1 NOTES MERINOS FOR PROFIT Breeding Merinos for profit * Merino fleece wool of the highest quality and lowest possible micron * Merino sheep maturing quickly, fertile, easy care, easy shearing and high quality meat * Merino lambs with extra low micron, high value wool, ready for slaughter with a minimum of fuss Breeding Merinos for the future * Productive skins, large frames, sound constitution and rapid early growth rates * Heavy cutting fleeces * Well nourished, bright, stylish, soft handling wools * Productive sheep with minimal production costs Building on a solid foundation Mr. T.A. Murdoch started the Orrie Cowie flock in 1937 with mated Kalabity ewes, selecting animals with open faces, sound backs and nourished heavy cutting fleeces. Average ewe fleece weights increased from 4.3 kg to 5.7kg and yields increased to 60% as dust penetration decreased. His son Mr. Vic Murdoch continued selecting breeding stock with large frames and superior wool quality and cut. He added a draft of mated Brewarrina ewes (low micron, Peppin blood) to the flock. Adult ewe wool cuts increased to 6.8kg and today cutting 9kg of stylish white, super soft-handling fleece of 21µm measuring 130mm in a very good year. The Merino stud was registered in 1965 and the Poll Merino stud registered in In 1999 Vic s son-in-law and daughter, Dennis and Heather Dalla purchased the Orrie Cowie Merino stud and a third of the Poll Merino stud. In 2018 their son, John took over as studmaster. We continue to select Australia s best breeding stock, knowing the value of the Orrie Cowie elite wool qualities in reducing dust penetration, fleece rot and incidence of flystrike. We welcome you to Orrie Cowie s 53 rd Annual Field Day and Ram Auction and invite your inspection. N.B. 2 FLEECE and PRODUCTION MEASUREMENTS EXPLAINED 1. FIBRE DIAMETER (FD) - This is the measurement of the average diameter of 2000 fibres, taken at random from a mid-side sample. Measured in microns (µ) using the latest AWTA approved Laserscan machine. 2. STANDARD DEVIATION (SD) Measures in microns the spread of fibres either side of the mean FD in which 68% (two-thirds) of the fibre lie. The lower the SD the more uniform the wool. 3. COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION (CV) Measures the spread of fibre diameter variation relative to the average fibre diameter of the sample as a percentage. CV can be used to compare wools of different micron averages in terms of fibre distribution. A lower CV is more desirable. The national flock average is 24.7%. 4. COMFORT FACTOR (CF) This is a measurement of the wool fibres in a sample which are less than 30 microns (µ), and expressed as a percentage. 5. FAT Ultrasound measurement of back fat depth in mm. 6. EMD Ultrasound measurement of eye muscle depth in mm giving an indication of carcass quality. The higher the measurement the bigger the eye muscle. 7. BODY WEIGHT (BW) The body weight of the ram measured in kg (using electronic scales), accurate to 0.5kg. Looking for a more involved accountant? 4 STUD MASTERS COMMENTS May I take this opportunity to commend this year s offering to you. Here at Orrie Cowie we are aiming to maintain free-growing, long staple skins to help increase the wool cut of our sires on offer. We are breeding a 21µm average and so most rams on offer measure between 19-22µm, of crimpy white nourished wool. This should help you as woolgrowers to best meet the current market demands for wool. To add to this trend we are always selecting for good big rumps and deep sides, obviously aiming for good-doing ability and better performing lambs. Also at Orrie Cowie we are actively selecting for ability to reproduce by joining for only 35 days and culling out any females with more than one dry season in their lifetime, including not rearing a lamb for whatever reason. Tough, I know but we are actively pushing for better results every year to help you get better returns. Please avail yourselves of this quality line-up, and ask about some of our new and exciting family lines. The top 50 rams in this year s offering are April/May 2017 March shorn with 9 being 2016 drop August shorn and have been shedded out of the worst dust and rain to maintain a cleaner tip and fleece for your appreciation. The rest are April/May 2017 drop, paddock run and May shorn. The rams fleeces were sampled on the 1 st June 2018 for the AWTA tests and 6 th July 2018 for Lazerline tests. Bodyweights were taken 16 th July In the selection of rams for dusty conditions, especially on Yorke Peninsula, obvious nourishment is important to help maintain good yields and quality white fleece wool. White waxy nourishment, soft-handling, bright white fleece wools are the Hallmark of Orrie Cowie bred sheep. May I suggest that considering the unprecedented buoyant state of both the meat and wool markets, if you would like to improve your flock more quickly than normal, or you are breeding a few rams, you may consider the use of semen from Orrie Cowie proven sires. Availability to commercial breeders is totally unrestricted (you can start right at the top if you want) and price by negotiation can be very reasonable. AI is a very good way to improve your flock in just one generation. The top REDWOOD White Suffolk rams will be offered alongside the Merinos with an aim to integrate meat production (either merino or crossbred) using heavy cutting, big frame merino ewes. Please consider these quality rams which have been bred to compliment your merino breeding operation. The rams selected are the top performers of the drop. All have been selected for long well-fleshed bodies and very white, good combing wools. All rams have been weighed and muscle scanned to help with selection. Cut a magnificent, 20kg of wool after Adelaide and having worked several times in that fleece. Certainly, use of semen is highly recommended. Titan 129 an outstanding son of Titan, bred at Orrie Cowie. Trojan the biggest ram ever bred at Orrie Cowie, reaching over 170kg at 26 months, with a pure white waxy fleece measuring only 19µm. He is sired by Promoter 181 (see above). He has bred some incredible progeny wherever his semen has been used.
