We booked a guided hunt in Newfoundland to celebrate his safe return. It was the best hunt we ve ever had and a close call. Thanks to a great guide, Gregg scored a Grand Slam a bear, caribou, and moose in 4 days. Halfway back I spotted a good bull about 200 yards across a pond. I shot and he went down for keeps I thought. When we were 10 yards from the bull, he suddenly stood up and charged. Shoot him now! our guide yelled. He was coming right at me red eyes and all like a four-hoofed locomotive. I thought, My son is safely home but now I ve put him back in harm s way. Make this shot good! I dropped to one knee and fired point-blank into his brisket. As he was about to trample me, I dove to my left. The earth shook as he thundered by. The moose swam into the lake where he died. Quickly reacting, Gregg stripped off his clothes and swam out to the bull to pull the 1200-pounder 300 yards to shore. When I told Gregg I d mount the moose antlers, he said, Dad, we re gonna mount his entire head! This is the noble creature who charged and almost killed us! We had the best outfitter, guide, accommodations, and hunting we ve ever experienced. I went back with my bride for our summer honeymoon to fish Atlantic salmon. Newfoundland is beautiful wilderness like we ve never seen before! Don t miss it!

9 A World-Traveled Sportsman Chooses Newfoundland to Fulfill his Caribou Wish List Glenn Sapir Outdoor Writer, The Journal News Member, New York State Outdoorsmen s Hall of Fame The germ of my caribou and moose hunt to Newfoundland began on my 60th birthday, when I made up a wish list of dreams I hadn t fulfilled yet, and hunting those two giant members of the deer family were at the top of my list. A chance meeting with an outdoorsman from my region of New York State led to typical sportsmen s chatter, and before I knew it, he d identified the place for my dream hunt to take place: Newfoundland and Labrador. He travelled there every year to hunt, and his tales of success had my mouth watering and my head spinning. Two years later, my dream played out. I found myself in that magical land, a place like no other I had been. Bogs like sponges, mountains like Norwegian fjords, and animals out of the sporting magazines I d read since I was a young boy were all part of the experience. Caribou can be in one place one day and gone the next, so for my guide and me, the challenge became being in the same place as them. We glassed from logging roads, looking over boggy fields as vast as the eye could see. We set out on foot, knowing that around every stand of woodlands we might encounter the prized woodland caribou unique to Newfoundland. Finally, we saw a band several hundred yards away. At 150 yards, we studied the six magnificent animals. One was a mature bull. I placed my on a shooting stick rest I had brought with me. I put the big male in my scope s reticules. My caribou hunt had come to a close in Newfoundland, but my adventures there had only begun.

I was young and spry on my maiden visit, and although my heart and spirit seems unchanged, my body tells otherwise. Although I have hunted caribou and moose in both locales, most of my hunts have been for black bear. Why, you might ask, would someone want to hunt the same place for the same game animal so many times? My reply to that comes based on several things I know and know well. Yes, there are quality bear hunts all across the continent, but none are like Newfoundland or Labrador. There is something unique about this place. Whether it is spiritual or emotional or perhaps it is something in the air or water, when all is said and done Newfoundland and Labrador touches me like no other place, and for me each visit is like a visit home. Newfoundland and Labrador may not have a lot of bear compared to other provinces across Canada, but the island is world-famous for bears with a genetic predisposition for large body mass. Specimens into the 400 and 500-pound class are not uncommon, and larger examples in the 600-pound class have been harvested. Few places produce as many large-bodied black bears as Newfoundland and Labrador year in and year out. There are fewer bear hunters, bears are less pressured, and success rates are high. Add in long spring seasons, a fall archery season and rifle season that coincides with moose and caribou, a two-bear limit and world-class hunting packages, and I have little doubt you will be calling Newfoundland and Labrador home too.

15 Some say our black bears are the biggest bruins in North America. It s hard to top trophies weighing over 500 pounds and two hunting seasons. Not to mention experienced guides like Trevor. But our high success rates do a good job.

Passengers must make arrangements to be picked up and dropped off at Emeril Siding, 60 kilometres east of Labrador City where Route 500 meets the rail line (Toll-free) By Sea Marine Atlantic operates year-round superferry service between North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Channel-Port aux Basques in southwest Newfoundland. Crossing time is about five hours in summer, and seven hours in winter. There is also a summer service between North Sydney and Argentia on Newfoundland s Avalon Peninsula from mid June to late September. 20 By Road To catch the ferry to Newfoundland, follow the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) through Nova Scotia and Cape Breton to North Sydney. The TCH is Route 104 in Nova Scotia, and becomes Route 105 in Cape Breton. You can drive to western Labrador along Québec Route 389 from Baie-Comeau, Québec. Most of this road is paved. It connects with Route 500 (a mainly gravel road) that crosses Labrador from Wabush and Labrador City in the west, through Churchill Falls, to Happy Valley-Goose Bay in east-central Labrador on huge Lake Melville. A new gravel road, an extension of Route 510, connects the Lake Melville area with Cartwright and other communities on Labrador s southeast coast as far as L Anse-au-Clair on the Labrador-Québec border. Five kilometres from L Anse-au-Clair in Blanc Sablon, Québec, is a seasonal ferry to St. Barbe on Newfoundland s northwest coast. In winter, an ice-strengthened ferry operates between Blanc Sablon and Corner Brook on Newfoundland s west coast. Getting Around All the main highways on the island of Newfoundland are paved. There are only a few short gravel sideroads, and these are well maintained. In Labrador, Route 510 is paved from L Anse-au-Clair to Red Bay, and is gravel beyond that to Cartwright/Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Route 500 from Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Churchill Falls and Labrador City/Wabush is also a mainly gravel highway with short paved sections near the major towns. Charter Aircraft Many remote lodges can be reached only by float plane or helicopter. Discuss this with your outfitter, who can either fly you in his own aircraft, or recommend a company. Space in these small planes and helicopters is limited, so keep your gear to only what s required. If you plan to ship meat or antlers, your outfitter can advise you of the best way to do it.
