The Paralympic Games are one of the most spectacular sporting events in the world and this year their splendour will be brightened up by the spectacular venue. Within the following two months the British capital will breathe in rhythm with Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Four thousand two hundred (4200) paralympic athletes and their two thousand seven hundred sixty-seven (2767) team officials, including the Slovenian team, will have the scenery for displaying their extraordinary abilities created by Big Ben, London Eye, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the Thames river. The Olympic principle It s not the winning but the taking part that counts! is even more important to paralympic athletes than to their Olympic counterparts. The Paralympic games namely epitomize all their passion and desire that they invested in years of training, in order to achieve the qualification to compete on this great and important event. Thus, London is the reward for all their efforts and each out of twentytwo (22) Slovenian paralympic athletes already achieved a personal victory by becoming a member of the paralympic team. But most of them will not stop here and are determined to reach for higher goals. The Slovenian team is already proud to include athletes, who already won Paralympic medals and medals from world and European championships. But for some of them the struggle for precious medals begins in London for the first time. Anyhow, the hearts of paralympic colleagues and team officials will pulsate for all of them. They will also be supported by their families, fans and the Slovenian public, and the mass of people gathered at the opening ceremony will roar loudly only for them. This summer the world will come to a halt and keep a vigilant eye on paralympic athletes. The Slovenian national team will make London its home for a few weeks. For a moment they will put their daily tasks aside, transform their four-year-long efforts to strength and focus only on what matters the most: display of their highest abilities on this grand stage. They will yield enthusiasm and inspiration. And they will win, no matter the ranking, for themselves and for their country. Coaches, medical team and all other officials of the Slovenian national team will play an important role in London. They will look after our athletes, encourage them and fix those tiny little details, which separate great athletes from exceptional ones. I am certain that their joint efforts will create an extraordinary whole. There will be thirty-nine (39) Slovenians in London, thirty- nine (39) wishes to aim for the highest results of twenty-two (22) athletes and their life-long aspirations, concentrated on six (6) paralympic sports. Thirtynine (39) of us will breathe there (with you included) as one. Let the paralympic enthusiasm begin! Roman JAKIČ, Chef de Mission 4

5 Paraolimpijske igre so eden izmed najsijajnejših športnih dogodkov na svetu in letos bo k njihovemu blišču prispevalo še sijajno prizorišče. Britanska prestolnica bo v naslednjih dveh mesecih dihala, utripala in vršala z olimpijci in paraolimpijci.

Proud to Attend the London 2012 Paralympic Games It was in the country that is hosting the 14th Paralympic Games that sports for the disabled, initially as a form of rehabilitation, under the guidance of Dr. Ludvik Guttman, soon started growing to various forms of recreational sports, before finally becoming competitive. The beginnings of the sports for the disabled undoubtedly originate from the rehabilitation centre in Stoke Mandeville. And the peak of sports events is epitomized by the Paralympic Games, which take place every four years. Slovenian disabled athletes have a rich tradition, and this year we are celebrating 40 years since our first performance at the Paralympic Games in 1972 in Heidelberg, Germany, where we won one gold and one bronze medal, and many excellent achievements, including qualifications for the finals. This was a great starting position for other athletes performing on Paralympic Games, who kept coming back with medals and records in individual disciplines. We shouldn t neglect the fact that the motive is not to be the best, to win, but to rejoice and share joy with others. From 29 August to 9 September our athletes will compete in athletics, table tennis, shooting, swimming, cycling and sitting volleyball. We tried to provide optimum preparation conditions for the selected national teams and their disciplines, under the guidance of well-respected coaches, who already successfully performed their task so many times before. We want to show our gratitude! We are often unaware of their personal contribution, for being available and for harmonizing and executing the programmes planned, together with our expert team. We are certain that the team we are sending to the greatest competition of the world will show its best. Many athletes in the team already boast rich competition experiences, quite a few of them are Paralympic medal winner. We are aware that there are many out there, who would deserve to be a part of the team, considering their current achievements, but unfortunately the criteria and conditions set by the organizer are literally cruel. Even at the additional request sent to the organizer we were unable to obtain additional quotas in an individual sport. As regards team sports, conditions for qualifying for the Paralympic tournament are also well known. I don t know if we are fully aware that participation and performance at the Paralympic Games should become an all-slovenian project and not only a project of one or a few organizations and individuals. 6

