was the Canadian University/College Championship two weeks ago. Our five-member men s team had a nice mix of veterans and young players, but only two had played in the national championship before. (Our women s team didn t qualify this year.) I was looking for a way to help them cope with the nerves and have a little fun. So I borrowed a page from American snowboarder Shaun White and came up with a team mantra. Before each of the four rounds, we gathered in a circle, piled our hands on top of each other s and intoned in unison. I slightly don t care. We laughed each time. But there was a serious message: give it your best, pay attention to process, but don t fuss when bad breaks and poor shots inevitably happen. Our mantra was a like a Zen koan. Of course, they all freaking cared. They wouldn t be scratch players in a national championship if they didn t. But when you care too much, that s when golf can become excruciatingly difficult and frustrating. If you re fixated with results whether it s winning a tournament, making a sale, doing well on an exam, etc. you tend to be emotionally volatile, anxious and tense, all of which sabotage performance. When we are emotionally invested, it s hard to stay cool and roll with things. We tend to judge ourselves harshly and ruminate about our poor performance. Saying I slightly don t care is another way of saying I m resilient, which is the ability to recover. For some, this comes somewhat naturally, but for many, it s a skill that requires developing. One of my favourite stories to illustrate this involves Brad Faxon, one of the best putters on the PGA Tour in the 80s and 90s. The story goes that Faxon was on a practice green at a tournament, whacking balls all over the place. Asked what he was doing, Faxon said: I m practicing not caring. Faxon is no different than every golfer. He wants putts to drop but he s most effective when he plays as if we could care less. That s when effortless performance happens. The late Ben Kern, a former PGA Tour player and Canadian teaching legend, was a great putter. He said, Once the ball leaves the putter face, it s up to the gods and gravity. Shaun White raised the bar in snowboarding when he performed the first ever Double McTwist 1260 in the 2010 Olympics and won gold. It was an incredibly difficult maneuver: two inverted head-over-heels flips while spinning three-and-ahalf times about 50 feet in the air. Click here to watch it. Asked what he was thinking in that moment, White said: At that point, you re really not thinking. You re just letting it happen. It s a mixture of being completely focused, then slightly not caring. That's one of the best descriptions of what athletes call the zone that I've ever read. The guys on our Gryphons golf team enjoyed our mantra, and we repeated it to each other at Tangle Creek in Barrie, which sported tall fescue rough and was buffetted by high winds. After a tough start, the guys played well to make the Top 10 cut after the third round. They ultimately finished ninth, which everyone was pleased about. I am very proud of them. Four of the five players are returning next year, so we have a lot of good things to build on. Now we re thinking of getting T-shirts made for the team. Their message? I slightly don t care. n Tim O Connor is a Mental Performance Coach at the ClubLink Academy at Glen Abbey Golf Club, and Head Coach of the University of Guelph varsity golf team. 64 CJGA Junior Golf News Feature Selena Costabile, CJGA Alumnus, honing her skills in Professional Golf by Brent Long

O ne of The Thornhill Club s newest members is waiting to hear if she ll be playing in next month s 2017 U.S. Women's Open Golf Championship at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminister, NJ. Selena Costabile, who joined The Thornhill Club in May, played in her first US Women s Open Golf Championship qualifier earlier this month at Butler Country Club in Butler, PA and came within a hair of qualifying right through. Selena finished the 36-hole marathon in a tie for third place and in a playoff to determine the first alternate position the 19-year-old came through with a par on the first playoff hole to earn the alternate spot. There were a total of 21 sectional qualifiers and all of them have alternates, so now it s a waiting game to see if a spot opens up for the championship that will be played starting July 13th. It was an exhausting day, the longest day of competitive golf I have ever played, so while it was disappointing not to get one of the toptwo spots, I m glad I won the playoff, says Selena who started hitting golf balls with her mother at the age of five and played in her first tournament, a CJGA Junior Linkster event in 2011 at the age of 13. Shortly after the qualifier, Selena made the decision to forego college golf and declared her intention to play professional golf with the goal of playing on the LPGA Tour. Earlier this year Selena did something special winning a professional event on the National Women s Golf Association tour at the Dubsdread Golf Course in Orlando, Florida. She topped a field of professionals and talented amateurs with scores of 65, 69, and 70 to win by one stroke. Her 6-under total was highlighted by 13 birdies over the three rounds that included seven in her opening round 5-under on the par-70 layout. Based on the win earlier this year and my solid performance at the qualifier I thought the best decision to pursue my dream to play on the LPGA Tour would be to turn professional and work on my game full-time, says Selena who graduated from Markham s Bill Crothers Secondary School in June 2016 and spent the past winter in Florida working on her game. studying Japanese. She has also completed all levels of the Royal Conservatory of Piano, so it s with these gifts that professional golf falls into the realm of possibilities. To pursue her dream, Selena made the move to The Thornhill Club last month. When I played the Canadian Junior Girl s Championship here in 2014 I fell in love with the golf course, says Selena who also has a member ship at Toronto Ladies Golf Club. Thornhill is a great facility for working on my putting and short game and the course is longer at 6,500 yards compared to 6,000 yards at Toronto Ladies so that suits my game better for tournament play. Selena has been and will be playing in select LPGA Tour Monday qualifiers to try an earn spots in tournaments. She tried three or four in the spring with no success, but is learning from the experiences. She is also preparing for LPGA Tour Q-School with the first of three stages that starts at the end of August. Costabile played in many CJGA events from 2011 through She traveled to Trinidad with CJGA Team Canada for the Stephen Ames Cup in 2012, played on the CJGA Team Canada in China at the Aaron Baddeley International Junior Championship in 2014, is a two-time defending champion at the CJGA World Junior Challenge in 2013 and 2014 at Innisbrook Resort in Tampa, Florida, and has enjoyed many local victories was a breakout season for Selena in many ways as she took several huge steps forward. Not only did she win the 2015 AJGA / CJGA Junior Championship at Horseshoe Valley, but she also qualified for the US Girl s Junior Championship and the US Amateur only the second Canadian under the age of 18 to do that and following in the footsteps of Brooke Henderson. For the second year in a row she finished second in the CN Future Links Ontario Championship. Selena led by a stroke on No. 16 in the final round of the three-day tournament, but ended up losing by two strokes. Golf definitely comes with its highs and lows and there are no doubt many more in store for Selena as she hits the road as a young professional golfer with big dreams. n Outside of golf, Selena is also gifted as she is fluent in four languages, English, French, Russian and Spanish and she is also #Your Future Starts Here CJGA Junior Golf News 65

Inspiring our youth to achieve their goals through the sport of golf Each year the CJGA supports hundreds of junior golfers across Canada to enable them to play a sport that they love. However, we have only scratched the surface. While golf is a healthy, wholesome activity that relies on both physical and mental disipline to succeed, it is also relatively expensive. The Canadian Junior Golf Association has made every effort to open the door to all young people, regardless of economic means, but the reality that without greater support these efforts meet with limited success. As the CJGA strives to expand the opportunites for all our youth no matter what their affordability, it requires your financial assistance to help and grow the game of golf.
