1 Rod Knock Club & Racing News June 2016 A Problem: Race the Car I Have & Love?..or.. Buy a Car to Race & Win? Different strokes for different folks. People race for varied reasons. Those consumed with the fire to win will seek out the perfect performance solution. Drivers out to savor the experience of a lifetime may take a completely different tack. Brand loyal and want to fly your colors? There s an opportunity (a class) for everyone. Which came first: The chicken or the egg? Do you have a car, or do you need to get one? Somewhere along your path to the track you ll need to determine in what Class you ll compete. Are your aspirations for a real race car or will you stay closer to your daily driver to get your thrills? The size of the risk you are prepared to take may help determine the car and the class. Maybe smaller bites are better at first? Bigger, faster and louder often means more complexity, a real trailer encampment and a larger support team at the track. Read that as more money. Planning to buy something and turn it into a track Classes, They say Promote Fair Play.. True, to a large extent. Car Classifications group cars, makes and models, based on their mathematically calculated similar performance potential. That is intended to maintain a somewhat level playing field so one make or model doesn t turn out to dominate. But, it does happen. Occasionally as a season progresses it will reveal an advantaged platform, body or motor within a class producing skewed results. Of course, that may assist a purchase decision that s been smoldering. More likely it will cause MCSCC officials to rethink classification for next year. The ultimate car classification exercise that promotes equal me- monster? Make sure you have a build target in mind and religiously stick to the rules. The stewards (and your competitors) are watching. New cars bring out the close examination notebooks, and rightly so. Remember, safety is paramount to the Club. Legitimacy is paramount to competitors. In any case, you ll soon spend what you consider way too much time thinking about cars & classes & rules & specifications. It s OK. We ve all been there. We re still smiling....ed chanical performance is the Spec or Formula or one car make classes. Rules define what can and can t be done so it s the driver that makes the difference on track. The success of these race car classes speak for themselves. Turnouts for races at national championships, for example, Spec Miata and Formula Vee, are impressive, fiercely competitive and real crowd pleasers. Speed differentials between classes are prominently displayed on track, and that s why like classes are grouped to be on track together. Rear view mirror discipline and passing caution is safetycritical by all drivers occupying the track for the duration of a race in order to respect faster cars racing each other in their race within a race. Speed differentials within a class can arise when drivers discover legal speed secrets or are just better drivers that are able to extract more performance out of their cars. And that is what it s all about: Figuring out how to win, legally, within the rules. So, as you work through the maze of cars and classes, figure out where you ll begin that best suits your circumstances, determine what changes are most important (largest bang for buck) to make within your class, and understand the rules that both limit and offer creative opportunity to gain that competitive edge on track. Watch, learn from experts and talk to fellow NSSCCrs. Page 1

So, in an effort to encourage faster and deeper understanding of the way we seasoned veterans talk, each issue will offer explanations of a couple of terms you may hear us throw around. Treadwear Rating: This code on the sidewall of all tires describes the tire s service longevity and tread life. Normal people want a high number so their tires last longer. HSAX racers want a low number for sticky traction. 140 is a threshold number for HSAX Street Tire classes. Transponder: The world, and racing, is computerized. The days of stopwatches and thumbs are over. Now the sensors at the start/finish line recognize a car s signal, compute track times, laps, collecting data from that radio signal device attached to the front of a race car. restored a Lola t and won a trophy at the Masterpiece with it and just recently sold it to Pat Smith. Scott is his own selfsponsor, his business being car and racing related making perfect sense to headline his racing effort. In fact, he was apologetic for taking so long getting his profile info to the Rod Knock, because, as he put it, Hey Larry sorry I've been working kind of long hours to get everyone on the road for the weekend. See, a nice guy! I've been racing since 2002, it's been a great ride. I won my 4th championship last year. The people in Council have been great. I m so lucky to be surrounded by all the great people in Council like Jack