1 San Francisco, CA Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty SENIOR DIRECTOR OF PHILANTHROPY The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the nation s largest and most effective animal protection organization. Since 1954, The HSUS has been fighting for the protection of all animals through advocacy, education and hands-on programs. The organization rescues and cares for tens of thousands of animals each year, but its primary mission is to prevent cruelty before it occurs. The HSUS is there for all animals, across America and around the world: celebrating animals and confronting cruelty. Under the visionary leadership of President & CEO Wayne Pacelle, and with the dynamic support of the Board of Directors, HSUS has grown to be the nation's largest animal protection organization, with an annual revenue of $180 million and assets of more than $200 million. The organization is the 155th largest charity in the United States. HSUS now seeks an ambitious fundraising leader to serve as the Senior Director of Philanthropy in the San Francisco office. He or she will play an important role in the organization s growth and achievements. As a front-line fundraiser, the Senior Director will be responsible for planning creative, strategic, and engaging interactions with many of the organization s major donors and prospects. From the research and identification stages, through the stewardship and renewal of gifts, the Senior Director will manage the ongoing relationships of approximately 150 donors. An accomplished development professional, the Senior Director will be capable of gaining the confidences of the organization s most esteemed prospects and transforming them into loyal, high-level donors. As a representative of HSUS, the Senior Director will articulate the priorities and initiatives of the organization, highlight its past successes, and create a sense of shared goals and values. The Senior Director will be an adept communicator, skillfully reaching and motivating the diverse constituencies represented in the organization s executive leadership, staff, volunteers, donors, and prospects. He or she will ensure the use of best fundraising practices, so that donors feel the genuine appreciation of the HSUS community. He or she will report to the Deputy Director of Philanthropy and will work closely with all members of the philanthropy team. The HSUS has retained Freeman Philanthropic Services, LLC to assist on this important recruitment. HSUS: Page 1
2 ABOUT THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES The Humane Society of the United States is the nation s largest animal protection organization, rated the most effective by its peers. Since 1954, The HSUS has been fighting for the protection of all animals through advocacy, education, and hands-on programs. We rescue and care for tens of thousands of animals each year, but our primary mission is to prevent cruelty before it occurs. We're there for all animals, across America and around the world. The HSUS seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals a world that will also benefit people. We are America's mainstream force against cruelty, exploitation and neglect, as well as the most trusted voice extolling the human-animal bond. We work to reduce suffering and to create meaningful social change for animals by advocating for sensible public policies, investigating cruelty and working to enforce existing laws, educating the public about animal issues, joining with corporations on behalf of animal-friendly policies, and conducting hands-on programs that make ours a more humane world. We are a leading disaster relief agency for animals, and we provide direct care for thousands of animals at our sanctuaries and rescue facilities, wildlife rehabilitation centers, and mobile veterinary clinics. We celebrate pets, as well as wildlife and habitat protection. We are the nation's most important advocate for local humane societies, providing shelter standards and evaluations, training programs, a national advertising campaign to promote pet adoption, direct support, and national conferences. We operate a Humane Wildlife Services program in the D.C. metro area to provide homeowners and businesses with humane and effective solutions to conflicts with our wild neighbors. We promote scientific innovation by driving the development of humane alternatives to replace harmful animal experiments. The HSUS publishes All Animals, a membership magazine, and Animal Sheltering, a bi-monthly magazine for animal sheltering professionals. We confront national and global cruelties through major campaigns targeting the barbaric practices of dog fighting and cockfighting; abusive puppy mills where dogs are treated not like family but like production machines; the worst cruelties of factory farming in modern agribusiness such as confinement of animals in crates and cages; inhumane and unsporting hunting practices such as "canned hunts" of captive exotic animals; the suffering of animals in experimentation, including chimpanzees and pets; the slaughter of American horses for export to foreign countries where horsemeat is considered a delicacy; and the clubbing of baby seals and other animals for the commercial fur trade. Our track record of effectiveness has led to meaningful victories for animals in Congress, state legislatures, courtrooms and corporate boardrooms. Please visit HSUS website ( to learn more about the organization s mission, accomplishments, friends, opposition, animal sanctuaries and care centers, events and conferences, departments and affiliates, and much more. In 2014 so far, The HSUS has played a part in a number of important victories for animals: HSUS: Page 2
