1 May - June 2018 Volume 43 Issue 2 Pacesetter DEXTER CUP AND LADY SUFFOLK WINNERS AT FREEHOLD Lindy s Big Bang and driver David Miller inherited the lead just prior to the three-quarter-mile point from an off stride On The Ropes and remained in front from there to win Saturday s (May 5) $133,800 Dexter Cup for 3-year-old trotters by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:56.1 at Freehold Raceway. Lindy s Big Bang with David Miller. USTA/Ken Weingartner photo Don finished second and Perlucky was third, although both needed to survive inquiries to maintain their spots. Don s inquiry was for possible interference while Perlucky was examined for compliance with the breaking rule after going off stride nearing the finish line. On The Ropes, who was the race s 3-5 favorite, led from the start from post No. 1, with driver Dan Dube posting fractions of :28 for the opening quarter-mile and :58.1 for the half. As the horses made their way up the backstretch heading for the final turn, On The Ropes made a break, leaving Lindy s Big Bang on the lead. Lindy s Big Bang fended off challenges from Don to his outside and Perlucky in the passing lane to earn his second victory in three starts this season. We got a bit lucky there, winning driver Miller said. My horse still felt strong when Danny s horse ran; I think we would have given him a run. My horse was good today. Also going off stride in the race was last week s Dexter Cup elimination winner Vic s Winner, who made a break on the final turn while in fourth place. Maxus, who was the field s leading money-winner, was scratched injured. The Dexter Cup is the first stakes race on the road to August s $1.2 million Hambletonian. Lindy s Big Bang, though, is not eligible to the Hambletonian. Last year, he was just an average colt, Miller said. This year he s come back with a better attitude and seems to be a lot stronger. We thought we would take a shot here and it worked out. Miller co-owns Lindy s Big Bang with Mel Hartman and David McDuffee. The gelding, a son of Explosive Matter out of Lindy Of My Dreams, is trained by Richard Nifty Norman. He has won four of 15 career races and earned $117,233. He was bred by Lindy Farms of Connecticut. Steve Smith, who on Friday drove the 4,000th winner of his career, won the $66,400 Lady Suffolk for 3-year-old female trotters with longshot Special Miss at Freehold. Special Miss, sent off at odds of 21-1, nipped D Bomb by a nose at the wire in 1:57.3 after following that filly for most of the mile. Natalie Hanover was third. D Bomb, trained by Ron Burke and driven by Yannick Gingras, led the field through fractions of :28.2, :58.1 and 1:28.2 before yielding in the final stride to Special Miss, who took the inside passing lane to victory. It s a great trip when you re following a Burke horse in a stakes races, Smith said. Yannick was a little hesitant with how he was going to get through the turns, so he had to be a little easy, but once he got through the first turn he said I ve just got to go. I just stuck to his head and got sucked into the race. Special Miss, a daughter of Lucky Chucky out of So Special, is owned by George and Tina Dennis Racing and trained by Joseph Columbo. The Brittany Farms-bred filly has won two of 10 career races and earned $44,775. On Friday, Smith got win No. 4,000 with Nora s Tandt at Freehold. Now we ve just got to dig in and keep going until the next one, Smith said. 2 AT THE JANUARY BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING UBS representatives Dustin Illgin, Bruce Berman and Paul Rutsky reviewed the 2018 first quarter report for both Health & Welfare and Pension funds. The lost days at both of the tracks due to inclement weather was discussed. Requests will be made to possibly make up the days later in the year based on availability of horses and Racing Commission approval. Drug testing standards still have not been resolved as presented by the Racing Commission. The SBOANJ will allocate funding to continue the Lasix lawsuit. The clothing drive at the Meadowlands is underway. You can donate clothing to the SBOANJ office or take any clothing directly to the Meadowlands paddock. A meeting with Vin Gopal was set up for May 3rd. He is the new Monmouth County Senator that replaced Jennifer Beck, one of our loyal supporters. Brendan Gill was hired as a consultant for four months to help get state funding for purses and sires stakes The SBOANJ has recommendations for two available seats on the New Jersey Racing Commission. It was agreed that Jennifer Beck is an ideal candidate. Mark Ford talked about the need for representation from the northern part of the state and suggested George Zitone. Al Ochsner will recommend Beck to the commission. INDUSTRY REPORTS The SBOANJ continues to work and represent the horsemen and horsewomen of NJ in all aspects of the Standardbred industry. The following is a review of some of the things we have been doing on your behalf: The Meadowlands and the SBOANJ are again cooperating to provide access to the racetrack for those horsemen wishing to train their young horses over the oval during the month of May. The track will be open each Thursday in May from 7am to 11am. The paddock is open and available during the same hours. The cost for these sessions will be covered by the SBOANJ. President Mark Ford reported that Jeff Gural has agreed to pay $350,000 to the New Jersey Sire Stakes as part of the contract negotiations. Executive Administrator Al Ochsner reported that baby races will be held at Gaitway Farm on June 4th, 11th and 18th. Lunch and refreshments will be available during the races sponsored by the SBOANJ and others. The SBOANJ will attend and help co-sponsor two events this summer: the HHYF introductory level youth camp at Gaitway Farm, July 24-28, and the Christian Harness Horsemen s Association luncheon on Tuesday June 12, NY Chaplains Humberto and Karen Chavez will be guest speakers. 