The method of applying the urface cover or encaement of nitrocelluloe material or the like form the Subject matter of eparate Copending application, Ser. No. 36,781, filed May 24, 1929 and Ser. No. 4,786, filed June 12, 19, to which cro reference i made. Golf club haft have heretofore been coated or encaed in pyroxylin or celluloid depoited in liquid form a i hown and decribed in copending application Ser. No. 38,11 filed Aug. 12, 1929 to which reference i alo made. (C ) The object of the invention i to provide a Simple, cheap, and economical method of incor porating decorative or other inlay in the urface of pyroxylin or celluloid coated article, and to enable the integral and unitary incorporation of reinforcement, protective, and other element or portion of ditinctive characteritic and the in tegral incorporation of balance weight and the like which by the encaement or coating applied in Semi-liquid form and Set and cured in itu are united into a homogeneou body. In it application to golf club, the preent invention provide for the coating and covering of the golf club head, which coating i preferably, though not necearily, made a homogeneou continuation of the coating of the haft. a covering or encaement for an article which Will hermetically eal the article againt entrance of moiture and which will afford a durable Sur face capable of lating throughout the life of the article without the neceity of refinihing, and which will not readily how wear mark of uage. a bonding of the component part of an article of Sufficient thickne and trength to prevent looening or diplacement thereof uch a trik ing face inert, ole plate, back weight or inlay of golf club, which part are ubject to being looened by hrinkage of the club head and by impact when in play. mean whereby rnamental and decorative in lay may be applied and ole plate and balancing weight incorporated in Such manner a to form a ingle unitary body. a continuou caing or covering ver the head and haft of the club without interruption, break, or overlap at the juncture of the club head and haft. a reinforcement for the hoel of the club head and an effective joinder of the head and haft, there by eliminating the neceity for Wrapping r wopping' and further affording adequate pro tection to and ealing the joint between the haft and head, With the above primary and other incidental object in view a will more fully appear in the pecification, the invention conit of the fea ture of contruction, the part and combination thereof and the mode of operation or their equiv alent a hereinafter decribed and Set forth in the claira

3 S ,946,8 Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein i hown the preferred but obviouly not necearily the only form of embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 i a ide elevation of a golf club to which the preent invention ha been applied. Fig. 2 i a tranvere ectional view of a golf club on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, illutrating the encloing Caing or covering of pyroxylin, celluloid or the like. Fig. 3 i a imilar view of a golf club head preparatory to coating. Fig. 4 i a imilar view of a golf club head after coating, but before trip ping off the urplu material. Like part are indicated by imilar character of reference throughout the everal view. - Referring to the accompanying drawing, 1 i the head of a golf club which may be of wood, compoition or other material, of which 2 i the hoel or neck and 3 the golf club haft eated in a bore in the hoel 2 in the uual manner. Thi haft 2 may be of wood, ordinarily hickory, or it may be a tubular metallic haft uch a are now commonly employed. In preparing the golf club to be coated or en caed by the preent method, the face plate 4 preferably of celluloid or pyroxylin of conider able thickne i ecured to the face of the club head 1 by cementing or by other mean. Inert tud which may alo be of celluloid or pyrox ylin and are preferably of variou color differ ing from that of the face plate 4, are embedded in the triking face of the club head and project through uch plate 4. By ubjecting the face plate 4 and the inert tud to a partial often ing effect of a olvent material before being ap plied to the club head 1, the inert and face plate 4 will integrally unite with each other forming a union and will alo adhere to the material of the head 1. A ole plate 6 of imilar material i applied to the bottom of the club head 1. The margin of thi Sole plate 6 i preferably kived or reduced in thickne a at 7 o that it will conform Smoothly and merge into the urface of the club head 1. Thi ole plate 6 i alo preferably of tened by treatment with a olvent preparatory to it application to the club head o that it con form exactly to the urface contour of the bot tom of the club head and will adhere thereto. It i cutomary to provide at the rear of the club head a balancing weight of different mate rial. In Some cae it ha been found that cellu loid or pyroxylin inert block or weight afford the neceary balance to the club head. Such inert block weight 8 i eated within a mortie 9 formed in the rear of the club head 1. he outer face of thi balance weight or inert block 8 i contoured to agree with the urface contour of the club head, but i projected beyond the Sur face of the club head a ditance ubtantially equivalent to the thickne of the coating nate rial or encaing envelope to be applied. Thi in ert block or balance weight 8 i preferably ce mented or otherwie Secured within the eat or nortie 9. If it be deired to apply to the top of the club head an ornamental deign or a marking panel of ditinctive color, a cutout 10 of heet celluloid or pyroxylin of the deired color i cemented or otherwie ecured to the top Surface of the club head 1. Thi cutout i of a thickne Subtan tially equal to the thickne of the depoit of coating or encaing material to be applied to the club head. A convenient and imple method of attaching the everal part to the club head con it in firt dipping the club head in a Solution of celluloid or pyroxylin which ha been reduced to a Vicou liquid by Suitable Solvent