7 Cooperation with the Olympic Committee of Slovenia is reflected in an increasingly greater mutual satisfaction. We ve had the opportunity to present ourselves on joint press conferences, and as a result the sport for the disabled is becoming increasingly recognizable in Slovenia. We were happy to hear that major media houses (TV, radio, STA) will daily cover the Paralympic Games, with a special emphasis on performances of Slovenian athletes. After all, this is what athletes and viewers or listeners throughout Slovenia deserve. This will increase support to the sport for the disabled even further. And the credit for unselfish support and cooperation in implementation of preparations, equipment, logistics, supply of sports requisites, and provision of professional staff goes to the University Rehabilitation Institute Soča, the Foundation for the Financing of Organizations for the Disabled and Humanitarian Organizations and the Olympic Committee of Slovenia. Let s send our athletes and team officials on their journey to London with a sincere wish for them to meet their expectations, hoping that their hard work will be repaid with excellent results and positive attitude. Athletes of Slovenia, we are on your side!!! Jože OKOREN, Chairman of the Sports Commission S ponosom na Paraolimpijske igre»london 2012«Prav v državi, kjer bodo letos potekale 14. paraolimpijske igre, je rehabilitacija invalidov pod vodstvom dr. Ludvika Guttmana začela preraščati v oblike športne rekreacije in nato dobivati tekmovalni značaj. vir: London 2012 Začetki športa invalidov nedvomno izhajajo iz rehabilitacijskega centra v Stoke Mandevillu.

Hvala jim! Športnice in športniki, mi smo z vami!!! Jože OKOREN, Predsednik Komisije za tekmovalni šport 8

Sports federation for the disabled of Slovenia Paralympic committee of Slovenia (NPC Slovenia) The beginnings of the NPC Slovenia are closely linked to the sports activities of war veterans with disabilities. The Federation of War Veterans with Disabilities (ZVVI) set up a sports committee, which started to manage in an organised way sports for all people with disability and later also competitive forms of sports. At first only for members of the ZVVI, later on the activities were gradually spread to other persons with disabilities and to their newly emerging organisations. As far back as 1952, the first republic-wide skiing championship was held, followed in 1954 by republic-wide competitions in 9-pins bowling, table tennis, chess and shooting, with the participation of around 200 persons with disabilities. Alongside bocce, these sports make up the core of the most popular sports developed among persons with disabilities in Slovenia. Slovenian athletes also competed successfully in nationwide competitions within, at the time, Sports Federation for the Disabled of Yugoslavia. From beginnings as the disabled war veterans committee, the NPC Slovenia went through many stages of development. While the beginning was dominated by sports of an exclusively recreational nature, during the course of its development, competitive and later also elite level sports for persons with disabilities started to predominate. The present organisation of the NPC Slovenia has its roots in the 1990 s, when 10 national organisations for the disabled decided to set up the new NPC. Out of a federation of disabled sports societies, the NPC Slovenia became a federation of national disabled associations. It was entrusted with the implementation of sports activities on the national level and with all matters 10

11 relating to scouting, preparing and placing in competition the best Slovenian athletes with disabilities at official international competitions such as european and world championships, the world games and the paralympic games. The current membership of the NPC Slovenia comprises the following national organisations for the disabled: FEDERATION OF THE BLIND AND PARTIALLY SIGHTED ASSOCIATIONS OF SLOVENIA THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING CLUB ASSOCIATIONS OF SLOVENIA UNION OF THE PARAPLEGICS OF SLOVENIA FEDERATION OF THE DISABLED WORKERS ASSOCIATIONS OF SLOVENIA SONČEK - CEREBRAL PALSY ASSOCIATION OF SLOVENIA SOŽITJE - NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR HELP TO PEARSONS WITH INTELECTUAL DISABILITY OF SLOVENIA MUSCULAR DYSTHROPHY ASSOCIATION OF SLOVENIA MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS ASSOCIATION OF SLOVENIA FEDERATION OF SOCIETIES OF CIVILIAN PERSONS DISABLED FROM WAR OF SLOVENIA SLOVENIAN ASSOCIATION OF DISABLED STUDENTS FEDERATION OF DISABLED WAR VETERANS ASSOCIATIONS OF SLOVENIA SLOVENIAN OSTOMY ASSOCIATION ILCO LARYNGECTOMEES ASSOCIATION OF SLOVENIA ANKYLOSING SPONDILITIS ASSOCIATION OF SLOVENIA SLOVENIAN PARALYTICS ASSOCIATION In this way the NPC Slovenia now manages or enables the holding of about 30 national championships and up to 20 programmes for Slovenian athletes with disabilities to compete in international championships. The NPC Slovenia is a member of 17 international federations for sports for the disabled on the European and world level. These include the main umbrella organisation for the majority of sports for the disabled the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The NPC Slovenia is a member of the Slovenian Olympic Committee - Association of Sports Federations.

