2 Stud History Duenclin Border Leicester Stud was started by Dudley and Genny Huxtable with the purchase of Bella-Vista ewes prior to the 1981 mating, with the name being formed from their sons names. Ewes were later purchased from Plymouth, The Oaks and Pethick studs. At the Bella- Vista dispersal in January 1985 Dudley purchased the ram lamb Bella-Vista Duke for the $600 dollar top price, which was very important to the Duenclin stud. In his first drop of lambs, Duenclin Shornwhite was born. He won our first blue ribbon at a Royal Show and later was Champion Ram on numerous occasions at Royals and was the first Border ram to become Supreme Champion All-breeds Ram at Adelaide in Duenclin 1-88 was Reserve Champion All-breeds Ewe in 1990 and Shornwhites daughter was the first Border ewe to become Supreme Champion All-breeds Ewe at Adelaide in Ray Starritt from Kelso wanted to purchase Shornwhite, but we would not sell and settled on a new option, the sale of semen for AI. Permission had to be sought from the British Breeds Society and was granted for the sale of 3 semen packages only and personal use. So began the Kelso Shornwhite line which was their lead line for many years. Over 3 years Duenclin won 11 of the 12 possible Champion and Reserve Rams and Ewes in Adelaide with the 12 th won by Pethick Stud with a ram purchased from Duenclin. By 1995 we became too busy with free range layer hens and ceased showing. We also ceased lambplan scanning for a couple of years which we had begun in 1987 when it was only fat depth, no muscle. This period was when we increased our emphasis on constitution. Ever since, we have allowed our adult ewes to go through a tough patch after weaning and culled the weaker ewes. We re-joined Lambplan in 1997 and showing in 2000 after we were told that an agent had been telling clients that we had sold out. We still believed in treating our sheep relatively commercially and as such were not always as competitive as we could have been on a poor year. We only picked and fed up a show team after scanning. Most others are on feed much earlier. Despite this we were still reasonably successful with lots of ribbons including champions until our retirement from Border Leicester showing in Our concentration has been on breeding the best possible flock rams for our commercial clients, not on breeding the flashy lean style of Border that needs more quality feed. Rams with a story; -Shaun 9 th was used in the Sheep CRC and was found to be at the time a trait leader for BWT and FEC. Started with Border $ Index below 100 & rose to almost 120 after use in 5 studs. -Tristar part of set of triplet rams (used in 9 studs including Duenclin AI). All 3 shown, only realised they were siblings when pedigrees were printed for Hamilton Sheepvention. Champion at Hamilton. Both siblings sold as stud rams, one to Pastoria stud and one to Jackson stud (sire of Jackson New Design). -Bold used in 3 studs. Did not breed as well as he looked. -Nathan passed in on $6000 bid at Horsham sale (weighing in at 129kg). Used in 8 studs AI. -Corker 2 nd , 117kg with 45mm emd at Adelaide Show. Best scan data at show in 2009 by far. -Corker 4 th , 67kg with 39mm emd at 8 mths. -Tristar 7 th , 73kg with 42mm emd at 8 ½ mths. -Thumper , 80.5 kg with 45mm emd at 9 mths of age. Would have been interesting to see what these 3 would have scanned had we still been showing. These 3 rams had muscling like a terminal sire in a maternal. Reasons for Complete Dispersal After 35 years breeding Borders and at almost 72 years of age Dudley wants and needs to retire and the decision was made to try to sell the Kaniva farm to allow this. This meant that the Border stud which could not be run by Clinton on his Mallee farm had to be sold completely including the lambs. Now the farm has been signed up, justifying the decision made early in Being proud of the line of Borders we have bred to be tougher whilst remaining long and meaty, there are mixed feelings about the upcoming dispersal. Sale will be by auction in pens of five or more with no restriction on the number of hammers with the exception of the Stud Rams which will be offered individually. The ram lambs and ewe lambs are not in this catalogue, but there will be approximately 80 to 100 of each offered with supplementary pages on the day. The ewes are in strong condition on a rising plane after late weaning (onto barley stubble and now a combination of saltbush and unharvested barley and oats) on one of our worst feed years in 36 years at Kaniva. The adult ewes were shorn on the 6 th November and the lambs have not been shorn. A memorandum of sires is included on the last couple of pages of the catalogue (lambplan figures opposite this page). There are several Appendix sheep noted in the Catalogue with App next to their tag number. They have been bred up using a Prime SAMM ram with the aim of increasing the robustness of Borders. The average lambplan Border $ Index of the ewes offered are above Border Leicester breed average for their year drop.
