3 Welcome to our 13 th Annual Terminal Sire Sale. Wapiti genetics is efficient venison production and the only way to get surety of chilled carcasses. Our point of difference is we add consistency and constitution with our bulls. These young sires are bred initially for our own use, to provide the venison weaners we finish each year. This year in our finishing business we have been forced to kill 100% of our weaners earlier due to El Nino conditions, and still have averaged 71 carcass before Christmas. These sires have wintered for two years in their age group mobs this year s mob of 80+ animals came through on swedes and silage, and then these sires were drafted from the main group in late December after velveting, with no cereal or PK supplementation. This year again, we are making available a line of sires from another system. We select our top growth rate stags from our 1500 finishing deer, using the weights from weaning until the start of the chill trade. We sort through these, use the top 20 ourselves as spikers and again at 2 years old, and now the best of these are available today in the sale. They have no recorded sire/dam information, but have the constitution and conformation, to breed you venison for the chill trade. We could call these ALFORD FORESTERS, so making them first choice for your venison production. Unfortunately due to a computer/operator error, the weight data from these animals is not available. They were repeatedly selected out as the top growth-rate performers from their group, and despite this lack of numbers to show you, they are excellent animals. Maximise your opportunities with a new sire For new deer farmers, or those who have purchased a sire from us, we offer a few suggestions or general comments that may assist in a successful mating and maximum return on your investment. Good animals are worth looking after! As deer have strong social structures in their groups there will be a degree of stress in taking young stags from their mobs and comfort zone and transporting them to a new environment. This can be minimised with understanding and common sense. Ideally if an animal is transported with a familiar stag from his home he will shift more easily. Sounds like a ploy to increase sales, but multiple animals certainly settle more quickly. If you shift a single animal, relocate them to a small group of preferably lesser aged males ie. spikers or 2yr olds. Failing that, a quiet mob of hinds and fawns is often available for that first introductory period. A paddock where the sire can settle under trees or at least away from major vehicle disturbance is ideal. Our animals are run in large groups, quite extensively, so may take a week or two to settle to an urban environment. Some young elk and wapiti type sires can be intimidated and dominated by smaller but more aggressive older red stags, even in adjoining paddocks, so mating or locating them away from older sires often works best. If you multiple mate your sires we find it is desirable to match stags of equal age or size so that one doesn't dominate for more than one cycle. After the rut in early May our policy when removing Wapiti type sires is to run them into the shed and administer a drench whether they look under parasite stress or not.

4 Recent research by the Elk Wapiti Society of New Zealand, and Invermay has shown drench resistance in some worms, particularly Ostertagia to moxidectin chemicals. Injectable products have greater efficacy, but do not be complacent with your parasite management in deer. Seek advice if you are unsure. As with other deer species, elk and wapiti can suffer from low trace element levels that may not affect sheep and cattle, such as copper, cobalt, zinc, and selenium. Regular soil or animal testing and remedial supplementation is important. Some bloodlines of deer show greater susceptibility to grass staggers. Prevalence of higher endophyte levels in late summer and autumn prior to the rut can ruin your mating program. Feed your sires extra in that early winter period before the real cold sets in, as recovered energy and body mass will assist the worn out stag to recover for velvet growth and the next mating. CONDITIONS OF SALE 1. Sale will be conducted by Whyte Farming Company 2. Intending purchasers are required to register to receive buyer s number and bidding slips. 3. Each lot shall become the property and responsibility of the purchaser when sale end is declared. 4. Terms are cash, unless prior arrangements have been made with Whyte Farming Company. 5. 5 SIRE REFERENCE GG110 One of our highest performing Sire Bulls, GG110 was chosen not only for his outstanding growth, but also for his conformation and constitution. He was the top performer in his year, and is still an outstanding bull. His total progeny average growth was 0.384g/day at the critical September weighing. WY525 A big bull of John Barber wapiti lines, the WY525 offspring never fail to impress. He had the most terminal sire sons in last year s sale of any individual sire. Again this year he is the sire of 4 of the first 6 lots. Jono A bigger bull, we have used him extensively as a terminal sire on the hill. The sires representing him today mostly go back to Tussock dams, one of our past most prolific and hardy sire lines. Tika & Sako Bulls of Tikana bloodlines, these two have impressed from the outset and need no introduction.
