1 Pacesetter Nov. - Dec Volume 44 Issue ssue 6 FUTURE LOOKING BRIGHT FOR 2019 NJ RACING Dear Members, We delayed the release of this edition of the Pacesetter so we could provide the most up-to-date information regarding the state legislature s proposal to enhance purses for Standardbred and Thoroughbred racing. On Dec. 10, the New Jersey Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee advanced legislation (S2992) to provide $20 million annually for five years beginning with the current fiscal year. The committee voted 13-0 in favor of the legislation, which was then put before the full Senate for a vote on Dec. 17. The Senate unanimously voted in favor of the legislation The legislation still requires approval from the State Assembly. An identical bill (A4810) was introduced and referred to the Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee on Dec. 10. It is hoped the bill will advance from committee for a full Assembly vote no later than January. If accepted, the legislation would go to Gov. Phil Murphy for his approval. If possible, please contact your state Assembly members and urge their support for this legislation. Under the legislation, funding will be allocated by the New Jersey Racing Commission equally between the Thoroughbred industry and the Standardbred industry, $10 million each. Of the funds allocated to the Thoroughbred industry, 100 percent will be allocated to Monmouth Park overnight purses. Of the funds allocated to the Standardbred industry, 60 percent will be allocated to Meadowlands overnight purses; 16 percent to Freehold overnight purses; 12 percent to the New Jersey Sire Stakes purses; 6 percent to purse bonuses WHAT S INSIDE NJ SUCCESS AT HARRISBURG...2 NEW JERSEY 2019 RACING DATES...3 VENDOR DISCOUNTS...4 for New Jersey-sired horses; and 6 percent for breeders awards purses. We are grateful to Sens. Vin Gopal, Paul Sarlo, Steven Oroho, Richard Codey, and Nilsa Cruz-Perez for sponsoring the legislation and recognizing the importance of the equine industry to New Jersey. We also are thankful to Assembly members John Burzichelli, Eric Houghtaling, and Joann Downey for sponsoring the Assembly bill. This legislation will not only benefit breeders, owners, trainers, and drivers, but everyone involved in our sport at every level. Additionally, we are very appreciative of the work done by numerous members of the SBOANJ board, TrotPac, and our lobbyist AJ Sabath. These people have put in countless hours promoting our industry and our cause. We would not be in the position we are today without their efforts. In conjunction with the state legislation, we are happy to have reached a revenue-sharing agreement with the Meadowlands for the next 10 years that will add a minimum of $1 million annually from sports betting to the track s purse account. If you wager on sporting events, please make sure to place you bets with FanDuel at the Meadowlands or use the FanDuel app. Thank you again to everyone for their hard work this year. Our efforts are producing results and ensuring the future of our industry. Let s continue to push forward in Mark Ford SBOANJ RACES...5 NJ BREEDER & HORSE OF YEAR...6 TROTPAC...7
2 2 NEW JERSEY SUCCESS AT HARRISBURG SALE One year after nearly reaching the $10-million mark at the Standardbred Horse Sale, yearlings raised at New Jersey farms exceeded that figure at November s auction. Yearlings raised in the Garden State sold for more than $10.1 million at the sale, which was held at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Fair Winds Farm led all consignors in yearling sales average for the second consecutive year. Fair Winds averaged $95,667 for 15 horses, an increase of nearly 4 percent over its $92,000 average for 19 horses in Fifty Cent Piece was acquired for $500,000 by Lennart Agren s SRF Stables. Mark Hall photo. Concord Stud Farm was No. 2 on the list of consignors, with an average of $86,393 for 56 horses. It was a 48-percent hike from 2017, when Concord sold 55 horses for an average of $58,345. The two Cream Ridge-based farms were the only consignors to top $57,000 in average this year. Overall, the average price for New Jersey-raised yearlings was $59,582, an increase of 13.8 percent compared to last year. The average for all yearlings sold at the auction was $42,675. Concord Stud Farm sold