Q A & chris ryder Fifty-four years ago the town of Greymouth, New Zealand added another person to its census roll with the birth of Chris Ryder. There is no signage to denote the event, which is hardly surprising given that few New Zealanders are fully aware of the accomplishments the man has made in the harness racing game. Two decades ago he made his way to North America. The record book shows that since then he has trained the winners of more than $26 million to go along with close to 1,000 races won. But those numbers do not fully highlight the number of quality horses he has selected as yearlings, developed and raced. As a result Ryder has never been given his just dues. When leading trainers are discussed, he is not one that is often included. That may be because he does not travel in the circles where such debates takes place or that he simply is not interested in such matters. The truth is for two decades Ryder has more than survived in the toughest arena in the world for racing horses. He s based at Winner s International Farm in New Jersey located not far from his home in Allentown. His headliner this year is the sensational filly pacer Put On A Show who has earned $1.4 million and counting. The Rocknroll Hanover filly owned by Joanne and Richard Young and Craig Henderson, has eight wins and a second in 10 starts so far this year. Earlier this summer Ryder sat down with The Harness Edge's publisher Harold Howe to discuss his life, his business and his hopes for the future.

Q&A: CHRIS RYDER Photo by New Image Media If there were one word to describe your career training horses it would have to be consistent. Of the last 13 years there have been only two that have not generated purse winnings of at least one million dollars. How have you managed to do that? First, you have to have a steady supply of babies coming through the barn. Without that there is no chance of getting the numbers. I just like going to the yearlings sales, that attracts me, and they are not always expensive. Put On A Show has been the star of the Ryder stable for the past two years. The sophomore pacing miss currently has a life summary of 15 wins and three seconds in 19 starts for $1,410,398 in earnings. Her stakes victories include the Eternal Camnation, Shes A Great Lady, Bluegrass and International Stallion Stakes, several New Jersey Sire Stakes, the Valley Forge, the Tarport Hap and her Mistletoe Shalee elimination in a life best of 1:50. You must be very proud of what you ve accomplished as an immigrant to the United States from New Zealand. Yes, English is spoken there but it still is a foreign land. Yes, I am proud of what has been done but I don t think about it much other than when people bring it up. I don t like to focus on it because there is always another horse out there that is going to sell for not a lot of money and go on to do well. I buy some expensive yearlings but overall most are in the mediocre price range, which began out of necessity and still does a little bit. I m thankful for those owners who have invested in these yearlings over the years. It s been said that you are underappreciated for your ability to select yearlings. Notwithstanding your success training, it is your ability to find quality horses year after year that is your strength. Do you take that as a compliment? Absolutely, because that is what I try to do. When you go to the sales you have to think horses and not money. You can t go in trying to get the horses that everyone is talking about. That is not the way I want to do it and can lead you on the wrong path. How much of that comes from your upbringing in New Zealand? All of it. I remember my father buying weanlings and keeping them for three or four months before selling them. He had a good eye for a horse especially young ones and that stuck with me. A good stockman to me is someone who can buy the right horse and the price is not part of that. You can pay a lot of money and still not get the right horse. 5 Q&A: CHRIS RYDER more power to them. But there are not many in that position. All of us have to deal with what we ve got and shouldn t think of it as a handicap because it s not, often it s a help. Let s digress to your origins in New Zealand. Were horses always in your family? My father and grandfather both had horses. I began riding ponies when I was 10 years old. I left school to become a beautician for 10 years and did a bit of riding until I got too big and then I was converted to Standardbreds. I had good exposure through working for my father and then my older brother who had a stable. Then I came to Canada and was a groom for a while in Montreal but I didn t really apprentice as a second trainer or anything like that. I learned it as I went along. I did learn how to shoe a horse, which I think is very important. There would be some young people who would laugh at that comment. Yeah, well that s okay, it doesn t worry me. I m not saying you have to know how to shoe a horse but I find it an advantage. If you can pick up a horse