Rod Knock Club & Racing News August 2016 Worst Mistakes you can make on track (from someone who s done almost them all) Sometimes going to a track day is like a first date. You plan and dream and anticipate, but surprises and challenges are twists and turns of the reality of the experience. Some surprises you have control over, some not so much. Your reaction to zigs when you plan for zags is what counts. Is it a paralyzing moment or are you fluently (dare I say, happily?) adapting as the day unfolds? Plan to have a smooth, successful track day by researching the schedule, the rules, the sponsoring organization and the track layout within which you ll be working. Read up on what other successful people have done and brung to get safely through the day with smiles and satisfaction. Keep in mind that there are pitfalls that even the most experienced amongst us may have to manage through. Unless we can respond decisively from thoughtful preparation, they ll be the event spoilers we ll kick ourselves about later. Many of these evils sneak up on us and we don t realize they ll overtake and interfere with our rationale thinking until they do. It s a moment that may induce panic, paralysis or a mistake that hopefully doesn t happen behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. Best, simplest advice when challenges are thrown at you: Start with a deep breath, often called a cleansing breath. Clear out whatever was in your fore-brain to make room for calm, deliberations of options. Pitfalls, Challenges, Surprises.Doesn t matter what you call them. They re simple things, really, that occur in everyday life, but can have a greater impact during the intense, rich experience at a race track. Here s today s DO: SLEEP WELL PREPARE WELL USE YOUR MIRRORS CONCENTRATE COMMIT HYDRATE LEARN & IMPROVE GO FAST, BRAKE HARD DON T: OIL THE TRACK MAKE A FIRE BUMP SOMEONE OFF COME OFF ANGRY PUT ANYONE AT RISK FORGET LUGNUTS IGNORE FLAGS USE ALCOHOL list: Distractions - Mind is not clearly on-task, guests or visitors to impress, resulting in overdriving, trying to catch up or make up for a driving error while zoned out shake out the cobwebs.talk to yourself through the course take command, calculate, repeat successful behavior Multitasking - Doing too much where your primary focus is lost. Splitting your concentration so nothing gets done well..event chairman also competing on track..be one thing at a time shut out the other roles while behind the wheel this is why you re really there Pressure - From others, from yourself. Late, car set-up, competitive concerns, day before behavior = Hurried actions, Overreactions, forgetting, Missing details, overlooking checklist items..e.g., forgetting to cinch your helmet or belts. Assuming - Every little detail depends on someone tending to it. Clear team responsibilities with checklists to accomplish each time, every time. Even if you re the only crew member! Post schedules and readiness lists on the side of your tow vehicle. Check em off as you do each item. Packing - Forgetting stuff is more than an irritant = show stopper, dangerous, distracting - Create/copy and use checklists Bivouac/Pit setup - Be close to announcements and friendly resources (track & driver assist comrades) CONSIDER: - Overdriving tires & suspension = not smooth = scrub speed = lower times - Not looking ahead = field of vision too close = not optimum set up for next turn - Slow down, you ll go faster = process the onrushing view & visual cues cleaner Page 1

The President Speaks Dear NSSCC Members Dear NSSCC Members, Hello!!!! I hope your month of July was a good one! Ours here at the NSSCC was a great one! I would like to thank all of the volunteers, members, competitors, crew members, and spectators that came out to enjoy the Old Glory Grand Prix II that was held over July 4 th weekend at Blackhawk Farms Raceway. We were gifted with great weather and maintained a great racing atmosphere. Our race weekend was a tremendous success and we couldn t have done it without everyone s support either at the track, or the support leading up to the event either by word of mouth being spread or by social media shares. We had a total of 43 registered for HSAX and 120 registered for W2W Club Racing, with 37 taking the flag for HSAX and 119 taking the green flag for the W2W Club races. I personally thank everyone that is involved in this club for helping this take place. I believe our social media promotion has helped us out tremendously as well as our updated artwork and our monthly newsletters have helped spread our message to new and old members alike. THANK YOU!!! Now, on to our next events as a club. We are hosting two banquets in the off season. Our own NSSCC Banquet is set up to be hosted on Saturday, December 3, 