1 OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE MAINE BOWHUNTERS ASSOCIATION THE MAINE BOWHUNTER NOVEMBER 2010 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT PRESIDENT S REPORT By Jerome Richard This was a long, dry, hot summer this year! It was so hot I sat in a treestand during the bear season with just a pair of camo jeans, a camo long sleeve t-shirt, and my white sneakers to video a bear on a bait site at 4:30pm with the temperature around 92! I was helping some friends from Mainely Adventures Guide Service out of Houlton, ME with setting up treestands and baiting during this hot season, and I was surprised at the amount of bear activity even in the heat. By the time I left Houlton I must have gained at least 10 pounds from all the great meals at Mainely Adventures. What a great vacation with first class accommodations, meals, riding around in a 6-man Polaris Ranger Crew 800 running baits! Other than the heat, life was good! L.L. Bean Hunting Expo Tina and I had a few more events to do before the bow- hunting season for deer started again with a stop at the L.L. Bean Hunting Expo on the weekend of August 28 th and 29 th. Paul St. John, our MBA Membership Director and John hunt the MBA Vice President covered this event on Saturday while Tina and I covered Sunday. I had a chance to catch up with an old friend John Wood who is an archery equipment representative for Strother Archery. I did get to shoot the new SR-71 bow from Strother, but I need another bow like a hole in the head! I will have to say it was light and fast! Jerome and Tina at the L.L. Bean Hunting Expo John Wood and I met about 20 years ago whitewater kayaking on the upper Kennebec River and the West Branch of the Penobscot River almost every weekend in the summer. Now, I m slowing down and hanging out of treestands! I can tell that father time has not been too good to either one of us as my hair is really graying, John has none, and we both put on some weight (or should I say ballast). Bowhunter Safety Education Tina and I do about six Bowhunter Safety Education classes a year. This year it started out with some small classes and I thought maybe the poor economy was keeping some people from entering the sport of bowhunting. But on September 11 th we got hammered with 92 students at Old Town Archery Center which was the largest class we have done in 13 years as a volunteer instructor. If it had not been for Clint Gaskill, the Regional Safety Coordinator, we would have been in big trouble because I only had enough materials for 40 people. I thought it was kind of great to see that many people wanting to get into bowhunting just as long as they show up in my neck of the woods, right? 3 NOVEMBER P AGE BOW: Becoming An Outdoors Woman in Maine By Tina Richard The Becoming an OutdoorsWoman (BOW) program began in 1991, when it was offered through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The program was created as the result of a study conducted by Professor Christine Thomas, which determined that women preferred to learn hunting, fishing and outdoor skills in a non-competitive atmosphere along with other like-minded women. In Maine (BOW) holds a three-day introductory skills workshop in the fall at Camp Caribou in Winslow. (BOW) also holds Beyond BOW workshops throughout the year in various parts of the state. Beyond BOW workshops provide opportunities for participants to learn additional skills in specific topics. The BOW program here in Maine is sponsored by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and is aimed at women 18 years and older. Tina working with the September 17-19, 2010, I had the opportunity to do an Introduction to Archery and Introduction to Bowhunting. The first two days I had 17 ladies try archery and they fell in love with the sport. They could see that archery is my passion and they learned quickly. We did not have one lost arrow and by the end my ladies were pros. The last day Jerome came and helped me with the Introduction to Bowhunting. I was supposed to have five ladies but some of the ladies I had in the Introduction to Archery wanted to come to my last class so I had 9. The ladies Ladies at BOW listening to the introduction to Bowwere quite impressed with the information that Jerome and I shared, so much so, that at least six of the ladies plan on taking our Bowhunter Safety Class next spring. If any ladies out there would like to come to something like Old Town Archery Center and Pro Shop 300 Main St. Old Town, ME Your Archery Pro-Shop yard indoor shooting lanes 3-D Course and TECHNO-VIDEO HUNTING Call or Visit Today Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Noon til 8:00 PM, Sat. 10:00-5:00, Sun. Noon-5:00 (8:00 am-6:00pm on tournament days) this, I strongly encourage you to try it and you will meet other women who want to learn outdoor activities and meet new friends. Some of the sessions you may be interested in are: ATV workshop, Forest Ecology, Firearms and Range Safety, Introductory to Archery, Introduction to Canoeing, Outdoor Survival, Introduction to Map and Compass, Campfire Cuisine, Wood Crafts, Introduction to Kayaking, Firearms Use and Marksmanship, Introduction to Fly Casting, Advanced GPS, Skeet Shooting and Firearm Maintenance, Bucks and Does, Ropes Course, Woods Wisdom, Landscaping for Wildlife, Intermediate Freshwater Fishing, and Be- yond Band-Aids. BOW works hard to keep the cost to attend the Intro Skills weekend as low as possible and some scholarships are available. The Friends of Maine BOW raise funds annually and offer a scholarship program for qualifying applicants that provides partial funding on a one-time basis. Please think about going next year and if you are interested in getting more information contact Emily Jones at Emily.jones@maine.gov or call her at (207) Hope to see you there.

