3 TELPARA SUFFOLK AND HAMPSHIRE DOWN STUD The stud prefix Telpara Hills has been in the family since 1964, having run South Suffolks, Dorset Downs and Hampshire Downs in past years prior to the family moving into the cattle industry. My return to South Australia lead me back to my roots and the desire to begin breeding sheep again with the Hampshire Down stud being registered in 2005 and the Suffolk stud in Since then we have embarked on a breeding program that has been about understanding who our customer is and then focusing on breeding a type of sheep that meets those needs. As a result the Telpara type sheep, be it Hampshire or Suffolk are known for being thick, meaty, moderate, quiet and easy doing. We aim to produce a ram that is well suited to crossing with big framed South Australian merino ewes, resulting in a quick growing lamb that can be sold straight off the mother. Our rams have moderate mature weights and we rely on good black hard feet on our sheep that don t need trimming and feet and legs built to last. Although we enjoy showing sheep as a family, all sheep are run in contemporary management groups until Feb-Mar each year to ensure we have quality data to submit for lambplan and we have an opportunity to assess the doing ability of all of our rams. Over recent years we have invested heavily in a mix of genetics with an emphasis on the type of sheep we need, this has lead us to having a higher Scottish influence in our Suffolks and a cleaner headed, NZ style Hampshire Down. We are continually acquiring new rams, with rams coming through from studs like Allendale to help further enhance phenotype, and rams from WA studs Glencraig and Lynburn as high lambplan performance sires rams retained for next year s joining will be on display to show where we a heading in our breeding program. Pro-Stock has been an excellent supporter of Telpara rams and has encouraged us to take the leap and hold our first on property auction. We would like to welcome the family of Bundara Downs to the sale who need no introduction and thank them for bringing a quality offering of White rams to help cater for clients who use both black and white rams in their prime lamb operations. We are grateful to the support we have had in the past and look forward to seeing many of clients at the sale. Telpara Basil This ram was used sparingly in his first year but his lambs were outstanding and as a result he has been used over a number of ewes for the 2016 drop.
