Messac OB Race Robertson and Vaizey of Portsmouth Probable 1 st Open 1 st SE Section with Blazing 22 Our first race of the season was also a first for the Classic s new Convoyer Keith Mott. As you are aware Tony Kane retired at the end of last season after many years convoying due to his health not being too good around the birds. (Rumour has it he retired because his legs were getting shorter and he couldn t get in to the back of the transporter). Disappointingly birdage was well down on last year with only 275 members sending 2126 birds. With the North Easterly winds over the last few weeks being so tough on the birds I think everyone was hoping for calmer winds. Keith managed to cut the strings and liberate the birds at 9am in to a north west wind after waiting for the adverse weather to move in the channel. Returns seem very positive and with 252 members verifying their first birds I hope everyone had a good race. (There were a couple of members who didn t leave their name or code number so I was unable to add you on the provisional result). Please remember for each race, members who have already entered can send extra birds on the day of marking. Can I thank all the markers and helpers at both marking stations. With ETS now being used by 2/3 s of the members we could do with some more helpers at Frome who are willing to mark the ETS birds. If you are able to help please let Roy Christopher or myself know. A big thanks to Robbie and Louise Jones, Martin and Bill Norman for bringing the crates up from Frome to Salisbury and setting everything up ready. I have been asked to thank Keith Mott from lots of members for a brilliant 1 st race and that the birds looked well cared for.

Probable 1 st Open 1 st SE Section. Barry Robertson & Steve Vaizey of Portsmouth. (Steve s own words) I m still recovering from winning and the feelings great. The photo's taken this morning are one of Barry in the loft with the pigeon and the other being me outside on the left also holding our Messac Solent Fed winner last year. We are only back garden flyer's and last year won all Milton HS old bird averages and combined averages plus the Solent Fed old bird averages, 3 longest race average and combined averages with just 10 cocks and 11 hens to start with. This year we decided to fly more classics then club, this meant not sending in the club every week as again we only had 13 cocks and 10 hens to race this year, so its a great start to the season. Our pigeons are flown on the roundabout system so we can race both hens and cocks. The pigeon is mostly Vandenbeele bred by myself his lines are Wolfgang (half brother to Wittenbuik and Sissi one side and Mike Ganus Topo and The Godfather the other) His dam has bred 2 hens that have bred 2 hotspot one loft winners for myself as Van Vaizey and she is also grandam of our BBC 2nd Open Messac pigeon Husky in His preparation before was every Solent Fed race and last weeks BBC Vire for which he's on the result (think 700+ something) our 2nd pigeon. Barry Robertson. Steve Vaizey & Barry Robertson.

Probable 2 nd Open 2 nd SE Section. Derek Human of Petersfield. I was really pleased to be 2 nd Open CSCFC Messac, I had a bad start to the season because I have lost my best pigeons around the loft due to attacks by the sparrow hawk. This gallant yearling hen bred at my son Adrian and my stock loft is out of a son of "Any Distance" my 2007 NFC Tarbes winner. It s her 2 nd race of the season as she went to Falaise with the BICC. As a youngster she went to CSCFC and NFC she was sent being called to nest. Thanks to everyone who work hard for the CSCF club, also Clare and Martin Norman. Good luck to you all for the rest of the season.

Derek Human. Probable 3 rd Open. Brian & Viv Wall of Havant. Brian and Viv take third place with another bird close up. In fact they had two together, one went straight in the other messed about. Brian s first two birds were hens which he had raced North to get fit with the intention of turning them South for the Nationals and Classics. It certainly worked for this partnership. The first bird is a blue Kees Busua hen bred from stock which Brian had from friend Ed Sittner of Vegas and Belgium. Brian has high hopes for these birds. Brian Wall. Probable 4 th Open 1 st SW Section. Mel & Sue King of Blandford. Mel and Sue had two birds drop together racing to opposite ends of the loft. Nearest bird to reach was the D.CH widowhood cock called Stourcrest

Imhotep, half brother to Amonet 1 st Open C.S.C.F.C Ramsgate 2007 Bred from the same dam, Daughter of their 1 st Open N.F.C Nantes winner. Sire of D.CH cock Stourcrest Imhotep is bred from Eric Limbourg lines of Jonge Vooruit and Black Opium. 2 nd over the pad was the Blue W/F Vandenabeele cock Stourcrest Pericleas 3 rd Sect 6 th Open Son of Stourcrest Virgil 1 st Open B.I.C.C Falaise when paired to a daughter of Aganemon, Dam of many winners including 1 st Fed & 1 st Sect etc. Mel and Sue King. Probable 5 th Open 2 nd SW Section. Scott Storie of Poole. I timed a 3 year old chequer widowhood cock of Jim Biss bloodlines. He was my timer from BBC Vire National the week before being 53 rd Open (Provisional Result). He also was 88 th Open Classic Bergerac as a 2 year old. His Sire is a son of Basher 1 st National Marseille for Jim Biss. His Dam is the Fowler hen my No.1 Stock Hen bred by Fowler Family from Leek, being a granddaughter of Crack Perpignan. She is Dam to my 3 rd National BICC and Grandaughter to 2 nd BBC National and Dam of Classic and National positions including Tarbes National.

