8 PUBLISHER S NOTE Spring 2010 Welcome to the inaugural edition of The Harness Edge Downunder. Launching a new harness racing publication in the year 2010 may have surprised some but as has been often said, there is always room for a better mousetrap. This is a sister publication to The Harness Edge Magazine which is based in Canada. It has been in existence for just over seven years and is arguably the best read racing publication in North America. Coupled with the most active news gathering website for racing, it blankets the game like no one else. One year ago the decision was made to take The Harness Edge Magazine online. It was a bold step but with the death knoll sounding for the traditional printed magazines combined with the new emerging Internet technologies, the timing was perfect. For more than 20 years I ve had a very personal relationship with the Southern Hemisphere racing industry in both New Zealand and Australia. Over the years I have made a dozen trips Downunder and regarded it as a second home all the while becoming very familiar with racing. Combined with the large number of Australian and New Zealand trainers who have found their way to North America and I have interviewed it often left me feeling like an honourary Aussie and Kiwi. Our online magazine has proven to be successful in North America which led to the notion that perhaps it had applications in the Southern Hemisphere. We conceived the notion of creating an online quarterly publication with well constructed feature articles on people, horses and issues from New Zealand and Australia. We realized that it was a novel concept producing a publication for both countries but the world is getting smaller every day. There has been a steady stream of horses from both countries that are racing at North American tracks and as a result there is plenty of interest in what s going on in Canada and the United States. Likewise, the flow of shuttle stallions continues unabated. Upwards of 40 are headed to do stud duty in Australia and New Zealand for the upcoming breeding season. Last year the highest priced pacing filly sold at the Standardbred Horse Sale Company s annual yearling sale was purchased by Sydney construction magnate Emilio Rosati (who is the lead story in this issue). So, all in all it made sense and after a personal junket to both countries in May where the reaction to the idea was totally favourable, it was all systems go. For a first effort we believe this issue is commendable and we are particularly appreciative of the breeding farms and product suppliers who came on board with advertising support. Because it is free to the world, obviously the source of revenue which keeps everything going comes from advertisers. In many ways harness racing is healthier in the Southern Hemisphere than in the north. Clearly, people love their racing and have a strong appreciation for the animal. Not every horse is walking around with a For Sale sign on his back. There is a great pride of ownership and it s not all about the dollar. With spring in the air, there is plenty of anticipation about the impending racing season. Last year the Inter Dominion Championship victory by Blacks A Fake equaled anything a Hollywood script writer could dream up. In New Zealand, Monkey King emerged as the little horse that could and did. Both will be back for some dramatic matchups. In creating a magazine it is always a challenge to try to offer a little bit of something for everyone. That has also applied with The Harness Edge Downunder but we feel that this first edition does give some insight into the people who perhaps have not had much exposure previously. And this is not to say that it will be dedicated to the high rollers. Many of the best stories are anything but. Just ask Dr. Trevor Lindsay who owns the brilliant filly Bettor Cover Lover (also a feature in this issue). News per se will not be part of this magazine. With the speed of information and the demand for having it available immediately, no magazine can cope. The advancement of the Internet has changed the world we live in. We invite your comments and suggestions on the publication. With the online process there are many features offered that a printed product cannot. These include video links and website links. An instructional page is located at the start of the magazine to walk you through the process which makes the whole magazine experience just that an experience. This is harness racing 21st century style. Welcome to The Harness Edge Downunder. Thank you for joining us. 10 UGLY BETTY BETTOR COVER LOVER will never win any beauty contests but she was the best juvenile pacing filly in New Zealand and will be on a mission to prove that she's the best in Australasia in this coming season. By Barry Lichter The office girls started laughing hysterically almost as soon as Trevor Lindsay walked into his Perth vet clinic. The image, frozen on a giant television screen on the wall, was unmistakable. It was Betty's head. Her great, big ugly head. And this was their way of welcoming Lindsay home, their tongue-in-cheek congratulations on Betty's latest triumph on New Zealand's season-crowning Harness Jewels race day. "They think it's hilarious," says Lindsay. "They all have beautiful Thoroughbreds and here I am racing a dog, ugly Standardbred. "But I don't mind. I think she's magnificent." Magnificent was just one of the few superlatives bandied around after Betty, better known to her fans as Bettor Cover Lover, destroyed her opposition in the $200,000 Two-Year-Old Filly's Diamond at Cambridge, in New Zealand's North Island, overcoming a second row draw to clock a 1:56.9 mile, unextended. It brought to a close a near perfect season, during which the Bettors Delight filly won five of her six starts, earned a bankroll of $322,000, and predictions that she could be on the verge of smashing all records in the new season. Lindsay, 45, laughs when he recalls how harness racing's new pin-up girl was shunned by virtually everyone when she went under the hammer as a yearling at PGG Wrightson's premier sale in Christchurch the previous year. "She had a head like a packing crate, it must have weighed 100 pounds, and she was so big she had to duck to get in and out of her box."