The Team 2012/Ekipa 2012 ATHLETICS/ATLETIKA: ATHLETICS, THE QUEEN OF SPORTS Athletics is not famed as the queen of sports for no reason, as it is one of the most appropriate sports, which enables a wide range of individual disciplines and encourages people to display an array of various capabilities. Athletics can be a good choice for quadriplegics and paraplegics, people suffering from cerebral palsy, blind and partially sighted, and athletes with amputated limbs. Athletic disciplines are divided to technical (discus, javelin, shot put and club throw) and race events or wheelchair races (short and long tracks, relay races, short and long marathon) as well as competitions in long jump and high jump. Slovenia will be represented by four athletes in technical disciplines. THROWING FRAMES Athletes competing in throw disciplines use throwing frames. They are individually adapted to every athlete. There are certain criteria to be fulfilled, such as the maximum height of the frame is 75 cm, and since 1 July 2011 the support bar, which is a part of the throwing frame, must be fixed with no flexibility. The same applies to the back rest, but the height depends on the height of the spinal cord injury of a competitor. The new rule resulted in shorter distances, because the flexibility of the bar once gave an athlete a good push, whereas now it is only an aid for throwing. CLASSIFICATION As a result of the increasing number of athletes with various types of disability, athletes are classified into individual competition groups. The classification of an athlete is defined by a letter, which shows whether an athlete is competing in a track event T (track races) or a field event F (field throws), and a number, with an indication of a physical impairment of an athlete (quads and paraplegics from 51 58). The lower the spinal cord injury, the higher the classification group of an athlete and the smaller is the impact of the athlete s physical impairment on his/her functional ability to compete. A quadriplegic with a cervical vertebrae injury, which is common in discus throw, is classified into the group F51, a paraplegic with a thoracic vertebrae injury, who competes in discus throw, is classified into the group F55. Athletes are classified into groups by duly qualified classifiers. Athletes compete within their groups, but on major events (Paralympic games, WC, EC) the groups are merged, in order to maintain the competitive spirit, if it turns out there are not enough competitors in an individual group. Usually, groups are joined in the following way: 18

19 Group F51 + athletes with severe case of cerebral palsy; Group F52 + F53; Group F54 + F55 + F56; Group F57 + F58. In such a case the score is obtained by using points score system. Each competition group has point score table used to calculate the distance, which is given an appropriate number of points. An athlete in the group F52 has a shorter distance than an athlete in a group F53, but he/she is better because of points or has a higher ranking than a competitor in group F53. The final placement thus depends on the number of points achieved.»atletika KRALJICA ŠPORTA«Atletika ni brez razloga poimenovana kraljica športa, saj je ena primernejših športnih panog, ki omogoča širok izbor posameznih disciplin in od posameznika zahteva različne sposobnosti.

