7 CARE OF THE COURSE All players are expected to repair all divots on the fairways and pitch marks on the greens. All players, whether using a cart, buggy or carrying their bag MUST carry a sand bucket. Bunkers must be raked after use, and the rake placed in the bottom of the bunker, parallel to the direction of play. CARTS Players in carts MUST OBEY CART SIGNS AT ALL TIMES. Regardless of the signs, carts must never be driven within 30 metres of the green. Players should also be aware that there are areas of the course that are particularly susceptible to cart damage. They should therefore be sensitive at all times as to where they drive their carts so that minimal damage is done to the course. There is a limit to the number of private carts that can be driven on the course, whether they are garaged at the course or brought in by trailer. The owners of all such carts must pay an ANNUAL RIGHT OF ENTRY FEE. Carts not displaying a current permit sticker are not permitted on the course. Should it rain, the Course Superintendent will advise on the day whether or not carts are allowed on the course or if they re restricted to the rough. 5

8 DRESS All players are expected to be dressed neatly at all times. This includes a collared shirt, appropriate shorts, skirt or trousers, shoes and socks. Please note that metal spikes are not allowed on the course or in the clubhouse. Items considered NOT SUITABLE for the course and clubhouse include singlets, bare feet, swimwear, scuffs/thongs, stubbies or football shorts, training apparel. DUTY OF PLAYERS 1. Players are responsible for having a working knowledge of the rules of golf, and they should carry an official rule book with them. These are available from the Club. 2. Players should be acquainted with the Local Rules of the club as listed on the back of the score cards and on the board outside the pro shop. 3. Players should be ready to play a minimum of 15 minutes before their scheduled starting time. 4. Players must adhere to dress regulations, observe course etiquette and avoid slow play. 5. The Match Committee has the right to vary the program if necessary. 6

9 PACE OF PLAY The lowest marker in the group is responsible for the pace of play. At Nelson Bay Golf Club, players are expected to complete 9 holes in 2 hours 15 minutes, and 18 holes in 4 hours 30 minutes. Of course it is possible to complete a round in less than that time if conditions are favourable. Despite the general guideline above, the determinant of an acceptable speed of play is whether you are keeping up with the group in front, not just keeping ahead of the group behind. TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY 1. Walk quickly from the green to the next tee. 2. Don t mark your cards at the green you have just finished. Go straight to the next tee and mark your cards after you have teed off. 3. As soon as it is safe to do so, move forward to your ball, check the distance and select your club. This can often be done before your fellow competitor has played his/her shot. 4. If you are still falling behind, the first two players to putt out can leave the green immediately and hit off while the other two players complete the hole. 7

10 HANDICAPPING The scores of all players are entered into the GOLFLINK database for automatic calculation of handicaps under the SLOPE System adopted by Golf Australia. A player s handicap is calculated as an average best 8 of his/her last 20 scores. This figure is then multiplied by 0.93 to arrive at the player s exact handicap. Any member can log onto the Golf Australia website of: To obtain a new handicap 3 completed 18 Hole cards or the equivalent of 9 hole cards are to be returned to the Handicapper for assessment. Please note the following: Handicaps are intended to enable players to compete in handicap events on even terms. In some circumstances a player s handicap may be reviewed or modified by the Match Committee. 8

11 TIME SHEETS The procedure for entering names for all competitions is as follows: TUESDAYS: Available from 5.15pm on the Monday of the week preceding the competition date. Time sheet entry at match table. Online entry from 7.00 pm WEDNESDAYS: Available from 5.15pm on the Tuesday of the week preceding the competition date. Time sheet entry at match table. Online entry from 7.00pm THURSDAYS: Available from 5.00pm on the Monday of the week preceding the competition date. Time sheet entry at match table. Online entry from 7.00pm FRIDAYS: Available from 5.00pm on the Tuesday of the week preceding the competition date. Time sheet entry at match table. Online entry from 7.00pm The starter has the right to alter hit off times and groupings to assist the smooth running of the competition. 9

12 TIME SHEETS Procedure as follows: Members wishing to be involved in the draw must place their membership card in the relevant barrel prior to the commencement for the draw for that competition. When a member s card is drawn out of the barrel he/she has the opportunity to enter four names only into the time sheet. One of these names must be their own. Once all members in the draw have been given their opportunity to enter their group, the timesheets will then be declared open for general entry. It is the responsibility of every member to delete his/her name as soon as it is known that he/she is unable to play in the relevant competition. After the times listed above, the time sheets will then go live from 7.00pm for online entries. For instructions on how to access the club s website, including the timesheets, new members should consult the Reception or Administration staff. The club s web address is It contains information about club events, both on the course and in the clubhouse. Members can also register their addresses with club administration so they can receive bulletins, newsletters and other communications. 10

13 VISITORS Members of affiliated clubs may be invited to play in Club competitions but they are not eligible to receive a donated trophy. They may be presented with a consolation trophy. Visitors must show their Membership/Golf Link card and handicap cards to the Pro shop staff. Visitors can only book onto the time competition sheet 5 days prior to the event.