2016, in Crystal Lake, IL. Our second event in the off season will be the hosting club for the MCSCC Banquet. We have just finalized the banquet and it will be at The Ridge Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Saturday January 21, More information will be made through Constant Contact s and our social media Facebook page. The Ridge is the same group that helped Lakeshore Sports Car Club host the banquet last year. They wanted to host it again this year, however this time, instead of the event being held at two different locations, it will be held at the hotel in their newly redesigned ballrooms. Since we will be at one location, there will be no need to go to two different locations for We chose this spot after exhaustive searches at other venues in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. This was the best option given its central location to all of the clubs within the MCSCC family. So, mark your calendars for: December 3, 2016 the NSSCC Awards Banquet and January 21, 2017 the MCSCC Awards Banquet. So, in an effort to encourage faster and deeper understanding of the way we seasoned veterans talk, each issue will offer explanations of a couple of terms you may hear us throw around. Novice: Not so much that you are new to racing, but new to a genre: i.e., an accomplished AXr can move to W2W and still be considered a novice for licensing and track observation. It is not a put-down! A fancy term for rookie. Heel & Toe: Early European race cars had accelerator pedals hinged on the bottom. Drivers blipped the throttle to match revs downshifting into a corner by twisting their right foot to the left to brake with toes, press/blip the accelerator with their heel. Now accelerator pedals are hinged at the top, but the term is still used, even though the right foot is now vertical, braking with the left side, rolling on throttle with the right side. A pretty doggone smooth operation kept drivers actively engaged with the passion they brought that day... No sunburns, but smiles all around! Page 5

3 Questions Member Profile John Churchill NSSCC Members can answer some questions that help describe their racing passion and history and offer commentary about their cars and experiences. John Churchill, Last seen in a silver Honda Civic Si in HSAX SR and Pace Car at Road America shares reflections on his storied past this month. It all started when I turned 16 as a Junior in high school, finally given the privilege of DRIVING TO SCHOOL. So, I bought a 1955 Ford for about $ in It was a 6- cylinder, 3 On-The-Tree manual trans. One of my best friends had a 1963 Impala 409 SS. WOW! What a machine! That car is what really got me interested in performance cars! Soooo, how could I get my 55 Ford to perform?..on a budget? With help from friends, I managed to get a few mods done, so I could take it to the track. We installed a dual exhaust, a modified intake manifold to house three 1- barrel carburetors and adjusted the front suspension to put more weight on the rear of the car for a good drag racing launch. The suspension adjustment was pretty basic = rubber spacers inserted in the coil springs. The most significant mod was the removal of the 3-On-The-Tree and the installation of a magnificent HURST 3-speed floor shifter! Wow! I now had a pretty cool car that (with help from my dash-mounted Sun Tachometer) I actually turned the Quarter -Mile in about 16+ seconds. The photos shown here were taken at the now- defunct US30 Dragstrip in Schererville, Indana. Those were the days! I also ran at the Indoor Drag Races at the International Amphitheater in Chicago in 1965! A photo of that event is included here as well. So after several years college, military, marriage, raising 3 kids, I got back into racing when my neighbor invited me to join him at Blackhawk Farms in the mid-90 s. WOW!! Road Racing NOT Drag Racing! I was hooked immediately! My first car at BFR was a 96 Pontiac Grand Prix - (front-wheel drive, 6 cylinder, automatic). My BFR Instructor was John Banas who called my Pontiac the Cruise Ship! The photo shows me staging for a run. The Pontiac was fun, but not very fast so I bought a new 2000 Camaro SS without question the most fun I ve ever had! No more worries about speed the question was could I handle this beast? I did for several years. I ran it at Road America and managed to hit about 145mph on that long front straight! A couple pics of my Camaro are included here. After I gave up the Camaro, I needed a fun car that I could drive in the winter so I got a Honda Civic Si certainly not as fast as the Camaro, but still a lot of fun to drive! I had the pleasure of using it as a Pace Car at one of our W2W events at Road America again a LOT OF FUN! But the urge to go faster has struck again; so I