24 CYCLING/KOLESARSTVO: CYCLING Cycling for disabled athletes comprises four different physical impairments: blind and partially sighted cyclists, athletes with cerebral palsy or neurological disorders, athletes with amputated limbs and athletes with spinal cord injury. In total there are 14 functional categories for men and women in all age categories, in accordance with the provisions of UCI (Union Cycliste Internacionale). Cyclists are grouped into relevant classes with regard to their competitive ability. CLASSIFICATION Due to various physical impairments cyclists are grouped into relevant competition classes, with regard to the extent of competitive abilities, which result from their impairment. Para-cycling sports classes HANDBIKE Athletes with spinal cord injury or with amputated lower limbs TRYCYCLE Athletes with neurological disorders or head injuries CYCLING Athletes with neurological disorders and amputated limbs TANDEM Blind and partially sighted athletes, including sighted companions Handbike H 1 Tricycle T 1 Cycling C 1 Tandem B Handbike H 2 Tricycle T 2 Cycling C 2 Handbike H 3 Cycling C 3 Handbike H 4 Cycling C 4 Cycling C 5 DISCIPLINE A bicycle of an athlete competing at Paralympic Games is modified with regard to his/her physical impairment or competitive competency. An athlete with spinal cord injury or an athlete with one or both amputated lower limbs uses a handbike; a paralympic competitor with neurological disorder or brain damage and consequently with decreased stability competes on a tricycle; an athlete with mild neurological disorder or amputated limbs competes on a normal bicycle, i.e. with or without any modifications. There are two athletes in a tandem, and namely a blind or partially sighted cyclist in the back, and a sighted companion, most frequently a non-disabled person, in the front. Cycling is divided to road and track cycling. In road cycling there are road races, chronometer and time trials; cyclists with handbikes can compete also in relay races. Velodrome races are limited solely to cyclists with normal bicycles and to tandems, who can also compete in sprint and endurance disciplines.

25 UCI (Union Cycliste Internacionale). V tandemu sta dva športnika, in sicer slepi oziroma slabovidni kolesar zadaj in videči, največkrat neinvalid, kolesar spredaj. Only after standing players took part in the 1976 Paralympic Games for amputated and other physically impaired (»Les Autres«), in the 1980 Paralympic Games for athletes with cerebral palsy and in the 1982 world championship for athletes with all types of disability, did various table tennis subcommittees start co-developing an idea about joint classification, which then led to the founding of a single table-tennis committee. (Source: ITTF PTT) In table tennis for athletes with physical impairment athletes are divided into two groups, i.e. players, who play on wheelchairs, and players in a standing position. Within these two groups there are also five sub-groups. WHEELCHAIR ATHLETES: Class 1 (quadriplegia, spinal cord injury) (C5/6) Class 2 (quadriplegia, spinal cord injury) (C6/7) In both groups there are players with severely limited functions of the hand used for playing and impaired grip and hand function. The biggest difference between them is particularly in the (non)-function of extensor muscles of the elbow. Class 3 (paraplegia, spinal cord injury) (C8/Th7) Inability to maintain balance in an upright sitting position in a wheelchair without using the back of a chair. Inability to use abdominal and back muscles in controlling the upper part of torso and fixation of the lumbar part of the spine. Most players are classified into this group, which, consequently, means the greatest competition. 26

27 Class 4 (paraplegia, spinal cord injury) (Th8/L1) Lack of sense for balance in an upright sitting position. They are not capable of intentional motions in the frontal and sagittal planes (forwards and sideways) due to the lack of functional use of hip and thigh muscles. Class 5 (paraplegia, spinal cord injury) (L2/S2) Minimum capacity of performing torso motion sideways (sagittal plane), if the pelvis is retained in the selected position with adductors. Torso muscles are functional. STANDING ATHLETES: Class 6 and Class 7 In group 6 there is a combination of damaged hand used for playing with severe impairment of lower limbs, whereas in the group 7 there is one of the two impairments or a mild form of both. Class 8, Class 9 and Class 10 These three classes include a severe, moderate or mild form of impairment of lower limbs or of a hand used for playing or of a hand not used for playing. Class Players with intellectual disability and decreased concentration. There is also a modified rule regarding serves in classes 1-5, which is different from standing athletes. The ball must cross the end line of the table and must not go over the side line of the table. Standing athletes play without any modifications or restricted table tennis rules. Skupina 11 Igralci z motnjami učenja in zmanjšano koncentracijo. 33 33 SITTING VOLLEYBALL/ODBOJKA SEDE: Volleyball is one of the most popular sports in the world. Majority of people play indoor volleyball or beach volley. Volleyball is also a popular sport for the disabled. Physical impairment is often reflected in limited mobility. A game called sitting volleyball resulted out of the need and desire to allow physically impaired athletes to play volleyball. It is an attractive game using a ball, which is hit over the net in a sitting position. Sitting volleyball is most appropriate for persons with limited mobility or injury of lower limbs: amputation of one or both legs, reduced muscular strength, reduced mobility or a shorter limb. In international competitions, organized by the World Organization Volleyball for Disabled, authorized classifiers assess the level of impaired mobility. Players are not grouped, the only thing that is being assessed is whether the impairment is in accordance with the rules or such that prevents equal inclusion of non-disabled athletes. Official competitions also allow cooperation of two players with a minimum degree of disability endoprosthesis of a hip joint, knee or ankle, ligament instability of knees by 1.5cm, ankle instability, innate dislocation of hips, circulation problems in lower limbs but only one on the field of play. The rules of indoor volleyball and sitting volleyball are almost the same. The basic difference is that in sitting volleyball players must be in a sitting position whenever they touch a ball and must never lose contact with the ground. Hands have a double function; next to hitting the ball players use them for moving around the court. There are only two differences in rules: determining the position of the player and block. The position of the foot is not important for determining a player s position, since sitting volleyball players have feet inside the court when serving a ball, but the position of the buttocks, which must be behind the basic line.

