1 Cheryl Sobie May-3-7 2:53 AM +WPG28 - Public Registry (SD) No more pig barns To Whom It May Concern, I am a Manitoba resident and I am extremely concerned about the fact that the Manitoba Government plans to introduce Bill 24 which will eliminate the current ban on hog barn production and environmental protection put in place and allow for the industry to meet its goal of increasing hog barn production by 25%. According to the Canadians for Ethical Treatment of Farm Animals this means another.3 innocent pigs will be tortured and then then murdered each year. This is in addition to approximately 8 million pigs that are already killed each year in Manitoba. That is an astronomical amount of lives that are taken each year. The life of a farmed animal is a horrific one. Animals are bred into existence only to be confined their entire lives, castrated without pain killers, baby piglets are crushed to death, and then they are gassed to death. This is completely barbaric and unnecessary. I can't understand why the government would want to support such a horrific industry. Further, pig manure ends up in manure lagoons that are completely toxic. Lake Winnipeg is dying. We all know why. Manure lagoons are toxic and they have poisoned our beautiful lake. Animal agriculture is a destructive industry that has no regard for animal life, human life or our environment. Working in a slaughterhouse is one of the most dangerous jobs that leads to PTSD. Can you imagine your job as a full time murderer of life? Animals do not deserve the violence that humans inflict upon them. Animals are very much like us. They have the will to live, they feel love, fear, pain, and they certainly don't want to die. There is no humane way to kill someone who does not want to die. It makes no logical sense to murder animals. Just because something is legal does not make it right. Animal agriculture is a destructive industry that has no regard for animal life, human life or our environment. I am asking you to please make the connection. I am urging the government to please take a firm stance on this. Please do not increase production of pigs barns. Instead shift the focus to real solutions such as transitioning away from animal agriculture into more plant based farming. See for example. I hope that the Manitoba Government will make the right choice and be leaders in the change against healing our environment and stop the needless killing of animals. It is possible to create a better future and it starts with repealing Bill C-24. Thank you, Cheryl Sobie

3 Debrah McCabe May-2-7 3:28 PM +WPG28 - Public Registry (SD) Bill 24 Sir: With animal agriculture being the premier culprit in climate change (5% GHG emissions world wide!), and pig consumption steadily decreasing, I am appalled that your government thinks it's a good idea to increase pig production by 25%. You are supporting the end of the environment and complete and utter cruelty. As a Canadian who values the environment, has grandchildren who will be growing up in the world you governments are enabling and someone who finds the cruelty that (food' animals are subjected to each and every day of their short miserable lives deplorable beyond description, I am appalled that you have these hideous plans. Not only that, but it's a known fact that a plant diet has overall, better health outcomes in the arena's of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and several forms of cancer. Put research into developing technologies that will provide more and better food for people and leave the animals out of it. Debrah McCabe Stratford, PEl
4 Diana Skakavac May-2-7 4:8 PM +WPG28 - Public Registry (SO) Pig Barns in Manitoba Hello, I am ing to express my concern regarding pig barns in Manitoba. I do not believe they should exist, first and foremost, and the manure should most definitely not be allowed to be left untreated to go into our waterways. We do not need more pig barns. We need more of an incentive for product of plant products as that is how the market is shifting. Animal agriculture is an industry that needs to be left in the dust. Kind regards, Diana Skakavac

