Hi, my name is Brian Allen. After spending years in the field of Executive Protection and Professional Security, I ve seen many people come & go most of them for the WRONG reasons! Incorrect expectations, false hopes and Hollywood visions have tricked many folks into spending THOUSANDS of dollars in resident schools or what my mentor calls Adventure Bodyguard Schools. Sometimes you ll want to be seen and become a deterrent other times you ll want to blend in the environment so no unwanted attention is created. 2. Ability to think under stressful conditions a. We all like to think of ourselves as competent professionals who will react in real life just as we do in training. My observations have been that, unless you ve been under fire, had someone bigger stronger faster than you attacking you or your client, or have worked numerous hours under no sleep / food conditions you really have no idea how you ll react. 3. Verbal De-Escalation Skills a. Some of our most important skills are proper advance work and threat avoidance. Just under that are verbal de-escalation skills. In your career, you ll have to de-escalate bad-guys, your partners even your client! This skill will save lives eliminate embarrassment; keep you out of the courtroom, etc. 4. Hand-to-hand skills a. See Martial Arts and Executive Protection below. 5. Less Lethal weapons a. Like de-escalation skills, these tools will save lives eliminate embarrassment; help you in the courtroom, etc. 6. Firearms a. Knowledge of firearm use under combat stress is mandatory. I m not talking about spending hours at a range and just focusing on proper sight alignment & trigger squeeze. When the sh_t hits the fan and you have to alert, cover, shoot, move and communicate traditional marksmanship training won t keep us alive. Go to instructors who specialize in simunitions training, point shooting, and stress inoculation training. Page 4 of 7

Basic self-defense combined with a sharp mind is the goal. However, here's a hint for folks wanting to get into this industry. Don't say this to a potential employer: "I'd like to work here as a bodyguard. I've trained in martial arts for 9 years and have won 95% of my full contact matches. My instructor was a bodyguard too. I'm not afraid of anything!" Do you think the person interviewing this guy might be thinking, "LIABILITY & BAD PRESS NIGHTMARE"? I do. While all martial arts have some benefit, these four have proven the most beneficial for our industry: Aikido Hwa-rang Do Jujitsu styles Russian Systema AWESOME & POWERFUL STYLES Fudoshin Kenpo Jujitsu Jeet kun do Styles like these are phenomenal for street fighting but tend to only have one purpose - DESTROY the threat. Now while the thought may be nice... an employer needs people who have the option of physically deflecting the attack... wrapping the person up like a pretzel... and moving them away - WITHOUT causing the bad guy permanent brain & nerve damage! The truth? No style is "the best"! It always comes down to the human being. But, here's the bad news, it will take most people a lot longer to successfully learn & use let's say Aikido... in a street effective manner than Fudoshin Kenpo Jujitsu. So - start training as soon as possible and never stop training! Page 5 of 7

Today, the term Bodyguard tends to bring about an image of the typical security person who has been best friends with the mega-star he/she protects. No real training - just weightlifting and a gun. An Executive Protection agent brings about a picture of a Security Professional who may have a background as an agent for the US Secret Service or Diplomatic Security Service. They're people who can avoid & handle almost any physical threat... but also blend in the corporate environment or look at ease at a Sunday barbecue. BUSINESS SMARTS NECESSARY TO KEEP FOOD ON THE TABLE Don t listen to anyone who tells you this career is GREAT all of the time. Listen, you ll have your busy times and then you ll have your droughts.
