Baillieu and Sarah Myer On behalf of all at Yulgilbar, I thank you for your interest in the 2013 Production Sale and extend a warm welcome to you. Since our first sale of Santa Gertrudis cattle in years ago, we have worked hard to improve the herd and the quality of the sale offerings. This year has been a particularly difficult one. The beef cattle industry in Australia has been in crisis, the effects of the live export ban are still being felt but it is encouraging to see the Indonesian Government have lifted the quota from its very low level; the high Australian dollar until recently; droughts & floods & political uncertainty, have been destabilizing for all in the industry. Despite all the above, we at Yulgilbar thanks to Rob & Lorraine Sinnamon and their team are proud to offer in this Catalogue, cattle fully comparable and in many ways better than in the past. The impact of our sire s genetic strengths is clearly evident and gives buyers Welcome the opportunity to secure leading blood lines at good value. Yulgilbar steers continue to win; indicating that we are breeding industry focussed commercially relevant cattle. Most recently we won the 2013 Sydney Royal Beef Challenge, Champion Pen of 6 Steers suitable for the domestic market. Our Sangus breeding program combining the quality of top Angus bulls with pure bred Santa Gertrudis cows, is attracting interest from breeders looking for an attractive alternative. We are proud of our history & look forward to our future. We are honoured that Mr David Warriner, Chairman of the Northern Territory Beef Cattlemen s Association, has agreed to open this Sale. We hope you will enjoy your visit and wish all successful bidders well with their purchases. Sarah Myer July 2013 The Santa Gertrudis National Steer Trophy Page 1

Yulgilbar Santa Gertrudis Stud History 60 years of breeding Santa Gertrudis cattle Yulgilbar Station was founded in 1840 by Edward Ogilvie as a acre sheep station. The run selected comprised the most fertile region of the Clarence River valley; in North Eastern New South Wales encompassing over 80 kilometers of the river. The property was owned by the Ogilvie family until being sold in 1926 to a syndicate of the Morrissey brothers and silent partners Tom Baillieu. Sam Hordern was subsequently invited to join the syndicate, ultimately purchasing Yulgilbar in its entirety in Sam was a foundation director of King Ranch Australia and the first President of the Santa Gertrudis Australia Association. Sam Hordern s daughter, Sarah and husband, Baillieu Myer, inherited Yulgilbar upon Sam s untimely death in Today the property still remains under ownership of Sarah and Baillieu Myer. WHAT S IN A NAME: Yulgilbar means Place of many (or little) fishes. Yulgilbar is a heritage listed property of natural beauty and of environmental significance. Yulgilbar contains much historical infrastructure, dating back to The station is also characterized by its impressive permanent water systems. Yulgilbar was proclaimed a Flora and Fauna reserve in Farming: 2000 acres is farmed growing summer and winter Cash and fodder crops, supplying the feed requirements for the Station. A herd of 5000 Santa Gertrudis cattle are now run on Yulgilbar. Yulgilbar weaner s have long been renowned for their constitution and doing ability and, in particular, their ability to gain weight under favorable conditions. These steers have sold previously from Victoria to central Queensland with excellent results. The first Santa Gertrudis bulls were introduced to Yulgilbar Station in 1953 over Durham Shorthorn type cattle with a Devon influence. 16 King Ranch bulls dominated the early history of Yulgilbar. Other notable sires in the early history of Yulgilbar included bulls from Bolinda vale, sister stud -Elgee Park, Robenlea, Murrumbo, Yarrawonga, Winderadeen, Rosevale, and The Lakes. These bulls all contributed to the development of the stud, along with numerous Station bred sires. Recognized cow lines in the Yulgilbar herd included the Gold family going back to a Glen Prairie cow (Kirkby family). A major expansion of the stud has evolved over the last 10 years. 500 Stud females are currently single sire mated to elite Poll Santa Gertrudis sires. Since 2002, 48 outside bred additional stud sires have been introduced to the Yulgilbar gene pool. A significant addition to Yulgilbar genetics eventuated in 2008 with the landmark purchase of The Lakes Santa Gertrudis stud (owned by the Bolster family). The female portion of this widely recognized and established stud were purchased; marking the merger of these 2 major stud operations. Yulgilbar now stands as the largest Santa Gertrudis stud cattle operation in NSW. Significant AI programs are also conducted utilizing the best available genetics available. An Australian record at auction ($80 000) was paid in 2007 for Warenda Sahara (poll). Page 4

