NCGA Foundation Youth on Course 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Connecting at-risk youth with the golf course and real world opportunities that are necessary for life.

A Letter from the President Participating Clubs Dear Youth on Course Supporters and Partners, During the last year, nearly 8,500 youth took advantage of subsidized rounds of golf on courses throughout Northern California! We actually put clubs in kids hands and then provided them the opportunity to play a round of golf: both to learn the game and to learn the important life skills that go along with it. All of this was made possible through Youth on Course s program which allows deserving kids to first, take part in clinics that provide key life skills; and then, for $5 or less - to actually play a round of golf! These 8,500 kids, added to our previous year s total, means Youth on Course has now subsidized more than 260,000 rounds of golf for kids who might never had the chance to play. We have a lot to be proud of! Our program is tangible, meaningful and measurable. 260,000 rounds means that kids and the adults in their foursomes have walked together more than 1,000,000 miles. They ve spent countless hours together talking, teaching and learning, and becoming friends in settings many have never imagined. These thousands of miles and hours of camaraderie provided unmatched mentoring opportunities to the kids from the adults who play with them. And as I ve listened to stories from those who played with the kids, the adults learned a lot too! We ve got wonderful team partners and work with hundreds of great people who make all of this possible. More than 100 golf courses throughout Northern California partner with us; dozens of youth development organizations, donors, universities and agencies help us find the kids, and make our programs successful. We thank them all so much for their support! In addition to providing kids the chance to actually play golf, Youth on Course provides many well-attended golf clinics in underserved communities. At those, not only do we talk golf, but we also focus on healthy lifestyles, career readiness and golf etiquette all directed towards developing life skills through understanding the game we all love. And, to continue a program we started last year, we ve provided opportunities for internships at various courses and clubs providing participants an opportunity to learn the business of golf from successful adults who work at the courses. This past year, our Youth on Course scholarship program took a big step forward. Thanks to several generous donors, we are now enabling some of our Youth on Course graduates to attend four-year colleges and universities. All told, more than $500,000 was invested in our future generation of golfers and leaders! We wanted you to have this exciting end-of-year report. We ve been listening to kids who had the opportunity to play a round; to our scholarship candidates, to parents of Youth on Course participants and even staff members from our partner agencies and a common theme has emerged: that the opportunities provided by Youth on Course are lifechanging not only for the participants but for their families. There can be no doubt: providing affordable access for youth to play golf with a parent or fellow golfer, to learn from them, to be mentored by golfers or to receive scholarship money that leads to a first-in-their-family college graduate all of this leads to a better life for the kids we serve! It s this theme that keeps those of us involved in Youth on Course pushing to expand our programs even farther. We are working hard to provide even more opportunities to even more deserving kids. We are grateful for your continued help in doing just that. Expect more great things in the months to come. We know that getting kids on the courses to play the game we love can change their lives forever. Thanks for being a part of that! 3 Affordable and Accessible Golf Approximately 60,000 rounds of golf were subsidized through Youth on Course in Nearly 8,500 youth participants applied the life skills and core values learned at Youth on Course certified programs at more than 100 golf courses in Northern California. They played for $5 or less per round. Adding the 60,000 rounds played in 2012, Youth on Course has now subsidized more than 260,000 rounds of golf. Members become eligible for subsidized rounds by participating in one of 40 certified youth development clubs including Youth on Course s own online curriculum. The curriculum includes core values and life skills training, learning to set goals and the importance of a healthy lifestyle and positive choices. And then the kids apply those learnings by actually playing a round of golf! Note: The NCGA Foundation licensed Youth on Course to the Southern California Golf Association Foundation in 2008 and the Oregon Golf Association in Look for the program to continue its expansion soon. Youth on Course gives me a chance to play all of my favorite courses for a very affordable price. I come from a family with an exceptionally low income, but I am still able to play the game I love, and I thank you guys for that. Connor, 17 year-old Youth on Course member