Pravila dvoranske odbojke in odbojke sede so skoraj enaka. 41 41 SWIMMING/PLAVANJE: Another discipline in the sports for the disabled is swimming, which is very popular and well-developed everywhere in the world. Ever since the first Paralympic games in Rome in 1960 swimming has been one of the major sports. Similarly to its Olympic counterpart, paralympic swimmers swim in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and medley disciplines. Swimming is a sport for men and women with various impairments. Swimmers are grouped into classes with regard to their functional ability to perform in every discipline. Swimming is governed by the International Paralympic Committee (international abbreviation IPC), and organized by IPC for swimming and technical committee, which includes all rules of the international governing body of swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open water swimming (FINA). FINA rules are used with a few modifications, such as selective programme in starts for various techniques and various signals, which are modified particularly for persons with hearing impairment and impaired vision. The International Paralympic Committee for swimming classifies every athlete, who wishes to actively compete in competitions for the disabled, with regard to his/her ability and impairment. Considering the type of disability, they are classified into ten functional groups (1-10) and three groups of blind and partially sighted (11-13). Groups range from swimmers with low abilities (S1, SB1, SM1, S11) to those with higher abilities (S10, SB9, SM10, S13). Group prefixes: S before a class represents freestyle, backstroke and butterfly disciplines, SB stands for breaststroke and SM for individual medley. Swimmers with intellectual disabilities (S14) and deaf and hard of hearing swimmers (S15) do not compete at Paralmypic games, but they take part in competitions on an international level and various Olympics, such as games for the deaf and hard of hearing and Special Olympics. In Paralympic Games in London 2012 Slovenia will be represented by Darko Đurić, who is grouped into class S4. This class includes athletes, who actively use their upper limbs and meet the criteria of minimal impairment of muscle power, but lack active mobility after amputation of all four limbs; swimmers with coordination problems. Usually swimmers start in water, but also from a sitting position on a starting podium. They have a weak push when starting and turning. Distances and disciplines of swimmers with functional impairments (S1-S10, SB1-SB9, SM1-SM10): 50m and 100m freestyle: from group S1 to S10 200m freestyle: from group S1 to S5 400m freestyle: from group S6 to S10 50m backstroke: from group S1 to S5 100m backstroke: from group S6 to S10 50m butterfly: from group S1 to S7

A competitor on an international level must meet in particular the criteria relating to minimal disability, which in layman terms means such loss of muscle power or a lack of functions in order for a competitor to gain a sufficient number of points (non-functionality of specific sets of muscles, coordination problems). In the majority of cases this means paraplegia, quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, paralysis or other forms of diseases or impairments; in case of amputation for shooters with a pistol this means at least amputation of a wrist, for rifle amputa-