Yulgilbar Santa Gertrudis Stud History The Station and the Stud were managed for many years by the Rogan family. Allan Rogan was manager of Yulgilbar from He was largely responsible for the early success of the stud. The first annual production sale at Yulgilbar was conducted in September These annual production sales continued until the beef crash in These sales comprised the sale of bulls, females, steers and significant numbers of Quarter Horse. Post 1974 Yulgilbar sold on a regular basis at the Summerland Santa Gertrudis sale in Casino. Sam Hordern, King Ranch, and others were also responsible for introducing Quarter Horses to Australia. Today Yulgilbar Quarter Horse stud is run from Elgee Park on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Peter Rogan managed Yulgilbar from Gail and Blythe Richie managed Yulgilbar from Rob and Lorraine Sinnamon joined Yulgilbar in 2002 as the current managers. Yulgilbar believe many breeds of cattle can benefit from the introduction of hybrid vigor through the use of Santa Gertrudis sires. To this end Yulgilbar also breed a number of Santa cows to Angus, Hereford and Charolais to demonstrate the benefit of crossbreeding with Santa Gertrudis. In recent times Yulgilbar has moved to the vertical integration of a significant portion of its product.. Yulgilbar Staff Yulgilbar Station is fortunate to have an excellent team responsible for the management of the operation. Thank you for the contribution made by all these people.. Shows We are proud of our record in recent years exhibiting many stud cattle show champions up and down the East Coast of Australia. We have now consolidated our showing to focus on the commercial reality of our business. We are particularly proud of winning the Santa Gertrudis Australia Association National Steer trophy for the last 7 years. We believe comparison of the end result is important and gives us an indication of how industry relevant our cattle are in the market place. We have made a commercial practice of showing and then selling different steers at each competition. Yulgilbar has been also involved with the NSW D.P.I.; MLA and CRC in recent research and validation work including validation of the Feedlot Calculator, CRC Age to Puberty scanning; and polled verification testing.. 10 Yulgilbar Sangus Diversification of the Bull Breeding Program at Yulgilbar: Yulgilbar, backed by continuing high demand for Sangus females at our annual production sale; has led to retaining a small number of bulls for Private sale in Larger lines available Sangus have been a significant arm in the Commercial Breeding Program at Yulgilbar for the past 10 years. These Composite Poll animals comprise The best of Angus and Santa Gertrudis genetics available. Sangus are flat backed tropically adapted cattle are a blend of two of the most marketable and productive breeds of beef cattle used. Australia Wide Sangus combine the productive traits of fertility and meat quality from Angus; while inheriting the proven performance and versatility of Yulgilbar Santa Gertrudis, in terms of weight gain, disease and parasite tolerance; and superior environmental adaptation. Yulgilbar Sangus Females Yulgilbar Sangus females combine the productive traits of Angus, with the performance, hardiness and maternal characteristics of Santa Gertrudis, making the female an ideal mother! A finer coat than an Angus, more feminine and angular in outlook while maintaining the calving ease of both parent breeds. The males benefit from the hybrid vigour, and selected proven carcass performance of the Yulgilbar breeding program. Page 8

Yulgilbar Sangus Given the huge uptake in popularity of Angus cattle in recent years these Sangus cattle are an option for producers looking to breed black cattle that comply easily with MSA (Meat Standards Australia) compliance. At 19% Bos Indicus, Sangus carry enough Indicus content to adapt to harsher conditions. A sleeker coat and ability to travel, make Sangus a great alternative to Angus, on harder coastal and northern areas. The superior carcass and weight gain of Sangus make them a leading alternative to Brangus and Ultra Black. Yulgilbar Sangus Steers have consistently performed well in Carcass and feedlot competitions underpinning the commercial relevance of these cattle. Page 9

Client Agent Processor Perspective The Cattle EARLY maturing traits, good growth rates and the fact they are bred on tough coastal country and so perform wherever they go has placed Yulgilbar Santa Gertrudis genetics in high demand in recent years. In particular, Yulgilbar bulls are giving crossbreeding weaner specialists in the Northern Rivers area, known as the State s cattle breeding nursery, an edge in terms of presenting robust calves with the hybrid vigour required to be turned around quickly for premium markets. The Agents perspective In fact, a third of the Santa Gertrudis-cross yarding at this year s big two-day autumn George and Fuhrmann weaner sale in Casino were Yulgilbar blood, according to agent Darren Perkins. And that has been the case for the past few years, Mr Perkins said. Yulgilbar genetics have