MAGAZINE SUMMER 2018 EXCLUSIVE MAGAZINE FOR WWF SUPPORTERS ISSUE 39 A BOLD MOVE FOR EASTERN QUOLLS You ve helped protect koala homes, fly rock-wallabies to safety, and uncover a new population of northern bettongs. Now, will you please help get eastern quolls back to the Australian mainland? Eastern quolls once thrived all across southeast Australia. But over the last 50 years, habitat loss and introduced predators have wiped them out on our mainland. Today, these beautiful creatures survive only in Tasmania. WWF-Australia and partners are reintroducing eastern quolls to the mainland where they also belong. With your help, and the support from our partners at Rewilding Australia, we will move a small number of animals from Tasmanian breeding facilities to Booderee National Park in Jervis Bay. Your donations will help WWF- Australia choose the right animals to move and prepare them for life in the wild. You ll help to fund their flight and the technology needed to monitor them in their new home. Help eastern quolls move back to mainland Australia. Your donation will be used to: 1 Breed and prepare quolls for their transfer 2 Fly them to Booderee National Park in Jervis Bay 3 Monitor them in their new home using radio tracking collars

WWF-AUS / MADELEINE SMITHAM READY FOR TAKE OFF Eastern quolls are making a comeback to mainland Australia with a little help from amazing supporters like you. Bundoola and Spundula are small, spotted and fiercely cute. They re also in a special group of eastern quoll pups preparing to move from Tasmania to the mainland where their species has been extinct for more than 50 years. WITH SUPPORT FROM PASSIONATE PEOPLE LIKE YOU, WWF-AUSTRALIA AND OUR PARTNERS WILL REINTRODUCE AROUND 20 EASTERN QUOLLS TO BOODEREE NATIONAL PARK IN JERVIS BAY NEXT YEAR. HOW DID THESE TWO CUTE QUOLLS GET THEIR NAMES? You voted in our Facebook competition! You chose the names of two Dreaming figures important to the Aboriginal tribes of Jervis Bay. Bundoola controls ocean resources and Spundula is responsible for weather patterns. facebook.com/wwfaustralia The park has been cleared of introduced predators such as foxes and cats, to give these pint-sized pioneers their best chance of rebuilding a thriving population. As predators, eastern quolls play a key role in keeping their ecosystems healthy. Restoring them to their former home range will be a huge win for Australian conservation. Help quoll pups make a historic move for their species. WWF-AUS / MADELEINE SMITHAM LIVING PLANET MAGAZINE SUMMER 2018

WWF-AUS / LISA TIRTAJAYA WWF-AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIA S ANIMALS SAY THANK YOU You re making a real difference for many of the 21 native species that WWF- Australia has pledged to save by When I announced that WWF-Australia had set ourselves the ambitious target of giving at least 21 threatened native species a secure future by 2021, I had no idea how our supporters would respond. You ve responded with enthusiasm, generosity and a real commitment! It s been wonderful, and I can t thank you enough for helping WWF take the bold steps needed to halt Australia s extinction crisis. Thanks to you, there s already great work happening and progress being made. Bringing eastern quolls back to the mainland is part of the 21 by 2021 ambition, and I hope you ll also throw your powerful support behind that project. We couldn t keep fighting for nature without passionate people like you behind us. MEET OUR YOUNGEST TIGER CHAMPIONS These inspiring kids held a school fundraiser to save the world s tigers. Tigers are amazing. agree Mila, 7, Dashiell, 6, Joshua, 6, and Clementine, 6. When they learnt how endangered tigers are, they decided to raise money to help give them a safer future. By selling books and toys at their Sydney school, the children managed to raise more than $500 for tiger conservation. To thank them for this extraordinary effort, WWF- Australia invited them to meet with our resident tiger expert, Tim Cronin. The children and Tim had a great time talking about tigers and how WWF is helping to protect them from poaching and other threats. Thank you for supporting our work to keep tigers roaming the Earth. You re in a group of worldchangers that includes some of our youngest Australians. OLA JENNERSTEN / WWF-SWEDEN DONATE NOW AT WWF.ORG.AU

