1 The ORIGINAL, CLASSIC, Wood Dale Criterium RESULTS REDLINE RACING Sunday, July 5 th 2009 Wood Dale, 2009 ABR Illinois Criterium Championship 1 st place Illinois ABR Annual member wins an Criterium Championship Jersey and Medal 2 nd through 5 th place Illinois ABR Annual member receives place Medal. All riders were eligible for the many prizes and Primes. Tour of & WI and Rider of the Year points awarded, except for Cat 5-Beginner This event was Prime-tastical, some riders actually got tired sprinting for stuff!! Thanks to Village Cycle Sport, Corkill Insurance, GU Energy Gel, RavX, The City of Wood Dale and Redline Racing. The first race of the day started at 8:am with 34 riders with only a year or two of racing experience in a 20 minutes plus 2 laps race. The rider field pace varied some but not enough to shake off many riders. With one lap to go the riders set up for a pack sprint. 7 riders were able to ride away from the field with Scott Knoepke taking the win. A fast pace during the first lap of the 30min plus 2-lap race split the pack with 9 riders in the lead group. Bob Burns and Charles Snyder took primes, the lead group went down to 6 riders for the finish sprint, with Burns, Snyder and Rich Vichotka the top three and each winning their age group. Pat Murphy and Ray Putnam won their age groups. That was only the start of many attempted breakaways. Lap 8 had Jon Lafontant and Gary Doering off the front and chasers trying to catch. Lap 14 Wayne Simon, Fabio Orlandi, Andy Kerr and John Fleckenstein joined the break. this break had the leg power and speed to lap the field. Tom Doughty sprung from the chasing field trying to catch but he was no match for the break. Two laps to go Stuart Grinell goes off the front of chase field. Wayne Simon wins the very fast breakaway sprint finish and the 50 Champion, in the field sprint Richard Kreutzfeldt wins the 55+ Champion title. What a great race to watch. Konrad Witt pushed the pace for three laps getting some primes and this split up the field. A quick look over the line up and you could just tell a Team effort was in the works to place teammates in first and the top 10. The start was not special but with each lap there was a new rider or riders trying to break from the field. About half way through the race a break was established. But this break began having riders trying to breakaway. The break had Doughty, Zauner, Otero, Kron, Metz, Boyer, Kerr, Lowe and McLerran. 8 laps from the finish after a prime Tom Doughty breaks from the breakaway and holds off the riders. With two laps to go riders from the field were catching the tail end of the Breakaway. With one to go Doughty off the front and a stream of riders behind. Hackl, Haas, Simon and Arrigoni infiltrated the break at the finish line, causing surprise by the break. Jessi Prinner began pushing the speed early, eventually Jessi, Kim Gialdini and Jannette Rho broke from the field. Jessi kept the pressure up winning primes and was starting to string out the break a few laps from the finish. Jessi wins the race and 1st Women Open, Kim is 2nd and 1st Cat 4.Lynn wins the field sprint and 1st 40+. Marilyn gets 6th overall and 1st 50+. Pat is 1st 70+ and Nancy wins 60+. 6 12:30pm and time for lunch, no way, 35 Master 30+ riders are on the line ready to race 45min plus 2-laps. Hermon Johnson breaks on the first lap with Howard Smith, Chris Mosora and the field chasing for 6 laps. Prime lap comes and Stathy Touloumis and field swallow the break. But Stathy stays off the front with Andy Rizzo and Jeff Schroetlin chasing hard. Brian Haas and Kevin Stephens join the break in two laps, now there are 5. Kevin is dropped 5 laps later. The pace is relentless in the break because riders in the field keep trying to bridge the gap. 6 laps to go and Haas is out of the Break. 5 laps to finish Rizzo is dropped from break. Walid, Mosora, Tomlinson and Johnson are at the front of the field. Two laps to go Jeff and Stathy in the lead, Andrew in 3rd alone and the field is together. Jeff takes the worthy 1st place. A well deserved 2nd to Stathy and 3rd to Andrew. Chris Mosora wins field sprint for 4th. 7 45min and 2-lap race for the 41 Category 4 riders. The field of riders stayed together for a few laps until Sean Pedersen made a move off the front that lasted 3 laps. Richard Lenski and Matt Samples broke away but were caught in a couple laps. Other riders pushed the pace trying to gather a break or get the pace high enough to break up the field. Quentin Capista and Sean were prominent riders at the front. Shawn Stubbe, Richard Lenski and Robert Roop were at the front with 3 to go. Wisconsin racer Trevor Russell won the race, 2nd place Paul Miner wins the Crit Champion a hard fought last lap. 8 For 4 laps into this Category 3 race it was a field of riders riding well. The race is 45min plus 2 laps so why work hard too early. Prime bell rings and the field is charging fast, Waylon Janowiak wins the prime and keeps on going on a solo break. 7 laps later during a prime sprint Chad Chenoweth joins Waylon for 4 laps, other riders make attempts to bridge to the break without success because the field is also chasing. Then James Sneddon, Derric Ungaro and Ben Widoff bridge to the break. Chad is out of the break, 2 laps later Derric is out of the break. The time is getting short in this race, riders in the field are restless, chasing hard to reel in or bridge the gap. Ricardo Otero, Ron Cook and Nat Bricker bridged the gap but Nat cannot hold on. The break is set for the final 3 laps. Ricardo wins the sprint for 1st place Crit Champ and Teammate Waylon who originated the breakaway takes 2nd. 9 One Hour and 2 laps of fast pace racing awaited 48 of the top riders from in and other States. With Primes coming every few laps and an overall prize list to chase down this will be a good race. As the race laps counted down it was a mix of who s who off the front. But a pattern emerged, Ryan Freund-the new locomotive-was pressing for a breakaway. 26min (12laps) into the race he was on a solo with his ABD teammates trying to keep the field from catching for the 22min (15 laps) he was out there. Not long after Ryan was caught, Jeff Schroetlin ABD makes a break, then drizzle of rain came in which was a refresher for the riders. Jeff held off the field for 5 laps taking 1st place for the second race today (30+). The field was charging fast, stretching to single file before the after burners opened up on the sprinters. The drizzle disturbed the Video of the finish, reading numbers was difficult but with help of the riders identifying the top 24 are listed.