Clinic Spotlight: Stevinson Ranch Internship Profile: Arron Paulino Youth on Course continued to expand its clinic program in 2012, adding Stevinson Ranch Golf Course, which now serves as a hub for Youth on Course in the Central Valley. Two 20-week clinics were held for both middle and high school students from Delhi Unified School District. More than sixty youth were introduced to golf for the first time, receiving instruction from Stevinson Ranch GC s PGA professionals, along with support from the CSU Stanislaus men s golf team. My main goal is to become a nurse and Youth on Course has taught me a lot about responsibilities. That s important because I m going to be taking care of other peoples lives. Ariandy, 16 year-old Stevinson Ranch Clinic Participant and Intern A local yoga and CrossFit instructor was brought in to ensure that healthy lifestyles and physical fitness were a focus throughout the clinics. Participants were also exposed to the science and math behind the game, through computer and video analysis, in Stevinson Ranch GC s new state-of-the-art Performance Center & Golf Academy. Our collaboration with Youth on Course has enabled us to help local kids and further utilize our fantastic learning facility here at the Ranch, while serving our community. Who knows? The next great young golfer success story may come from right here. Jim Francesconi, Director of Marketing for Stevinson Ranch GC My name is Arron Paulino. During the summer of 2012, I was an intern for the NCGA Foundation s Youth on Course program. I came to YOC through your internship program at the Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City. There, I did everything from preparing merchandise in the pro shop for the 2012 USGA Girls Junior Championship, helping with the bag drop area, and actually using the skills I learned through First Tee and YOC to teach other juniors, ages 7 to 16, about the game I ve come to love. You know, throughout my internship, I did a lot but I will always cherish my time in the bag drop area! Why? Because it was there where I got to know the club s members; learning how to greet them, turn over their carts, making sure that range ball bags were filled, golf carts were stocked with tees and scorecards and always remembering to smile as members arrived to start their play. Golf, I was quickly learning was more than just a game it was a social sport with its own etiquette and culture. I am a First Tee of San Francisco graduate which allowed me to also teach juniors during the internship. Those days were great: juniors would arrive at 9 o clock ready to learn how to chip on the short game area, then they would work on their putting, and take full swings on the driving range. I liked teaching juniors because I knew I was giving back and helping others learn what I had that golf is a wonderful sport and can easily become a favorite hobby creating a lifetime of opportunities and fun! On the days when I worked in the pro shop, I was able to learn some marketing and business skills as well as the all important customer relations aspect of golf. At the shop I learned to effectively display merchandise based on color, size, and display attractiveness. And, I was even able to branch out with some of my own ideas, producing a strategy to make merchandise attractive to the eye for customers looking to buy a souvenir of the 2012 USGA Girls Junior Championship. The NCGA Foundation s Youth on Course has given me an opportunity of a lifetime: to experience what the golf industry does on a daily basis; to be exposed to a real working environment where what I did mattered; to learn time management and business skills that will take me far; and to develop real and lasting relationships with those that share the love for the game of golf. And one other thing: golf s culture is one of manners and rules. One rule I took to heart was always thanking those I met along the way: for a great game; for teaching me how a golf course functioned; and for understanding what was needed on and off the course. This fall, at the Professional Golf Management (PGM) program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, I intend to put all of this knowledge to work. I can t thank you enough!