the yearling auction s top-priced horse, filly trotter Fifty Cent Piece (by Muscle Hill out of Thatsnotmyname) for $500,000. Concord also sold the second-highest-priced yearling, filly trotter Krickan (by Trixton out of Solveig) for $415,000 and the sixth-highest-seller, trotting colt Swiss House Onfire (by Muscle Hill out of Brooklyn) for $335,000. Fair Winds Farm s filly trotter Hello Tomorrow (by Muscle Hill out of Armbro Deja Vu) was No. 4 on the top-sellers list, going for $380,000. Cream Ridge s Stephen Dey III co-bred the 10th-best-seller, filly trotter Queentrix (by Trixton out of The Ice Queen) for $260,000. She was raised at Heritage Hill Farm near Allentown and is a three-quarter sister to The Ice Dutchess, who sold for $320,000 in 2017 and was a multiple-stakes-winner in Krickan and Queentrix are both New Jersey-eligible. The sale s 26 New Jersey-eligible yearlings sold for an average of $55,615, an increase of 7.6 percent from 2017 when 27 sold for an average of $51,667. New Jersey residents also were active in spending, with 17 of the yearling auction s top 50 sellers being signed for by state-based owners or trainers. In the Standardbred Horse Sale s mixed sale, Concord Stud Farm was the consignor of two best-sellers, 3-yearold filly pacer Come See The Show at $425,000 and 3-year-old colt pacer Nutcracker Sweet at $300,000. Nutcracker Sweet was purchased by New Jersey s John Cancelliere. The state s breeders also were active in reinvesting their yearling sales money in broodmare prospects and stallion shares.
3 NEW JERSEY 2019 RACING DATES The dates listed below from both Freehold Raceway and the Meadowlands have been approved, however there will be a meeting in mid January to revisit these dates. Depending on supplemental income provided by the state we are optimistic that the dates will be revised for both tracks. At this time Freehold Raceway is scheduled to race a total of 76 days in The 2019 racing season will begin on January 4th and go until May 18th with two race days a week, Friday and Saturday afternoons. Then Freehold will break for the summer and resume racing on August 30th and race until December 28th, with the same Friday and Saturday race schedule. Freehold Raceway s request for 76 days is a direct result of lack of purse money, lack of horses and difficultly filling race cards. They were forced to cancel their Labor Day race card this year for those reasons. This contract was negotiated with the horsemen s best interest to create a binding agreement at this time, the SBOANJ is very optimistic that this contract will be revised. The New Meadowlands Racetrack, LLC plans to race a total of 90 live racing dates beginning on January 4, The Meadowlands will race Friday and Saturday from January 4 through August 3. Then they will resume their Friday and Saturday live racing schedule on October 11 through November 30. In the month of December they will add Thursday night racing to their normal Friday and Saturday schedule. SBOANJ CONTINUES CARETAKER CARE PROGRAM The program will continue to offer clean, gently used, clothing to caretakers and horsemen at no charge. The donated clothing will be located on a rack between the doors of the drivers lounge and medical office in the paddock. Recipients are asked to neatly look through the clothing on LAZARUS N TO STAND IN NEW JERSEY IN 2019 Lazarus N, the son of Bettor s Delight, will stand stud at Deo Volente Farms in Flemington, NJ for the 2019 breeding season. Owner of Lazarus N Duncan Taylor of Taylor Made Sales and Stallions made the announcement with Mike Gulotta of Deo Volente Farms. Current racing calendars are posted on the SBOANJ website. the rack, leave hangers, and keep the area clean. Anyone wishing to donate clothing for the Caretaker Care program can drop off clean, gently used, items at the SBOANJ office at the Meadowlands Racetrack or at the SBOANJ office on Route 33 in Manalapan. Lazarus N has won 37 races with a purse total of over $3 million lifetime, with a mark of 1:48.3 at the Meadowlands Racetrack. His short career in North America he has earned over $400,000 in just 6 starts. Winning the Hoosier Park Pacing Derby and the Dan Patch. Lazarus N will no doubt bring more breeders to the New Jersey Pacing Stakes Program. Lazarus N capturing the 2018 Dan Patch at Hoosier Park.