Scott Storie. Probable 1 st NE Section. Eric Higginbottom of Sandhurst. Because of the birds breeding I am going to call him Expectations, as he is bred from a Son of one of Peter Fox s (Syndicate Lofts) Top Breeding Pairs. The Young Couple x a bird I had on loan from Young Bill Hague of Doncaster, from a Daughter of Figo from Antoon & Hilde Reynaerts, thanks for the loan Bill!!. As a young bird along with his nest mate, he was lost from a training flight. Five weeks later he dropped on the landing board, looking the worse for wear. A week after, his nestmate done the same, looking just as bad. Alarm bells started to ring as that was unusual for two nest mates. I decided to let them have a good moult and see what they could do as Yearlings. As a Yearling I gave him Three Channel races, the third race he returned with half a back wing missing because of Hawk Injury, no more racing that season! As a two year old Messac was his first race of the season, with it being a stiff nose ender and the early positions taken along the coast. His NE Section win and well up in the Open, I thought was outstanding for his first race, hence the name Expectations. In the last two years I have had 3 Section Winners bred down from Peter Fox (Syndicate Lofts), 2 Section Winners bred down from the Loaned Stock from Bill Hague s Figo Reynaert s x Vandenabeele. (thank you to Sharron Jorro for supplying this write up).

Eric Higginbottom. Probable 2 nd NE Section. Brian Keegan (R Keegan & Son) of Sandhurst. Sire: Swastika, Direct Frans Verheyn. Now owned by my good friend John Murray from Liverpoool. Sire of Several Winners. Dam: Inbred Hofkens Hen from Hollywood Lofts Original Hofken lines. This Blue Hen raced on Windowhood, having only her second race this year. She has been consistent as a young bird and yearling. Fed on Gem Plus and Gem Super Widowhood Corn. I have been a strong advocate of Brian and Viv Wall s Gem Products & Corn, which I have used now for 15 years and haven t yet found anything better, Thanks to Brian and Viv. I would like to thank Clare and Martin for doing a great job with the CSCFC, also well done to Keith Mott and his team on a very good 1 st race with the Classic. Brian Keegan. (I think Brian misheard me when I said I wanted a picture of him with his pigeon!!). Probable 3 rd NE Section. Tony Crook of Thatcham.

Tony races with his silent partner Bert. They race all Staf Van Reets bought in from six different top fanciers in the Country which they blended together to make a family of their own. Tony and Bert had two drop together and clocked within 9 seconds of each other. The first pigeon timed which is 3 rd section narrowly missing out on 2 nd section by a whisker is from the Marden lines. This cock bird has taken a few cards previously but was always beaten by his loft mates. Bert said he was bouncing all week around the loft and this was telling them he was ready. 2 nd in the clock number 24 is from Mark Cauldwell lines and has also taken 4 x 1 st s. Only 3 weeks ago they topped the Solent Federation taking 1 st and 2 nd. The Winner has the same Sire but different Dam as their 3 rd section and last year Tony and Bert won their section from the National Messac race with another brother to number 24. The corn fed is Bamfords Super Express and this is given all round. Probable 1 st NW Section. Geoff & Catherine Cooper of Peasedown St John. Geoff and Catherine Cooper timed their three year old dark chequer cock Ridge to win 1 st NW section, provisional 26 th open in Saturdays race. They were delighted because with the amount of west in the wind they did not think they would have a chance in the section, but as has often happened in the past, when there is a head wind for the duration of the race the Cooper's birds seem to always come to the fore. Ridge is no stranger to winning top prizes, he has previously won 1 st Bristol Fed Messac, 67 th open, 2 nd Section G Alencon National Flying Club, 1 st Paulton HS Messac, 1 st High Littleton FC, 114 th BBC Poitiers, 125 th National Flying Club Fougeres, 24 th Section G National Flying Club Alencon, 143 rd National Flying Club Fougeres, 227th CSCFC Lessay and 335 th National Fying Club Saintes. This is fantastic short to middle distance racing from a bird which is from a family famous for their results from over 500 miles, though if you studied the results of this family you would see that they win from 45 miles all the way through to 650 miles. He is from Geoff's family of birds which are based on the Deweerdts with a few top introductions direct from the best pigeons in Europe. Ridge is a grandson of Magnus who won 4 th Nat., 19 th Int. Dax; 36 th Int Perpignan; 33 rd Int Dax plus many other top International prizes. Ridge is also a grandson of Day Break who won a NFC Certificate of Merit for 3 times in the top 100 from the NFC's longest race and 6 th open CSCFC Pau.