12 Ugly Betty While many buyers were put off by the filly's XXXL size, she was just what Lindsay was looking for. "She looked like she'd throw a big foal and that's what I wanted her for." Lindsay's buying expedition to New Zealand was primarily to upgrade the quality of his broodmares and the pedigree of this colossus fitted the bill nicely. Her dam Front Cover Lover was a half-sister to the former brilliant filly Under Cover Lover (1:51.8), whose exploits in the States he'd closely followed in the late 1990s. Lindsay says he wasn't put off that only two of Front Cover Lover's five previous foals had raced and only one had won. "I heard that a lot of the family had been small. And I took the punt that Bettors Delight would do something for the mare." Lindsay had been warned the filly was shocking legged but while slightly back at the knee, he marked her an acceptable 1.5 in his catalogue, and was amused to see later in the sale that some he'd scored as bad as three sold for as much as $150,000. The filly might have been a bit lazy when she walked and trotted but Lindsay set $25,000 as his limit for her. But when lot 20 came into the ring the auctioneer was flat out getting a bid on the filly, then named Betty Lindenny. "I wouldn't mind betting the other bid came from the auctioneer himself," says Lindsay, who secured her for just $12,000. It was Lindsay's next move, however, which could have been his smartest. Not knowing any trainers, he turned to his first and only New Zealand contact for advice on where to send the filly. And when North Auckland's Peter Smith recommended 1,000 club member Brent Mangos, Lindsay trusted his judgment implicitly. The previous year, when Lindsay kicked off his broodmare improvement plan, he bought a race mare from New Zealand on the recommendation of Smith. Named Montel, she had raced five times in Perth for Lindsay and his wife Colleen for five wins. "Yes, we were a bit cock-a-hoop when we came over because of how Montel was going. I ended up buying four yearlings. Dr. Trevor Lindsay offers some thoughts to Greg O'Connor after his Bettor Cover Lover's final start of her two-year-old season, the $200,000 Harness Jewels at Cambridge which gave her $322,000 in earnings on the year. "And as the tickets (sale dockets) kept coming, I kept going back to Brent to ask if he'd take another, and another. "I didn't have anyone else to go with and it looked like Brent had come through the right channels and was very professional. "I also liked the idea that he agisted horses, broke them in, trained and drove them." Lindsay says he was pleased to learn that as well as being a talented trainer, Mangos was one of only 18 drivers in New Zealand to have guided home more than 1,000 winners. And that night, over a few ales, Lindsay discovered that Mangos was a good bloke too. They'd become quite chummy a few hours later when Lindsay remembers some lunatic driving a Harley Davidson into the pub. And by two in the morning when Colleen eventually dragged him out, they were best buddies. In the ensuing months Lindsay and Mangos chatted regularly over the phone about the progress of his babies but Mangos always went quiet when Betty's name came up. While Mangos was upbeat about how much speed his $40,000 Christian Cullen filly, Jacinta Jones, was showing, the "other big thing" was always only "coming along okay." Mangos confides now Betty was so Photo by Trish Dunnell Spring 2010 The Harness Edge Downunder

14 Ugly Betty slow she couldn't get warm in the cart. Her work had been so ordinary before her first workout, he was expecting her to run last. But Betty won her first test and every other one. When Lindsay fielded his first call from Mangos he was expecting bad news. "I told Brent not to ring me unless it was really bad news or really good news and he'd promised me he wouldn't ring. "The first time he called I thought something must have broken down. "But I could detect some excitement in his voice and then he started ringing me each week on the way home from the trials. Peter had told me Brent plays things fairly cool so I started to think we could really have something." And when Bettor Cover Lover debuted in a Sires' Stakes heat at Addington in Christchurch on February 12, just a few days before the yearling sales, Lindsay was there to see what he calls the most spectacular win he's seen anywhere. "She galloped for 140 metres (horses are disqualified if they break for 150 metres) at the start and settled so far off them I gave up all hope. "I wondered what he was doing when he started to improve three and four wide. She didn't handle the home turn but still kept coming and got up to beat them. "I'd never seen a horse win a race like that and thought, wow, we've got a superstar." Lindsay was so excited about the win he took the biggest gamble of his life four days later, paying $95,000 for a yearling filly by Artsplace out of Auckland Cup winner Kates First, a half sister to Christian Cullen. "I just kept telling my wife: 'Betty will win it for us, Betty will win it'." Lindsay had actually started sulking, thinking he'd missed out on the filly when he stopped bidding at $85,000, only to have a bid spotter approach him and ask him to sign for $95,000. While Betty's earnings stood at just $9,900, Lindsay was