2 Our Story The Rocky Mountain Development Centre is nestled at the foot of the Vancouver s North Shore mountains, home to some of the world s most diverse and rugged terrain. We ve been developing high performance mountain bikes here since Many things have changed since we first opened our doors, but our product developers, engineers, marketing nerds, salespeople, and athletes are still a tight-knit crew that works and plays in these mountains. From local trail days to backcountry adventures, we re all here for a reason: we love mountain biking. Through the Years 1978 The soon-to-be Rocky Mountain founders are working in a Vancouver bike shop, and start modifying Nishiki road bikes with wide tires, straight bars and thumbshifters Rocky Mountain Bicycles Ltd. is incorporated in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The three original founders are Grayson Bain, Jacob Heilbron, and Sam Mak The Rocky Mountain founders accompany Tom Ritchey to Japan to select durable components and tubesets. Later that year, they create Canada s first homegrown fat tire bike the Sherpa Sales expand beyond Vancouver and the first sale is made in Eastern Canada. The lineup for the 1985 season includes the Blizzard Rocky Mountain sells its first aluminium production bike, the Stratos, and sells its first bikes internationally, shipping five bikes to BikeAction Germany. The result a Full Factory equipped frame set offering no compromise on the handling performance at a budget that fits your wallet, it wont save your marriage but it might keep you in the house instead of being banished to the shed Although at least your bike will be in there SMOOTHWALL Carbon AUTONOMOUS Braking SMOOTHLINK Suspension RTC Design Smoothwall carbon uses one of the world s most sophisticated carbon processes to build frames with industry leading stiffness-to-weight, ride quality, and durability. By using rigid internal molds, we are able to perfect the shape of the internal features and eliminate excess materials. We use different types of carbon in specific frame areas to maximize stiffness and impact resistance while minimizing overall weight. Autonomous braking makes you go faster by slowing you down more effectively. Other suspension systems squat under braking, causing a grip-slip phenomenon and losing traction. Our system provides more control by remaining neutral and active through the majority of travel. By balancing anti-rise, caliper counterrotation, and instantaneous inertial brake transfer values, Autonomous braking prevents grip-slip and keeps more travel available to soak up rough terrain. The hallmark of Smoothlink suspension is our ability to fine tune its characteristics for the intended use of each bike we design. There is no one-kind-fits-all to suspension design, and we work to hone variables like braking, antisquat, small-bump sensitivity, and end-stroke progression across a wide range of applications. Every riding style needs a different set of design principles that go beyond pidgeon-holing a bike by its chainstay length or headtube angle. Whether we re creating a versatile trail bike or a downhill race weapon, we follow our Ride Tuned Concept to make sure that key variables like wheel size, suspension travel, and geometry work together to optimize ride quality. FORM Alloy DESIGN SIZE SPECIFIC Tune Not all aluminum tubing is created equal. FORM alloy is the key to the ride quality our aluminum bikes are known for. We use premium 7000-series materials that meet our strict requirements, and each FORM tube is engineered for its specific purpose within our frames to ensure optimized strength, weight, and stiffness. As riders ourselves, we obsess over material quality, frame geometry, and suspension optimization to live up to the legendary ride quality we re famous for. We strive to create bikes with the perfect balance of all the variables not simply chasing isolated metrics like weight at the expense of other critical benchmarks. When it comes to shock tunes, size does matter. For each full suspension bike we make, our design team does custom shock tunes based on real world eld testing, because the world s best trails provide feedback that spreadsheets never could. Size Speci c Tune takes this a step further by adjusting the tune for each speci c frame size, from XS to XXL. Now riders of all sizes get the right balance of small-bump compliance, midstroke support, and end-stroke progressiveness. RMB 6061 Alloy ENGINEERING RIDE-4 / 9 TM Adjustability Our RMB 6061 custom alloy balances strength, weight, and value. The heart of every bike is its frame, and this tubing allows us to produce a high quality frame in an economical package. We place a massive emphasis on innovation, so it s no surprise that our R&D team includes some of the world s best mountain bike engineers. We work closely with our team of professional athletes in a rapid, agile feedback loop. It s not uncommon to run into riders like Thomas Vanderham out for a rip with our engineers data acquisition sensors strapped to their bikes and notepads stuffed into their packs. Our new RIDE-4 TM system uses a single chip insert to adjust the geometry on bikes that require more subtle changes. This allows for more precise adjustments and more isolated shock-tuning. Our patented RIDE-9 TM system uses two interlocking chip inserts to adjust geometry and suspension characteristics, allowing riders to tune their bikes to their specific riding styles, terrain, and weight. FORM Alloy PIPELOCK Collet System BC2 Pivots ABC Pivots There are advantages to both 26 and 27.5 wheels in gravity applications. The Equalized Wheel Concept allows riders to choose their preference without compromising steering dynamics. Other companies simply provide two axle positions, which negatively affects BB height and fork trail. Instead, our system uses a headtube spacer in conjunction with two rear axle positions to maintain optimized geometry and handling regardless of which wheel size is used. The Pipelock collet system expands radially and locks into the frame, creating the widest and most rigid pivot stance possible. Using Pipelock collets lowers front triangle pivot-weights while maximizing lateral stiffness. Lighter and stiffer than conventional bearing pivots, BC2 pivots are the next generation of our ABC system. Unlike other bushings, our patented system controls the contact of the bushing surfaces, reducing stiction and binding. BC2 pivots feature grease ports for effortless maintenance. Introducing a fully integrated, electric-assist mountain bike that takes our Altitude s legendary handling and ride quality and adds a compact, powerful drive system. The new Powerplay TM drive system was designed in parallel with the frame, delivering ultrashort chainstays, optimised suspension kinematics, super-low centre of gravity, and class-leading torque. The Powerplay TM drive system was born from our desire to push the boundaries of electric assist bikes. We knew from the project s outset that to design an electric mountain bike to our suspension and geometry standards, we would need to take a fresh approach. A low-mounted motor keeps the centre of gravity low and the entire system compact, while allowing for ultra-short chainstays and a bottom bracket that is integral to the frame. We use a high e ciency, three-phase brushless motor to provide class-leading torque and ultra quiet operation. To get instant power response on trail, we put the torque sensor between the chainring and the drive gear, and our 48v battery voltage allows for super fast charging. Designed by us in Canada, the Powerplay TM drive system is sleek, lightweight, and powerful. Ultimately, it s a drive system that allows us to deliver electric mountain bikes that ride like true mountain bikes.
