3 Welcome to our 2018 on farm sale at Tikana. The industry is in great heart on both venison and velvet fronts. The extension of the seasonal high venison schedule into the New Year reflects maturity in our market and a welcome change. While the use of Wapiti terminals had enabled farmers to capture that traditional early spring peak this change provides exciting new opportunities. Now instead of killing yearlings as soon as they meet a 55kg target carcass weight to get peak spring schedule, they can be grown out to their potential. On current schedule the extra 10-20kg carcass weight is worth an extra $100 -$200/head. That extra spring growth is not an option unless using Wapiti terminals. Tikana has enjoyed great success in the coveted Rising Star Velvet Competition, having won the Wapiti class every year. Three of those winners have been used as sires at Tikana and this year we are proud to offer for sale two of them undoubtedly star lots of our 2018 sale. Isobar, aside from his tidy 16.4kg Elk Supreme head he currently ranks #3 on the Wapiti Across Herd Sire Summary for the Terminal Index a true all-rounder. Last year s Rising Star winner was Forecaster and we are excited by his first crop of fawns just born. His current WT12eBV of kg would have him #2 for this trait and with a Terminal Index of $37.64 puts him well ahead of the top bull in the most recent official Wapiti Across Herd Sire Summary. The first publication of the Wapiti Sire Summary by DEERSelect in November 2016 was a momentous milestone for the breed but more importantly for the New Zealand deer industry. The progress a commercial deer farmer can make and the extra dollars on offer by selecting sires that suit your farming objective are becoming well documented. All Wapiti breeders involved with DeerSelect have agreed to use a visual colour code to make ebvs and Index interpretation easier and more straight forward. 4 Genetics use them to your best advantage The breeding objectives of your herd need to align with the breeder you buy your genetics from. The progress we are making in those traits that are relevant to you should be your focus. At Tikana we select for:- Temperament zero tolerance for undesirable attitude Conformation eye appraisal for body type, feet and jaw Growth trait in DeerSelect is WT12eBV weight in kg at 12 months old Meat trait in DeerSelect is EMAceBV* eye muscle area in cm2 Terminal Index Growth and meat traits are economically weighted and combined to give a single value in Dollars. Parasite immunity trait in DeerSelect is CARLA10eBV the Antibody response in saliva against parasite challenge. High levels are associated with lower gut worms. Velvet DeerSelect is currently revising their Wapiti Velvet Module and so actual velvet weights are presented in this catalogue *EMAceBV has been shown to be a very powerful trait in deer. Not only does it select for carcass composition a greater proportion of the carcass in the higher value cuts but it also has a high correlation to dressing out percentage, the meat to bone ratio, venison tenderness and venison eating quality (texture, succulence and aroma). The official published Wapiti Across Herd Sire Summary now means the ebvs for growth, meat, terminal index and parasite immunity can be directly compared across Wapiti herds. The Table below shows the percentile bands for growth, meat and the Terminal Index based on the official Wapiti Across Herd Sire Summary run in December To make interpretation straight forward we have colour coded the percentile bands. The darker the colour the better the genetic worth of a bull for any trait/index. 5 The Wapiti Across Herd Sire Summary includes all Wapiti sires used over the last three years whose results qualify based on being adequately robust. Using this sire summary as a reference point we have a summary of the genetic merit of bulls we are offering in this year s sale. Once you know the trait/s that are of most value to your operation then select a bull with the darkest colour for that trait/s. They are an invaluable tool for selection. Please note the ebv values in our catalogue are only comparable to other Wapiti herds. 2yr 3yr 4yr 3

6 Standardisation of Catalogue information A consensus has been agreed to between Wapiti breeders regarding parameters for performance data entered in our sale catalogues. We have all agreed to use standardised weighing times. Growth rates will be based on actual birthdates (or derived from foetal aging), estimated birth weights of 17kg for male calves and 15.5kg for female calves and their 12mth/December weight. Animal Inspection Inspection prior to sale by arrangement with Ben Beadle, or Dave Lawrence. On the day of sale, stock may be viewed from 2.00pm. Velvet Velvet from sale bulls will be on display on sale day and remains the property of the vendor. Tb Status Tikana has a C10 status. We are on triennial testing. Last whole herd test was completed on 15/8/16. Johnes Status All stock on offer have a certified negative blood test for Johnes (Paralisa). Grazing Grazing is available for a limited period, while purchasers await transport arrangements. Any grazing arrangements must be made with PGG Wrightsons office on sale day. All care and no responsibility. All deer must be insured. Insurance Transit and Livestock Insurance can be arranged by the Auctioneers who recommend these insurances to all purchasers. PGG Wrightson Aon Insurance will be available on the day. Guarantee If a bull proves to be sterile, it will be replaced by an animal of similar quality or the purchase price refunded. The guarantee refers specifically to sterility and not to any other condition due to accident or illness. No claims after 12 months of sale. 4

7 CONDITIONS OF SALE 1. The sale will be conducted by PGG Wrightson with the conditions of sale as set down by the New Zealand Stock and Stations Agents Association, a copy of which is exhibited in the office on sale day. 2. Each lot becomes the purchaser s property and risk at the fall of the hammer. 3. Warranties and Insurance are covered under separate headings. 4. Terms are strictly cash unless prior arrangements are made with the auctioneers. Accounts not paid within 14 days of sale shall bear interest, at current rate per annum from the date of sale. 5. The sale is conducted exclusive of GST. 6. A buyers commission of 4% is payable to non-participating companies and recognised independent agents introducing and accompanying purchasers to the sale providing prior arrangements (No later that 24hrs prior to sale) are made with PGG Wrightson. 7. Intending purchasers are required to register with the auctioneers prior to the commencement of the sale. 8.
