FAUSTO CARBONE ~ I feel very privileged to have just return from my second trip hosting and guiding a small group in remote corner of Africa which hosts just 120 visitors a year.

2 FAUSTO CARBONE ~ I feel very privileged to have just return from my second trip hosting and guiding a small group in remote corner of Africa which hosts just 120 visitors a year. In the 21st century it s not easy to find a destination in Africa that has been virtually untouched by tourism, boast such an abundance of game and, where authentic accommodation represents a bygone era. The destination is Camp Nomade, the National Park, Zakouma, the country, Chad. This is one of Africa's less known destinations, which just 7 years ago, was losing a debilitating war against poaching. The true heroes of the story are the people of this remote south eastern corner of the country. With the help of African Parks (AP), they have achieved what most people thought was unachievable, stopped rampant poaching where 95% of certain species was decimated. Within two years of operation, AP have changed this very dismal picture into one of control and population growth, and, now have plans to reintroduce rhino to the area. Zakouma is a truly fauna-rich park, in a Sudano-Sahelian vegetation zone. In the dry season, the wildlife is lured to this area, where pans and fertile floodplains provide plentiful drinking water and grazing. Regular Safari enthusiasts will be blown away by the unspoiled beauty and abundance, and first time visitors will not realise how truly spoiled they will be to be to have this pristine wilderness experience.

So what is it that made my guests and me fall in love with Zakouma? Primarily it s absolute remoteness and untouched beauty. The abundance of animals and birds.

32 So what is it that made my guests and me fall in love with Zakouma? Primarily it s absolute remoteness and untouched beauty. The abundance of animals and birds. The many different sub-species of animals, new to us, such as Tiang, Lelwels Hartebeest, Western greater kudu, red-fronted gazelle, Buffon s Kob, red-flanked and Grimm s duiker, Central African Savannah buffalo, (an intermediate form between the Nile and West African sub species) and Kordofan Giraffe. The ability of being able to get out of the vehicle to experience the wildlife at close proximity. To go back to the comfortable yet authentic accommodation, bucket showers, long drop toilets and fly sheet tents, this is how safaris were 30 years ago when I first joined the industry in Zimbabwe. Very importantly it's the passion of the people at African Parks, that along with the way the community have embraced this project which is so commendable and encouraging in a time when so much of our biodiversity is being lost. One of the many highlights during my visits to Zakouma was lying on my back in amongst the Vetiveria (adrenalin) grass at sunset waiting for millions and millions of Red billed Queleas, (small seed-eating birds) coming to water before going to their roosting sites. The best way to describe this would be. "a monochromatic, Aurora Borealis in 3D" I invite you to join me on a rare opportunity to experience one of the less travelled and most exciting destinations in Africa. C

The authenticness of the whole safari is a rare find these days. Fausto s ability to complement the sensory experience sights, sound, smell with his depth of knowledge and passion for the ecosystem is what really brings the full experience to life. There are so many layers to the experience the seen and the unseen and the interconnectedness of the animals, plants, insects etc. Fausto you have a magnificent talent for what you do and you interact with each guest individually to enhance the experience. Curious and observant by nature, Fausto learned all that he could in those early years about mammals, insects, birds and astronomy. As a college student, he took a detour into Civil Engineering. Soon after qualifying he switched gears and became a professional guide leading walking and canoeing safaris Thirty years and many adventures later, Fausto continues to lead and guide individuals, families and groups (including National Geographic, universities and professional photographic and television teams) through Southern, East and West Africa and the Congo Basin. He is able to inspire and captivate the imagination of his guests through his knowledge, deep respect for nature and his outstanding interpretative skills. He sees his role as a guide to be multi-faceted: teacher, tracker, conservationist and eye-opener! Equally confident and at ease guiding professional groups or families, Fausto particularly enjoys imparting his knowledge to children on family safaris. He truly believes that knowledgeable kids will be good stewards of the land and will preserve their heritage for future generations. Fausto s knowledge and respect for all facets of the natural world, as well as his unending curiosity, good humour and patience, make him a memorable and inspirational guide.
