4 CURLEW VALLEY SUFFOLKS Welcome to our 2016 ram sale. What a sensational season we are having with a very wet spring now under way. Its a relief after a particularly tough cold winter, which has seen little feed growth until the last few weeks. Some sunny warm days with see feed growing abundantly into a prolonged spring I believe. This will be fantastic for getting terrific growth into sucker lambs. Its great to see that the lamb has stayed strong over the last 12 months and continues to do so with the grid price remaining $5 - $6 kg. The team of rams is quite young this year, with most not having cut their teeth yet. Due to the cold winter, and my policy against pumping rams full of feed which often leads to joint breakdowns and infertility, the rams are a bit behind where I would like to see them. However they have got cracking lambplan data which will enable to you to buy with confidence, knowing these rams will perform. Its important to remember that you are not buying the ram as it stands on the day, but you are buying its genetic potential. A ram purchase should be thought of as buying 'genetics' within a 'mobile delivery system'. The 2016 sale team will see some cracking genetics coming out with the use of top sires. Sons of Willochra feature heavily and no wonder with their sire having an impressive for pwwt. Bowen and Telpara are also having a terrific impact with heavy muscling and positive emd's. A client in the Barossa recently told me they where getting lambs dressing at 24 26kgs at weeks. Its pleasing to know the hard work I've put into selecting growth and muscling is paying dividends for my clients. In the last two seasons a number of pure suffolk lambs have been hitting 20kgs by 21 days of age, and 30kgs at 30 days old! Buying a ram is an investment that can have a significant impact on your lamb production, therefore its important to select a ram that will have maximum impact on your flock. This can be achieved by using ASBV's that target your markets, and by the longevity of the ram. Curlew Valley Suffolk rams tick these boxes, because of these 3 criteria: 1. New stud sires are carefully selected for structural soundness, rapid growth, heavy muscling and trueness to type. 2. Selected to produce lambs that target our current domestic and export markets. 3. Run under tough commercial conditions, to produce a hardy ram, that will thrive their new environment. Stock was shorn in mid August. On 15/8/2015 they where drenched with Triguard and also received a Glanvac 6in1 with B12S. They have a full vaccination history and have had a Gudair and Eryvac vaccine. The flock has a OJD status of MN1 V, with all stock being vaccinated for the past 8 years. They are Brucellosis accredited free. 5 BELMONT SUFFOLKS & BORDER LEICESTERS We are pleased to offer 35 Suffolk Rams and 6 Suffolk ewes, and 20 Border Leicester Flock Rams in this sale, with co-vendor Rachel Chirgwin of Curlew Valley Stud. The ewe base for our Belmont Suffolk Stud, came from Stratford together with 4 ewes from the Southrose and 2 ewes from Burwood studs. We made our debut in the showring at Gawler, winning Champion Ram, and followed this by taking 6 rams to Adelaide Royal, where our exhibits received 1 x 2nd, 1 x 3rd, 2 x 4th and 1 x 6th ribbon. The 3rd and 6th placed rams were in a class of 21 exhibits. These 6 rams are offered in this sale. The 2013 Sydney Royal Reserve Champion Ram, from the Bowen stud at Millthorpe, NSW, is again the predominant sire (25) of our offering, and his progeny group of 3 rams - came 4th in a class of 14 groups. A further 9 rams on offer are from a Burwood stud ewe purchased for $1600 and sired by Allendale 1924/04. Belmont Suffolk rams crossed over merinos at our Keith property, resulted in 126% lambing for this current season. Belmont Border Leicesters were founded in A stud ram, purchased in October 2013 from Coolawang at Mundulla, is the sire of this year s offering, together with a number by Johno s 618/10. Belmont Border Leicester rams have proved themselves in the paddock again this season, with 116% from 460 ewes, including maidens. We wish you every success with your purchases.