Bartelt. Tom Buck, my crew guy, has been with me from the beginning. I m also lucky to be racing with such great people like Lynn Serra, Scott Durbin, (you, Larry), the Schedelbecks, Speedy Petey Wood, SpongeBob Flemming, Art Jahn... the list goes on. Scott is one of the good guys. He embodies the gentleman racing spirit of a majority of Midwestern Council drivers that are serious competitors, but see the big picture value of everybody returning to their paddock safe and with a great big smile under their helmet. And he can win, too. 3 The President Speaks Dear NSSCC Members Hello NSSCC Club members, Today is June 3, By now our racing season has started for all of our programs HPDE, HSAX, Wheel-to- Wheel, and Endurance. By now we have had 3 club weekends and are looking ahead to Milwaukee for June and our own NSSCC racing weekend at Blackhawk Farms for the July 4 th holiday weekend. On this July 4 th weekend we will have a Drivers School #2 hosted by MCSCC on the Saturday, Wheel-2-Wheel on Sunday with a bonus free Closed Wheel GT race, and a HPDE / HSAX race day on Monday July 4 itself. The Old Glory Grand Prix II weekend is a huge weekend for our club and we need volunteers. If anyone wants to help out from registration, to corner working, to even being assistants to the race chairs we can find you a quick job to do. We are in need of a Chief Starter for HSAX as well as a Flagging and Communication Chief. The race weekend is up for registration at Motorsport Reg.com and thanks to Mark Atkinson; we have the best artwork within the Midwestern Council community. Also on Friday July 1 the Alfa Romeo club of Chicago is hosting a track day, so if any of our drivers want additional track time they have asked if we could let our members know and invite them out if a Test & Tune is needed. More information is within our race packet on page 2. I look forward to seeing all of you there and let s continue our great momentum and make the Old Glory Grand Prix II the best July event MCSCC has ever seen. 4 W2W. Street-Based to Specialty Usually the first major racing category that comes to most folks mind when we talk about race cars is Wheel-to- Wheel racing: On track hysteria banging fenders through turn one to be the first to get around the track to the checkered flag. All out war. Win at all costs. Second is the first loser. OK, that s a bit of hype. Growing up we thought there was only true and false. As we matured we discovered that there can be gradients inbetween. There are degrees of budgets and commitment to win within the racing community as well. Car classing allows for choices within choices for a future or returning competitor. Based on the competitive potential of a vehicle s street version, and the improvement potential of modifications, a ladder system of increasing speed classes is created. Basically we begin with stock classes, all based on production cars from the world s auto manufacturers. Minor speed mods are allowed, but safety mods rule the specs. Moving up the ladder allows for more HSAX... A Great Place to Start, or Stay Y know, a lot of what s said above for W2W classing rationale can be applied to Autocross. Yet the classing choices follow a bit different strategy, and offer alternative, yet parallel paths. Midwestern Council s High Speed Autocross competitors can make decisions that effect in which class ladder they compete. If the goal is to compete on racing slicks, then the system where points are assigned for each modification made is the path. The GCR spells out point values for suspension, motor and construction mods which accumulate and bump your car up into the next class. If you prefer to run on DOT tires, then the Street Tire class ladder would be your choice. It offers classes based on modifications too, but you re not trying to outrun a racing slick car just other cars with treadwear rating and tread depth rules. Jumping to the next class because of one modification can be more daunting than planned. If you are super competitive in the class you left, you may now find yourself at the least competitive potential amongst cars that are fully prepared with all available mods in the class you just entered. That s where the homework comes in: What level of competition does your style & budget dictate? What car will best suit that need? How far do you want to push the car up the class ladder? Will you be better served by working on your skills than your car? Like most other endeavors, starting with the top end, shiniest, newest, most powerful vee-hickle won t guar- speed mods in prepared categories, then more wild rules for modified and finally the balls-out-for-glory race class. Some experts in a smoke-filled committee room take a look at the factory specs of a specific car and determine (with a calculator and magazine road tests?) where this particular car model fits within the stock classes. Other models of the same car may fit into a