traded my Honda Civic for WHAT?.A Honda CRV? Yes, I guess I ll admit I m getting older and wanted a vehicle that is a lot more comfortable than my Civic Si. The urge to go fast is still there, but I m still adjusting my retiree income to where I can afford another performance car. Corvette? Mustang?.don t know for sure, but hopefully it won t be too much longer! Meanwhile, I am enjoying my Instructor duties with Midwestern Council. I get a real kick out of helping the newbies learn to go fast safely! See you at the track! The Camaro & Honda are as good looking as they are fast as evidenced by the photos. Also, you may have noticed the number 50 keeps showing up on my cars. Who knows what magical ride it ll be on next? From the Editor: It should be noted by all that high school DRAG RACING was a very common beginning point for many Midwestern car fanatics that have ended up in NSSCC and MCSCC road racing! Page 6

Rod Knock Tech Tip: Clogged Paint Cans Complaints abound as unused paint is tossed into the land fills across the nation. Economic and ecological disaster results. Isn t there anything one can do to make sure all of the paint is used up in a rattlecan before disposal? Articles and letters to Grassroots Motorsports are very instructive on this subject most with the common theme of how to keep the nozzles from clogging, thereby keeping them functional until the can is truly empty of useable paint. I ll try to summarize suggestions that surfaced, but be careful of some which sound a bit messy, risky, or just necessitate good cautionary cleaning before pointing the spray can at your Ferrari. Our slogan is Have a Clog-Free Life. There seems to be disagreement on the value and economics of an inverted clearing spray. One view says never did it out of fear of using up the propellant prematurely while the other view is convinced that turning upside down and spray until clear dependably flushes out the dip tube, valve, and nozzle for reliable, repeat useage. Cleaning the nozzles after use had common threads, usually soaking or passing a solvent or WD40 through the nozzle-either by placing them onto the cleaner can or using the red straws to blast through the nozzle passages. There was even a suggestion to make a tool - 2 brake cleaner nozzles connected with a red straw as a bridge between a solvent can & target paint can. Hmmmm. Push down both nozzles for a second sending a cleaner charge into the paint can, clearing out any thickened paint sludge in the paint can dip tube. Shake can well before next use. Hmmmm. That certainly raises some questions in my mind. That method aligns with several opinions that old paint cans or improperly mixed materials lead to clogged nozzles due to thickened material forced up the dip tube to the exit passages. Advice is to shake a can for more than a minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. If not, the solvents may be used before the pigment solids. Also, swirl the ball around for several minutes to ensure a thorough mix. To properly ready a long-unused can of paint, shake it vigorously for 2 minutes the day before its use, then store it upside down overnight, re-shaking it according to instructions the day to paint. The way you store your paint cans came up frequently. Rotate spray cans by periodically turning them upside down for a while, as in weeks or months. Paint separates with heavier ingredients settling to the bottom. They may rise up (capillary action?) into the dip tube. After long storage in the upright position the first spray forces thick ingredients through small nozzle orifice, clogging the small passages in the nozzle. To avoid this, store cans on their side, dot up so dip tube end is up, in the thinner liquefied propellant. Dot up? Make sure the nozzle points towards the dot on the top of the can as you use it, as the directions say. The red or black dot on the rim is there to indicate where the end of the dip tube is located. A specific recommendation said to use Eastwood s PRE Painting Prep by swapping its nozzle with the dirty paint can nozzle to clear it. Don t reinsert cleaned nozzles when storing the cans. Replace them as needed. Spray shots to the can holes with WD40 or brake cleaner may help, too. Good Luck to us all!...ed Bonus Rod Knock Tech Report: Back-up Cameras Help? The Washington Post reports: Back-up cameras haven t stopped people from hitting stuff. From the Daily Herald, Despite the growing prevalence of back-up cameras, federal data shows that this technology hasn t significantly cut down on cars backing into people and causing them harm. That research on so-called back-over incidents comes as the NHTSA moves to make back-up cameras standard and presses auto makers to add a bevy of new technologies, from automatic braking to lane collision warnings, to even entry-level cars to reduce accidents on the road. Back-up cameras have been around longer than other car safety tech, so the federal government has years of data on their impact. Between 2008 and 2011, the most recent years for which data was made available by NHTSA, back -up cameras more than doubled from 32 percent to 68 percent of all new cars sold. But injuries fell less than 8 percent, from about 13,000 down to 12,000. The improvement in safety has been very gradual from year to year. The fatality rate has improved somewhat, dropping 31 percent over the same period. 