1 The Showcase Media Guide Cheltenham Racecourse Friday & Saturday, October 21 & 22, 2016 Cheltenham s October meeting, the first of the new season at the Home Of Jump Racing, was renamed The Showcase in 2007 and went into a Friday/Saturday slot for the first time after being run in mid-week previously. It used to clash with British Champions Day, but moved a week later for the first time in The popular two-day meeting, which offers total prize money of 296,000, is the natural starting point for horses returning from their summer breaks and is often used in preparation for The Open (Friday, November 11 - Sunday, November 13 inclusive) at the course. The Saturday card of The Showcase is headlined by two 50,000 handicap chases, both sponsored by Randox Health for the first time. The Randox Handicap Chase (1.50pm) over three miles and a furlong starts the racing action off on the day. Trainer Philip Hobbs has an amazing record, winning five of the nine runnings, notably with Cheltenham specialist Balthazar King who completed a hat-trick in Balthazar King won eight times in all at Cheltenham and gained the biggest victory of his career in the Cross- Country Chase at The Festival in Midnight Chase was successful in the Randox Handicap Chase in The Neil Mulhollandtrained gelding proved to be a real star at Cheltenham throughout the 2010/11 season, also capturing valuable handicaps at The Open and The International in December. He finished that campaign with a fine fifth in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup and recorded a fifth victory at Cheltenham in the 2012 G2 Cotswold Chase. The second 50,000 contest is the Randox Health Handicap Chase (3.30pm) over two miles. Run over half a mile further until 2015, the race served as a trial for the 160,000 feature chase at The Open, the BetVictor Gold Cup. Johns Spirit ( trained by Jonjo O'Neill), Shooting Light ( trained by Martin Pipe) and The Outback Way ( trained by Venetia Williams) won both handicaps. The 35,000 Masterson Holdings Hurdle (3.00pm), inaugurated in 2009 and also run on the Saturday, is a conditions race, providing four-year-olds with an opportunity to compete against their own age group before being pitched into all-age company later in the campaign. The first winner, Starluck, progressed to finish second in G1 Christmas Hurdle and fifth in the G1 Stan James Champion Hurdle at The Festival in The Showcase s final race is the White Christmas Parties at Cheltenham Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race (5.15pm). In 2006, this extended two-mile bumper went to subsequent Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Imperial Commander, while 2014 winner Moon Racer followed up with victory in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at The Festival the following year.

2 The Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (4.05pm, Saturday) is the first in a series of qualifiers for the Pertemps Network Final at The Festival on Thursday, March 16 Day One of The Showcase, Friday, October 21, commences with the 17,000 Neptune Investment Management Novices Hurdle (2.10pm) over two miles and five furlongs, which is the first contest on the Road to Cheltenham series of races that culminates with the G1 Neptune Investment Management Novices Hurdle over the same course and distance at The Festival on Wednesday, March 15, The New One took both races in the 2012/13 season for Gloucestershire trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies and his jockey son Sam. The other races in the Neptune Investment Management Novices Hurdle series take place at Cheltenham on Friday, November 11; Sandown Park on Friday, December 2; Cheltenham on Sunday, January 1, 2017; Warwick on Saturday, January 14, 2017; Cheltenham on Saturday, January 28, The Harrison James & Hardie Maiden Hurdle (4.30pm Friday) has been won by some classy performers, including Snap Tie (2007) who went on to finish third in the Sky Bet Supreme Novices Hurdle at The Festival. More recently, 2012 winner Court Minstrel capped a good novice campaign by landing the G2 Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr, while Lac Fontana (2013) went on to win a G1 at Aintree. Randox Health Food Zone The Randox Health Food Zone, staged for the first time in 2014, returns to The Centaur to demonstrate all that is great about the food and drinks producers of the Cotswolds. The racecourse sits in the heart of the Cotswolds and there are many amazing elements of the region that will be celebrated in the Randox Health Food Zone. Stands include local companies such as Pie and Might Pies, Black Cow Vodka, Simply Seeds and Severn Cider. Charles Owen Pony Racing Series Finals The Pony Racing Racecourse Series, sponsored by Charles Owen, concludes on Saturday, October 22 with finals over seven furlongs (12.15pm, 138cm & under) and nine furlongs (12.45pm, 148cm & under). There have been 27 fixtures this year, starting at Aintree in May, with riders earning points to win a place in the prestigious finals.
