4 Biography/History E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours and his son? leuth?re Ir?n?e du Pont the company began with the production of gunpowder. The du Pont?s purchased a mill site on the banks of the Brandywine River just North of Wilmington, Delaware. In 1894, the American Smokeless Powder Company built a works near Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. The company was taken over by the Laflin & Rand Company in In 1902, DuPont took control of Laflin & Rand. Infallible and Ballistite powders were manufactured there, but the plant was permanently closed in During wartime the company was a major supplier for the United States government. During peacetime, the company marketed their product towards sportsmen and hunters. Throughout the 1900s and 1910s, the company shifted its focus away from gunpowder production and towards chemistry innovations. By 1926 the company officially dissolved the powder production unit, although it had already been inactive for many years. Scope and Contents This collection is a series of six advertising cards for E.I. du Pont de Nemours Powder Company's smokeless powders for shotguns (DuPont smokeless; Hazard smokeless; New E.C. Improved; New Schultze; Infallible smokeless) and black sporting powders (DuPont Rifle; Hazard Kentucky Rifle; L. & R. Orange Extra Sporting). The cards are illustrated with a b&w pen and ink sketch surrounded with a border showing an outdoor setting with small birds; an artist initials, "E.M." are found in the border area suggesting the art work may be done by two people. The reverse side is completely textual and boasts DuPont powders are "the most popular powders in the world." The scenes show progressively through the six cards two gentlemen on a hunting trip starting in a fashionable parlor. The day's activities are labeled: Getting out the guns; That's what I want--dupont; Powders you can rely on--dupont; They've Got 'em; It's not Hunting to Kill Game; Return of the hunters.