7 Jenni Slaven May-2-7 6:27 PM +WPG28 - Public Registry (SO) Pig barns Hello, As a concerned citizen, I would like to voice my thoughts on the proposal to increase the number of pig barns in Manitoba. Like thousands of other Canadians, I believe the time has come for people to recognize that animals are sentient beings - as has been shown by science - and that Canada should be moving in the direction of decreasing the numbers of animals used in agriculture. Animal products are completely unnecessary for human health, and the animals suffer tremendously. There is simply no justification for this practice, and the increasing number of people adopting a vegan lifestyle has proven that the public are becoming aware of the unjustness of animal agriculture. In addition, it contributes to the degradation of the environment, polluting and using far more water than growing food from plant sources - consuming animals is an extremely inefficient way to obtain calories. It is also detrimental to human health. The government of Canada and all the provinces should keep the best interests of its citizens in mind, and considering that animal agriculture is entirely negative in its effects, and benefits ONLY the companies that profit financially from the exploitation of animals, and ill-health of people, I find it vitally important that you take this opportunity to show some real leadership on this critical issue. Thank you for listening to my concerns, Jenni Slaven, Beaconsfield QC
8 +WPG530 - Environmental Engineering (SO) From: Jessica Ciel May-2-7 5:08 PM +WPG28 - Public Registry (SO) Reject Bill 24 To Whom It May Concern} As a US citizen and strong believer in compassion and humane treatment of animals as well as the environment} I am pleading with those in the position to do so to reject Bill 24. If it passes} it will eliminate important legislation that helps to protect our environment and farm animals that spend their lives suffering in deplorable and inhumane conditions. We have to do whatever we can to ensure that this legislation that was fought so hard for is kept in place. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope it will be taken into consideration. Sincerely} Jessica Cielo Sent from my iphone
9 +WPG530 - Environmental Engineering (SO) From: Kelsey Hargreaves May-2-7:35AM +WPG28 - Public Registry (SO) Public Consultation - LMMMR Amendments Dear Consultation Committee, I have heard about changes to regulations and laws affecting Manitoba's hog industry that will allow for industry expansion. I am concerned about the effects of increased manure application to agricultural fields due to industry expansion. It is important that the government prove with robust evidence that this will not increase phosphorus loading into Lake Winnipeg. I grew up spending my summers at my family cottage on Lake Winnipeg, and I want my future children to have the same opportunity to do so that I did. I love spending time at the Lake, but not when it is a green cesspool of algae. I support Manitoba's pork industry and welcome further economic development in our Province. Tourism and recreation are also important culturally and economically. In addition to being an ecological resource, Lake Winnipeg also provides economic value from the commercial fishing industry. It is important to continue to strive for a healthier. Manitoba's Clean Environment Commission released a review of the environmental sustainability of the pork industry in Manitoba in 2007, noting that environmental regulation must be evidence-based, and that the province should provide resources to address research and monitoring gaps to improve the industry's sustainability. However, this has not happened, and we only have 0-year old data to rely on. This is not adequate to assess the outcomes of the proposed changes to regulations. Manitobans must have new and up to date information on the changes' effects on water quality that shows that hog industry expansion will not increase phosphorus loading to Lake Winnipeg. Sincerely, Kelsey Hargreaves Winnipeg, MB

That's disgusting) wrong. And sad!!! If you did your research you'd know that humans were never made to eat animals, you'd know that our jaws and back teeth were not strong enough and sadly humans have evolved to eating it which is in humane.. all because people are too lazy to discover REAL foods! 13 LesleyRichards May-2-7 5:4 PM +WPG28 - PublicRegistry(SD) Farm buildingcode Hello, I am writing to ask that the Manitoba Farm Building Code not be repealed, and that Bill C-24 not be passed. Each of these acts will result in less protection for the welfare of pigs and other animals, this is simply unethical and unnecessary. In addition to these animals being exposed to illness, injury, and overall suffering, there are further negative impacts on the environment. Repealing the Farm Building Code and passing Bill C-24 has detrimental consequences and is a step backwards in terms of caring for our environment and the beings that inhabit it. Lesley Richards
14 +WPG530 - Environmental Engineering (SO) From: Lisa Madeleine Smit May-2-7 6:26 PM +WPG28 - Public Registry (SD) Do not repeal the Manitoba Farm Building Code Dear Sir or Madam, Please do not repeal the Manitoba Farm Building Code. This would remove two important forms of protection for farmed animals from barn fires (fire stops on load-bearing walls and the requirement for a water supply to fight fires). It is irresponsible to consider repealing this code. Also I do not agree with Bill 24. If adopted, the new legislation would eliminate the ban on the construction of new pig barns and weaken environmental regulations governing the handling and spreading of untreated pig manure. Manitoba already has,379 pig farms, and is currently experiencing yet another outbreak of PED, which sentences piglets to slow, excruciating deaths. Yet, the industry's new goal - supported by the Pallister government - is to increase pig production by 25 per cent through the addition of 50 to 00 new barns, subjecting another.3 million pigs to lives of confinement, deprivation and cruelty. Please do not allow this to happen. It is irresponsible, cruel and just greedy to even consider this action. With grateful thanks. Lisa Madeleine Smith Toronto, ON

Yours truly) arcel and Louise Mollot Winnipeg) MB