1. cap: a friend of Odysseus entrusted with the education of Odysseus son Telemachus 2. a: a trusted counselor or guide b: TUTOR, COACH men-tor-ship \-,ship\ NSSCC Mentor available: \ men-to(e)r, ment-er \ n [L,fr.Gk Mentor] n 3. a: colloquial v NSSCC usage i.e., [to mentor] of or pertaining to darn valuable insight and assistance of mind, body, and vehicle to promote safe, fast, fun racing b: a strong breath mint n Mentor@nsscc.org can connect you with an experienced club member that can answer, obfuscate, and open horizons. 8 A Virgin Again. A first-hand report on Monday July 4 th HSAX participation, Old Glory Grand Prix II.Larry Noble I ve done this before. I am not a newbie at Blackhawk. I should do well. I ve been racing for a while. I am a semirespected member of NSSCC, after all. I have a new car. This one s front wheel drive. I ve driven it aggressively but not in full attack mode yet. It s HSAX, not W2W. It s all new this time. I am apprehensive. All new rules and regulations I need to heed, complicated a bit by HPDE routines in the morning and HSAX in the afternoon. Even registration is different than the USMail routine I followed so long ago. Number assignment and display are just one set of important details to get right. And, once on-site, the number I was granted (and had made into vinyl stickies) through motorsportreg.com was not available to me on race day. I m not sure I can handle surprises. But, it s time to soldier on. I wanted to be early to tech inspection to check off that step. But, events on Sunday night resulted in no HSAX/HPDE evening registration, therefore, no tech sheet. At least I was first at the tech barn. I just came to the dance after it was cancelled. Helping out the following morning s registration activities in the sign-in shack actually made me feel like I was more in the way than anything.but because of the extraordinary high number of non-pre-registered drivers, there was some value in having me do menial things behind the scenes. Unfortunately, that early-in-the-day excitement got me to the tech barn at the last minute and I ended up being just about the last car through tech inspection. Then I found out I didn t fill in the tech sheet correctly. My confidence that I had command of my day was now completely crushed. HSAX race day routines have little in common with the W2W stuff I remember. Maybe I m getting too old. Y know, the old dog and those dang new tricks. But, again, I Next Rod Knock Issue: How Much Tire Do You Need? soldiered on. After all, I was still valuable as NSSCC s photographer for the day. One of the critiques I ve had with my Focus ST is I cannot heel & toe. The placement of the pedals from the Ford engineering and assembly folks have made it impossible for me to bridge my foot across the brake and accelerator pedals to slick shift during street driving. Very frustrating. My 2003 Focus was perfectly aligned and h&t Bill Oakes photo functional, so I wondered if the extra sensitivity and bite from the new ST brakes was a grand design for a pedal alignment that would only become h&t optimal under the hard braking of track conditions. I would find out today. No, I wouldn t. I was so psyched out by correct car placement and finding the line that the thought of heel&toe experimentation simply evaporated from my consciousness. I instead chose the default technique of settling for the turbo s thrill-shot boost to blinding acceleration by leaving it in 3 rd gear, not fumbling with driveline shock by seeking the 2 nd gear booster rockets. What could it hurt? What could it hurt? Time, you dummy. How bad could it be? Uh, wait til you see the results sheets dummy. OK, well I won t do that again. I will now try to figure out how to work the go-fast pedal into position for real race car driver action. Third gear works wonders for smooth delivery of traction and confidence in road conditions, but it is not a valid competitive driving strategy. Oops. Now, lest ye think that was my only issue.. I remember the late, wonderfully succinct Ross Fosbender instruct- ing Either your foot is all the way down on the gas or all the way down on the brake. I didn t do