1 The Showcase Media Guide Cheltenham Racecourse, Friday & Saturday, October 23 & 24, 2015 Cheltenham s October meeting, the first of the new season at the Home Of Jump Racing, was renamed The Showcase in 2007 and went into a Friday/Saturday slot for the first time after being run in mid-week previously. This year The Showcase, staged on Friday and Saturday, October 23/24, has been moved a week later to prevent a clash with QIPCO British Champions Day and permit Channel 4 coverage on the second day The popular two-day meeting, which offers total prize money of 296,000, is the natural starting point for horses returning from their summer breaks and is often used in preparation for The Open (Friday, November 13 - Sunday, November 15 inclusive) at the course. The Saturday card of The Showcase is headlined by two 50,000 handicap chases. First up is the winner.co.uk Handicap Chase (2.10pm), which takes place over two miles for the first time in Previously run over half a mile further, the race served as a trial for the 160,000 feature chase at The Open, the Paddy Power Gold. Johns Spirit (2013 (also won at The Showcase in 2014 & was second in the Paddy Power Gold Cup) - trained by Jonjo O Neill), Shooting Light ( trained by Martin Pipe) and The Outback Way ( trained by Venetia Williams) have won both handicap chases. The second 50,000 contest is the winner.co.uk Trophy Handicap Chase (3.20pm) at three miles and a furlong. Trainer Philip Hobbs and owner The Brushmakers have won the last four renewals with Cheltenham specialist Balthazar King, who completed a hat-trick in 2013, and Roalco De Farges last year. Balthazar King, who has won eight times at Cheltenham in total, most recently in November, 2014, will be back in training in December. Midnight Chase was successful in the winner.co.uk Trophy Handicap Chase in The Neil Mulholland-trained gelding proved to be a real star at Cheltenham throughout the 2010/11 season, also capturing valuable handicaps at The Open and The International in December. He finished that campaign with a fine fifth in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup and recorded a fifth victory at Cheltenham in the 2012 Grade Two Argento Chase. The 35,000 Masterson Holdings Hurdle (2.45pm), inaugurated in 2009 and also run on the Saturday, is a conditions race, providing four-year-olds with an opportunity to compete against their own age group before being pitched into all-age company later in the campaign. The first winner, Starluck, progressed to finish fifth in the Grade One Stan James Champion Hurdle at The Festival in 2010, while last year the 2014 JCB Triumph Hurdle winner, Tiger Roll, was successful for Michael O Leary s Gigginstown House Stud and trainer Gordon Elliott. The Showcase s final race is the Cheltenham Club Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race (5.40pm). In 2006, this extended two-mile bumper went to subsequent Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Imperial Commander, while last year s winner Moon Racer followed up with victory in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at The Festival on his next start.

2 Day One of The Showcase, Friday, October 23, commences with the 17,000 Neptune Investment Management Novices Hurdle (2.10pm) over two miles and five furlongs, which is the first contest on the Road to Cheltenham series of races for middle distance novice hurdlers that culminates with the Grade One Neptune Investment Management Novices Hurdle over the same course and distance at The Festival on Wednesday, March 16, The New One took both races in the 2012/13 season for Gloucestershire trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies and his jockey son Sam. The other races in the Neptune Investment Management Novices Hurdle series take place on Friday, November 13, Cheltenham, Friday, December 4, Sandown, Friday, January 1, Cheltenham, Saturday, January 16, Warwick and Saturday, January 30, Cheltenham. The Bet & Watch At winner.co.uk Maiden Hurdle (4.30pm Friday) has been won by some classy performers, including Snap Tie (2007) who went on to finish third in the Sky Bet Supreme Novices Hurdle at The Festival. More recently, 2012 winner Court Minstrel capped a good novice campaign by landing the Grade Two Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr, while Lac Fontana (2013) went on to win a Grade One at Aintree. The Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (3.20pm Friday) is the first of the series of qualifiers for the Pertemps Network Final at The Festival in March. Cheltenham s new grandstand will be officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal on the first day of The Open, Friday, November 13 but some of the new facilities will be open at The Showcase - the Vestey Bar, Annual Members Bar and steps, the Owners & Trainers Bar and The Cotswold Club. The Vestey Bar, situated on the ground floor of the grandstand, is named after Lord Vestey, who was Chairman of Cheltenham Racecourse for 21 years until Annual members will have access to a brand new bar on the first floor, which has its own section of steppings looking on to the racecourse. The second floor of the new grandstand features an Owners & Trainers Bar, with a balcony overlooking the Parade Ring, while The Cotswold Club, located on the same floor, is available to those who have used the A+R boxes which were removed to make way for the new stand. The Royal Box and 11 private boxes situated on the third floor will also be in use during The Showcase. There will be guided tours of the Parade Ring and Weighing Room before racing, as well as various activities and displays about the sport. The Rugby World Cup semi-final, which kicks off at 4pm, will be shown live in The Centaur on the giant HD screen. The Showcase Food and Drink Zone The Showcase Food and Drink Zone sponsored by The Gloucestershire Echo, which was staged for the first time last year, will return to The Centuar to demonstrate all that is great about the food and drinks producers of the Cotswolds. The racecourse sits in the heart of the Cotswolds and there are many amazing elements of the region that will be celebrated in the Showcase Food and Drink Zone. Stands include local companies such as Cotswolds Finest Drinks, Pie and Mighty Pies, Gibson Liqueurs, Alfresco Drinks, Chillies2U, Cotswolds Fudge and Chocolate Tree. There will be the chance to pitch your skills in the omelette challenge. In addition, the zone will also be open on Sunday, October 25.