3 Animal rescue We conducted a number of rescues of animals in crisis, including dogfighting and cockfighting busts in Alabama, and hundreds of dogs rescued from puppy mills in Arkansas and several in North Carolina. We worked with an animal shelter in North Carolina to eliminate its gas chamber. We succeeded in fortifying the federal animal fighting statute by making it a crime to attend or bring a child to an animal fight, which will allow us to crack down on the entire cast of characters involved. South Dakota became the 50th state in the nation to establish felony-level penalties for malicious cruelty to animals, after a decades-long national campaign by HSUS to have 50 state felony statutes. Farm animals Ending intensive confinement of farm animals: We secured major announcements from multi-billion dollar meat companies Smithfield Foods and Tyson Foods urging their contractors to phase out the use of gestation crates. Wendy s, Cheesecake Factory, Food Lion, and other major food retailers kept the pressure on their suppliers by making demands on gestation crates. Thanks to the work of Humane Society International (HSI), Canada will enact a national ban on gestation crates. In addition, Kentucky became the eighth state to ban veal crates. Banning the slaughter of horses and sick and injured veal calves: We blocked horse slaughter in the U.S. through de-funding inspections in Congress, preventing plants in Iowa, Missouri, and New Mexico from opening. The USDA shut down a veal calf slaughter plant in New Jersey that was the subject of an HSUS undercover investigation. Exposing factory farm practices: We released an investigation of abuse at a pig factory farm in Kentucky. Nicholas Kristof of The New York Times broke the story. We blocked the King amendment, which was an enterprise-level threat to the animal welfare movement. We made it too controversial to be included in the Farm Bill. We organized a coalition of 500 organizations against it, and secured editorials opposing it from The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Des Moines Register, Denver Post, Tulsa World, and other newspapers. Wildlife Keeping Michigan's wolves and Maine s bears protected: We submitted enough signatures to qualify a second referendum in Michigan on wolf hunting. We also succeeded in gathering enough signatures to qualify a ballot measure in Maine to ban bear baiting, hounding, and trapping. Ending shark finning: We persuaded the Obama Administration to reverse its position that had threatened to preempt state laws banning the trade in shark fins. A federal court also dismissed a challenge to California s shark finning law, a law we worked to pass. Ending whaling: The UN s International Court of Justice ruled that Japan s whaling program is a breach of the global whaling moratorium and lacks scientific legitimacy, in a case set into motion by HSI in Japan has announced it will suspend whaling in the southern hemisphere. Animal research Merck announced that it is ending the use of chimps in experiments, just weeks after we passed legislation in Congress to help finance the transfer of hundreds of government-owned chimps from labs to sanctuaries. Our 2009 undercover investigation of a chimp lab kick-started this priority campaign. Celebrating animal protection in the media As a result of a selfie that Ellen DeGeneres took at the Academy Awards, Samsung donated $1.5 million to The HSUS. The donation made international news. We arranged for Olympic athletes, led by silver medalist Gus Kenworthy, to bring back street dogs rescued from Sochi, Russia. HSI Vice President Kitty Block discussed the issue on The Today Show. 4 LEADERSHIP President & Chief Executive Officer Wayne Pacelle is President & CEO of The HSUS. Mr. Pacelle took office June 1, 2004 after serving for nearly 10 years as the organization's chief lobbyist and spokesperson. During his tenure, Mr. Pacelle has spurred major growth for the organization, which has an annual revenue of $180 million and assets of more than $200 million. The growth has partly been achieved through successful mergers with other animal protection organizations, including The Fund for Animals, Doris Day Animal League, and the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights. Mr. Pacelle has also dramatically grown the animal care programs, such as the Duchess Sanctuary in Oregon. The HSUS provides services for more animals than any other animal protection organization in the United States. For his achievements in crafting, qualifying, and passing statewide ballot initiatives, Campaigns and Elections named him "a rising star in politics in In addition, Mr. Pacelle (pictured) and The HSUS have worked for the passage of more than 500 new state laws since 2005, and he has helped to pass more than 25 federal statutes to protect animals in the last decade. He has testified before U.S. House and Senate committees on a wide range of animal protection issues. In addition, Mr. Pacelle is the founder of Humane USA, the non-partisan political arm of the animal protection movement, and the founder of The Humane Society Legislative Fund, a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that lobbies for animal welfare legislation and works to elect humane-minded candidates to public office. Mr. Pacelle's work on animal issues has been featured in thousands of newspapers and magazines across the country. In addition, he is an experienced writer with numerous pieces published in a variety of newspapers, journals and magazines, as well as his best-selling book, The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them. He also blogs at A Humane Nation ( where he covers the latest news and insights into our relationship with animals, and keeps readers informed about efforts to protect them. Prior to joining The HSUS, Mr. Pacelle served as the Executive Director of The Fund for Animals ( ); Associate Editor ( ) and, later, President of the Board for The Animals' Agenda magazine; and as a guest instructor for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Refuge Training Academy. He serves on the board of the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust, Humane Society International, Humane Society University, the South Florida Wildlife Center, Global Animal Partnership and Humane USA. In 2006, he co-founded the National Federation of Humane Societies (NFHS), a trade association principally representing local humane societies across the nation, and he now serves on the board of that organization. Widely and regularly recognized for his leadership and achievements by national publications and organizations, Mr. Pacelle received his B.A. in History and Studies in the Environment from Yale University. Board of Directors The Board is a distinguished group of leaders dedicated to mission and the ongoing success of The HSUS. The current officers include: Chair Eric L. Bernthal, Esq., Vice Chair Jennifer Leaning, M.D., S.M.H., Second Vice Chair Jason Weiss, Treasurer Kathleen M. Linehan, Esq., and Secretary Amy C. Rodgers. National Council The HSUS National Council is a high-level advisory body of influential individuals who work with the organization s executive staff and Board of Directors to advance the organization's mission.
