1 OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE MAINE BOWHUNTERS ASSOCIATION THE MAINE BOWHUNTER JULY 2010 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT PRESIDENT S REPORT UPCOMING EVENTS By Jerome Richard We have definitely been experiencing an early, hot, dry spring! It gave me plenty of time to turkey hunt, but I m finding out that turkeys are quick learners. Tina and I both got one turkey a piece in the first week which was great, but I have spent the last 4 weeks just hoping to find another turkey, even a deaf, dumb, and blind Jake would be good at this point! I m so sleep deprived and grumpy that I m surprised Tina puts up with me. The good news is she stopped asking me when I came home if I got another turkey. Since the last newsletter there have been many events including the Annual MBA Banquet, MBA Election of Officers, bowhunter safety education classes starting up, and a memorial 3-D archery shoot for Paul Caron. Annual MBA Banquet The MBA held their annual banquet on April 24 th in Augusta at the Calumet Club. Everybody had a blast and I know the food was great! We dedicated this banquet to the late Mark Peeler who had also donated his archery equipment to the MBA in his last wishes. Mark s other half Kathy Whalen, and Mark s sister and brother-in-law, Mary Grace and Richard Sirois, attended the banquet. The officers of the MBA had determined that we would like to raise funds to send kids to the Bryant Pond 4-H Camp in the memory of Mark Peeler. We are happy to let everyone know that we sponsored 10 kids this year to go to the camp in honor of Mark Peeler. I was overwhelmed with the support of our MBA membership, local archery shops, and other vendors that donated so many items for this year s banquet. We auctioned off 8 youth bows (all new and some complete archery packages), I don t how many dozens of carbon arrows, a spring bear hunt in New Brunswick, a boar hunt, sea fishing trip off the coast of Maine, we had modern and traditional archery equipment donated, fly fishing equipment, treestands, jewelry, electronic devices including a TiVo, you name it we had it. I can t express enough to everyone who donated that I really appreciate your support. I want to especially thank Deputy Commissioner Paul Jacques for being our auctioneer for the banquet. Hopefully I can keep Paul coming back after his present term ends with IF&W. Paul has been a great asset to many sportsman s, but he has also always been someone I could ask for help on a situation. I might not like what he has to say sometimes, but I truly respected his wisdom. Whoever is elected governor this coming year I hope they will keep Paul around for the knowledge this guy has. Our MBA Supporter of the Year went to Susanne Hamilton and her dog Buster. These two made a great team last year in helping bowhunters find deer. If you ever need her tracking services, please call her at Susanne and Buster are members of the United Blood (Continued on page 2) July Poke and Hope Rendezcous, Durham Rod and Gun July 17-Bowhunter Safety Class, Old Town Archery Center Aug.14-Maine Wildlife Park, NASP Event, Gray, Me Aug. 22-Maine Traditional Championship, Durham Rod & Gun Sept Maine Trappers Rendezvous, NASP Event, Sidney, Me Sept BOW, NASP Event Winslow, Me INSIDE THIS ISSUE: PRES. The MBA Director of the Year went to Jeff Hopkins who many of you know has dedicated a lot of time to the MBA over the years including serving as our MBA president for 4 years not too long ago. The MBA County Representative of the Year went to Bob Walker who covers Somerset County. Bob has pitched in many ways over the last few years and has worked with many of the archery distributors to help the MBA receive donations and get people signed up as members. The MBA Bowhunter of the Year award went to Russell Corson. Many of you may remember Russell from the sportsman s shows, Somerset Bowhunters Association, and possibly the bowhunter safety education classes. I know over the past couple of years Russell has worked every possible NASP event including the sportsman s shows from Augusta to Presque Isle. He also puts on about 4 bowhunter safety education classes a year, as well as, works at the Somerset Bowhunters Association with 3-D archery shoots. If it has anything to do with archery you will usually find Russell close by! At this year s banquet we received 125 big game stat sheets from 52 individuals which is fantastic. There were so many stat sheets that if someone harvested more than one big game animal we grouped all of their certificates in one package. A quick rundown on the stat sheets: 31 bucks, 59 does, 10 bears, and 21 turkeys