certainly built a reputation for versatility, having the traits like early maturing, good growth rates and good maternal ability that commercial producers want, he said. Fellow Casino agent Allen Ramsey, Ramsey and Bulmer, said the breeding behind today s Yulgilbar cattle and the nutrition and management used at Baryulgil was making for extremely practical bulls with the do-ability that the numerous commercial clients he purchased on behalf of were seeking. The base of the Yulgilbar herd is practical and commercial, he said. We have been buying Yulgilbar cattle for clients from the Upper Clarence, Richmond and Tweed areas and have found as people are seeing the strength of the progeny, interest in Yulgilbar blood is increasing and the repeat custom is strong. The bulls have been used over all types of females and on all types of country with success. Mr Ramsey said the bulls by Warenda Sahara, purchased by Yulgilbar for an Australian record price for a Santa Gertrudis bull of $80,000, were currently creating a lot of interest. More of these bulls will be offered this year. The Meat Processor Perspective On the processing end, one of the largest operators at the Northern Cooperative Meat Company in Casino, Atron Enterprises, say Yulgilbar cattle have become a favourite of theirs due to their first class finish, grading and performance. Atron Enterprises last year turned over $65 million and processes 2500 head to Meat Standards Australia specifications, all over 150kg dead weight per week. Managing director David Larkin said he keenly pursues Yulgilbar cattle and competitively bids on theme where ever he sees them, purchasing several thousand head since his company was set up in Casino three years ago. As a Victorian all my life, I thought I had seen some fantastic cattle, he said. However, Yulgilbar cattle had surpassed his expectations and were true dollar performers, he said. They have very high compliance with our market specs and tick all the boxes for what we are doing, particularly eating quality and yield, he said. I m very interested in Yulgilbar females. From a carcase perspective they are hard to beat. Page 10

Cattle Selection Sid Myer,Graham and Tom Acton with 2012 top price bull Yulgilbar Fitzroy The Buyer perspective Graeme Acton (Acton Land and Cattle Company) Yulgilbar Bulls suit our requirements magnificently. Their uniformity of type, conformation of bone, coupled with being bred on the coastal country all makes for an ideal product. Yulgilbar s commitment to superior genetics further reinforces the above. David Scarrabelotti (Green mountain Pastoral Company) We run a mixed herd of Charbray, Droughtmaster and Brahman cross cows, Page 11 joined to Yulgilbar Santa Gertrudis Bulls. The progeny are always consistent in temperament, confirmation and colour. They do well whether on our Coastal or New England Properties and are suited to all markets. Alan and Sonia Martin (Riverslea Santa Gertrudis) We ve been very happy with our purchases from Yulgilbar. The cows ALL have such terrific temperament and they are producing some tremendous calves for us. A pleasure to have around. Jake and Janie Corner Lindenow Pastoral Company Pty Ltd Hi Rob Just thought we would touch base to say all the Santa/ Angus heifers we purchased at your sale have calved safely with no problems, and the 2 year old and 3 year old heifers are doing extremely well in their new environment at Quirindi. We have been thinking of you and hoping you have not suffered too much in the floods. Yulgilbar is proud to be associated with the achievements of our clients with Yulgilbar genetics. We would love to hear of your successes as they occur as we strive to produce genetics that are commercially relevant whether they occur in the stud cattle arena or the commercial arena. Cattle selection Yulgilbar advocates balanced assessment criteria for cattle selection. This combines visual appraisal for structural soundness, temperament and overall conformation; prudent use of raw measurement data - e.g. frame score, weight, daily weight gain, actual scrotal measurements, eye muscle area and fat scans. Selection of extremes should always be treated with caution. Yulgilbar supports the Santa Gertrudis classification system. Santa Gertrudis group breed plan provides estimates of breeding values that are also of assistance in making choices. Single trait selection for any characteristic is believed to be dangerous and lacks balance in any breeding program. Use of a combination of the many available tools for selection in the industry today is valuable and allows the discerning cattle person to be far more informed about their livestock selections than previously before. Gene star technology (MVP) is also beginning to provide us with some surety of particular prudent gene markers that will assist with meat eating quality and feed efficiency. Identification of such markers is certainly ground breaking and moves the cattle industry forward in terms of technological advances.