s foot and see that something is not right it might prevent a bigger problem later on down the road. I see a big difference in the New Zealand horse of today for example, a huge difference. Just occasionally will you see these horses come over to North America with big feet. I m not sure why other than maybe the changing breed. You touched on being a beautician or hair stylist. Were you playing with the horses on the side? That s about right. I was in the Christchurch area because we d moved from the Greymouth area some time earlier. My father was a dairy farmer on the west coast but when he moved to Christchurch he worked in a stable and bought and sold a few farms. He also stood some stallions at one point including a son of Good Time and a colonial-bred. The last 15 years or so though he just trained horses. He actually came to North America at one point bringing up some horses with Don Hayes in the 1970s. He s still alive; he s 86 now. He watches the racing from here on the Internet. When did you get the idea that you could make a living racing horses? We came over because my wife, Nichola, was offered a very good job in the New York area. I got a few good horses but didn t think I was going to have a career training horses. I did the horses because I was at a bit of loose ends. But getting those good horses right away was a bit like a drug and I wanted more. Tell us about coming to Montreal. When I was 18 I finished my hair dressing apprenticeship and came to the United States with my parents to Saratoga. I was there a few months and met Gaetan Baillargeon, the father of Mario and Benoit. Simply the best! 7 Q&A: CHRIS RYDER Photo by New Image Media I went to work at his farm north of Montreal and it was pretty good. That was just a summer job for two or three months. Then I moved to the old Blue Bonnets track to work for Albert Hanna. That was good for another two months before I went back to New Zealand. It was a lot different from New Zealand. Horses were in stalls a lot more and it was more regimented. But it was also more organized. There was one groom to four horses unlike back home where a man might have one helper for 20 horses. I think I liked it because all the focus was on training only. In New Zealand after you got done the horses you might be haying in the afternoon. I can t say I preferred the lifestyle but I did like the horse part. Many Kiwis are quick to get away from New Zealand to come to North America but after a couple years are often just as quick to return but you were not like that. That s right; I still like New Zealand and probably will retire there someday I hope. But there is nothing like racing at the Meadowlands. There is something Another of Ryder's top performers was the Yankee Glide mare Mystical Sunshine who earned just under two million dollars in her career thanks to wins like the one above in the Breeders Crown at Mohawk in about all the great racing there and living around it in New Jersey. My first recollection of the Meadowlands probably was Shady Daisy getting beaten by Artsplace in She was in front at the head of the stretch and he could not get by her until right at the very end, I remember the race very well. It wasn t a case of thinking this was the place for me. I just liked it. Nichola was quite happy with it all. When I first came over to the US with her I was just working odd jobs for five or six dollars an hour. Then I got a few horses and lost money for a bit but she never turned a hair. What was the first horse of note for you? Kiwi Scooter. Barry Purdon won the New Zealand Derby with him in New Zealand. I used to drive him at the Meadowlands and was under instructions from the owner to stay parked, otherwise he could not see him in the race. That s the truth. He won over $100,000 with me and was a good one to have. Let s talk about some of the horses that have come your way starting with Sealed N Delivered. He was an important one for me. I picked him out at the New Jersey Classic Spring 2010 The Harness Edge Downunder

Q&A: CHRIS RYDER Sale in I knew I could buy one yearling and called Lou D Amato, a car dealer I d met who was into the horses. I told him I really liked this Falcon Seelster colt and thought I could get him for $10,000. I bought him for $18,000, which being naive seemed a lot of money, but it all worked out. As a two-year-old I liked pretty much everything about him, his gait, gate speed, he didn t do much wrong. He won close to $600,000 that year and was pretty special. As a three-year-old he started out the same way until the North America Cup when he finished fifth. We went right to the Meadowlands Pace and he won his elimination pretty handy but finished tenth in the final. Things went downhill from there. He was a horse that was very good on the front end and as a two-year-old was much the best. There were not nearly as many good ones to challenge him as there was the next year. He just got so he would give it up without too much of a fight and won only $275,000 that whole year. It