6 REMEMBERING ANTHONY ABBATIELLO 6 The harness racing community lost an esteemed leader and ambassador with the passing of Anthony Tony Abbatiello last fall, but more poignantly, it said farewell to a gentleman and friend. Mr. Abbatiello, who among his numerous accomplishments was co-founder of the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association in 1960 and served as its president for nearly three decades, died Oct. 19 at his home in Colts Neck after complications from heart failure. He was 89. It s not hard to say good things about Tony, said Taylor Palmer Jr., the owner of Boxwood Farm and a former SBOANJ officer who also was instrumental in the formation of the organization. He loved the business, he loved what he did, and he loved people. And he was good at it. That s the big thing. He was great at it. He was completely interested in advancing and helping the horse industry. He was always there for anybody that needed advice or needed help; he would help any way he could. He received many accolades and awards and those were well deserved, that s for sure. I m sure that anybody that knew him or worked with him, everyone would have the same good things to say about Tony because that s the kind of man he was. He was a great, great gentleman. Mr. Abbatiello got started in harness racing following his return from military service in Korea, where he rose to the rank of captain and received numerous commendations, including the Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple Hearts, Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Campaign Ribbon with four Battle Stars, and the Korean Service Medal. He built a home and training center in Colts Neck and found success on the racetrack as both a trainer and driver. He also was at the forefront of efforts to create the Meadowlands Racetrack in the mid-1970s and played a memorable part in the promotion of the facility as he was filmed driving a horse across the George Washington Bridge as well as emerging from the Lincoln Tunnel and pacing on the tarmac at Newark Airport. Away from the track, Mr. Abbatiello served as chairman of the board of the U.S. Trotting Association Board of Directors, chairman of the board of the American Horse Council, and was an officer of Harness Horsemen International. He also was a member of the New Jersey Racing Commission and a trustee of the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame. He received countless awards and honors, none greater than his 1995 induction into the Harness Racing Hall of Fame, where he joined his brother, Carmine. Another former SBOANJ officer, driver Jacqueline Ingrassia, worked for Mr. Abbatiello when she first arrived in the U.S. from her native United Kingdom in A friend of mine had been over here and met Tony, Ingrassia said. I was working for Lord Langford in Wales and I got him to write to Tony for me, and he accepted. Shortly after, I hopped on a plane and came over. When I came here, I didn t know one person. Tony helped me get my license --- he helped me and countless other people --- and was very instrumental in me staying here. He was always interested in helping people. Whenever he had people working for him, he always wanted them to move up a notch. That s exactly what he did. He had a profound effect on his help in as much as he wanted them to better themselves. He was a people person. He helped many, many people. Mr. Abbatiello was renowned for his acts of kindness, whether it was helping people on the track, providing guidance, or offering simple thoughtful gestures, such as bringing pies for the staff at the SBOANJ office. He also was renowned for an notable fashion accessory --- his cowboy hats. He got a lot of people wearing cowboy hats, Palmer said. He would meet a group of guys every so often for lunch, and they were from all walks of life, and they all got to wearing cowboy hats. He would wear his cowboy hat just about wherever he went. He stuck with his roots. That s the way he lived his whole life, straightforward as could be. He was genuine. Noted Ingrassia, He wasn t born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He started from scratch and whatever he got, he got from hard work. And he was a hard worker. He made his own mark. He was his own man. A man who is missed by many. He was a professional in all aspects of his life, and he carried that all through his life, Palmer said. He was a great guy. It was a real pleasure to spend time with him and work with him and know him.

7 From The Desk Of President Mark Ford Dear Members, It s been a busy spring for our officers, directors and TrotPAC and I m thankful for all the work everyone has done to make our organization and our industry better. We recently attended a meeting at the Meadowlands to discuss the state s ongoing budget process and how to best introduce proposals for new funding into the next budget that would strengthen the horse racing industry as a whole. We are working to secure backing in the Senate and General Assembly and in the future will need our members to contact their state legislators to push for their support. As part of this process we met with State Sen. Vin Gopal, who now represents the district in Monmouth County that includes Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, and Colts Neck and was previously represented by our longtime supporter Jennifer Beck. We believe our meeting with Sen. Gopal was productive and positive. We are preparing visits for Sen. Gopal to Fair Winds Farm, Dr. Patty Hogan s equine medical facility, and the Meadowlands. We also attended fundraisers for Assemblyman Ron Dancer and Sen. Richard Codey, both advocates of the racing industry. Gov. Phil Murphy also attended the fundraiser for Sen. Codey, who himself is a former governor. At the fundraiser for Assemblyman Dancer there was discussion of the bill, introduced earlier this year by Assemblyman Dancer, to eliminate the sales tax on horse stall rentals. An attorney who attended the fundraiser has collected more than 2,000 signatures on a petition supporting the bill. Thank you again to all who have taken time to attend these functions, particularly Bob Boni, Mike Gulotta, Mark Mullen, Al Ochsner, Anthony Perretti, and our lobbying consultant AJ Sabath. In other news, we have extended our contracts with the Meadowlands and Freehold through the end of the year as we await the outcome of the state s budget process. We also are working to find opportunities in the fall or winter to make up race dates lost to the weather, but those efforts will be dependent upon horse availability at that time and approval from the Racing Commission. Please remember to mark your calendars for our annual golf outing, which will be Monday, July 2, at Knob Hill in Manalapan. Note that this is a new location. I appreciate the efforts of directors Julie Miller and Yannick Gingras, who have stepped up and are working hard to make this year s event the best ever. Also ahead are qualifiers for 2-year-olds at Gaitway in June. The SBOANJ and others will sponsor the sessions, including lunch and refreshments for all those in attendance. Our organization also will sponsor events at Gaitway for the Harness Horse Youth Foundation and Christian Harness Horsemen s Association. Finally, if you are doing any spring cleaning and have gentle-used clothing you no longer need, please consider donating the items to our Caretaker Care program. In addition to men s clothing, there is a need for women s and children s clothing. Donations can be dropped off at the SBOANJ office on Route 33 in Manalapan. Thank you to everyone that has already provided clothing and helped make this program a success.
