1 HANBURY MOTORSPORTS SEASON ENDING NEWSLETTER Tony s October 4 th feature win at Chemung Photo courtesy of Jeff Martz Despite many rain outs this past racing season the 2008 racing season for Tony Hanbury and the Hanbury Motorsports racing team has been an exciting and rewarding one indeed. It all started out at Southern Tier Speedworld at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City, NY in late February as Tony won Best in Show with his NASCAR Modified. Tony also had his car displayed at the CARQUEST Motorsports Expo in Syracuse and the Chemung Speedway Car Show that took place at the Arnot Mall in Horseheads in mid April. This past year saw Tony race weekly at two New York State sanctioned NASCAR facilities. On Friday nights Tony raced for co owners Josh Wilson and John Resus in a NASCAR Modified at the Spencer Speedway. Tony also raced his self owned Touring Modified in selected special races at Spencer this past season. Tony had a pretty good season at Spencer this past year in the NASCAR Modified and Touring Modified. In the Touring Modified division Tony won the Track Championship at Spencer, his first as a car owner. Tony won his first ever Touring Modified feature as a car owner back on June 27 th. That feature

2 win accomplished one of Tony s big goals for the year, winning a Modified feature with his self owned car. Along the way at Spencer Tony finished 3 rd ( twice ), 4 th, 9 th, and a disappointing 18 th in the Race of Champions Tour event when the rear end broke. But the consistent finishes along with the feature win was enough to win the Track Championship for Tony. In the NASCAR Modified division at Spencer Tony had some really good nights and some really bad nights and in the end those bad nights cost Tony the championship as he lost out by just 2 points to Buck Catalano. However Tony was able to win four NASCAR Modified features at Spencer in three different cars. As Tony won twice in the Wilson / Resus co owned car and once respectively in his self owned NASCAR Modified and his dad s self owned NASCAR Modified. Tony s wins at Spencer were on May 30 th, June 6 th, July 4 th, and September 5 th. Along the way at Spencer in the NASCAR Modified Tony finished 3 rd ( three times ), 4 th ( twice ), 6 th, 9 th, 10 th, 12 th, 13 th ( twice ), and 22 nd. All of these finished enabled Tony to be right in the thick of the point championship. Losing the points by only 2 was a tough pill to swallow for Tony as you re looking back at nights where something happened cost you the points you needed for the championship. The night that will haunt Tony from Spencer this past year was the 75 lap feature back on June 20 th. Tony was spun out early in the race and restarted last and raced his way back up through the field and was sitting in 3 rd with only a handful of laps remaining when the car ran out of gas. But overall it was a good season at the Spencer Speedway for Tony Hanbury. As for the majority of the nights Tony was racing with an under powered NASCAR Modified racecar on used rubber. His performance are a testament to Tony s driving ability and proves that you don t need to have high dollar equipment and new tires on the car each time out to be competitive. Sponsors on the Wilson / Resus car that Tony drove at Spencer are; Fred s Garage in Scottsville, NY, John Clifford Sales in Fairport, and the Avondale Pub in Avon, NY. For the second year in a row Tony Hanbury was the class of the NASCAR Modified field at the Chemung Speedrome as for the second year in a row Tony captured the Whelen All American Series NASCAR Modified Track Championship. This title vaulted Tony to his second consecutive Whelen All American Series NASCAR New York State Championship. Many thought that Tony couldn t better his 2007 season and in 2008 he did just that with 10 feature wins. This year Tony had to work much harder to accomplish his goals as his fellow competitors made it tougher on Tony this year. Many fellow drivers got better driving the tricky Chemung track along with updating their equipment. Still Tony had some hairy moments throughout the season as some of his fellow drivers figured if they couldn t catch the high flying Hanbury they were going to block or wreck him if they had the

3 opportunity. Many nights during the season Tony would be making pit stops to repair damage suffered on the track. After pitting and getting repairs made by his volunteer crew Tony had to race his way back up through the field. The finish ledger at Chemung showed feature wins on May 24 th, June 7 th, June 29 th, July 5 th, July 19 th, July 26 th, August 2 nd, August 30 th, September 7 th, and a non point win on October 4 th. All NASCAR Points feature wins came aboard the self owned Hanbury Motorsports NASCAR Modified while the non point win came in the Bob Hanbury owned car. Other finishes at Chemung included four second place finishes, two third place finishes, a 4 th and a 7 th. Tony ended up in 28 th in the National Whelen All American Series points. Tony also ran his self owned Touring Modified in the Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Tour show at Chemung. Tony led a good portion of the race after missing a shift on a restart earlier in the race. Tony didn t pit to change tires that hampered his finish and he ended up in ninth. SEPTEMBER REWIND 5th Spencer. The final race and final point s night of the year found Tony having a chance to win 2 track championships on this night. Tony pretty much had the Touring Modified title already in his back pocket. In their 30 lap feature Tony had problems in his heat race and this forced him to start last in the feature. Tony raced all the way up to finish third securing the Spencer Speedway Touring Modified Track Championship. This is a special track championship for me and my crew as it was our first ever together with me being the car owner said Tony. All of my sponsors, family, and loyal crew members all had a hand in this championship and that means so much to me. In the NASCAR Modified division on this night with Tony second in points he knew he had to sweep the racing events on this night and receive a little help along the way. Tony won his heat to gain valuable points and in the 35 lap feature he took the lead on lap 13 and cruised to his fourth Spencer NASCAR Modified feature win of the year. In the point battle Tony ended up 2 points from the title as Buck Catalano raced liked a veteran on this night and finished third giving him just enough points to win the title. I did everything I had to do tonight to give me a shot at winning the championship said Tony. But in the end we came up 2 points short. It took us some time to get the car going this year. I want to dedicate this win tonight to Josh Wilson, one of my owners of this NASCAR Modified. 7 th Chemung ran a special Sunday afternoon show after being rained out the previous evening. With Twin 25 lap features on the schedule, another 2 opportunities were at hand to increase his win totals for the year.