also with a wild boar, Maine moose, an elk, and a mule deer. The average shot distance in every category was 15 yards which I think is great. Just in case you are interested the largest in-state buck was harvested by Jess Hartford just over 180#-10 point buck. Jess and her husband Tom own Central Maine Archery in Auburn, ME. Wayne Plummer harvested the largest black bear and Mike Herbert harvested a giant Maine moose with his bow. As usual Brad Magoon took some of the largest big game animals in 3 categories. I need to hang out more with Brad to learn the ropes! MBA Election of Officers The Maine Bowhunters Association had their annual election of officers on Sunday, May 16 th at 9:00am at the Augusta City Center. It s official you guys are stuck with me again for another year as your president! This will be my fourth year as president of the MBA. Maybe I will last longer than Obama? Just kidding! John Hunt was elected as our vice president, Dan Long as our secretary, and Tina Richard as our Treasurer. Deanna Page stepped up to the bat as our 2 nd Director-at-Large and Jeff Hopkins was elected as our 1 st Director-at-Large. And for everyone who has enjoyed the big improvements to our MBA newsletter, Lori Weaver has stayed on as our Editor! And Paul St. John is staying on as our membership director and web master. We also had two people step up to become MBA County Representative such as Perry Hatch for Lincoln County taking over for Mark Peeler. Also, William Valleau has volunteered to become one of our valued county reps this year for part of Kennebec County and Knox County. The MBA has been blessed to have such talented people working in the many areas of the MBA. Without these ladies and gentlemen I would be a basket case by now. This team has helped with every aspect of the MBA from membership, website, newsletter, legislative meetings, NASP, the MBA banquet, and the sportsman s shows. It s amazing how much gets done by an all volunteer team of bowhunters. Old Town Archery Center 3 -D Shoots Old Town Archery Center had their 1 st Annual Paul Caron memorial 3-D Shoot on Sunday, May 30 th with registration starting at 8:00am. Some of you are familiar with Paul who helped out a lot at Old Town Archery Center, the bowhunter safety classes, and the MBA Marsh Island BLIP. Paul passed away a few days after the 2009 Marsh Island BLIP hunt. Paul was a veteran of the Korean War. The weather for this event could not have been better. Nice, warm, sunny day with a little bit of a breeze. Tina and I ended our first 30 shot round with a great pig roast and bean hole beans plus some desert! I don t know the head count that day, but I would estimate 40 to 50 shooters showed up. Tina and I actually brought our recurve bows for this shoot and we only managed to lose one arrow between the two of us. 3 JULY 2010 PAGE 3 (Continued from page 2) job of putting this event on and I know they had a lot of help from Bob s brother too. Bowhunter Safety Education I thought I would end my message with something kind of funny, if it were not so serious. I just completed putting on another bowhunter safety education class in May and it has to be the first time in my 12+ years as a volunteer safety instructor that I had a want-to-be bowhunter who truly believed that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) was not a radical anti-hunting organization. The guy went so far as to write IF&W and complain that I was misinformed and didn t know what I was talking about. Of course IF&W called me to let me know about the complaint and after a lot of laughter, we realized that some people out there don t have enough walk around common sense, and even worse, they vote on stuff they probably don t investigate or research much. I challenge anyone to prove me wrong about the HSUS and their anti-hunting agenda. The U.S. Sportsman s Alliance, which the MBA is a member, receives electronic newsletters and printed documents about HSUS. We also get information on anti-hunting organizations through other organizations such as HumaneWatch.org. The latest one included the 2008 IRS Form 990 submitted by HSUS. This is an example of why people should investigate any organization before giving a donation or believing their propaganda. The information found below can be verified by going to and the IRS. In 2008, the Humane Society of the United States had an oper- ating budget of $99,664, (that over $99 million). According to Humanewatch.org only about $452, could be found on the Form 990 that was donated to hands-on dog and cat shelters! That is less than ½ of 1%! What happened to the rest of the money you may ask. Well let s