3 WELCOME WELCOME Welcome to the 2015 Elite Poll Dorset Sale. On offer is one of the highest indexed groups of Poll Dorset rams to be offered in Australia this season. All rams will be penned from 9.30am on sale day. Inspections by appointment prior to the sale in Holbrook. In addition Auctionsplus will be available for interstate buyers. LAMBPRO purchased over half of the Hillcroft Farms Poll Dorset stud in This included the domestic styles of sheep from the flock, with the remaining ewes and commercial client list remaining in Western Australia. This investment cements our position as carcase leaders in the Poll Dorset breed. Consistency is king, and time and time again in our progeny testing we look for sires that breed consistent, high muscling lambs with enough fat for the domestic market. Our breeding program is targeted at highly muscled sheep, with moderate fat and exceptional eating quality. It is no coincidence that a number of the rams rank in the top rams nationally for marbling. We await further DNA results on all rams, as there pedigree s suggest many more of them would rank in the top 50 rams nationally. The fact nearly all the rams have been used in our breeding program is testament to the line- up. The temptation was to keep a dozen of the best sires, but we decided to keep with the Hillcroft Farms policy of selling the best, and using ram lambs moving forward. DIRECTIONS Mt Sturgeon is on the Dunkeld Cavendish Road. It is 2 kilometres from the Hamilton Dunkeld road turn off. SEMEN INTERESTS LAMBPRO is offering possession on all rams but will retain 100% semen interests in every ram offered in the sale. However, if a ram makes over $6000 semen marketing rights goes automatically to the purchaser. If a purchaser wishes to market semen, and the purchase price is less than $6000 the purchaser can nominate at the fall of the hammer to adjust the price, enabling semen marketing rights. LAMBPRO reserves the right to collect semen, at the vendor cost and purchasers convenience in every ram in the sale, irrespective of price for in flock and contract breeding use. 5 LAMBPLAN LAMBPLAN is the national performance recording scheme for meat sheep. As a component of Sheep Genetics Australia. LAMBPLAN uses Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) to describe production traits in simple terms. An ASBV is based on an animal s own performance, plus the performance of all known relatives (sire, dam, half brothers etc) ASBVs adjust for many environmental factors (nutrition etc) which also contribute to an animal s actual performance. ASBVs look beyond an animals own performance to give a measure of the animal s ability to sire superior progeny. By the use of common parents or close relatives to provide linkages between studs across Australia and New Zealand, LAMBPLAN provides accurate flock figures for all participating studs across Australia. We believe this is important as producers can compare the performance of sheep from a number of studs. The traits provided are: Birth Weight (BWT) Estimates the genetic difference in weight between animals at birth. Birth weight is aiming to reduce lambing trouble in lamb production. Remember that the target should be, low birth weight animals without excessive shoulders. Post Weaning Weight (PWWT) Estimates the genetic difference in live weight between animals at 225 days of age (7 months). An important trait for producers who wean their lambs and finish between 4-8 months. Post Weaning Eye Muscle Depth (PEMD) Estimates the genetic difference in eye muscle depth at the C site in a 45kg live weight animal. Important for producers targeting 20-24kg lambs to increase muscle (increased yeild). PEMD will be important for future primal based grading systems for lambs LAMBPLAN combines individual ASBVs for each animal in an endeavour to give lamb producers the best indicator of the genetic merits for their stock. Carcase Plus Index Carcase Plus Index puts 60% emphasis on Post Weaning Growth (225 days), 20% on Post Weaning Fat (45kg) and 20% on Post Weaning Eye Muscle Depth (45kg). LAMB 2020 The LAMB 2020 index has a similar weighting and aims for growth, muscle and fat as the carcase plus index however it also incorporates the traits for birth weight, and worm egg count. The aim being to moderate birth weight and increase worm resistance. Trade Dollar Index The Trade Dollar index is essentially a fat optimisation index. It aims to highlight animals that are more appropriately suited to trade weights. It recognises that the domestic market requires a level of fat to achieve adequate fat cover. Fat Depth (PFAT) Estimates the genetic difference in GR fat depth at 45kg live weight. Important for producers targeting weights from 20-24kg carcase weight to reduce fat depth (increase yield).

7 BUILT FOR BONING ROOMS LAMBPRO makes a significant investment into progeny testing on an annual basis. Receiving bone room data has enabled us to get clarity on the economics of trait selection. The results are simple, high muscled sheep have significantly better carcase value than low muscled sheep. Carcase value is driven by two main cuts, the racks and the loin. These two cuts can be worth up to three times what legs are worth, on a cents a kilogram basis. Increasing eye muscle and subsequently carcase value will position breeders well, for changes in carcase measurement which is currently being trialled in JBS and ALC. In 2014 we progeny tested Hillcroft Farms and the key message was value. The boneless loin s, and racks were significantly heavier than the average lamb in the boning room. This can be up to $12 a carcase at a set weight. We are aiming to get the average ram to +4 and we are doing this while maintaining outstanding marbling. This will provide the lamb industry with more kilograms of easy to sell cuts (racks and loins), and less legs and forequarters as a percentage of overall carcase weight. Done carefully, this will not compromise shoulder and leg structure. Rams like , , and represent the cutting edge of carcase value in the Australian sheep flock, and offers breeders an opportunity to be at the forefront.