happens. Shark Gesture was in my barn for one start as a two-year-old and just like that he was gone. But when it s all said and done it s just a horse. You still have your stable and your self-respect. Powerful Toy. Jonathan Newman consigned the horse to the Harrisburg Sale in 1998 and asked me to look at him to see if he should buy him back. He was a Jate Lobell and I didn t like him, he was down in the front end and up in the rear. But I kept going back to look at him because I had this feeling that he was going to be okay. I talked with Brett Pelling about him and he said don t worry about it, some of the Jate Lobells were like that. So I told Jonathan I thought he was worth protecting to $25,000 and I think he took him home for $20,000 or so. I had the horse for six weeks, broken in and he was really nice. Jonathan called and said he needed to sell a quarter of the horse, he actually owned half. I told Spring 2010 The Harness Edge Downunder

Q&A: CHRIS RYDER him he didn t need to because he was a really nice horse. He came back and said he had to. So some other guys bought in and he was a decent horse. He won $200,000 with me and then I lost him after the North America Cup to the famous Bill Robinson. He won over $800,000 by the time he was done. Go For Grins. I think we all make mistakes and that was one of Joe Holloway s. He was a decent horse when we bought him for $25,000 if I remember right. He was winning three-year-old claimers at the Meadowlands but I guess they didn t want to keep him. He won $300,000 mostly for us including the Messenger Stakes that year. Mr Prez. Dave Sabatelli had the horse at two but lost his license for a year and I was approached to take the horse, who was a son of Presidential Ball. He was a decent two-year-old and raced in the North America Cup and Meadowlands Pace but after that he bled and was not the same horse. He won around $300,000 I think lifetime. Metropolitan. We bought him at Lexington from Bart Glass in the Hunterton consignment. Norm Smiley and I had looked at all the pacing colts at Hunterton but when Metropolitan was in the back parade ring at the sale Norm came up to me and said there was a Hunterton colt we hadn t seen. I said, no we d seen them all. But what had happened was Bart Glass had him at his own farm rather than at Hunterton s farm. He just brought him straight to the sale so we actually hadn t seen him. Anyway, here he was walking about the back ring and Norm said he d heard some really good reports on this horse. Then the horse walked down that alley to the ring and I saw him go past. Norm asked about his conformation. I went around by the sliding door to look at him and he was really nice, magnificent. He went to $100,000 and then $110,000 when Norm looked at me and asked if he should go another bid. I said yeah and he got him for $115,000. He was a great investment. He had a little bit of seconditis but still won $1.3 million and his oldest foals are now two. Willow Run Gracie. What a sweetheart. We claimed her from Ray Schnittker for $15,000 at Yonkers. She had a good record (1:56.1) but she had bad knees. We made a few dollars with her and then she was done. I called around and could not get any farm to buy her or give me credit. I called Hanover Shoe Farms a couple times and finally I think they give me $15,000 credit. How good a buy was that for them? It was terrific as she turned out to be the dam of Windylane Hanover who won $1.2 million. Unfortunately she died after getting kicked in an elbow. I bought two of hers but not the right one which shows what I know. Cathedra Dot Com. She was bred by Sampson Street I used to run marathons and found out that when I was fit I could run hard for 10 miles so why should it be hard for a horse to run hard for less than two minutes? Stables, Jonathan and Nancy Newman and Delegance Stable. She was a little, dark filly by Presidential Ball that they agreed would not bring $6,000 at the yearling sales so they figured they might as well train her. She was the first foal of Cathedra. She knew how to add and had $1.6 million earned by the end. She made over one million dollars at three and it wasn t like there was no one to race against her either although she didn t have to face Bunny Lake too many times. She was just a great filly. Mystical Sunshine. I bought her at Harrisburg for $42,000 as a two-year-old. She was a good looking filly who showed a time of 1:57 and a bit. She had not raced a lot but showed a last quarter in 28 seconds at Indianapolis and I thought that s for me. There s a long story about her. She had a big knee at Harrisburg sale time. She did go to her knees a little bit. She took a bit of maintenance and was a tieup horse too. I brought her to Canada for the Casual Breeze and Elegantimage. It was a good night for me when she won the Elegantimage because Metropolitan was second in the North America Cup the same night for about $800,000 earned in one night. She won almost $2 million by the time she was done and was a top older mare. Art Major and McArdle. Art Major was bought for $65,000 from Brittany Farms as a yearling. Deena Frost had the full brother, Perfect Art, who won over $500,000. He was from a Nihilator mare which I loved, a great family. He won five of eight as a two-yearold, came back as a three-year-old and I couldn t do any good with him. He went to Bill Robinson and did super. Now standing right alongside Art Major at that time was McArdle. He was a different kind of horse but never, ever gave up. He had a lot of character, handsome and a hard knocker every start. His record speaks for itself. McArdle is the kind of horse everyone should own before they die. I d say Spring 2010 The Harness Edge Downunder