Day Break is a half brother to the dam of Mark Gilbert's International winner. The Grandam of Ridge is Miss Pau, who flew Pau International as a yearling. Ridge, racing on the widowhood system, has flown four inland races this season and this was his first channel race. Geoff has nominated him for the National Flying Club Single Bird Nomination Tarbes International competition, organised by Paul O'Leary, but Catherine is feeling a little nervous about sending him to Tarbes as he races so well at the shorter distances, but if Ridge is right then Geoff is confident that he will do well. Ridge. Probable 2 nd NW Section. Peter Quainton of Chippenham. Peter has been flying with the Chippenham Club since 2001 when he decided to take up pigeon racing again, a hobby he had enjoyed with some success as a young man living in Oxford. His dedication and total commitment to the sport has made him top flyer in the Chippenham Club every year since joining.

96 SE1542 Mr & Mrs T Green Ashurst SW543 Tony Swain Dorchester NW625 D F & H A Cook Newent NW106 C Howse & D Parsons Devizes SW680 F Bloor & Son Charlton Convoyer s Report. I met up with my driver, Mike Clarke, at the Boxhill Transport yard in Capel at noon on Wednesday and with the early weather information to hand I anticipated a great weekend of Classic racing out of France. We proceeded to make 110 mile drive down to Wanstrow in Somerset to pick up the Classic s trailer, after which went on to the Frome marking station, where we filled up the transporter s water tank and cleaned out the water system. We spent the night at Frome and unloaded 40 crates ready for marking on Thursday morning. Early on the day of marking, we layed out water on the empty side of the transporter so the birds could get a drink as they were loaded and on the completion of marking we left the Frome at 12.45hrs, arriving at the Salisbury marking station at 13.35hrs. All the birds were watered at the Salisbury marking stations and I must say looked in very good order in the club s crates. We loaded up the Salisbury birds and left the station at 16.00hrs, arriving at Portsmouth docks at 17.05hrs. After booking in the transporter was levelled and the birds were watered before departure for Caen. The proposed time of departure was 11.00hrs, but because of an industrial dispute, the Ferry was delayed and left Portsmouth at 02.00hrs, arriving in France just after 08.00hrs on Friday. We had a good run through France and arrived at the Messac marina liberation site at 11.15hrs where the birds were watered on arrival. I was very impressed with liberation site at Messac and will be doing a full report with photos in ON THE ROAD within the next couple of weeks. I fed the convoy at hrs and must say they looked in great condition and ready for the job in hand. I telephoned my race advisor, Anner Smith, at 20.00hrs and he gave me a favourable weather report for the English Channel and mainland England for the Saturday, with the main factors being sunshine and light North Westerly winds. I awoke at hrs on race day to a virtually clear blue sky and the sun coming up strong in the East. Although the weather condition were perfect in France, I delayed the liberation for a short time as I received reports of heavy cloud and showers in the English Channel, which were moving away quickly to produce the perfect racing day. Weather conditions were perfect at Messac so I liberated

the 2,126 birds at 09.00hrs in a very light North West wind and the convoy cleared the site instantly. I would like to say a special thanks to my assistant convoyer, Mike Clarke, who drove in France for this, my first time with the CSCFC pigeons. His driving was excellent and I must congratulate him on his general good attitude and hard work with the pigeons and the club s transporter. With excellent conditions on the day, I anticipated a very good race, so I hope the members had good returns and enjoyed our first Classic race of the 2010 season. Messac liberation site. Patron s Cup. George Tribble and Tony Male are the only under 21 members left in the Patron s cup. All they need to do is time in from our young bird race. Our next race is from Poitiers on Saturday 29 th May. Closing date for posting entries is Saturday 22 nd May. This race is our Yearling Derby race sponsored by Gem Supplements. Entries in to the Yearling Derby are 1 per bird unlimited. Also on this race is our charity nomination for Macmillan Cancer Care at 50p per bird unlimited. Classic Double. The Classic Double deadline date has been extended to Saturday 22 nd May. We now have 23 members entered in this nomination. If you would still like to participate please let me know. This nomination becomes active for the Poitiers

Race. Don t forget the top two birds on your Part B are your two nominated pigeons prize money paid out for each race for Poitiers, Tarbes and Bergerac is as follows: 1 st 325, 2 nd 175, 3 rd 100, 4 th 50, 5 th 50 and 6 th 50. Clare Norman.