Santa Gertrudis Breedplan This Year s Sale Bulls have been tested for the Horn Poll Test (recently developed by Beef CRC and commercialized by Phizer). Results will be available on sale day and on our web site once available. Santa Gertrudis Group Breedplan figures supplied are July 2013 Group run. MVP results will also be available on the web site and supplementary sheet on sale day Fertility All females, stud and commercial are pregnancy tested annually and all empty females are fattened and sold for slaughter Sale bulls are semen tested and soundness evaluated Sale bulls are tested negative for Persistently Infected carriers of Pesti- Virus Herd sires are semen tested annually. 15 EBVs Available in Santa Gertrudis Group BREEDPLAN An animal s breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we will never know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. These estimates are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). In the calculation of EBVs, the performance of individual animals within a contemporary group is directly compared to the average of other animals in that group. A contemporary group consists of animals of the same sex and age class within a herd, run under the same management conditions and treated equally. Indirect comparisons are made between animals reared in different contemporary groups, through the use of pedigree links between the groups. EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait. They are shown as + ive or - ive differences between an individual animal s genetics difference and the genetic base to which the animal is compared. For example, a bull with an EBV of +50 kg for 600- Day Weight is estimated to have genetic merit 50 kg above the breed base of 0 kg. Since the breed base is set to an historical benchmark, the average EBVs of animals in each year drop has changed over time as a result of genetic progress within the breed. The absolute value of any EBV is not critical, but rather the differences in EBVs between animals. Particular animals should be viewed as being above or below breed average for a particular trait. Whilst EBVs provide the best basis for the comparison of the genetic merit of animals reared in different environments and management conditions, they can only be used to compare animals analysed within the same analysis. Consequently, Santa Gertrudis BREEDPLAN EBVs cannot be validly compared with EBVs for any other breed. EBVs are published for a range of traits covering fertility, calving ease, milking ability, growth, and carcase merit. When using EBVs to assist in selection decisions it is important to achieve a balance between the different groups of traits and to place emphasis on those traits that are important to the particular herd, markets and environment. One of the advantages of having a comprehensive range of EBVs is that it is possible to avoid extremes in particular traits and select for animals with balanced overall performance. Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf is at birth. Therefore the like hood of a difficult birth is lower. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for yearling weight. 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV. Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal s milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability. Page 13

EBVs Available in Santa Gertrudis Group BREEDPLAN Selection Indexes Santa Gertrudis selection indexes are calculated for two market specifications, namely, Domestic and Export. These Indexes relate to typical commercial herds targeting these specifications. Indexes are reported as an EBV, in units of relative earning capacity ($ s) for a given market. They reflect both the short-term profit generated by a sire through the sale of his progeny, and the long-term profit generated by his daughters in a sustainable cow herd, if a proportion of heifers are retained for breeding. The Indexes are derived using BreedObject technology. More information on this technology is available from the BreedObject web site. Domestic Production Index ($) Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example self replacing commercial herd (run in a temperate environment) producing steers for the Domestic trade. This Index assumes that the steer progeny are pasture grown and finished and marketed at 500 kg live weight (280 kg HSCW and 12 mm P8 fat depth) at 16 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding. More information is available on the EBV weightings for the Domestic Production Index. Export Production Index ($) Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd (run in a sub-tropical environment) producing steers for the Export trade. This Index assumes that the steer progeny are pasture grown and finished and are marketed at 620 kg live weight (340 kg HSCW and 15 mm P8 fat depth) at 28 