From: Susanne Lueloff May :33 PM +WPG Public Registry (SO) NO MORE PIG BARNS IN MANITOBA Pigs have a right to live. This cruelty needs to stop. No more pig barns in Manitoba!!! 1
From: Steven McCready May :17 P +WPG PublicRegistry(SD) Ban pigbarns Good afternoon, Based on the inhumane treatment and torture of pigs and the detriment to the environment, there should be NO more pig barns in Manitoba. Respectfully, Tamara McCready Sent from my iphone 1
From: Tess Klachefsky May :37 PM +WPG Public Registry (SO) Bill 24 Good afternoon, I am writing to vehemently express my outrage at the push to increase pig production. Not only is it bad for the environment, it is horrible for the welfare of these animals. The PED outbreak has not been contained-- that is what needs our focus, not subjecting more pigs to a life of cruelty and disease. This is not "cutting red tape" as noted by the Conservative government-- this is taking hard fought animal and environmental protections back a decade. I am an avid Conservative voter-- Regards, Tess Klachefsky if this Bill is repealed, I will no longer be voting Conservative.
+WPG530 - Environmental Engineering (SO) From: TINA OVERGAARD May :38 PM +WPG Public Registry (SO) PLEASE STOP BILL 24 We live in a modern and compassionate society. Allowing the passage of Bill 24 will only increase the number of factory farmed animals that live a life of horrendous cruelty and painful suffering. Just do a bit of research and you will find scientific facts that you can't ignore. Factory farming is the leading cause of worlds greenhouse gasses. Slaughterhouse workers have 3 times the suicide and ptsd rate than other occupations. Vegan and vegetarian options have increased by over 300% in Pigs are smarter than your three year old. Need I say more? I urge you to listen to the people and DO NOT allow passage of Bill 24. Canadians deserve better. Thank you, Tina Overgaard 1
From: Ty Savoy May :55 A +WPG Public Registry (SO) No More Pig Farms Please Just putting in my 2 cents worth here. Factory Farm pig production is a horror story for many reasons. A cheap source of pork isn't worth all of the problems associated with it. We don;t need these things. Please. No more Pig Farms in Manitoba. Thanks Ty Savoy 1
+WPG530 - Environmental Engineering (SO) From: Vanessa Jackson May :20 PM +WPG Public Registry (SO) No more pig barns please Just because we can confined animals, doesn't mean we should. What if you were a pig.
From: W& I Mirosh May :34 PM Micklefield, Andrew (LEG); +WPG Public Registry (SD) LMMMR amendments "Water is very important to me as a citizen of Manitoba - and as a voter. When it comes to the future of my province, I expect my government to make decisions based on evidence. I understand that you are proposing changes to existing legislation and regulation that will allow for the expansion of Manitoba's hog industry. Common sense dictates that before any changes are implemented, we need evidence that conclusively proves that any expansion of existing hog industry will not result in an increase in phosphorus loading to Lake Winnipeg. I own property just north of Grand Beach at Lester beach and I am concerned at the amount of green algae and the death of our Net/ey- Libau Marsh. Our Fishing industry is in jepardy if we donot protect our Lake. I strongly urge this government to collect and publish all appropriate data before making any changes that could jeopardize the health of our water. " Walter & Isabel Mirosh
+WPG530 - Environmental Engineering (SO) From: Yolande Law May :15 PM +WPG Public Registry (SD) Pig Barns To whom it may concern, I'm writing you this to let you know that increasing the numbers of pig barns in Manitoba is not ideal. More and more people, myself included, are concerned about the well being of pigs and their treatment from birth to slaughter. Being a vegetarian myself, I am strongly against increasing the numbers of pig barns. People are more aware of what goes on with the treatments of these animals and choose not to support this industry. I understand that some people will continue to consume pork however, more and more people are choosing a plant based diet as an alternative. Instead of increasing the numbers of pig barns, please consider regulating common practices used in barns so that pigs, although considered as food for some people, can also live a humane and natural life. Please consider cage free farming as an alternative. Thank you very much for reading this . Sincerely, Yolande Law
+WPG530 - Environmental Engineering (SO) From: julie_windsor May :51 AM +WPG Public Registry (SD) No more pigs in barns This is a very cruel unnatural way to keep pigs. They are by nature sociable animals that live in family groups. Please stop using the crates as soon as possible I am sure there are better, kinder ways to rear them without adding to the cost. Ar least let them know some happiness before they die. Julie Windsor Bristol, U..K Sent from Samsung tablet 1