right in his prediction of what was to come. Another $12,875 went into her account when she won a Yearling Sales Graduate at Addington a week later. When Lindsay paid a $13,600 late fee to get Betty into the $131,000 Caduceus Club Classic at Auckland in April, one of the One of the reasons Dr. Lindsay liked Bettor Cover Lover at the yearling sale was her size which he felt would be a benefit down the road when she becomes an addition to his broodmare band. Her breeding helps too given that she's closely related to the $864,000 winning mare Under Cover Lover. season's plum races for fillies, he was confident Betty could pick up the $78,000 purse. But three weeks before the race Betty hurt a hind leg in her paddock and missed a week's work. Mangos estimates she was just 60 per cent fit on race night when she also had blood coming out of her feet at the start from a greasy heal complaint. A photo finish went against Betty, by half a neck, but Lindsay believes she still would have won had Paradise City not taken her line in the stretch. "We were gutted. We thought we might never win another Group One race. We spent a week sulking." Three weeks later, Betty was back to her best when she claimed the $170,000 Yearling Sales Final at Auckland, a race Lindsay and his family nearly missed. When their flight from Perth was cancelled, Lindsay had to hurriedly rebook on another airline and fly via Sydney to get to Auckland in time. Spring 2010 The Harness Edge Downunder

16 Ugly Betty "We'd been looking forward to the trip for six months but it turned into a real nightmare. The traffic in Auckland was terrible and the taxi driver didn't know where he was going, and took us to the wrong place. We got to the track 20 minutes before the race." A week later, everything went to script when Betty landed the $156,000 Sires' Stakes Fillies' Final, clocking a record 1:55 mile rate for the 1,700 metres, the three-length margin flattering her rivals. She ended the season being named New Zealand's Two Year Old Filly Pacer of the Year. Mangos is reluctant to compare Bettor Cover Lover with his former champion filly Molly Darling, who won 17 races here and another seven when campaigned in the States in "We had Molly from day one so I had a bit of a thing for her. Molly always had high speed. This filly is a great stayer and she's developed speed. She can run a quarter in 27 and a piece all the time now. "Certainly from the times she's running, she's going to be as good, if not a little stronger. And she's still untapped." Lindsay says he and Colleen pinch themselves every week to make sure they're not dreaming it all. Surprisingly, he isn't fielding scores of offers. "A bloke yelled out one night at the trots 'how much do you want for her?' But I think most people know I'm not a seller of fillies. How could I find another one like her? And if we look after her, hopefully we'll get a few nice foals out of her." Lindsay says had Betty been in Perth he would have started breeding from her this season by embryo transfer. The technique, primarily used with mares that have trouble carrying foals, involves transferring a fertilized egg to a surrogate mare. The procedure has also been tried on some top race mares to allow them to continue racing and Lindsay is determined to prove it can be successful even though two attempts with Montel failed, one foal slipped early and another was born a mummified mess. "The jury is still out on whether it works but I can't see a problem with it. We do about a dozen mares here each year." It's a wonder Lindsay has the time for the experiments or the space to house the mares given how busy his practice is. He owns and runs the biggest veterinary hospital in Perth, a facility neighbouring the Lark Hill Thoroughbred training complex, which took him four years to build. "We took a huge risk with it," says Lindsay. "I worked from home while we built it and sometimes I cringe when I think how far out we stuck our necks financially. "My wife used to be scared about it but we always seemed to find a way." A few minutes down the road Colleen runs their agistment property, looking after 80 outside horses and 20 of their own. "It pays for some of our slow racehorses," says Trevor. It hasn't taken the Lindsays long to accumulate a lot of horses, breeding from 14 mares each year. They have 10 weanlings, 10 yearlings, 10 two-year-olds, a few three-year-olds and a handful of older, broken down veterans whom they pamper. Coming to Christchurch? h rch? 20 BAD LUCK FOR BETTY S BREEDERS When South Island breeder Dennis Bennett says breeding horses is a tough game, he knows what he's talking about. But Bennett, and his partner Linda Joyce, can still laugh about the one that got away. The couple, who operate Lindenny Lodge at Rangiora, on the outskirts of Christchurch, not only sold Bettor Cover Lover for a song, but also got rid of her dam just before the superstar started racing because she was throwing such ugly foals. Bennett was feeling pretty pleased with himself the day he picked up Front Cover Lover, in foal to Bettors Delight for just $8,000 at a dispersal sale. The mare was out of the broodmare gem Vain Franco, who had produced eight winners from 10 foals to the races. And being a half-sister to pin-up race mare of the late 1990s, Under