Scholarships Scholarships represent the final part of the Youth on Course continuum. Participants interested in pursuing higher education, who apply in the final semester of their senior year, are selected after a rigorous interview process. Awards range from $4,000 $5,000 per student. Youth on Course Scholarship Eligibility To be considered for a Youth on Course scholarship, each applicant must meet the following requirements: Must be a high school senior enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited northern California high school with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Must have been accepted for enrollment at a four-year college or university the same year that the scholarship is awarded. The awards are both need and merit based Youth on Course Scholars Diane and Paul Morton Scholarship Slater Meehan of Santa Cruz, CA Stanford University, Economics Geraldine Elizabeth House Scholarship Arron Paulino of San Mateo, CA University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Professional Golf Management Lyn Nelson Scholarship Bianka Aceves Martin of Woodland, CA University of California, Los Angeles, Biology Natalie Laconsay of Vallejo, CA California Maritime Academy, International Business/Transportation & Logistics Goldman Family Scholarship Katherine Abu of Elk Grove, CA University of San Francisco Jael Agbabiaka of San Pablo, CA Lincoln University, Medicine Jed Allen Caseria of San Jose, CA University of California, Davis, Engineering Benito Guijarro of Soledad, CA University of California, Berkeley, Pre-Law/Legal Studies Elexus Hunter of San Francisco, CA Clark Atlanta University, Business Kelsie Lawson of Lakeport, CA Southern Oregon University, Psychology Iman Mosieh of Chowchilla, CA University of California, Merced, Cognitive Science Austin Smotherman of Loomis, CA Southern Methodist University, Business Administration Paul Porter Memorial Scholarship Mariela Morales of Salinas, CA California State University, Monterey Bay, Liberal Studies Christopher Ortiz of Salinas, CA California State University, Fresno, Biology This particular scholarship from Youth on Course is extra special because of your long time support and encouragement of junior golf, which has had a direct influence on my life. As a junior player for most of my life, I have benefited directly from the Youth on Course program. The core values that a junior golfer learns over the years play a major part in their life, both on and off the course. As you know, I am a big supporter of junior golf and I intend to continue; I know that it is a winning combination of life skills and the sport I love so much. I look forward to staying in touch over these next four years. Be sure to keep an eye on our SM golf team...with five top incoming freshmen we have very high expectations for the upcoming year. I am proud to be a Youth on Course scholarship recipient and will remain a loyal member of the NCGA despite my new address in Dallas! Please accept my thanks again for your generosity. Austin Smotherman Southern Methodist University, Class of 2016 I am honored to have been selected as a recipient of the 2012 Lyn Nelson Youth on Course Scholarship. Thank you so much for recognizing my achievements and believing in me. It means so much to me and my family. Playing golf has taught me discipline, to be patient, and to stay focused. I ve learned to have an open mind and a positive attitude because there is always room for improvement. I hope to recruit enough girls to establish a Women s Golf team at California Maritime Academy over the next 4 years. I will keep you informed of my progress! Again, my sincere thanks to you, the NCGA Foundation, and everyone involved in the decision making around funding of this scholarship. Natalie Laconsay California Maritime Academy, Class of 2016

He gambled on the SoMa district of San Francisco by opening MoMo s before AT&T Park was even open. MoMo s would later establish itself as the go-to place before and after Giants home games and Pete would later open sports-bar themed Pete s and Pedros Cantina next door on King St. That gamble has obviously paid off but he also made another gamble supporting Youth on Course during the infancy of the program. I have loved the bonding experiences with my family and friends associated with golf. I want to help give other kids the same chance I had, said Osborne. Osborne is now a mainstay at YOC events and continually spreads the word through relationships he builds on and off the golf course. Pete s support is emblematic of hundreds of others who put their valuable resources into the success of future generations who knows; maybe a Youth on Course participant will be the City s next great restaurateur.

Corporate Support: Walmart The Walmart name is synonymous with supporting local communities and over the years, they have steadily increased their support for Youth on Course. They participated in all three major fundraising events for Youth on Course, and we thank them for their continued support for the youth in Northern California. Foundation Support: The National Recreation Foundation The National Recreation Foundation focuses on assisting organizations that provide youth with the opportunity to learn and grow through healthy lifestyle education. In supporting Youth on Course with a generous three-year grant, the organization has ensured that Youth on Course clinic activities include educating youth about the choices they make and the impact it has on their bodies. The National Recreation Foundation also supports the expansion of Youth on Course into additional communities both inside and outside Northern California.

Events Youth on Course conducts three annual fundraising events that support all its youth programs. Conducted in beautiful settings in Pebble Beach, Napa Valley and the Sacramento foothills, these events offer individuals, corporations and groups of friends the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic day playing golf together while learning more about our programs and supporting deserving youth.