5 NOVEMBER 2010 P AGE 5 Recovery Packs by Bill Valleau Knox County Rep Tina showing how to use a safety harness I hope everyone is having a fun and successful fall. I am getting my gear ready for the regular archery season, now only a couple of days away. One item, relatively new to my preparation routine, that I have already prepared is my recovery pack. A few years ago, a friend introduced me to the idea of having a separate pack loaded with equipment which would be useful, if not essential, to have when recovering game. A recovery pack is a simple idea, and having one has proven to be very helpful for me. Putting a recovery pack together is straightforward. When selecting your gear bag, keep in mind that camouflage is not necessary as you will not be hunting with this pack, but rather tracking and recovering game. Think of the last time you recovered an animal, and think of the items that either you wish you had with you, or the ones that you had with you, that would have made the recovery easier. I initially added the basic tools needed for getting game out of the woods, then I added the items that would be of assistance, but not necessary, to get the job done. In my recovery pack you would find: a knife, flashlight, rope, large plastic bag(s), rubber gloves, field dressing sleeve length gloves, survey tape, paper towels, flashlight batteries, string, baby wipes, small plastic bags, transportation tags, pen, small first aid kit, a bottle of water, knit hat and camera. All of the items you need can be found at your local Pro Shops of course! And, as a side note, the Pro Shops local to Knox and Kennebec Counties do not currently have any events planned for the fall. Good luck this season and I hope you get to use your recovery pack! Jerome giving a tree stand seminar

6 PAGE 6 How Does Maine Compare to Other States and What Does It Mean To You as a Hunter By The Environmentalist Hunter John H. Hunt THE MAINE BOWHUNTER I love deer hunting, and have never killed a deer outside the state of Maine, but I am amazed at what the statistics tell us about how we compare to other states. I thought this information might be interesting to many readers. I took the time to do some web browsing and checked out the 2009 deer harvest totals for a number of states to compare with Maine s deer harvest. Many things do have to be taken into consideration when looking at these numbers, such as this past year being a dismally low harvest for Maine. Still, on average, we only kill about 28,000 deer in Maine in a year. Many of the states listed below harvest more deer than what even exist in Maine. Of course, when you compare us to the other nearby New England states, we don t fare too badly, except that we are larger than all three of those states put together. For reference, Maine and Virginia are very close to the same size. Notice also that many of the states are northern states. Winter is a limiting factor for deer populations in Maine. Therefore I ve included states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota (the northern most states of the lower 48). Maine 18,045 New Hampshire 10,290 Massachusetts 10,381 Vermont 15,237 Illinois 99,419 Virginia 256,512 Missouri 299,461 Ohio 248,515 Minnesota 194,178 Wisconsin 329,103 Michigan 214,973 Now, many people say we don t have a lot of deer, but we have big deer. I picked a state I couldn't find a total harvest for, just to get a little more information. I found some statistics on Kansas deer. They have many deer that exceed 200 pounds dressed weight, and check out how their antlers score on the Boone and Crocket scale. Note: Kansas doesn't even come close to the state of Iowa when it comes to the number of B/C bucks taken. I went to the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks and checked out some of the top scoring deer over the past 24 years 20 non-typical archery kills scored between 219 0/8 and 265 7/8 20 non-typical firearm kills scored between 226 4/8 and 280 4/8 I don t know how many more were killed that exceeded a score of 200, but in Maine, we have no record of an archer EVER registering a deer that scored over 200. The best ever archery killed deer scored 181 2/8 The best scoring firearm deer ever registered in Maine scored 262 6/8 and was killed in the year One hundred years ago! Another one was killed 50 years ago that scored 241 6/8. What does this mean to you if you re a Maine hunter? Well, it all depends on what s important to you, and what your expectations are. If you expect to go into the Maine woods and kill a Boone and Crocket buck with your bow, then your expectations are extremely high, and are probably very unrealistic. It can happen but... the odds are very much against you. In Maine, on average, if you bow hunt, you will kill one deer about every 20 years! And that includes does and fawns. In Maine, any deer taken legally with a bow is a trophy. Carry a firearm into the woods and you increase you odds greatly. You ll kill one deer about every 7 years. As far as Quality Deer Management goes, a quality deer is one you manage to put in the freezer. Wherever you hunt, you have to adjust your expectations to the reality of the situation. If you are a trophy hunter in Maine, don t expect to bag a fist full of B/C bucks in your lifetime. Booners are