FIGHTING TREE-CLEARING CHERYL RIDGE TO SAVE KOALAS A big thank you to all who donated to WWF-Australia s Koala Appeal or sent a KIMBY (Koala In MyBackYard) message to urge Queensland s politicians to protect koala habitat. As we continue to pressure the government to change treeclearing laws, your generous gifts are being put to work at a koala conservation project in southeast Queensland. We re involved in planting new trees that will provide koalas with food and shelter, and reconnecting fragmented patches of forest. With your help, we are also renovating culverts or underpasses to help koalas travel safely beneath roadkill hotspots. Darren Grover, WWF-Australia s Head of Living Ecosystems, said the project will deliver immediate and long-term benefits. The culverts will keep koalas safe now. And with the tree replanting, we re turning the clock back for koalas, and giving them the best chance of thriving into the future. If you still need to send your KIMBY, please visit HAVE YOU SEEN A NUMBAT? If you re living or visiting Western Australia, you can help save the endangered numbat by telling us when you spot one. These small, termite-eating marsupials used to be found all across Southern Australia. But today, less than 1,000 numbats remain across their former range. You can help us, researchers, and the WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions to understand where numbats remain in the Warren Region and in what numbers. LESS THAN 1,000 NUMBATS REMAIN ACROSS THEIR FORMER RANGE. JOHN LAWSON / WWF-AUS If you re travelling through this area, we d love your help to survey numbats. If you see one, please fauna@dbca.wa.gov.au telling us where and when you saw the animal and what it was doing. Include GPS coordinates and a photo if you can. We need your keen eyes and kind donations to help numbats survive! JOHN LAWSON / WWF-AUS EXCLUSIVE MAGAZINE FOR WWF SUPPORTERS ISSUE 39

ALEKS TERAUDS / WWF-AUS HATS OFF TO OUR RANGERS In the remote Kimberley, and all around Australia, Indigenous rangers are helping WWF protect native species and habitats. They re looking after a number of threatened species including the Gouldian finch, purplecrowned fairy-wren and northern quoll. We ve also teamed up to monitor the health of snubfin dolphins and survey bilbies. Indigenous rangers play a key role in looking after native habitats. They manage feral animals and weeds, do prescribed burning, build fences, and maintain infrastructure and important cultural sites. Indigenous people have lived on this continent for millennia and know its seasons, landscapes and living creatures intimately. You re helping protect albatross from climate change. Rising temperatures are taking a toll on the giant birds, which nest in the thousands on Albatross Island in Bass Strait. The warmer air is reducing their breeding success and the rapid warming of the ocean could be making it harder for them to find prey. WWF-Australia is working with Tasmania s Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water And Environment, the CSIRO, the Tasmanian Albatross Fund and wonderful supporters like you, to help shy albatross cope with changes to their environment. One of those measures is installing more than 100 highquality artificial nests on Albatross Island, to help boost their breeding success. Partnering with them is a huge boost to WWF-Australia s efforts to save 21 native species by Thanks to our amazing Indigenous rangers and to you for supporting their vital, on-ground work to save Australian species. HOME BOOM FOR THESE TASSIE BIRDS THE PROJECT WILL ALSO SATELLITE TRACK AT LEAST 20 YOUNG BIRDS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW FISHERIES AND CLIMATE CHANGE ARE IMPACTING THEIR SURVIVAL. Thanks for giving Tasmania s unique sea birds the breeding boost they need. SCOTT VAN BARNEVELD / KIMBERLEY LAND COUNCIL / WWF-AUS MATTHEW NEWTON / WWF-AUS LIVING PLANET MAGAZINE SUMMER 2018

ANDREW ROUSE TAGGING TURTLES WITH OUR SUPPORTERS Supporter Sarah Vollmerhause leapt at the chance to join WWF for a turtle research trip in the Whitsundays. All supporters in WWF- Australia s Partners in Conservation program were invited on the research trip, which involved tagging green turtles with Gudjuda Rangers and researchers from James Cook University. For Sarah, who has always loved turtles, it was a dream come true. She was a key lookout on the boat to search for turtles and watched as rangers dived into the water and brought them back to the boat to photograph, take critical measurements and tag. When did you first learn about WWF? At a very young age! I was a supporter in the UK before they even established in Australia. What s the best bit about your job? Getting out in-the-field. I recently visited cane farmers in Queensland and it was inspiring to see the innovative practices they re implementing. And the biggest challenge? Getting as many farms as possible in the Great Barrier Reef catchments to adopt best practices that ensure the clean water the Reef needs. Sarah was hands on with the research work and even got the chance to name a turtle after her son Jack. Sarah said it was a unique honour to see how WWF-Australia is monitoring the health of turtles and their home. FOR SARAH IT WAS A DREAM COME TRUE. To learn how you can become a Partner in Conservation, and join us on our next research trip, contact Debra Almeida on dalmeida@wwf.org.au or panda symbol and WWF is a Registered Trademark WWF-Australia GPO Box 528 SYDNEY NSW wwf.org.au WHY I L VE MY JOB WWF Sustainable Agriculture Conservationist ANDRE ROUSE talks about talks about the Great Barrier Reef and the inspiring farmers who are helping to save it. How do you describe what you do? I say I work with an amazing bunch of farmers who want to improve their farming practices and the health of the Reef. What s your favourite animal or bird? One of my favourites is the wattle bird. I live in the inner city of Melbourne and wake up most mornings to the cackling calls of the local wattle bird family.
