21 David Fulton NSVFA Chaplain Summary of Activities Beginning at Conference last year, Marlene put together a committee that we named the CARE Committee. This stands for Compassion, Awareness, & Resources for the Emergency responder. We want our fellow firefighters to feel our Compassion for them, we want to be Aware of things going on in their lives, and to provide the Resources they need to help them through anything they are experiencing. There is no limit to the issues they may have, but some examples are scene stress, personal stress from any number of causes, substance abuse, and especially any suicidal thoughts. I think the thing that made us all sit up and take notice was the statistic that show that more firefighters are dying from suicide than from LODD deaths. That hits home. Currently, the committee consists of Marlene, myself as chair, Charles Roberts from Osceola, and Rex Adams from Lexington. We have been called upon to do one stress debriefing for a department this year following a very difficult medical call (an attempted suicide), and recently met with the Osceola department to share our commitment to them and make sure they know we are available if we re needed. We hope to meet with the Lexington and Madison departments to share the same things with them. We figure we ll follow the example in scripture, to go to Jerusalem (home towns) first and then take it to Judea (rest of the State). We all have connections with other firefighters around the state, so if our own departments know about us, word should spread to others and we will go wherever needed. The NSVFA has been kind and generous to provide some money in the upcoming budget to cover some of my expenses as Chaplain. The other members of the committee serve entirely out the generousness of their own hearts. Please thank them if you see them. Going forward, I would like to add two more members to the committee to give us better coverage in the state. I would like to add a member probably from the Imperial or Grant departments to help cover southwest Nebraska, and a member from somewhere in the panhandle. There would be no additional cost to the NSVFA to do so, but I think it would help the CARE Committee to be more readily available throughout the state. Thank you for your support of our efforts. I do think our work to CARE for the members of the NSVFA is important. Sincerely submitted, David C. Fulton NSVFA Chaplain