to form upon the club head the thin adheive coating of uch material which will form a union with the mate rial of the head 1 and to which the face plate 4, the Sole plate 6, the balance weight 8 and orna mental or marking panel 10 will integrally unite When Softened with uitable olvent. Thee Several part having been ecured to the head 1 either by directly cementing or uniting with a preliminary coating of imilar material applied to the club head, uch part a are to be expoed to view after the coating or encaing operation and which are of ditinctively different color from that of the coating material are painted r treated with material which will prevent the adheion of the coating or encaing material thereto. It ha been found that an application of ordinary glue or an application of liquid rub ber or rubber cement applied to the face of the face plate 6, the panel 10, or the weight 8, will enable the Subequently applied coating material to be Stripped therefrom. That i to ay, uch glue or cement prevent the union and adher ence of the coating material to uch part. Being thu prepared, the golf club i dipped 90 9 into a vicou Solution of the coating material. Any Suitable Solvent for pyroxylin or celluloid may be employed uch a ether, alcohol, or ace tate, but the preferable olvent for thi purpoe 10 i acetone. The vicou olution cover the entire club head and the haft up to the grip portion. If deired, the haft 3 may have been previouly coated with Such material prior to it attach ment to the club head 1. In uch event, the 110 Solvent in the coating material often the depoit upon the haft ufficient to effect a union of the newly depoited material with that pre viouly applied to the haft. Upon being removed from the dipping tank or receptacle, the urplu 1 coating material i drained from the coated club, the latter being turned to and fro to ditribute the remaining material uniformly and the club i then plunged into a etting and hardening bath Which will congeal the depoited material. Thi bath i preferably, though not necearily a non freezing liquid which ha a great affinity for the Solvent of the coating material and which i maintained at a very low temperature. Benzine or gaoline ha been found to be quite uitable. Such material poee great affinity for the ol vent and tend to extract or aborb the olvent from the depoited coating material and being maintained at a very low temperature it caue the depoited material to chill or et. After re moval from the Setting bath, the coated club i cured in a room maintained at a ub-zero Fahrenheit temperature and in which moiture ha been extracted from the air. Thi permit the Solvent to evaporate lowly without cauing Wrinkle or pimple or otherwie diturbing or ditorting the urface of the depoit. The evaporation of the olvent ha a refrigerating effect tending to lower the temperature of the Surface of the coating material below that of the Surrounding atmophere. However, the moiture having been extracted from the atmophere to Such extent that condenation or frot depoit cannot occur, any tendency of the material to dicolor, pit, or "bluh' i avoided. Thi method of coating article with pyroxylin, celluloid or the like form no part per e of the preent invention but i decribed and claimed in the copending application heretofore referred to. If the initial depoit of coating or encaing

4 2 3) 0 8 material i not of ufficient thickne, the dipping and curing operation i repeated until the depoit upon the urface of the club head 1 i equal in depth to that of the panel 10 and the extenion of the weight 8 beyond the urface of the head i. The depoited coating wholly encloe the ole plate 6 and alo encloe the face plate 4. The olvent in the depoited material acting upon the margin of the face plate 4, often the material of uch face plate ufficiently to form a homo geneou union therewith. The triking face, how ever, of the plate 4 being protected by the glue, rubber or other tripping material will not unite with the overlying coating. However, the ole plate 6 not being o protected by tripping mate rial will be ufficiently oftened by the olvent in the vicou coating material in which the club i dipped to effect a perfect union therewith o that the ole plate 6 become an integral part of the caing or coating envelope. Thi depoit of coat ing material alo unite with the marginal houla der 11 of the balance weight 8, the face of which, however, i protected by the tripping material before referred to. After the dipping operation, the club ha omewhat the appearance hown in Fig. 4 in which the depoited coating material not only overlap and encloe the ole plate 6 to which it i united, but it alo overlap and en cloe the face plate 4, the panel 0, and the balance weight 8. From thee urface, however, the material i eaily tripped, leaving the face plate 4, the panel 10, and the balance weight 8 expoed. Thee part being of ditinctively different color from that of the depoited coat ing material, preent a contrating appearance. The edge of the coating material adjacent to thee expoed urface i trimmed moothly and i preferably finihed by grinding or polihing to preent a uniformly Smooth urface at the junca ture of the inert and the depoited coating mate rial. In the final form the club Will appear a in Fig. 1 and 2 with the ditinctively colored trik ing plate 4, the panel i0, and the balance weight 8 of ditinctive color expoed to view and preent ing a continuou uniform urface with that of the urrounding coated or covered airea. The encaement of the club head continue in interruptedly up the handle haft, which may be coated or encaed in the Sane operation with the club head, or which may have been eparately coated with the coating of which the encaing material of the head integrally unite. While the invention ha been illutrated and decribed in it application to golf club for which it i epecially deirable, it i not limited to uch application, but may be applied to variou article, including handle and frame of tenni racquet, bowling pin, decorative automobile hardware a well a hardware for reidence and numerou other ue.