+WPG530 - Environmental Engineering (SO) From: Catherin May :37 AM +WPG Public Registry (SD) Attention: Premier Brian Palmister Dear Mr. Pallister, I am writing to urge you to reject Bill 24. However, given the lack of moral compass in most of the world as regards to livestock production, slaughter and sale, I'm not hopeful that the welfare of animals has a hope in hell. Please make Canada a leader in this area and stop the unrestricted growth of pig farms. These are not cars we're talking about, but living, breathing, feeling creatures who suffer just as surely as we would should we have the misfortune to find ourselves in the same conditions. If we expect them to give up their lives so that we might have a sausage link or two beside our eggs, the least we can do is to treat them well before slaughter. And with the mass production that Bill 24 proposes, this will be next to impossible. I wouldn't want the suffering of millions of animals on my head (nor my conscience). I'm hoping you will feel the same. Catherine Osborne Orangeville, ON 1
From: May : AM +WPG Public Registry (SO) Our beautiful Lake Winnipeg. We should have started to look after Lake Winnipeg decades ago. I hope it's not too late. I'm 80 years old, so I'll never know if it can be saved. But I hope so for my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Please do not even consider relaxing the regulations on pig farms. I'm sorry it makes things difficult for our pig farmers, but the lake it more important--not just Lake Winnipeg, but all of our lakes. If the farms can't be economically run within the regulations, they will have to close down. That's only one small step to making things better. Please, at least, don't make things worse. Sincerely, Gail Halldorson 1
From:. teetalee teetalee May :54 AM +WPG Public Registry (SO) Attn: Premier Brian Pallister Dear Honourable Premier: I apologize for getting in late with this comment on your recent bill (BILL 24). (May 12 being the due date) I am greatly concerned for both environmental reasons and for animal welfare / safety with your introduction of a bill that would remove the ban on construction of new pig barns and weaken the environmental regulations governing the handling and spreading of untreated pig manure. It is tragically ironic that pigs were "treated" far better in olden days, living in less crowded housing areas, having access to outdoors, and not being subjected to the inhumane ways of the modern age with gestation cages, the mutilation of piglets without anesthetic, etc. This is 2017, and I am urging you to not go forward with BILL 24. Please don't subject these intelligent creatures to more suffering. I gave up eating all meat because of moral issues like this and I'm not alone...millions more are joining in this campaign of wanting this world to be more compassionate towards other species. I would further urge you to upgrade the living conditions for these animals in the current farming industry housing and make them more humane. Please make me proud of Manitoba as a province that cares about livestock and is forward thinking! I thank you for your time, Shirley Eikhard
+WPG530 - Environmental Engineering (SO) From: Cc: Gwyneth PICKERING April :19 PM Premier (LEG); Agriculture, Minister (LEG); Sustainable Development, Minister (LEG) Growth, Enterprise & Trade, Minister (LEG) Fwd: Proposed Changes to Hog Manure Regulations Dear Premier Pallister, Minister Eichler, Minister Goertzen and Minister Cox, Re: Proposed Changes to Hog Manure Regulations: I am writing to express my concern with the possible amendments to the hog manure regulations that your government is proposing. Please note that I am including the Minister of Health in this missive as water is our most important resource and any changes should strengthen its protection rather than erode the regulations already in existence. How can you, the government, be maintaining strong environmental protection by: Removing the soil nitrate level limits already in existence? Boosting manure storage facility size and length of storage? Removing the requirement for livestock operators to hire licensed manure applicators? ( In theory, you are suggesting that anyone could do this work.) Removing the need to report on livestock drinking-water analysis? I am an ordinary citizen who cares deeply about our environment especially for our children and grandchildren. Climate change is a fact and utilizing manure is an important part of a comprehensive plan to attempt to mitigate our past errors to address global warming. Please carefully consider any changes that could even fractionally increase the risk of pollution to our (and our livestock's) water supply and to the environment. I know the hog industry provides work and moneys to our province but we must maintain strong regulations to prevent any and all possible adverse effects of deregulating or weakening current regulations. Gwyneth Pickering
C.C. Minister Cliff Cullen 2
-----Origina I Message----- From: Betsy Thorsteinso Thursday, May 11, :58 AM Premier Changes to hog barn regulations Dear Premier Brian Pallister, I have never written to the premier of Manitoba before on any subject butl would like to express my objections to the changes to the regulation of hog barns in Manitoba. This is an industry that should not be expanded in our province because of the danger of more phosphorus making its way to our already stressed Lake Winnipeg. The duty of each government is to protect the environment for future generations, and I see this enabling of the expansion of hog barns as an neglect of that duty.