that either. I was too hesitant as I approached any/ all turns, at first. That served to frustrate some of my fellow intermediate drivers during the HPDE morning sessions. I was good at pointing them by in the straights, though. I just didn t have the go-fast confidence in the tires or the car yet. I did get better as the day progressed, but, alas, the end-ofday time sheets are the final determiner of just how large my cajones are. I guess I was concerned about driving my $25k car home that evening. Then I realized that my car was worth about a ¼ of what some of the other fine automobiles were worth on the track today. OK, now I m really getting embarrassed. But I pressed on. Besides, I needed to take more pictures. The afternoon timed runs were much better for my mental health. I was aggressive. I was quick. The tires were biting. I was hitting apexes. I was masterful. It also turned out that for AS that day, I was slow. Geez, will I ever get something right? I was grading myself as a B+ as I was driving the track in a flurry of turns and feet movements and hands ablaze while deep breathing through my mouth. Each run was faster than the last. OK, at least that s a good thing to say. But, here we go referencing the results sheet again. Turns out I was at best a C-, Dang it. Nancy Mizura photo There s gotta be a way to blame the car. I guess it shouldn t have surprised me that the standard ST seats that seem to do so well for street duty did Continued.page 9 Page 8

Virgin continued from page 8 not keep my butt planted during the rapid transitions a track day throws at you. I found myself knee-bracing and holding on to the steering wheel for body position in addition to steering control far too much. Ford s Reccaro option seemed like a good idea now. And, of course, the last time I was on the track I had a 5-point seatbelt system securing my anatomy. Aw c mon. That s just whining. I quit racing after 4 timed runs while most of the field stuck it out for six. I was plum tuckered out. I had expended most of my usable energy, and my judgment was that any further track antics had a higher probability of disaster. Concentration had peaked and I didn t think times would decrease significantly more than what I d already done. Oh how my heart aches I have a 1981 VW Scirocco in my garage that I have been attempting to get back on the road for a long time. Our family, which grew up in Detroit no less, owned a VW Bug and a VW window Van. I raced a Formula Vee for 3 years. Oh, Gott in himmel, what did they do? What did they do?? Their reputation was unsoiled. Reliability and fun factor was appealing. Value for the dollar was irreproachable. Hoards of believers held deep loyalties to their Wolfsburg ownership. Some even were diesels. But something was amiss and it was about to hit the fan. After the revelation and the stunned silence within the community, the reality started to set in. The only bigger scandal lately was the Takata airbag mess. So, in a dueling settlements legal atmosphere the news was Recycled Wisdom: If you drink, don t park. Accidents cause people. The day was over for me, now I d have to see printed proof of how I did compared to the other drivers in AS. And, as well expressed before: Dang it! So, my return to the track after my 2005 experiment in a CFF Tiga perfectly placed me back into the wonderfully mediocre position of just being glad I got off track before I hurt someone. Sure, I had fun mixed with the fear, but now I have to go to my dentist (Jim Waldman, remember?) so he can repair my new clench-pressure shattered teeth after scaring myself with the reality of braking down into corner one from 120 while deciding which gear I ll try this time. Some questions still confound the best minds of our time. slowly getting to the public and owners to answer the question, Now What?. On July 26th a federal judge gave the preliminary OK to a $15 billion settlement of the clever, but apparently illegal, US EPA emissions dodging software. Fine: $10B to buyback or repair 475,000 VW/Audi 2L diesels and $5-10K to each owner, plus almost $5B for environmental and zero-emissions stuff. Whew. Buy-back is determined by September 18, 2015 NADA clean tradein price book value. That was the date the cheating became public. And your payment for your trouble is larger if you owned the car before that date. The fix is not yet formalized, but the notifications and subsequent activity is set to begin in the fall, but you can wait until September 1, 2018 to decide to fix or buyback as long as you don t exceed 12,500 miles@yr. Leasing? I hope it s with VW Credit. No other word. Unknowns are key here. Legal approval, the fix, the economics of your choice, trade-in? On hold. Gotta fix the new ones, too, yet. Lots of details.