14 COMPETITIONS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Open to full playing members and juniors only. To be played over four stroke rounds. MONTHLY MEDALS Open to full paying members and juniors only. To be played over one stroke round. Best A Grade Scratch Golfer award played over 9 rounds with lowest 5 scratch scores to count for overall award. Nett Player of the Year based on Nett placings in each grade in Monthly Medal competitions MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS (SCRATH AND NETT) Open to full playing members. Knockout competitions played under Matchplay conditions and using the Match Index. AMBROSE COMPETITION A team stroke event played as a TWO, THREE OR FOUR PERSON AMBROSE. Each player plays a tee shot at each hole. The best drive is selected. Other members retrieve their balls and in turn play a shot within one club length of the position of the best drive. However if a ball is in the rough or a hazard, the next shots must be played from that condition. This procedure of selecting the best position for each shot continues until the ball is holed. In some three or four person Ambrose events, a drop off rule applies. In this case the player whose ball has been selected does not play the next shot. This applies until the ball is on the green, when all players are then entitled to putt. FOURSOMES AND MIXED FOURSOMES Two players as partners use one ball. The players alternately strike off from the tee and thereafter strike the ball alternately during the play of each hole. Scoring is done as for a stroke round with the deduction of half of the players combined handicaps from the total. If either player incurs a penalty stroke it does not alter the rotation of play. 12

15 COMPETITIONS CANADIAN FOURSOMES Two players play as partners. Both players play tee shots at every hole, and afterwards continue, playing alternately with whichever ball they nominate, i.e. the partner playing the second stroke. Half aggregate stroke handicap. AMERICAN FOURSOMES Both players play tee shots at each hole, and then play a second stroke with their partner s ball. One ball is then selected and play proceeds as in foursomes with the owner of the ball selected playing the third stroke. Handicap allowance is 1/2 of aggregate stroke handicap. FOUR BALL BEST BALL A two person team s event where the team takes the best score by either of them for each hole the best score only is to be recorded. The competition may be either stroke, stableford or par. (Although the correct term for this form of play is 4BBB, it is often commonly referred to as 2BBB). MULTIPLIER Usually a two person teams event where the stableford points of each player in the team are multiplied together, that is, 3 x 0 = 0; 3 x 2 = 6. AGGREGATE A team s event for two, three or four players, where the stableford points for each player are added together for each hole. TEAMS SPLIT 6s Usually a stableford team s event where the best one score of the team is recorded for the first 6 holes, the sum of the best two scores is recorded for the next 6 holes and the sum of the best three scores is recorded for the last 6 holes. 13

17 COMPETITIONS IRISH FOURBALL This is played as a team s stableford event.the scoring is as follows Holes 1-6 Best single score Total of best Two scores Total of best Three scores Total of all scores. L & Z CHALMERS TROPHY 1. Designated Mixed 4BBB events during golfing season 2. Open to members of Nelson Bay Golf Club only. 3. Only mixed pairs are eligible. Points will be awarded to men and women separately (ie. different partners are eligible) Full AGU handicaps apply. 4. Points for each of the first five (5) place getters st : 5 points to 5 th : one point. 6. Resolution of a tie: a count back or at the discretion of Match Committee. 18 COMPETITION NOTES Application of handicaps to various types of Competition: INDIVIDUAL Stroke, Stableford, Par: Full Handicap. Eclectic: Half of stroke handicap on last day of competition, or as determined by the Match Committee. Match Play: Full difference of stroke handicap. HANDICAP MATCH PLAY Lowest marker goes to scratch. The opponent (or team members in team events) then play from full difference of result. Strokes are to be taken from Match Play Index. SCRATCH MATCHPLAY Qualify in grades and then play head-to-head with no allowance for handicap TIES IN HANDICAP EVENTS 1. For 18 hole events the best score for the last 9 holes shall be used. If there is still a tie the last 6 holes. If still tied the last 3 holes. If a tie still persists then hole by hole from the last hole. 2. In 27, 36, 54 and 72 hole events the last 18 holes shall be used and if still tied count-back as in 1 above. 3. In handicap events the relevant handicap or fractions thereof shall be applied. ECLECTIC COMPETITIONS An Eclectic Competition will be conducted for some events. Results will be processed through the Micropower system. 21 MENS, LADIES AND MEDLEY COMPETITIONS Following a decision of the Board in November 2017, Men and Ladies will have equal access to all competitions: 1. The Ladies Match Committee will nominate the competition of the day for Tuesdays and Thursdays, and there will be the medley competition of the day for both men and ladies. 2. The Club Match Committee will nominate the competition of the day for Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and there will be the medley competition of the day for both ladies and men. 3. Male and Female golfing members can play on any competition day of their choosing via the ballot or online. 4. The Match Committee reserves the right to set the competition format in cases where an equivalent medley competition cannot be staged. 19