look at salaries and pensions of the officers and other employees. Wayne Pacelle, Pres. And CEO of HSUS total compensation was over $250, (1/4 of a million dollars), 4 other officers were paid over $200,000.00, 4 more made over $150,000.00, 3 more officers made over $130,000.00, and many others made over $100, I added up 20 people on Part VII that were officers and office administration and the total salaries and compensation was just over $2.9 million. Total expenses for salaries, compensation, and benefits was over $37.79 million according to their 2008 Form 990 Part I, Line 15. So when you see their advertisements about send us $19 a month to help dogs and cats at shelters, who do you think is getting their money first? I have to ask does this organization exist to help animal shelters or raise money for people s salaries? I try to tell people if you want to help animal shelters then do it locally because HSUS has another agenda and it is not about helping your local animal shelter. A quick check of the legislation that this group gets introduced in some states will tell you all you need to know about their anti-hunting agenda. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it must be a duck? The 8-Point Buck That had No Horns By John Hunt Jr. When my son was only 11 years old, I had the rare thrill of watching him skillfully kill a 209 pound 8 point buck. It was extremely exciting, and to this day, my heart races when I recall the experience. Of course I told everyone that my son shot a buck that got him into the "biggest bucks in Maine Club." One person asked me a question I probably should've just let slide. He asked, "How big were its horns?" I told him it didn't have any horns. He gave me a perplexed look. I told him it was an 8 point buck, but it didn't have any horns. That seemed to confuse him even more. Then I told him that deer don't have horns, they have antlers. I know it may seem a bit petty, but it does bother me just a little when I listen to these "pro hunters" on television hunting shows talk about the size of the "horns" on the deer they shoot. I believe we should respect the game animals we hunt, and a part of that respect is to know as much as we can about them. Not knowing the basics like the difference between antlers and horns shows a little lack of respect for the game we love to hunt. And, for the so called "pros" to perpetuate this is a little disturbing. Horns and antlers are very different appendages. Horns are mostly dead (with just an inner core of living tissue), while antlers (through all of their growth phase) are living tissue. Horns are made up primarily of a substance called keratin, the substance your finger nails are made of, and various proteins. Antlers are full of blood vessels and even nerves, with lots of calcium. Antlers are shed every year, while horns stay on an animal's skull, and continue to be added to each year. Pronghorns are somewhat unique, in that they shed the outer layer of their horns annually, and retain the inner core. Actually, pronghorns do not have (Continued on page 4) Old Town Archery Center and Pro Shop 300 Main St. Old Town, ME Your Archery Pro-Shop yard indoor shooting lanes 3-D Course and TECHNO-VIDEO HUNTING Call or Visit Today Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Noon til 8:00

4 PAGE 4 (Continued from page 3) "true" horns. Horns are much like finger nails, and hooves in their makeup, and antlers are much like living, growing bones. Because of these many differences, horns tend to grow very slowly over many years, while antlers grow, comparatively, very rapidly. Think about it, that huge racked buck taken by an archer in October, had basically nothing in May. It only had 4 or 5 months to grow its impressive head gear. As a matter of fact, antlers can grow as much as 1 cm per day! Animals with horns aren't even in the same family as animals with antlers. Horns exist on the family of animals called Bovidae. Antlers belong to the family of animals called Cervidae. The most that horns and antlers have in common is a functional one. That is, for the purpose of mating. Evolutionar- ily, horns and antlers are analogous structures. This means they evolved independently rather than from the same structures in a common ancestor. Other examples of analogous structures would be wings. They can be found on insects, bats, and birds. These organisms don't share a close common ancestor, and upon close inspection you can tell that they are vastly different tissue types. Homologous structures, on the other hand, tend to derive from a common ancestor and, over time, may actually develop somewhat varying functions, such as arms on humans and flippers that are found on seals, whales, etc. (quite similar tissue types). When carefully compared, arms and flippers have as much in common as horns and antlers, if not more. So..., the next time you hear someone call antlers horns, ask them to show you how big those horns are by spreading their flippers apart. 