So I wasn t sure about passing Chuck Lohmeyer until he got loose coming out of turn four and that is the only mistake / opening I needed to get the lead.

4 In the first 25 lapper Tony started 8 th and took the lead with five laps to go to win his 9 th Chemung feature of the year. These old tires and I used them up pretty good getting around JR Kent said Tony. So I wasn t sure about passing Chuck Lohmeyer until he got loose coming out of turn four and that is the only mistake / opening I needed to get the lead. For the second feature Tony redrew fifth and in this quickly run feature Tony ended up second. I sure would have liked to sweep the features but you can t complain as we had a pretty good weekend with 2 wins, a second, and a third in four features. I think after today we have a big enough lead that we clinched the NASCAR Modified points here for the second year in a row. Tony was the defending champion of this race and he sure looked like he was ready to defend his title with an outstanding heat race performance. Tony started seventh in the heat which included cousin Patti and her husband Billy Ray Pruitt. Tony put on a clinic in the heat by going from third to first in the final lap to capture the heat race win. In the feature Tony found out quickly that his car was not on rails like it was in the heat. The car would tighten up after only a few laps of green flag racing conditions so Tony was settling in with the hope of a top five finish. Lady luck would shine down on Tony for the feature as all of the faster cars developed problems which knocked them from contention. All of this late race shuffling put Tony in the lead; however Tony was still fighting the tightening condition. This allowed Dan Kurzejewski to pass Tony with only a few laps to go for the lead and win.

5 Since this race was sanctioned by the SST Modified Tour a lengthy and detailed post race tech inspection was performed on the top five cars. This excellent tech inspection played a factor in the official outcome of the race. Nearly three hours after victory lane ceremonies Kurzejewski was disqualified for a multiple rule violations and the win for the second year in a row was awarded to Tony Hanbury. I was disappointed to finish second last night and all night long after the feature it bothered me that a car I raced against weekly passed and pulled away from me so easily said Tony. I have pretty good equipment and a great motor and when you get pulled by that much I figured that something had to be fishy on that car. After victory lane pictures Tony was very happy. I m glad that a strict inspection was done because now I know that they had some illegal stuff in that car. I ve raced against that car all year long and it beat me one night and now that gets me thinking that just maybe they were illegal all year long and they didn t get caught until last night. This is a big win for us as we defended our title from last year said Tony. We came prepared to race and have fun at the same time. 6 21 st Oswego Sunoco Race of Champions RoC Modified 200. In another interesting evening of racing at Oswego Tony Hanbury got some racing luck to go his way and after winning the night before. The finish on Saturday was icing to the cake. Tony started 27 TH and followed a few drivers up through the 40 car filed that enjoy making large holes when they pass someone. Tony stuck to these drivers back bumper and he moved quickly to the front. An excellent pit stop got Tony back out in pretty good shape and he raced his way into top eight quite easily. After another round of pit stops Tony found himself in fourth with only a handful of laps left. After the leader spun out Tony moved into third and despite being heavily pressured for the spot Tony finished third and earned the Tiger Tom Baldwin Hard Charger Award worth an additional $500. What a weekend for my self owned team and crew said the smiling Tony after the 200. We came here this weekend to have fun and get some good finishes and bring the cars home in 1 piece and that is exactly what we did. I m so happy right now not only for me, my family, my team, and my sponsors. But all of us proved that we can get the job done without any big money sponsor funding our racing operation. This is a family team with family money sponsoring us. 27 th Dunn Tire Raceway Park US Open for SST Modifieds. Tony was driving the Daryl Lewis, Sr. owned car that was a memorial car in honor of the late Don Pratt. Tony hot lapped the car the week before at Oswego and felt comfortable with the car. All of the racing luck that Tony had the week before at Oswego went the other direction at Dunn Tire. Tony was in serious contention for a top five finish when on the outside of another car. The car on the inside of Tony spun out it was determined by officials that Tony had something to do with the spin and sent Tony to the rear. Tony rallied back to a very disappointing 12 th place finish. I don t know who made the call whether it was track or SST officials said Tony. But in my opinion it was the wrong call, even the driver who spun asked me afterwards why I was at the rear with him. I had a good car, a definite top five car and a poor judgment call cost us that good finish.

After Oswego Tony took his NASCAR Modified engine back to Gail Clark Race Engines to be refreshened for the 2009 racing season. With this taking place Tony drove his dad s car on this night. The car was a little loose in the heat race but adjustments were made for the feature and after drawing the pole Tony was never headed as he led all laps to the easy feature win. It s a good way for us to end the racing season with a win said Tony. Our year was better than 2007 and I m happy about that. Now we re going to tear down all of the cars completely and check everything over to get ready for the 2009 racing season.

He had 16 wins, 5 second place finishes, 9 third place finishes, 4 fourth place finishes, a sixth, a seventh, 2 ninth s, a tenth, 2 twelfth s, 2 thirteenths, 2 eighteenths, and a 22 nd place finish. Tony had 34 top 5 finishes, 39 top 10 finishes, and 5 did not finish. Tony won the Whelen All American Series NASCAR Modified Track Championship at the Chemung Speedrome for the second year in a row. Also for the second year in a row Tony won the Whelen All American Series New York State Championship. Tony also won the Touring Modified Track Championship at the Spencer Speedway. Finally Tony ended up second in the Whelen All American Series NASCAR Modified Spencer Speedway track point standings. Tony ended up 28 th in National Whelen All American Series points and 22 nd in Overall Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Modified Tour points. SPONSORS