different class because manufacturer s specs aren t as aggressive. There are car manufacturers whose products never fit in the stock classes. They make small numbers of specialty cars or even dedicated race cars that never see the street. So we move to another set of classes to pit them against each other on track they don t come to an event to beat up on your Buick Century. Formula cars, GT cars and Sports Racers fit this mold. These are the cars often conjured up in the minds of folks as they picture race cars. They can be dramatic looking, exotic sounding, and super fast on track. It often takes an incredible budget and endless dedication to maintenance and preparation to successfully campaign a dedicated car. But, for many of us, that s exactly what it means to go racing. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) is the grandfather of car clubs, and is often the rule-setting organization that other clubs use to determine their classes, specifications and safety standards. Most clubs adopt specific alterations that suit their regional or membership makeup for events. All organizations have a rulebook to reference. Midwestern Council calls ours the General Competition Rules (CGR). No matter where your dreaming takes you, get to know the CGR for your choice of on-track vehicle, and bring a copy with you to the track. You ll need that GCR to reference if ever your car is questioned during post-race impound by stewards or competitors filing a protest. It s rare, but it does happen. By the way, where can you find the rules governing a protest? In the GCR. Pre-race tech inspection is designed to confirm safety compliance with the CGR for your class. Tech inspectors will assume that you have classed your car correctly and behave accordingly, unless some detail screams an error. Your best defense is a GCR quote. Bumper sticker: To err is human; to really screw up you need a computer antee success. Getting the track skill basics down via training, practice, more training, more practice will hone your skills so you will be able to manage leaps & bounds of car improvements, while getting your money s worth & results. Also, beginning in a stock class and adding one improvement at a time will teach tuning finesse. You can learn to anticipate what a suspension change will do to handling. You can anticipate the effect on oversteer of a motor tweak. Building up slowly, deliberately to a higher experience makes sense. Many novice drivers have learned the hard way that the choice of a monster-powered prolevel ride was a bit premature. Page 4

6 Rod Knock Tech Tip Follow-up: More on Fasteners Last Month we featured Tips about bolts and studs and such. One question remained unanswered by our report how to examine and pass judgement on the re-usability of critical bolts and studs. Well, John Haydon from Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies to the rescue! This is great info, folks: First would be the visual inspection. Look for the obvious, like corrosion, galling, and physical damage anywhere on the fastener (nicks/dings, bent shank, distorted threads). Cracks indicate that the fastener is already in the process of failing. The point of this exercise is to find problems before they turn into cracks. Next, check for permanent stretch. One simple way is to try to thread a good nut onto the threads. This isn't a foolproof method, but if the nut gets stuck at any point on the thread, it's a possible indication that the bolt may have been stressed to the yield point. Basically, the fine threads can get John on track. Street Cred. stretched into coarse threads. It would most likely happen somewhere along the exposed male threads, between the unthreaded portion of the shank (if present) and the female threads in the mating part. The male threads have a difficult time stretching when they're threaded into the female threads! The better way is to check every bit of the threads using a thread pitch gauge. Still not the perfect method, but if you're working with "critical" fasteners, a thread pitch gauge is a must-have anyway. The downside is that it is possible for the stretch to After all.. occur somewhere along the unthreaded portion, and inspecting the threads won't catch that. The best method is to measure the overall length of each bolt or stud. ARP recommends using a stretch gauge every time you remove the connecting rod bolts and recording the results. Any bolt that measures 0.001" (one one-thousandth of an inch) longer than last time should be considered used up. The only downside to this method, aside from the cost of the gauge, is that you have no what could go wrong? baseline to start from if you didn't build the engine. But on the other hand, if you don't really know the history of those critical fasteners, the smart thing to do is to replace them all (with high-quality fasteners) when you do your first rebuild. If only I had known that before