5 JULY 2010 The Abuse of Landowners By Deanna Page PAGE 5 Well, here I go again. I m on my soapbox, and on this subject there really shouldn t be an issue. Why is it that people can not respect landowners that allow public access to their lands? Every time I turn around these days, all I see is evidence of landowner abuse. It s really sad that all the people that abuse the land are going to eventually ruin any future land use for the rest of us and future generations to come. I have a lease on some paper company land and this Spring I spent my day off from work on Patriots Day picking up messes that other people have left behind. There were several illegal camping spots on the land that people have continued to use over the years despite signs placed by landowners. I find it hard to believe there are that many people around that can t read, or have gone blind! What part of Kindle No Fires in this Area don t people understand? Or what about, Camping in designated camping areas only, yet there is a fire pit. Then we have the ATV use, why can t people just stay on marked trails? There are 100 miles of designed ATV trails in the area, but yet, people seem to always want travel on the roads that are marked with NO ATV s signs? Not to mention all the signs that disappear all by themselves? The way I figure it, there must be a Bigfoot in the area that eats the signs, why else would they always get taken off the trees, even when they are 12 to 15 feet off the ground? Well, maybe I am preaching to the choir here, but maybe if we all do our share to make a difference when it comes to landowner abuse, maybe we can tip the table in our favor. I have enclosed some photographs that speak volumes on the subject, so I ll get down off my soapbox and let the photos talk. Thank you for reading. ABOVE: Kindle no fires sign with firepit in the background, note stripped bard from tree. BELOW: Firepit full of trash. LEFT: No ATV sign, with an ATV seen within a 1/2 mile to it. 6 PAGE 6 Update on LD1536 ATV Stops on Private Property Legislative Report By Jerome Richard THE MAINE BOWHUNTER LD 1536 passed the Maine House of Representatives with an amendment, but it failed to pass the Maine Senate. If you look at the voting record you will see it is split down party lines with the Democrats voting against the bill. Now there is a move by several large and small landowners to post their property as No Trespassing which could affect hunters and snowmobilers too. The history of this controversy is full of missteps. As some of you may remember from the Governor s ATV Task Force came up with a lot of recommendations with the help of many small and large landowners which were then developed and made into law to help resident and non-resident ATV riders gain access to private property to develop an ATV trail system. Everything worked out great for the landowner and the land user (the ATV rider). We have gone several years now and everybody seemed to be enjoying the outdoors and the trail system with no controversy. Then a lawyer in Aroostook County got busted for operating an ATV while drunk. This issue led to a legal challenge that made it all the way to the Maine Supreme Court. Before the courts were allowed to make a ruling, Rep. John Martin (D Eagle Lake) helped introduce bill LD 308 that would change the existing law to make it harder for the game wardens to do their job and prevent them from meeting the recommendations of the Governor s ATV Task Force which was in opposition to what the landowners wanted. The bill passed and became law where a game warden could not stop an ATV rider without reasonable and articulable suspicion to believe that a violation of the law has taken place or is taking place. LD 308 addresses ATV s, but snowmobiles and boats can be stopped without the same level of reasonable and articulable suspicion. If Rep. John Martin had waited on the Maine Supreme Court to make a ruling on the legal challenge, then LD 308 would not have been an issue because the court did determine that the game wardens do have the right to stop ATV s under the existing law which came out of the Governor s ATV Task Force. However, now it becomes a problem because Rep. John Martin s new law is in opposition to the ruling and the new law controls. Now Rep. Ralph Sarty (R Denmark) introduces