tion under an elbow or through an ankle. There are two main classes: SH1 and SH2 ( sh for shooting, number refers to the number of category). With regard to disability, competitors are grouped into subclasses A, B in C, which affects the height of the back of a wheelchair or chair (no back, 10 cm back or high back), which is determined on the basis of balance and functionality of the spine or back. In shooting the rules of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) apply, which means the same firearms and equipment are used, however, with certain modification. The SH 1 class includes competitors, who can hold a weapon on their own, so shooters with a rifle and a pistol, who have functional hands that allow them to handle firearms independently. Shooters with a rifle shoot with an air rifle and MK firearm and namely air rifle standing (R1) and prone (R3) 60 shoots, with MK firearm 60 shoots prone (R6) and a triple position 3x40 shoots (R7). In this class competitors mainly shoot in a sitting position, because they are mostly wheelchair users (paraplegics) or people with a loss of limbs. There is often a misconception relating to positions in shooting with a rifle, because the majority of athletes in all positions shoot from a wheelchair, that s why many people have problems with comprehending standing and prone. Positions are defined with regard to the position of hands or a hand rest that a competitor can have. In standing position a competitor is allowed to use hands to rest on his/her own body, and the sitting angle must not be smaller than 30 degrees, back rest must be appropriate to the competitor s subclass. In prone position competitors use a special shooting stand, where they place both elbows and also use a shooting belt. Pistol shooters use an air pistol (P1), MK freestyle pistol (P4) and MK sports pistol (P3). The shooting position depends on whether a competitor is shooting in a sitting or a standing position. In a sitting position a competitor shoots from a wheelchair or a chair with a back rest corresponding to the competitor s subclass. The SH2 class includes competitors with a rifle, which are unable to hold a rifle on their own due to the non-functionality of hands (amputation or reduced muscular power) and are not capable of handling a rifle independently in the majority of cases. This usually refers to competitors with amputated limbs or quadriplegics. Such competitors shoot with a special stand, which has precisely defined measures and a spring, which largely makes up for a hand or movement of hands of non-disabled competitors. Competitions include air rifle standing (R4) and air rifle prone (R5). A competitor in a standing position may rest on his/ her own body, the sitting angle must not be smaller than 30 degrees, back rest must be suitable to the competitor s subclass. In the prone position competitors have a special table, where they place their elbows on.

Strelci s puško streljajo z zračnim in MK orožjem, in sicer z zračnim orožjem v disciplini stoje (R1) in leže (R3) 60 strelov, z MK orožjem pa 60 strelov leže (R6) in trojni položaj 3 x 40 strelov (R7). 46

51 I FEEL SLOVENIA Profusion for all the senses 20,000 KM2 OF DIVERSITY: FROM THE ALPS TO THE SEA, FROM THE PANNONIAN PLAIN TO THE KARST Slovenia, the fourth smallest member of the European Union in terms of area, boasts an extraordinary diversity of landscapes in a relatively small territory. Easy access to this diversity is a particular advantage: it is possible to start the day in the mountains, with their sports and recreation centres, continue it on a farm in a green mountain pasture or valley, or perhaps on the Adriatic coast, and before it gets to evening allow yourself to be pampered at a top-flight thermal spa centre offering a sophisticated range of health and wellness services. You can taste Slovenia in 24 distinct gastronomic regions and 14 wine districts. Relaxation, entertainment and culture are provided by internationally famous festivals and other events 365 days a year. Slovenia is an attractive blend of urban sophistication and rustic warmth in a green environment of incredible diversity. Views: different in every direction The north of Slovenia offers mountainous and hilly landscapes. In the north-west of the country are the JULIAN ALPS with their highest peak, the 2,864-metre TRIGLAV, surrounded by 880 square kilometres of protected area in one of the oldest national parks in Europe. Here, too, is the unmissable resort town of Bled with its legendary island in the middle of the lake and its clifftop castle, its hot springs and its pleasant climate. Bled has been attracting cosmopolitan visitors for centuries. North of Bled are the KARAVANKE mountains, with their flora (including wild daffodil meadows) and their ironworking tradition. Central Slovenia has the forest-covered KAMNIK-SAVINJA Alps, with their still-active mountain pastures, for example VELIKA PLANINA with one of the best-preserved groups of herdsmen s huts in Europe. In the north-east of the country, hilly POHORJE with its wetlands flirts with the Alpine world, whose unique features Slovenia protects in accordance with the international Alpine Convention. Avtor: A. FEVŽAR Over 10,000 kilometres of marked walking and climbing trails lead