Q&A: CHRIS RYDER the same thing about Shark Gesture. If you don t appreciate owning horses like that you shouldn t own horses. Bob Marks at Perretti Farms steered me towards McArdle. He was a Falcon Seelster colt out of a Nihilator mare, which I said earlier I like. There were good second and third dams, which was exactly what I saw in Sealed N Delivered when I bought him. We bought him for $32,000 at the old Tattersalls sale. I had problems with him early getting him gaited but by April he was very good. He had three good years in a row and had to face Art Major for a lot of it. It happens that one comes along like that but not very often. He won $2.6 million. He s become a stallion who is not commercial which I understand, I still look at the offspring, but they are not in the minds of buyers. I m somewhat biased but there are only three 1:49 twoyear-olds and one is a McArdle (this year s Meadowlands Pace winner One More Laugh). Given the small numbers he has I think that is pretty good. The horse that won you the 2006 Metro Pace, Yankee Skyscaper. He wasn t really on people s radar screen. It was a big night for me, the first $1 million race I d ever won. I d been beaten in the Meadowlands Pace several times so this was a big one for me. It was a horrible night, rainy and windy as hell. I d had a bad dinner with too much coffee and was all jittery and cold but it was a great win. When you think about all the notable horses you ve had has it done anything of significance for you or is each just another brick in the foundation of your career? It helps to keep one going. Look at how some trainers just disappear not all that long after getting a good horse. You mentioned that I ve had a certain number of $1 million years in a row but that s not where I want to be. Needless to say I want to be in the three to four million dollar range. I know not many stables are able to keep turning over those numbers every year but Brett Pelling pretty much did it. I make good money but Brett is a good measure of success in this business. Do you measure the success of your barn on just purse winnings? Nicola does the tax returns for us and pays the bills, I don t look at it. Sometimes when I want to buy a horse I ask her if we have enough money. She is the type to say yes when there might not be enough. As we do this interview I m trying to get an Inter Dominion horse but it s not going too well. It does take money to keep everything ticking over so I guess that is it. You re 54 now. At this stage what lights you up? I ve got to have a top line horse that is making money like Put On A Show. However, I still get satisfaction from having a horse like Willow Run Gracie. They are not champions but they give everything they ve got. They all help to pay the rent. Good trainers do not wake up one morning having learned how to train horses during the night and likewise they Spring 2010 The Harness Edge Downunder

Q&A: CHRIS RYDER don t get up having forgotten how to train horses during the night. But when some owners think they have forgotten, sometimes it s a plus. Some owners move away from the larger stables and it gives opportunity to the smaller guy. That can be good for the bigger guy too because you can have too many horses. The ideal number for me is 30. You base at Winner s International Farm in New Jersey and have been there for many years now. Why that training centre? I like the sand track and the training track a lot, it s very consistent and I don t think anyone could do any better. Regardless of what Put On A Show does or does not do in the coming weeks, what does it mean for you to have a horse like that in the barn? A lot. I like to be able to give an owner what they want. Richard Young has put a lot of money into the game for many years. It is very satisfying for me to be able to give him a top of the line horse that can make this kind of money. For people like Richard it is not so much about the money as it is a way to keep score. They are very successful in whatever they were involved in and very competitive. If they lose money in business or the horses they are gone. It is a very tough game for an owner to make money at and plenty have tried. You ve had a number of experiences where a horse in your barn is struggling and the owner decides to move him elsewhere. How do you deal