setting off for Mid-Ohio in Apparently, socket-head cap screws ("Allen" bolts) are not really a good choice for connecting rod bolts. I don't have that particular engine builder on speed-dial anymore. Anyone looking for more information on the design and use of critical bolts could do a lot worse than the ARP catalog. Nearly 20 of the 108 pages are just tech articles about bolts, and it's free to download from the ARP site ( A lot of the FAA manuals are also available as free downloads. FAA-H (2 volumes) covers all aspects of aircraft inspection and maintenance, from fasteners to hand tools. The Fastenal website also has some valuable (and yet, free!) information about SAE bolts. John was also kind enough to offer expanded information. I ll surely take him up on this soon in an upcoming edition: If you're thinking about an article on female threaded fasteners in the future, I have some info I can send along. Nice to know our sponsors are looking out for us. Yeah.look really carefully at this one. A suggestion from a car magazine. Proceed with caution, and no guarantees, warrantees or even supportive wishes. Some commenters on the suggestion claimed they successfully, safely moved long pipes, moldings, conduits, 2x4 s and all kinds of can t-fit-in-the-car stuff....another Rod Knock Tech Tip: Wanna Risk It? Here s the Tip: And all sensible cautions are encouraged.but.does it seem do-able? Loops that are solidly fixed to front (rear?) fender bolts to thread through and cradle long construction materials and such. Not much was mentioned by the magazine s source as to stabilizing loads, avoiding scratches and items sliding forward or back out into following traffic. Gulp. I guess this is comparable to tieing a mattress and box spring on top of your Yugo with common furniture store hemp rope. Can you say square knot boys & girls? 7 Rod Knock s Look at Staffing Help Wanted A look at our MCSCC 2016 schedule rings an alert bell.for two Blackhawk Farms occasions: Our own NSSCC 3-day weekend July 2,3,4 and MCSSC s staffing of the VSCDA weekend 3-dayer, June 17,18,19. VSCDA will rely on MC to manage on-track affairs at BFR for their TransAm B Sedans, Formula Vee, Spridgit Series, a Veterans Benefit Enduro and more. It s a rather unique gathering of iconic vehicles that should be amazing to see in full glory. Contact: VSCDA Race Staff Director, Kari DeServi. Of course, our own NSSCC event will be fireworks worthy even if it wasn t on the Fourth of July weekend. It will be the last chance for MCSSC competition license hopefuls to get this much attention and assistance, and then be able to follow up with next-day W2W big time fun. Monday will be a superb opportunity for track time a.m. and timed runs p.m., combining HPDE & HSAX events. He writes about it in his Sport&Specialty blog, but we thought you d be interested in the satisfying outcome as you plan your racing season. Here s highlights: Maximum Density: I got my racing physical last week. In short, all is A- O.K, except that I gained a bunch of weight since my last physical. Enough weight to put me at maximum density, a stunning new high. The last time I was this big, my driver s suit fit like a kielbasa casing with a string tied in the middle. With my belts tight, I couldn t exhale. It was a special and sobering time I remember only too well. Also, Uncle Johnny was asked to walk his beautiful niece Alana down the aisle at her wedding in early May, and he needs to find a little personal pride, knowing this issue can t be solved with a little bigger t-shirt and a new zip up hoodie. So here I go, back on the gethealthy-in-a-hurry-program. If you have been thinking about losing a few pounds and feeling a bit more alive at the end of a sprint race, follow along. Last time I faced this issue was four years ago when I lost about the same amount of weight (25 or so pounds) after I finally won the quit smoking battle. To help manage the eat less and do more program, I recommend two apps: Map My Run and My Fitness Pal. I have used them in the past and they now even update each other. Map My Run records your cardio activity, even dog walks, while My Fitness Pal records your food intake. The two programs then merge their data to help monitor your net daily and weekly caloric intake, providing a chart of your progress against your preset goal. It s pretty slick. Stay consistent, don t cheat, be patient, and plan your meals a bit if you can. I swear you will see results. The big surprise once I got a bit thinner & more heart healthy was that my lap times came down. The decrease in lap times came with me not wearing out 20 minutes into a race. It does make a difference, and not just having 25 less pounds in the car. I was able to push harder, longer, and as a bonus, my driver s suit fit great. My seat fits better also. All good things, and the program still works, I lost two pounds last week, I m not at maximum density any longer!