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding. More information is available on the EBV weightings for the Export Production Index Note that $Index Values for individual animals are sensitive to the assumptions used in the BreedObject analysis to calculate the relevant selection index. Accuracy (%) is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny analysed. Accuracy is also based on the heritability of the trait and the genetic correlations with other recorded traits. Hence accuracy indicates the confidence level of the EBV. The higher the accuracy value the lower the likelihood of change in the animal s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives. Even though an EBV with a low accuracy may change in the future, it is still the best estimate of an animal s genetic merit for that trait. As more information becomes available, an EBV is just as likely to increase in value, as it is to decrease. Accuracy values range from 0-99%. The following guide is given for interpreting accuracy: Accuracy range Interpretation less than 50% Low accuracy. EBVs are preliminary and could change substantially as more performance information becomes available % Medium accuracy, usually based on the animal s own records and pedigree % Medium-high accuracy. Some progeny information included. EBVs may change with addition of more progeny data. more than 90% High accuracy estimate of the animal s true breeding value. As a rule, animals should be compared on EBVs regardless of accuracy. However, where two animals have similar EBVs the one with higher accuracy could be the safer choice, assuming other factors are equal. (b) A bid for the seller cannot be made unless the auctioneer has, before the commencement of the auction, announced clearly and precisely the number of bids that may be made by us on behalf of the seller. (c) The highest bidder is the purchaser, subject to any reserve price. (d) In the event of a disputed bid, the auctioneer is the sole arbitrator and the auctioneer s decision is final. (e) The auctioneer may refuse to accept any bid that, in the auctioneer s opinion, is not in the best interests of the seller. (f) A bidder is taken to be a principal unless, before bidding, the bidder has given to the auctioneer a copy of a written authority to bid for on behalf of another person. (g) (h) A bid cannot be made or accepted after the fall of the hammer. As soon as practicable after the fall of the hammer the purchaser is to sign the agreement (if any) for sale. Clause 18 (2) The following conditions, in addition to the above, are applicable to and in respect of the sale by auction of residential property or rural land: (a) All bidders must be registered in the Bidders Record and display an identifying number when making a bid. (b) Subject to subclause (2A), the auctioneer may make only one vendor bid at an auction for the sale of residential property or rural land and no other vendor bid may be made by the auctioneer or any other person. (c) Immediately before making a vendor bid the auctioneer must announce that the bid is made on behalf of the seller or announced vendor bid. Clause 18 (2A) the following conditions, in addition to the above, are applicable to and in respect of the sale by auction of co-owned residential property or rural land or the sale of such land by a seller as executor or administrator: (a) More than one vendor bid may be made to purchase the interest of a co-owner (b) (c) (d) A bid by or on behalf of an executor or administrator may be made to purchaser in that capacity. Before the commencement of the auction, the auctioneer must announce that bids to purchase the interest of another co-owner or to purchase as executor or administrator may be made by or on behalf of the seller. Before the commencement of the auction, the auctioneer must announce the bidder registration number of any co-owner, executor or administrator or any person registered to bid on behalf of any co-owner, executor or administrator. Clause 18 (3) The following condition, in addition to subclause (1), is applicable to and in respect of the sale by auction of livestock: The purchaser of livestock must pay the stock and station agent who conducted the auction (or under whom immediate and direct supervision this auction was conducted) or the vendor the full amount of the purchase price: (a) if that amount can reasonably be determined immediately after the fall of the banner before the close of the next business day following the auction, or (b) if that amount cannot reasonably be determined immediately after the fall of the hammer before the close of the next business day following determination of that amount, unless some other time for payment is specified in a written agreement between the purchaser and the agent or the purchaser and the vendor made before the fall of the hammer.