Cover Lover, he figured buyers would go nuts when they saw all the black type on the pedigree page. Bennett didn't worry too much that Under Cover Lover's owners Graham Pearson and Jerry Tulley had quit the mare after breeding four foals that showed little. And he knew that Bill Cameron, who bred one foal, later named Back Cover Lover, was simply getting out of the game. "She was a nice, big strong mare and I knew the right gene pool was there. It was just a matter of finding the right nick." But when the foal was born, even though she looked at Joyce with "big, doe eyes," it was the rest of her body that was the worry, there was just too much of it. Bennett remembers hearing the same comments over and over when 17 trainers visited his farm to inspect the filly before the yearling sales. "She was a big, heavy girl by then and they didn't like her at all. They all said she was back at the knee, had an ugly head, and it would be years before she got her legs going." On sale day, with the auctioneer struggling to get a bid on Betty Lindenny, Bennett was beginning to think he'd have to take her home. But a bid finally came in at $12,000, the lowest he was prepared to accept, and out she went. Undeterred, Bennett mated Front Cover Lover with Real Desire. Having taken a battering in the ring that year, trying to sell unwanted fillies, he was happy when she foaled a colt. "But he was a big, ugly sod too." When offered at the sales the following year he failed to fetch a bid, Bennett later selling him out of the ring for $10,000. Now a two-year-old, called De Malmanche, he is unraced in the stable of Mark Jones. When Front Cover Lover then missed to McArdle, the couple decided not to try another stallion. "We had lots of other mares to serve." And when they decided they couldn't justify having so many mares with the economy in freefall, Front Cover Lover, having produced some ghost train frighteners, was one of the first to be culled. "She was quite a heavy boned mare and just seemed to throw big, ugly foals. "Rather than pay another stud fee, we thought we'd just move her on." Bennett had a ready buyer for the mare too, Hamish Scott, co-owner of top pacing mare Kiwi Ingenuity, had once approached him, saying he'd been interested in buying her at the earlier dispersal but had overlooked the sale. In October 2009, Bennett sold the mare to Scott and his partner Dr. Kim Lawson for just $2,000. Little more than three months later, Betty Lindenny, her name changed to Bettor Cover Lover, made her spectacular winning debut at Addington. "You know what they say, sell your mare or shoot it, and you're guaranteed she'll have something good come along." Bennett and Joyce might have missed out on the big dollars but they still cheer Betty home in every race and have even picked up breeder bonuses of nearly $8,000 for her successes. They have decided not to offer any yearlings next year, figuring the economy will still be tight come February and, luckily, they won't have to kick themselves for a while yet when Front Cover Lover's next foal goes through the ring for someone else, the mare missed to Somebeachsomewhere last year. Bennett says it's not hard to guess which sire Scott and Lawson will choose this season, Bettors Delight. It was Lindsay's thirst for an alternative kind of competition that got them into racing horses in the first place. A "mad" sportsman, who represented Australia at indoor cricket, and played Aussie rules football until the age of 27, Lindsay turned to racing when his body started deteriorating and breaking down. Their decision to pursue harness racing instead of Thoroughbreds was purely because cricket took precedence to Saturday afternoon gallops. And when their first pacer, sourced from New Zealand, Mazer Mead, won half a dozen races they were hooked. The first three foals he bred from a gifted mare were no good so Lindsay started buying yearling fillies. After five years of that, with moderate success, he started breeding from them too, then got the wife's hard word to stop buying more as numbers mushroomed. Lindsay, however, with his competitive urge to be the best, was never satisfied. For several years he dreamed of going to New Zealand to buy fillies, gobsmacked over the quality of the pedigrees he saw in catalogues a mate always brought round. The year he finally did it, he was penniless, under the financial burden of building his clinic. "I was in so much debt and had no cash flow that I arrived without a dollar to spend. "I just watched and took notes until I spotted this little Elsu filly and put my hand up for a bit of fun." Lindsay recalls going to $8,000 until his mate, who also happened to be his accountant, held his arms behind his back. The filly was knocked down at the next bid, and cruelly went to Perth where as Ella Sue she has driven Lindsay mad for the last two years regularly beating his own pacer Our Centrefold Angel and now boasting a record of eight wins from 16 starts. Little wonder Lindsay splurged on four Kiwi yearlings last year and bought another five for Mangos this year. There haven't been too many phone calls from the trainer yet, apart from news the pricey Artsplace filly broke in well. But Lindsay knows the phone will start ringing again soon now that Betty is back in work.