with that? Of course it is difficult. Shark Gesture was in my barn for one start as a two-year-old and just like that he was gone. But when it s all said and done it s just a horse. You still have your stable and your self-respect. What s interesting is that you seem to be able to retain these owners even though they have relocated a particular horse. I don t believe in having arguments with owners. It s not the end of the world. There was one incident where I did get upset and that was when Yankee Skyscaper was moved and I let the group know about it. Listen, I have a family to support and a business to run. You do what you have to do. In the long run I think it s been the right approach. You just have to keep in mind that it s all business, or as I say, it s gambling. Even in Sweden it s the same. Yes, the Elitlopp draws all kinds of people who are just casual race goers but the rest of the time the people involved are there to try to make money. They love to race horses but want to make money. You say it s just a horse but it s apparent you have a strong appreciation for the animal. Absolutely, but most of the people genuinely like the horses. The grooms love them. After all these years it s still not a bother to go to the barn. This is the same family as Western Dreamer (1.49, $1.8 million) - the 1997 USTA Pacer of the Year, a World Champion, and Triple Crown winner. It s also the same family as World Champion Justin Passing. In his pedigree, Attorney General has the Broodmare Gem Adieu as his sixth dam - a full-sister to the immortal Adios. Breeding Attorney General to mares with Adios blood would add punch to a pedigree. Attorney General would suit a wide range of mares, including those by Holmes Hanover, Soky s Atom, Nero s B B, Albert Albert, Fake Left, In The Pocket, Christian Cullen and Mach Three. Our Attorney General is a nice, big, strong colt and a lovely pacer. I can t fault him. - Ray Green Fee: $ GST STALLION STATION P O Box , Christchurch 8246 Phone: (03) Fax: (03) info@stallionstation.co.nz Danny Boyle: mobile (021) Owen Crooks (Southland): mobile (027)

Q&A: CHRIS RYDER New Zealand horses are categorized by many as being hard to work with and lacking in talent, do you think they get a bum rap? There s always this debate about how to deal with New Zealand horses when they come to North America. I think that when they come over you need to get them straight into it. Get them qualified as soon as you can or if not they need a long period to acclimatize, it needs to be one or the other. I believe an in between approach doesn t work. Look at human athletes. They fly into somewhere and two days later they are competing in the Olympics. Why would you think it would be different for horses? It s been said you are a hard man on your horses, is that a fair statement? I don t believe in babying them or mucking around. I used to run marathons and found out that when I was fit I could run hard for 10 miles so why should it be hard for a horse to run hard for less than two minutes? You train them hard to get them fit and then back off, the racing we have will take care of keeping them fit. I think the horses handle the work just fine too. How much of your thoughts about training horses can you trace back to your upbringing in New Zealand? Quite a lot. I do some things differently here because I m working with a 30 horse stable and the circumstances are different. But the way the horses are cared for is pretty much the way I did it in New Zealand. How much longer will you keep driving yourself? That s a good question. I have some property in New Zealand that I want to develop but I m battling with the local council which may be coming around to seeing things our way. I see myself going back to retire but I don t know what my interests will be. My wife and I talk about that all the time. It might be a case of six months there and six months in America. For the moment I m trying to get a horse to take down for the Inter Dominion but they are not easy to find, all I ve found are Lasix horses (not permitted). Does the game get you down? Yeah, more than maybe it once did. What gets me is when you work on a horse and have confidence in the horse but he proves you wrong. That is one of the most difficult things to deal with. I don t mind a horse getting beaten but when he shows you form and then lets you down that s when I get frustrated. You ve tried your best but it doesn t work out. If you could give a final thought to your countrymen in New Zealand about their horses what would it be? For starters they could price their horses more sensibly. Some of the prices they are asking for horses that are on their mark are way out of line and people in North America are just not going to pay it. I think that racing Downunder has its good points and they all likely learned a good lesson about how easy it is to get carried away with their opinion of their horses, Auckland Reactor may have taught them that. See your horse for what he is. There are not many Cardigan Bays.