LD 1536 that was a bill to restore everything back to the original law and everybody from ATV s, snowmobiles, and boats would fall under the same law plus keep the landowners happy knowing that the game wardens could manage the trail system. Small Woodlot Owners Association of Maine (SWOAM), Maine Forest Products Counsel (MFPC), and Maine Farm Bureau (MFB) all supported LD 1536 and are representative of most large landowners that we depend on to recreate whether it be hunting, ATV, snowmobiles, etc. The common excuse used by people at the state house was LD 1536 violated peoples 4 th Amendment rights which is crazy. The Maine Supreme Court had already ruled that the stops were legal. Some called it the Game Warden s Bill when actually the bill was introduced by landowner groups. This bill would have righted the wrong done by LD 308 and restore the law as it used to exist under the Governor s ATV Task Force. Remember, being on someone else s land is a privilege, not a right. Hunting is also a privilege that is not protected by the 2 nd Amendment either. When you get into an argument over rights and you don t own the land, then you will be standing on the outside of the posted property wondering what happened to the lost access! To boil it down with the defeat of LD 1536 this is what is going to happen. 1. It placed the rights of drunken operators, drug users, and poachers above the public safety of law abiding citizens. 2. It helped destroy another segment of the Maine economy called Tourism. When Maine landowners start posting their property and shutting down established ATV and snowmobile trails, then people will travel to other places such as Vermont, New Hampshire, and Canada to recreate. What impact will that have on local businesses including ATV and snowmobile dealers too? When the trail system becomes too fragmented then they will travel to other states along with their money. 3. It reduced funding to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. When people get frustrated with lack of access caused by the defeat of LD 1536, then less people will be purchasing less licenses and registrations which will then lead to less revenue to support MDIF&W. This could lead to more reductions at MDIF&W or higher fees for the licenses and registrations. Many Maine sportsmen were already worried about consolidation of the 4 natural resources agencies, but apparently the politicians can t see the forest for the trees. According to Dan Mitchell, Executive Director of ATV Maine, it is now in the hands of their group to get another bill introduced during the next legislative session to correct the problem. Tom Doak of SWOAM has said that they are done with this issue and plan to resolve the issue by the posting of land whether it be SWOAM members or landowner groups. Personally I think this whole issue has sent a red flag to large landowners like Seven Islands, North Maine Woods, Plum Creek, and many others to consider no future trails of any kind (ATV or snowmobiles) on their land. It s a shame that we waste time trying to correct the problem with another legislative session. We can only hope everyone at the state house comes to their senses and does what is right.

8 PAGE 8 Bryant Pond 4-H and Learning Center s 5th Annual Youth Field Day and Open Center By Tina Richard PHOTOS FROM BRYANT POND YOUTH DAY. THE MAINE BOWHUNTER Jerome and I left our house at 7:00 am Saturday morning Jun. 5 th to head to the 5 th Annual Youth and Field Day at Bryant Pond 4-H Camp. It was raining cats and dogs when we left and we were not sure if they would still be holding some events. We got there at 8:30 am and it was still raining but not as hard. We told them we were not going to shoot in the rain so they set us up in the rifle range for 11:00 am. Jerome and I started to do what we do best and that was teaching the kids how to shoot bow and arrows. We had about 50 kids come through and every kid was thrilled that they tried that event. We heard the kids say they knew what they wanted for their birthday or Christmas and that was a bow. Some of the other activities the kids could try were the rifle range, the shotgun range, back yard bass fishing, project wild, Maine Warden Service K-9 Demo, and fly tying. There was kids everywhere trying something they had never done before which was great and they left knowing that there was an activity they could do for life. Jerome and I left at 4:00 pm and we were on cloud nine because of how the day went which was perfect. This was our third year at being at a field day and this was our best one. The kids had fun and Jerome and I were able to teach our passion.