few and far between here in Maine, although we are the top Boone and Crockett state in New England. Remember, that a permanent book Booner has to score 170 points as a typical and 195 as a nontypical. If you manage to kill more than one deer in Maine that scores over 140 gross points, then you are probably one of the best trophy hunters in the state, or damn lucky. What about Pope and Young, the archery record book? Out of 43 states that have nontypical Pope and Young entries, Maine comes in 38th. Out of 36 states that have typical Pope and Young entries, Maine comes in 33rd. I think hunting shows on television have set people up for unrealistic expectations. Many of the shows are done in the midwest on managed properties that have potential far beyond what the average hunter has access to. It has also turned hunting into an industry. One that is limited to those individuals who can afford to dish out many thousands of dollars to hunt these monster deer. When it comes to these huge deer you see on television, there is a much closer relationship to the size of a hunter s bank account and the the size of the deer he kills, than there is to a hunter s skill. Boy, I m glad I m not a trophy hunter, and that I just love hunting.`

7 NOVEMBER 2010 P AGE 7 Colorado Archery Elk Hunt 2010 By Perry Hatch Lincoln County Rep For several years an archery elk hunt in Colorado has been on my list of things to do. While I have hunted every year in the west somewhere, I always had somewhere else to be. This year a Colorado elk hunt was going to happen. I have been saving preference points for several years and didn t want to use them this year, so I had to hunt in one of the unlimited over the counter units. I knew where I was going to go from a rifle deer hunt I had taken in While deer hunting I had found an area with abundant elk sign. I could hope the elk would be there again this year. I arrived in Colorado on August 25th after finishing a successful rifle antelope hunt in Nevada. I set up my camp at 11,270 feet and spent the afternoon getting things ready. The season didn t open until August 28th so I had a couple of days to kill. I got up the following morning to a heavy frost and hiked up and over an 11,800 foot ridge with my treestand. As luck would have it the area I was planning to hunt had several fresh wallows. I placed my treestand in the best spot available and hiked back to camp. The distance from the wallows to my camp was one mile and I knew I would be able to pack out an elk, if I was lucky, before it could spoil. I then spent a couple days around camp resting, shooting my bow, and taking photos. When opening day came to a close, I had seen one 5X5 bull but he came no closer than 75 yards. The second day came and went with three more bulls seen including a 6X6 but they came no closer to the wallows than 100 yards. While seeing the bulls kept my spirits up, it was also very frustrating. On day number three the weather was again great and things got a little more interesting. I watched two bulls work their way towards the wallows before stopping about 75 yards out. I watched a third bull, a nice 6X6, work his way towards me from 600 yards away. He finally stopped at one of the wallows only 43 yards from me and began to work the mud over with his antlers. The bull was facing me presenting no chance at a shot. I continued to wait when the wind swirled and the bull got a quick sniff of something he didn t like. He trotted a short distance while I drew my bow. He stopped giving me a chance at a broadside shot. The shot was 53 yards, longer than I was hoping for, but one I felt comfortable with. The arrow flew true until it ran out of steam and buried itself into the ground under the bull s chest. Needless to say that was the last time I saw that bull. The fresh sign at the wallows began to get old and I took a more aggressive approach. Hiking further and higher everyday. I was still seeing bulls everyday but wasn t getting any shot opportunities. On the sixth day I saw two 4X3 bulls a good 800 yards away at the timberline. While I had heard no bugling I Perrys Camp decided my only chance was to try a cow call. I could hardly believe my luck when both bulls began working towards me as I continued to use the cow call. In no time at all they were close. I had backed into a small clump of trees and ranged several rocks in the area. One of the bulls was starting to step into my shooting lane at 26 yards. I tried to slowly draw my bow but hunting from the ground can be very difficult. I never completed the draw before being spotted. Both bulls ran a short distance away and then walked back and forth in front of me at 70 yards for the next 15 minutes trying to figure out what was hiding in the trees. After seven days of hunting and two plus days of scouting at elevations ranging from 11,270 feet to just under 13,000 feet my body was done. I packed my treestand back to camp and then packed the truck for the next part of my trip. I had a Wyoming antelope tag in my pocket and knew it was time to head north towards Wyoming. Overall I would say that my elk hunt was a complete success. While I never did tag an elk I hunted an unlimited over the counter unit and saw legal bulls everyday. There is no doubt about it...someday I will be back.