Avtor: B. JAKŠE, S. JERŠIČ to high-altitude views. Along them you will find 170 mountain huts and around 40 hotels catering for hikers and hillwalkers. The south of Slovenia includes, at the westernmost tip of the country, the ADRIATIC coast with its ancient saltworks, picturesque, typically Mediterranean PIRAN and cosmopolitan PORTOROŽ. A wealth of natural and cultural features of interest means that a fifth of Slovenia s coast enjoys protected status! The south of Slovenia is full of curious karst phenomena and vineyard-covered hills. The Karst region is one of Slovenia s most famous features karst features around the world in fact derive their name from the eponymous region of Slovenia. Of particular interest to visitors are POSTOJNA CAVE, the most visited karst cave in Europe, and the ŠKOCJAN CAVES, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Other attractions of the Karst region include LIPICA, the birthplace of the famous white Lipizzaner horses, medieval ŠTANJEL with its castle and the park designed by renowned architect Max Fabiani, and many other cultural, traditional and gastronomic features of interest. South-east Slovenia in particular is characterised by thermal springs and vineyard-covered hills, continuing on into the east of the country to the Pannonian Plain. The hills and fertile plains of the east of Slovenia extend along the rivers Drava and Mura. Besides thermal water, mineral water and excellent wines, this part of Slovenia has its own distinct local cultural and gastronomic traditions. Yet there is no need to choose between the different regions of Slovenia you can travel from one end of the country to the other in just a few hours, since the whole of Slovenia fits into an area of just over 20,000 square kilometres, and the length of the longest diagonal is only around 350 kilometres. Avtor: TOMO JESENIČNIK Exploring: towns and culture, country and cuisine Slovenia has a population of 2 million with roughly a third of the population living in cities or towns with over 10,000 inhabitants. Even Slovenia s biggest cities appear small in global terms, but this does not prevent them from astonishing visitors with their architecture, their rich history and, last but not least, their connection with the green hinterland. Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, lies on a river below a hilltop castle, like the majority of the country s historic towns. It is famous for the architectural 52

53 Avtor: A. FEVŽAR creations of Jože Plečnik, who was also responsible for notable buildings in Prague and Vienna. Also worth visiting are towns and cities of particular cultural interest such as MARIBOR with the oldest vine in the world, PTUJ with its unique carnival traditions, NOVO MESTO in a bend of the river Krka, ŠKOFJA LOKA, with the traditions of the oldest dramatic work in Slovene, IDRIJA with the technical heritage of its famous mercury mine, and many more. Particularly in summer, Slovenia s towns give themselves over to festivals, attracting visitors from near and far. In 2010 Ljubljana was the World Book Capital. In 2012 Maribor, along with its partner towns, is the EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE. The markets of towns around Slovenia offer local produce of the kind that can be enjoyed throughout the country. Traditional hospitality is offered by over 300 farm tourism establishments, which are an excellent starting point for getting to know the different regions of Slovenia, not to mention its 24 gastronomic regions. Typical local dishes are accompanied by fine wines from Slovenia s three wine regions, divided into 14 separate wine districts and crisscrossed by 20 wine routes. The winemaking tradition in Slovenia dates back to Roman times, and interesting wine cellars well worth a visit are a testament to medieval traditions. OBČINA SLOVENSKE KONJICE Activities: recreation in the countryside, spa breaks Slovenia is a country of green breaks and recreation in the countryside all year round. In winter there are dozens of winter sports centres catering for Alpine and Nordic skiers, ski tourers, snowboarders, tobogganers, snowshoeing enthusiasts and other winter recreation-seekers. Avtor: B. KLADNIK In summer Slovenia is popular with lovers of water sports on rivers and lakes and in the sea. Slovenia has 10 golf courses set in a variety of different landscapes. There are also adrenaline parks, riding centres and horseriding trails, and paragliding and ballooning centres.

Avtor: B. BAJŽELJ A particular feature of Slovenia, and its strongest tourism trump card, are its thermal springs, around which 15 accredited spa health resorts have developed over the centuries and an even greater number of thermal wellness centres. Health and beauty programmes are based on pampering with many different natural resources and also include opportunities for active leisure. Wellness facilities are available throughout Slovenia it is not only the country s famous spas (some with a tradition dating back several centuries) that offer wellness breaks, they are also available at top-category hotels. Another good starting point for adventures in Slovenia are well-managed campsites attached to thermal spa centres and in other locations around Slovenia.
