Dommeren. Ann Isabel, Julie, Hannah, Ina T. Arabesque DESCRIPTION An arabesque is an upright balanced pose on one leg with the other leg extended en l air or à terre derrière. It is a curved line from the head through the spine to the tips or the toes of the raised leg. The supporting leg is either straight or en fondu. The arms are placed in an extended position but still feeling support in the upper arms, with the palms facing downwards. The height of the extended leg should be 90º and when taking a fondu the working leg should lift the same amount as the bend of the supporting leg. There are three basic arabesque lines - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd arabesque. Battement Glissé DESCRIPTION The opening and closing of the fully stretched working leg with a quick gliding action of the foot which results in the toes being released just off the floor. The movement is a simultaneous combination of the lengthening of the spine and of pressure from the floor by the working foot. The outward action is completed by the strong use of the muscles under the arch of the foot and on the inward action, the foot returns firmly to a closed position through the use of the metatarsal arch and good use of floor pressure. This movement can be done from 1st, 3rd and 5th position. It can be done devant, derrière, à la seconde and en cloche. Battement tendu DESCRIPTION The opening and closing of a stretched leg à terre maintaining the turnout. This movement can be executed from 1st, 3rd and 5th position. It can be shown devant, derrière or à la seconde. There is a continuous outward rotation of both the supporting leg and working leg. Throughout this movement the leg remains fully stretched and the toes are in contact with the floor.

2 Changement. DESCRIPTION A jumping action which starts in 3rd or 5th position and alights in 3rd or 5th position with the other foot in front. At the height of the jump the legs/feet change, separating as little as possible through a tight 1st position. Coupé DESCRIPTION To transfer OR TO CUT the weight of the body from one foot to the other. Demi DESCRIPTION Half Demi Pointe DESCRIPTION Half pointe (to stand on the ball of the foot). Demi -Seconde DESCRIPTION A low position in which both arms are slightly curved and opened halfway between bras bas and 2nd position. The palms of the hands facing towards each other. Positions of the Arms: In all positions the hands follow the line of the arms and the fingers are softly grouped together. The centre or middle finger continues the curve of the inner arm and the thumb is in line with the index and middle finger. In bras bas, 1st and 5th positions the arms are held the width of the face apart so that the centre fingers do not touch. Derrière DESCRIPTION At the back. Devant DESCRIPTION In front. En face DESCRIPTION Facing the front. Grand DESCRIPTION Grand [grahn, grahnd] Big, large (For example a large jump).

3 Petits jetés DESCRIPTION A small springing action sur place (on the same spot) from one foot to the other. This movement can be done either devant or derrière. The placing of the working foot is sur le cou-de-pied devant or derrière with a fully stretched foot. The step starts in the cou-de-pied position - with a good spring into the air off the supporting leg, both legs stretch underneath the body before the other foot moves to cou-de-pied and alight in a good fondu on the other foot. Pas de Chat DESCRIPTION A light jumping step traveling slightly sideways. Commencing in 3rd or 5th position moving towards the back foot, feel a good push off the floor and simultaneously lifting the back foot to retiré followed by the front foot into retiré. At the height of the jump both legs are in the air in a grand plié position in either 3rd or 5th position. Landing first on the back leg followed swiftly by the front leg showing a good demi-plié in 3rd or 5th position. When alighting the opening of the front leg happens directly in line with the knee. Arms usually to 3rd position - same arm forward to the traveling direction. This movement happens in one count. If translated directly it means step of a cat. Pirouette DESCRIPTION A complete turn of the body on one foot, on demi-pointe or en pointe Demi Plié DESCRIPTION A half bending and stretching action of the legs over the toes with the heels remaining firmly on the floor. This movement is executed in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th positions. Grand Plié DESCRIPTION A full bending and stretching action of the legs over the toes and the heels leave the floor when moving beyond the depth of the demi-plié. During the straightening of the legs, the heels are lowered to the floor in a demi-plié as soon as possible and then continue the upward and straightening action. This is the action when executing this movement in 1st, 3rd,4th and 5th positions. However in 2nd position, because of a wider base, the Achilles tendons can be stretched with the heels remaining on the floor throughout this movement.

4 Retiré DESCRIPTION The working leg performs a drawing up action along the supporting leg to a position just under the knee (retiré devant), or at the side of the knee (retiré), or behind the knee (retiré derrière), or retiré passé devant or derrière which is the same placing as for retiré. When doing a retiré devant the foot peels off the floor to cou-de-pied devant where the little toe touches the front ankle bone (petit retiré devant). Using the strong lift of the thigh the movement continues up along the front part of the supporting leg in a well turned out position, with the hips remaining level and pelvis line well controlled. The movement ends when the little toe contacts the hollow under the knee. For the retiré position it follows the same tracking as previously described up to where the calf muscles starts and then traces the line of the calf (over the bulge) to the side of the knee of the supporting leg. Petit retiré position moves exactly as described for retire except it finishes at the side of the working leg just above the ballet shoe or at the base of the Achilles tendon, at the same height as the ankle bone. For the retiré derrière position it is the same movement as for devant except the leg starts derriére and the toe of the fully pointed foot is in contact with the back of the supporting heel (petit retiré derriére) and it remains derriére to where the big toe joint contacts the back of the supporting knee at the same height as retiré devant. For the retiré passé devant, the foot starts from the back reaches the point at the side of the knee and then tracks down the front of the supporting leg to close devant. Retiré passé derrière starts from the front and the tracking of the foot is the same as for a retiré and then slides down the back of the supporting leg to close at the back. Sauté DESCRIPTION A jump into the air and landing in the same position from where the jump took off. This action can be seen in 1st, 2nd, and 4th positions. The basic rule for jumping is a start from a demi-plié with the heels firmly pressed to the ground, the initial pressure to leave the floor is the pressure through the whole foot. The coordinated movement of the whole foot pushing from the floor propels the body in one piece into the air. At the height of the jump, the knees, insteps and toes are fully stretched and the spine are held and controlled. The return must be a soft landing, with the toes touching the floor first and the weight being distributed through the whole foot then into the knees showing a very good demi-plié with the spine held erect and well controlled.

5 Soubresaut DESCRIPTION A jumping action in 3rd or 5th position which alights in 3rd or 5th position, with the same foot in front. At the height of the jump the legs are firmly drawn together with the feet fully stretched. At the height of the jump only the front leg s foot should be visible and the back foot s heel. Legs must be well turned out.
