George St Pierre Contest On June 16th we had Parent / Student night. The kids had an opportunity to show their parents their skills and what it was like to take a karate class. It was a hot but fun night of karate for all. We will be having another Parent / Student night in August so stay tuned. Pics of the Month This months contest is to create a karate tree. App Redesign Editorial : Stances Fixed positions are for beginners, later one moves naturally Gichin Funakoshi 17th precept A commonly misunderstood word in karate is stance. Often it is interpreted as a static position, but that couldn t be farther from the truth. Confrontations are fluid and are rarely static. Usually the static participant will end up being the unconscious one at the end the fight. Stances are actually snap shots of transitory movements. We don t get into a stances to perform techniques, we perform techniques by getting into stances. For example, think of a golf swing. There are 3 stances in a golf swing, the backswing, the point of contact and the follow through. If any of these positions are wrong the ball won t go where you want it. The same holds true for karate techniques. Correcting position at key moments ensures proper effective technique. Remember everything in karate has a combative function and stances have two. 1. Learning how to efficiently move body weight in a combative situation. 2. Inhibiting the movement of your opponent. i.e.. sweeping, throwing, tripping, corralling, etc. by Sensei Rick Get in the newsletter! We are always looking for contributors.
